Lisää ennätyslämpimän "talven" termisestä määrittämisestä - More about the thermal definition of the record warm "winter"

- 9. tammikuuta.

Sää on kylmenemässä talvisemmaksi täällä Etelä-Suomessa.

Kevätaika on konkreettisempi päivä päivältä ja tätä kylmää jaksoa pitäisi itse asiassa kutsua takatalveksi, koska terminen kevät on jo alkanut aikoja sitten.

The so called winter period ending today formed here in southern Finland the warmest of the measured weather history. In this way the winter 1924 - 25 fell finally to the second place in warmth. I looked through the surface pressure map history of that winter from Wetterzentrale pages and I noticed lots of similarities in the weather situations with this "winter". Then as well there was very active low pressure activity in the western side of Finland over Atlantic, which caused strong and long continuing westerly - southerly winds and frosty periods were just weak and short between them. However, the difference to this year's winter was then the fact, that a short time at the beginning of December and during the latter part of February there prevailed that kinds of cold weather conditions (for example colder readings than -20 C surely appeared according to those maps at least during few nights in inland areas), which haven't been measured a single time this "winter" in southernmost Finland. Therefore this "winter's" weather conditions have been really causing entirely never before seen circumstances in many ways.

One significant matter here is the definition of a thermal winter. From the information of the Helsinki, Puistola weather station (November, December, January and February) we can observe the fact, that using the five day rule, only the period 2nd to 9th of January has been worth to be defined as winter at the station in question. There wasn't nowhere near a same kind of frosty period in February, so therefore there wasn't thermal winter in February at all. In addition by the southwestern coast that January frosty period was so minor, that there wasn't thermal winter even then as well in many places. In this way there has been reached a new mark in the known history in defining seasons!

Already in January I pondered this absurd way of defining winter in these conditions and regarding the climate change. According to that and the mentioned above we can conclude, that in a large part of southern Finland spring started at the 10th of January and in the winterless parts of southwestern - southern coast at the 23rd of December after the winter solstice! Sounds unbelievable, doesn't it?

Let's ponder one alternative a bit more. In Sweden there is apparently in use a definition, where in winterless circumstances autumn can be prolonged in an agreed terms up to the 14th of February and after that spring would be starting straight from autumn. This would be sensible in that way, that springlike phenomenons of plants are coming out in winterless circumstances at the earliest around the turn of January - February. According to this spring started in a wide area in southern Finland at the 15th of February, but that definition is fitting in a bad way to the mild weather after the early January frost (in other words winter); there would be no kind of season at all or would there be autumn again...

So, we are facing the fact, what I already pondered in January. Spring can appear already in December or immediately for example after a winter being happened in January. In the future this kind of thing will become evermore frequent as the climate change proceeds. Next time that may happen perhaps already next year or then in a space of few years... However, there may be soon a need to change definitions. In that case of early January winter one would act in the following way; from the 10th day onwards one would be using a term pre-spring and the actual spring would start from those first pollen observations. In the case of winterless circumstances autumn will continue up to the winter solstice and after that it will be pre-spring into the same pollen situation as in the first case and then the actual spring will start.

For example in this way nature's phenological observations should be taken as one guide with others, in order to create a wholly functional scientific definition for seasons in the new era's climate facing us, which will cause in any case these kinds of never before seen situations and circumstances in the history of mankind. They will demand us to create new models replacing old ones, which this "winter" has pointed out astonishingly for the first time in the known history. As I have conluded, the thermal winter according to the old definition may vanish even completely from the southern Finland's circumstances in a surprisingly fast pace.

To the end information about the weather of the coming days, which may cause changes to the definition of the thermal winter (I will return to the matter). The weather is turning more wintry here in southern Finland. Already today there has been frost at night by the southern coast as well and it has been snowing a bit. During the weekend afternoon temperatures as well will remain under zero C especially in inland areas, but thanks to winds and clouds night temperatures will drop at the lowest in there as well only between -5 C and -10 C and only locally into the colder side of -10 C. So, this winter's frost records aren't hardly to be broken and unbelievably minor winter conditions will continue further in this sense as well, allthough this cold in early March is already a bit colder than usually.

The cold spell is caused by a low pressure moving to the southern side of Finland. It will bring precipitation as well and due to the cool down also the southern coast may get a some kind of snowcover for a short time (in inland areas there has been fallen new snow during this week in many places already for couple of centimetres). However, there are signs in sight of the case, that during the latter part of the next week the weather would warm up again and at this phase of the year that can be already easily fatal to winter in any case... The time of spring will be more concrete day by day and this cold period should be called in fact as a "after winter", because the thermal spring has already started long ago.

Historiallisia ennätyksiä kasautuu Flickr sää- ja luontoseurannassa - Historical records being piled up in the Flickr weather and nature follow-up

Täydennetty jakso on 18. päivästä eiliseen iltaan asti; (A B C).

Here are again February 2008 photos of the weather and nature follow-up on my Flickr pages. The added period is from the 18th day up to yesterday evening; (A B C). There prevailed further a very mild weather during the period not counted for few small frosts and occasional snowing. The period contained in a way features of both autumn (very unfrozen sea and strong low pressures with their rains) and spring (increased sun radiation during clear situations and the first growing and blooming situations of plants). Considering the whole "winter" due to this period the extreme speciality of the circumstances started to feel very strongly and terrifyingly. Today there has been coming more strengthening to it, because already for the third occasion in a short time there have been measured even +6 C - +7 C temperatures in southern Finland and there have been afternoon cumulus clouds in the sky typical for a warm season, like normally only from April onwards!

So, due to the record unfrozen sea there prevailed further a Novemberish warming effect of the sea and due to that inland areas were further more snowy than areas by the southern coast. Into the amount of snow in inland areas there had been formed a deviation in the direction of west-east; Hämeenlinna was occasionally allmost snowless, but at the same latitude in eastern Finland there was more than 20 centimetres of snow. This is a typical feature of a very mild winter, because continental climate is affecting yet in February as well in a cooling way in the east and the profuse precipitation usually coming in the mild conditions are over there more often snow than in the west. The continental feature of the east showed as well at the last sunday night as helped by the weather situation, as there was frost between -20 C and -33 C in eastern and northern Finland (the coldest night of the winter over there). At the same time there was only about -5 C of frost in southern and western Finland at the most and by the southwestern coast temperatures were even above zero C; there formed a historically peculiar temperature difference for a short time.

The width of the completely snowless area in southern Finland was allmost all the time record breaking considering the time of the year. Rivers streamed further mostly icefree and on lakes there were way thinner and more fragile ice layers than normally during this time; even under 20 centimetres (about 50 centimetres should be the average at this time). Waters in streaming places were record unfrozen in lakes as well and for example in Helsinki areas the thin ice layers formed onto the inlets of the sea at the end of the period have now melted allmost entirely in a record breaking way. It appears to be the case, that the records caused by the warmth have been forming to be average in a record breaking way. In any case we present humans at these parts of Finland are now witnessing completely new kinds of circumstances, as compared to the previous written history.

Kevään kiila syksyisen "talven" lähestyessä loppuaan - A wedge of spring as the autumnal "winter" is nearing its end

Tänään mitattiin Etelä-Suomessa helmikuun lämpimin päivä tähän mennessä. Lämpötilat nousivat laajasti yli +5 asteen, kuten arvioin aikaisemmin ennusteessani.

Today there was measured the warmest day of February so far in southern Finland. Temperatures rose widely over +5 C, as I estimated earlier in my forecast. The warmest (In finnish, but there is a readible chart in the link) place was Jomala in Ahvenanmaa island; +8,5 C. The all time record +11,8 C from 1943 remained yet in place. The situation was helped to form by Föhn wind.

Today showed clearly the special nature of the ongoing very mild month. In the morning it rained with a strong wind and it was like autumn. In the afternoon Föhn wind got the weather to clear up well and in the mentioned temperatures circumstances felt very springlike, as the strengthened sun radiation has already at this time otherwise as well springlike features.

During coming days the weather will continue very mild in southern Finland. A small colder moment will be coming at the night between saturday and sunday due to a ridge of high pressure, when there may be especially in inland areas more than -5 C of frost; at this time the cycle of afternoon and night temperatures is starting to show evermore in clear sky situations. After that we are further located in mild southerly - westerly wind areas of low pressures. Therefore there is further in the forecast mainly alternations of rainy autumn and sunny spring. There may be a possibility for high temperatures like today, if Föhn wind will blow suitably during a some afternoon. Winter might be visiting short periods of time with its snowing during the latter part of the next week, but not at all even then in a strong and permanent way...

I will return at the latest next week to ponder the prevailing very peculiar situation of defining seasons, which tells about the special features in that matter brought by the climate change furthermore strongly in the future.

Update at the 23rd of February at 12:30 PM: I travelled a moment ago again to Hämeenlinna from Tapiola, Espoo and I observed at the same time snow conditions. I must say, that the snow depth map of Finnish Meteorological Institute isn't clearly telling the truth in its typical way. There was practically snowless up to Hyvinkää (about in midway) not counted for few very insignificant patches on some forest edges nearer to Hyvinkää and it was snowless in forests as well far into inland areas. From Hyvinkää to Hämeenlinna fields were 50 - 95 % melted from snow, so even this far in inland it cannot be talked about a snowcover. Therefore in a large area in southern Finland there prevails even more snowless conditions than the amazing snowless conditions of February 1990; I remember that well. Normally there should be at this time on the whole mentioned area 20 - 40 centimetres of snow! In this way this mild weather is appearing in the snow condition in a very clear way.

Kielenkääntö viivästyy - The translation will be delayed

Pahoittelen asiaa.

Here is information about the translation and updating of this blog's old posts. Originally I was obligated to translate old posts into english this winter and restore some old posts at the same time, but these peculiar circumstances of the "winter" have been causing lots of interesting matters to write about and other hurries as well. Therefore I haven't had time to handle the translation matter. Spring is appearing to rush foward with its arboretum hurries in an extreme way ahead of schedule and I have other hurries as well this year. Therefore I will leave the translation for now and I will return to the matter perhaps only next year... I am sorry about the matter.

Kasvikuvia huhtikuussa 2007, osa 1 - Plant photos in April 2007, part 1

Olen taas julkaissut kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvia Flickr -sivuillani. Tällä kertaa on vuorossa huhtikuu 2007. Palaan perennakuviin jossain vaiheessa...

I have published again photos of my plant photography project on my Flickr pages. This time it's the turn of April 2007. I made a change to the publishing method; in the future I will publish the perennial photos included in the months later in a second phase and now I will concentrate at first only to trees, shrubs and climbers. Reasons for this are problems in making schedules, getting through the photos and naming them. I will return to the perennial photos at some point...

Japaninvaahteralajikkeita uuden ajan kasvienkäyttöä varten, osa 2 - Japanese Maple cultivars for the new era's plant use, part 2

Lajikkeet: 'Ibo juhi', 'Ichigyohji', 'Inaba shidare', 'Inazuma', 'Irish Lace', 'Jerre Schwartz', 'Johnnie's Pink', 'Kagiri nishiki', 'Kamagata', 'Kara ori', 'Karasu gawa', 'Kasagi yama', 'Katsura', 'Kawahara Rose', 'Kawahara no midori', 'Kinran', 'Kiyo hime', 'Koba shohjoh', 'Kochoh nishiki', 'Komachi hime', 'Koriba', 'Koto hime', 'Koto no ito', 'Kurabu yama', 'Kuro hime', 'Kurui jishi', 'Kuzu', 'Lemon Chiffon', 'Linearilobum', 'Lucky Star', 'Mallet', 'Manyoh no sato', 'Marakumo', 'Margaret Bee', 'Margaret', 'Marjan', 'Masu kagami', 'Masu murasaki', 'Matsu kubo', 'Matsukaze', 'Mioun', 'Mirte', 'Misty Moon', 'Mizu kuguri', 'Mizuho beni', 'Momoira kohya san', 'Mon Papa', 'Moonfire', 'Mugiwara nishiki', 'Murasaki iroha', 'Murasaki kiyo hime', 'Mure hibari', 'Muro gawa', 'Nathan', 'Nicholsonii', 'Nigrum', 'Nishiki gawa', 'Nomura nishiki', 'Nomura', 'Oh izu', 'Ohgon sarasa', 'Ohkagami', 'Ohsakazuki', 'Okushimo', 'Omato', 'Omure yama', 'Orange Dream', 'Orangeola', 'Oregon Sunset', 'Ori zuru', 'Oridono nishiki', 'Ornatum', 'Oshio beni', 'Otome zakura', 'Otto's Dissectum', 'Pam Trawick', 'Peaches and Cream', 'Peve Multicolor', 'Phoenix', 'Pink Filigree', 'Pung Kill', 'Purple Ghost', 'Purple Glory', 'Purpureum Angustilobum', 'Purpureum'.

Let's continue from here the introduction of Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) cultivars. Last time I was left to the letter H. So, it is the question of PlantenTuin Esveld nursery's visual plant introductions, from where I will pick up my own favourites in this series. The grounds for the pick ups are esthetic reasons and the reasons caused by the changes the warming up climate will bring. As awakened up by those reasons, the goals are enriching the cultivated vegetation here in Finland thanks to the new and never before seen possibilities and a need for getting ready for changes in general.

The cultivars: 'Ibo juhi', 'Ichigyohji', 'Inaba shidare', 'Inazuma', 'Irish Lace', 'Jerre Schwartz', 'Johnnie's Pink', 'Kagiri nishiki', 'Kamagata', 'Kara ori', 'Karasu gawa', 'Kasagi yama', 'Katsura', 'Kawahara Rose', 'Kawahara no midori', 'Kinran', 'Kiyo hime', 'Koba shohjoh', 'Kochoh nishiki', 'Komachi hime', 'Koriba', 'Koto hime', 'Koto no ito', 'Kurabu yama', 'Kuro hime', 'Kurui jishi', 'Kuzu', 'Lemon Chiffon', 'Linearilobum', 'Lucky Star', 'Mallet', 'Manyoh no sato', 'Marakumo', 'Margaret Bee', 'Margaret', 'Marjan', 'Masu kagami', 'Masu murasaki', 'Matsu kubo', 'Matsukaze', 'Mioun', 'Mirte', 'Misty Moon', 'Mizu kuguri', 'Mizuho beni', 'Momoira kohya san', 'Mon Papa', 'Moonfire', 'Mugiwara nishiki', 'Murasaki iroha', 'Murasaki kiyo hime', 'Mure hibari', 'Muro gawa', 'Nathan', 'Nicholsonii', 'Nigrum', 'Nishiki gawa', 'Nomura nishiki', 'Nomura', 'Oh izu', 'Ohgon sarasa', 'Ohkagami', 'Ohsakazuki', 'Okushimo', 'Omato', 'Omure yama', 'Orange Dream', 'Orangeola', 'Oregon Sunset', 'Ori zuru', 'Oridono nishiki', 'Ornatum', 'Oshio beni', 'Otome zakura', 'Otto's Dissectum', 'Pam Trawick', 'Peaches and Cream', 'Peve Multicolor', 'Phoenix', 'Pink Filigree', 'Pung Kill', 'Purple Ghost', 'Purple Glory', 'Purpureum Angustilobum', 'Purpureum'.

Jälleen hiipunut talven yritys "syys-keväässä" - The trying of winter being faded again in "autumn-spring"

Kyseessä on helmikuun 2008 jakso 9. päivästä eiliseen iltaan asti.

Now it is the turn for the weather and nature follow-up update on my Flickr pages. It is the question of the February 2008 period from the 9th day to the yesterday evening. Then there prevailed at first humid, cloudy and very mild weather in southern Finland. Even the snow in inland areas decreased significantly and a record snowless area was formed to the southern coast. During the last days winter tried to come again, but there didn't come snow hardly at all. However, the 16th day's night was the coldest of the "winter" so far (look below). Here are the links: (A B C).

Syntymäpäiväni ennätysleuto sääraportti - My birthday's record mild weather report

Viime yön pakkanen jäi vähän ennustettua heikommaksi. Tarkistin tilanteen Ilmatieteenlaitoksen sivuilta ja esim. Helsingissä oli alimmillaan n. -11 astetta ja Hämeenlinnassa n. -13 astetta.

The frost last night remained a bit weaker than forecasted. I checked out the situation from the pages of Finnish Meteorological Institute and for example in Helsinki temperature was at the lowest about -11 C and in Hämeenlinna about -13 C. The drop of temperature was prevented firstly by the wind continued long time and secondly by the cloud area of a warm front arrived early from the west. So, there remained large areas in the warmer side of -15 C in southern Finland. If these values will remain the severest frosts of the "winter", then they are really unbelievably insignificant as compared to the previous weather history; a big new record will be put down in here as well.

The weather will continue all next week so much mild, that there isn't a threat of severer frosts at all. Already tomorrow temperatures will be widely again above zero C in southern Finland. During the early part of the next week the mild weather will be interrupted a bit, as there will spread an air mass with northwesterly winds bringing weak frosts. However, it appears to be the case, that from wednesday onwards very strong westerly winds will be causing a very mild weather for a long time and spring will have a chance to proceed again.

That situation of the week's end may be creating possibilities for very strong Föhn wind conditions, when even well over +5 C afternoon temperatures may be possible (at this time of the year the sun has already a clear warming effect to afternoons). Strong low pressures will bring precipitation at the same time, but it appears to be the case, that most of it will come as rain; therefore snowless conditions may continue in a record breaking way and thin ice on water areas formed by these frosts will melt again as creating record unfrozen areas.

Now it is time to finish this writing and to get ready for spending my Birthday and the Blogimiitti (party typed meeting of mainly Helsinki area bloggers) this evening!

Pakkasen vaikutuksia kasveihin lumettomissa olosuhteissa - Influences of frost to the plants in snowless circumstances

Varjostus on siten tarpeen niille pakkasjakson aikana.

Siinä on kuitenkin ongelmia. Muutoin kasvien kasvu häiriintyy mm. tukehtumisen vaaran takia.

Let's ponder now a little influences of that coming frost to plants. It appears to be further the case, that there will be frost between -10 C and -15 C and in inland areas more as well during the night between friday and saturday. That kind of frost has already caused worries in the snowless areas, because the frost will have a chance to affect plants without the snow's shelter. Southern Finland will remain very snowless through the frost. The problem is being the first growing happenings on some species, but the species not to have started growing will be further safe despite their dormancy stages being loosen in different ways. The soil getting freezed doesn't have time to become a significant harm in couple of days not counted for some single plants with tender sprouts (herbacious new growths).

Amongst others spring signs have been displayed on many bulbous plants with their new sprouts. There have been even local blooming, but it has been mainly a question of Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) only. Also some perennials have small new growth beginnings (though, yet only in bud phases) on the ground; Goat's Beard (Aruncus dioicus) and many Peonies (Paeonia sp.). Alders (Alnus sp.) and Hazel (Corylus avellana) from trees have started their blooming. Buds have been clearly swollen for example in the cases of Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) and many Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.), from which some have pushed even a bit of green from their buds.

The most sensitive one from the mentioned is Hazel (the shrub is otherwise completely safe), which awakened male catkins are clearly under a threat of being damaged by the frost in -15 C conditions. Otherwise the damages caused by that kind of frost to new growth will be mainly marginal and a new growth will replace later easily the damaged parts, because for example in the cases of perennials important growing parts and the growing points are yet sheltered by the bud / rosette of leaves. Mainly just the outer parts of the new growth might be damaged. The bulbous plants grown far may be damaged worse, if they are in a sunny place; in this time of the year the sunshine may already dry up effectively and worsen the frost damages. For those a shading is therefore needed during the frosty period. Otherwise many bulbous plants can tolerate naturally frost well (Crocuses are among the most sensitive). Frost and scorch are harmfull to evergreen perennials as well, like in the case of Japanese Pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis).

What is the advice in sheltering plants in these snowless conditions? Creating a shelter on the top of plants with a frost blanket or conifer twigs in the cases of perennials and bulbous plants is mainly just a psychological one (except in that shading), because for example -15 C of frost will penetrate through them quite easily. Much more effective would be a method, where there would be piled compost - mulch on the top of the plants at least about 10 centimetres. However, there are problems in that. Firstly it is laboured especially in the cases of big mass plantings; there are no resources enough. Secondly tender sprouts may get broken under the weight. The third problem is freezing; the piled material should be dry as dust, in order it doesn't get freezed hard. Namely this piling must be removed immediately after the frosts or before a heavy snowfall (snow is much better shelter). Otherwise the growth of the plants will be harmed for example due to the threat of suffocation. With small plantings one can of course think about other means of sheltering as well; mineral wool, sackcloth and other such materials placed thickly (not on the top of tender sprouts at least not directly).

So, according to me there won't be a reason for great worries. Such early stages of growth situations have been many times before in the hands of even similar frosts without a big catastrophe, when appeared in a normal time in April. Plants are generally surprisingly hardy, like the last spring pointed out (the nightfrosts between -5 C and -10 C after the March warmth during the growth being proceeded much farther). Deaths will appear only in very single cases, whether it is not a case of a really winter sensitive species.

To the end a mention; the seeds I ordered recently arrived this week. Yesterday there arrived a packet from Arboretum Mustila and three days ago from Exotic Garden. I checked out the substances of the packets and only White Fir (Abies concolor), Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana), Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), Mountain Hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) and Bigleaf Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum magnificum) remained missing due to their shortage. I will place again photos here of the seeds later, as I have decided about their future...

Ennätyssula taimistotyö ja tietoja viikonlopun pakkasesta - The record unfrozen nursery task and information about the frost at the weekend

Mantsurianjalopähkinä - Manchurian Walnut (Juglans mandschurica)

Japaninjalopähkinä - Japanese Walnut (Juglans ailanthifolia)

Sirotuomipihlaja - Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis)

Valkomulperi - White Mulberry (Morus alba)

Tänään kävin juuri ennen pimeän tuloa tekemässä taimistotöitä... HELMIKUUSSA!! Viime päivien erittäin leuto sää on odotetusti sulattanut taimikasvatuspaikallanikin maan kokonaan moneksi päiväksi.

Tähän loppuun uutta tarkempaa tietoa to - la kylmästä jaksosta.

Today I went to do nursery tasks just before the nightfall... In FEBRUARY!! The very mild weather during recent days has melted also at my nursery place the soil completely for many days as expected. The soil was typically very wet and many herbaceous weeds were green and growing, like in the lowest photo on that one container. This kind of unfrozen soil of February is extremely special (at least according to the previous climate) and the most astonishing matter of all time is the fact, that nursery tasks of unfrozen soil have been possible to do now during all "winter months" in the row; December, January and February. Unbelievable! One wasn't able to fantazise this to be possible two years ago. What will be next?!

About the tasks themselves; I continued the unfinished tasks of loosening the containers rooted into the ground for them to be handled further. I took example photos from the plants at the same time and they are above. European Smoketree (Cotinus coggygria) and Regel's Threewingnut (Tripterygium regelii) are missing from the photos, because due to the dusk those photos didn't become successfull. Those and White Mulberry I will be changing into bigger containers and all the others I will be planting onto the arboretum area later in spring. There were about 50 pieces of the loosen containers. Allegheny Serviceberry appeared to have grown its buds a bit, but otherwise this "pre-spring" hasn't been affecting yet in a visible way to my nursery's species.

Here to the end new and more precise information about the cold period during thursday - saturday. It will be possible, that the severest frosts of this "winter" will be reached at the night between friday and saturday in southern Finland. That would be made possible by a calm and clear ridge of high pressure following the northerly wind; if that will be hitting precisely at the night - morning before the mild westerly wind, then there might be a bit colder than -15 C for a short time in southern Finland's inland areas and for example in Helsinki by the coast colder than -10 C. However, these values as well are really insignificant as compared to the fact, how during every previous winter in the era of weather measurements also the mildest winters have included at least couple of short periods of about -20 C frosts in many places around southern Finland; there is a surface pressure map history beginning from the 19th century in Wetterzentrale pages, from which one can conclude the matter.

Helmikuun 2008 sää- ja luontoseurantaa sekä yhä lauha ennuste - A February 2008 weather and nature follow-up and further a mild forecast

Helmikuun 2008 sää- ja luontoseurannan kuvasarjat alkavat Flickr -sivuillani. Ensimmäinen jakso on kuun alusta 8. päivän iltaan asti.

Jatkon säästä lyhyesti; tähän mennessä +5 astetta on täpärästi jäänyt rikkomatta (n.

The February 2008 photo sets of the weather and nature follow-up are starting on my Flickr pages. The first period is from the start of the month to the 8th day's evening. Then winter tried to come with a very poor success and only occasional snowcovers appeared among the wet circumstances. However, there formed a big difference to the amount of snow between the southern coast and inland areas due to the novemberish warming effect of the unfrozen sea. A significant storm was at the 3rd day's night and morning and the whole storm low pressure was proceeded again by a strong sunrise colours at the first day. Here are the links; A B C.

About the future weather shortly; up to here +5 C hasn't been topped (about +4 C, though) narrowly in southern Finland, but that might be topped early next week in Lapland due to a strong Föhn wind affecting over there at that time. In southern Finland a calm and also foggy weather will continue at first and temperatures might drop a bit closer to zero C before a milder westerly wind at tuesday - wednesday. A strong northerly wind will bring a temporary frost for thursday - saturday (it may be, that -10 C or stronger frost will remain unreached furthermore). The trying of winter remains astonishingly even this time really poor, because immediately at sunday as a high pressure has been moved from Greenland to the southwestern - southern side of Finland a westerly wind with a help of Föhn phenomenon will cause temperatures to rise perhaps surprisingly fast several degrees above zero C. From there onwards there would seem to be continuing again for a long time mild weather, which can be considered at this phase already spring...

Update 11th of February 2008 at 1:30 PM: I add a snowcover situation report here. Snow has melted significantly over the past couple of days and a rare snowless area considering the time of the year covers southern and southwestern coasts and widely also nearby inland areas. Once more on the snow condition map (Note, this doesn't become archived) of Finnish Meteorological Institute this doesn't materialize in the right way. Last spring I pondered reasons for this in my critical analysis.

Now the situation is the same, as the snowcover fallen in inland areas is uneven in a typical way of spring despite its age of only couple of weeks (strong winds during the snowfalls made the surface uneven); that dark blue area (10 - 25 cm) on that map of Finnish Meteorological Institute contains really 25 - 50% worth of melted patches of the whole surface especially near the light blue area and the light blue area (1 - 10 cm) is in practice so melted, that most of the ground is free from snow and widely only single small snow patches are to be seen. Especially open areas are very snowless. All this is revealed well as observing many weather cameras of the area.

In the future the snow will melt yet a bit before the frost of thursday - saturday. It doesn't snow during the frosty period not counted for very minor snowshowers and the weather getting milder at sa - su doesn't bring big amounts of snow. So, the snowless area will be suffering from snowless conditions further as well from here long way into the next week. We aren't perhaps yet not quite in the most snowless February situation of all time, but we are approximately side by side with the snow condition of February 1990 and that is very significant. During the next week snowless conditions might be really the most significant of all time as the snow melt proceeds, when normally we would be just approaching the snowcover maximum being reached during early March...

Japaninvaahteralajikkeita uuden ajan kasvienkäyttöä varten, osa 1 - Japanese Maple cultivars for the new era's plant use, part 1

Nyt on toisen internet-kasviesittelyn vuoro. Viimeksi esittelin laajan valikoiman havukasvilajikkeita. Japaninvaahtera on maailman monimuotoisin laji lajikkeidensa ansiosta.

Lajikkeet: 'Aka shidare', 'Aka shigatatsu sawa', 'Aka shime no uchi', 'Akane', 'Akegarasu', 'Aki tsuma gaki', 'Alloys', 'Alpenweiss', 'Ao meshime no uchi shidare', 'Ao shidare', 'Aratama', 'Ariadne', 'Ariake nomura', 'Asuka', 'Atrolineare', 'Atropurpureum Wattez', 'Atropurpureum', 'Attraction', 'Aureum', 'Azuma murasaki', 'Baldsmith', 'Barrie Bergman', 'Beni fushigi', 'Beni gasa', 'Beni hoshi', 'Beni komachi', 'Beni maiko', 'Beni ohtake', 'Beni shichi henge', 'Beni shidare', 'Beni shigitatsu sawa', 'Beni tsukasa', 'Beni ubi gohon', 'Beni zuru', 'Berrima Bridge', 'Bloodgood', 'Bonnie Bergman', 'Brandt's Dwarf', 'Burgundy Lace', 'Callico', 'Chantilly Lace', 'Chi otome', 'Chikumano', 'Chishio', 'Chishio Improved', 'Chishio hime', 'Chitose yama', 'Chokei ji', 'Chuzen ji', 'Coral Pink', 'Corallinum', 'Crimson Queen', 'De shohjoh', 'Demi-Sec', 'Dissectum Flavescens', 'Dissectum Nigrum', 'Dissectum Rubrum', 'Dissectum', 'Dragon's Fire', 'Eddisbury', 'Elegans', 'Ellen', 'Emerald Lace', 'Felice', 'Filigree', 'Fior d'Arancio', 'Firecracker', 'First Ghost', 'Flushing', 'Fjellheim', 'Fujinami nishiki', 'Garnet', 'Gasshoh', 'Genshu yama', 'Golden Pond', 'Green Lace', 'Green Mist', 'Green Star', 'Greenthumb North-Carolina Red', 'Hanami nishiki', 'Harusama' (Syohwa Period), 'Heiwa', 'Helena', 'Heptalobum Rubrum', 'Hessei', 'Higasa yama', 'Hinode nishiki', 'Hiyuhga yama', 'Hohgyoku', 'Hupp's Red Willow'.

Now is the turn for the second internet plant introduction. Last time I introduced a wide selection of conifer cultivars. For example Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) cultivars can be fitted excellently together with them into same groups. Japanese Maple is the most varied species in the world thanks to its cultivars. The selection is super large and the cultivars vary from small shrubs to large trees. Now I introduce the first favourites of mine out of them. I will divide this cultivar introduction into three sections due to an abundant amount of the cultivars.

All these links are photos of the dutch nursery PlantenTuin Esveld. These pages are the best in the whole world in plant introduction, which I have discovered from the internet. Therefore I will be taking advantage of them busily from now on, as I will bring out my plant favourites to you. I have selected these introductions also due to the fact, that the climate change will bring a possibility and a need for taking in use new plant species and cultivars to the side of old ones here in Finland. So, I remind you again, that we must take extensive measures already now to try and cultivate these kinds of plants for public green areas and for sale to private gardens. These introductions of mine are important proposals of esthetically most interesting species and cultivars, which have according to me a value of use in all kinds of green area planning and design and in park and garden culture. An unprejudiced attitude is here an important virtue.

So, here is the first selection of Japanese Maple cultivars. Many of these as well are suitable for also small gardens. According to the previous climate, Japanese Maple with its cultivars would be rather winter sensitive also by the southern coast, but already in a very near future thriving may be good in large areas of the inland as well. This "winter" is acting as a fine example of that and according to it in the basis of frosts up to here these cultivars would have been thriving perfectly well even as far as in Jyväskylä (Over there the most severe frost so far has been about -15 C according to my follow-up)! Jyväskylä is found in central Finland.

The cultivars: 'Aka shidare', 'Aka shigatatsu sawa', 'Aka shime no uchi', 'Akane', 'Akegarasu', 'Aki tsuma gaki', 'Alloys', 'Alpenweiss', 'Ao meshime no uchi shidare', 'Ao shidare', 'Aratama', 'Ariadne', 'Ariake nomura', 'Asuka', 'Atrolineare', 'Atropurpureum Wattez', 'Atropurpureum', 'Attraction', 'Aureum', 'Azuma murasaki', 'Baldsmith', 'Barrie Bergman', 'Beni fushigi', 'Beni gasa', 'Beni hoshi', 'Beni komachi', 'Beni maiko', 'Beni ohtake', 'Beni shichi henge', 'Beni shidare', 'Beni shigitatsu sawa', 'Beni tsukasa', 'Beni ubi gohon', 'Beni zuru', 'Berrima Bridge', 'Bloodgood', 'Bonnie Bergman', 'Brandt's Dwarf', 'Burgundy Lace', 'Callico', 'Chantilly Lace', 'Chi otome', 'Chikumano', 'Chishio', 'Chishio Improved', 'Chishio hime', 'Chitose yama', 'Chokei ji', 'Chuzen ji', 'Coral Pink', 'Corallinum', 'Crimson Queen', 'De shohjoh', 'Demi-Sec', 'Dissectum Flavescens', 'Dissectum Nigrum', 'Dissectum Rubrum', 'Dissectum', 'Dragon's Fire', 'Eddisbury', 'Elegans', 'Ellen', 'Emerald Lace', 'Felice', 'Filigree', 'Fior d'Arancio', 'Firecracker', 'First Ghost', 'Flushing', 'Fjellheim', 'Fujinami nishiki', 'Garnet', 'Gasshoh', 'Genshu yama', 'Golden Pond', 'Green Lace', 'Green Mist', 'Green Star', 'Greenthumb North-Carolina Red', 'Hanami nishiki', 'Harusama' (Syohwa Period), 'Heiwa', 'Helena', 'Heptalobum Rubrum', 'Hessei', 'Higasa yama', 'Hinode nishiki', 'Hiyuhga yama', 'Hohgyoku', 'Hupp's Red Willow'.

Ennätysaikaista leppien ja pähkinäpensaan kukintaa! - A record early blooming of Alders and Hazel!

Palaan asiaan...

Now it has happened, then! A record early start of native Alder (Alnus sp.) blooming in southern Finland. Helsingin Sanomat paper writes about this (this news is found only in finnish) and it is well seen in the newest pollen report (Note, this doesn't become archived - Note, the english text isn't updated yet as compared to the finnish text). I remember myself a February blooming of native Alders earlier only in February 1990, when it was also very mild. Now the situation is, that the whole "winter" has been very mild in practice. Then in the winter 1989 - 90 during November - December there was severe frost and a lot of snow for a short time. Last year cold February prevented yet the blooming of Alders at that time despite otherwise very mild circumstances, but then their blooming proceeded fast in the latter part of March thanks to the record warmth.

As I suspected, the first growing situations have now started to go, but according to the thermal definition (at least 5 days of over +5 C daily mean temperatures), the growing season won't be starting yet. Required above +5 C temperatures aren't reached yet, despite the very mild weather (temperatures occasionally even around +5 C at least by the southern - southwestern coast during coming days). Though, the earliest growing situations of all have a tendency to start developing slowly before that, if there have been several enough days of couple of degrees over zero C daily mean temperatures, the length of the day has clearly started to become longer (dormancy stages of plants have been overruled) and the soil have been mostly unfrozen. Here at January - February all this has been realized well. The matter has been helped also by the fact, that temperatures have been very same (above zero C) all day round thanks to the cloudy weather.

This peculiar situation is tempting me to start this year's plant photography project already during this weekend. So, there is already on offer in addition to Grey Alder (Alnus incana) a start of Hazel (Corylus avellana) blooming and early bulbous plants have been coming out of the ground, which is starting to be completely unfrozen again here by the southern coast. Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa) blooms a bit later, but it as well will be forming blooming during this month according to the coming weather. These kinds of growing situations at this time of the year should be perpetuated as signs of climate change's influences becoming more common. I will return to the matter...
