Kanadannuppupuu - Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

Edessä kanadannuppupuita (Cercis canadensis) ja takana siipiköynnöstä (Tripterygium regelii) - In the front Eastern Redbuds (Cercis canadensis) and in the back Regel's Threewingnut (Tripterygium regelii).


Yllä oleva kuvasarja esittää jälleen taimistossani tapahtuneita töitä. Alimmassa kuvassa nähdään viime viikolla purkittamani kanadannuppupuut ja ylemmissä tällä viikolla uusiin isompiin purkkeihin laittamani taimet; hopeapoppeli ja vuorivaahtera. Työpäivä oli torstai 26.7. ja samalla tein myös normaaleja kitkemis- ja kastelutöitä. Sadetta oli kertynyt edellisen viikon käynnin jälkeen vain 5 mm, joten kastelulle oli taas selvää tarvetta. Vielä ainakin ensi viikon keskityn pelkästään taimistotöihin (kasvien vaihtoa isompiin purkkeihin) ja sitten alkaa istutustyöt arboretumiin.

Kasvien kasvatuksen suhteen säät ovat olleet melko suosiolliset Etelä-Suomessa, mutta etelärannikolla kuurosateet ovat olleet melko vähäisiä sisämaahan verrattuna. Se on kuitenkin hyvin tyypillistä. Lämpötilojenkin suhteen olosuhteet ovat jatkuneet edelleen hyvin normaaleina ja siten Suomi on ollut näkymättömänä sivustaseuraajana Euroopan erikoisissa säissä; Britannian tulvat ja kaakkoisen Euroopan helteet. Päivisin on ollut n. +20 astetta (lämpimimmillään n. +25 astetta). Sen verran lämpimiä ilmamassat ovat olleet, että yhtenä yönä oli alimmillaan jopa yli +15 astetta. Siihen vaikuttivat tosin myös pilviset ja tuuliset säät.

Alkavan viikon alussa sää jatkuu päivälämpötilojen osalta vähän tavanomaista viileämpänä, joten +20 astetta ei ehkä ylity. Yöt ovat tuulten ja pilvien takia edelleen melko lämpimiä; +10 - +15 astetta. Alkuviikon merkittävin tapahtuma on tiistaiksi etelästä saapuva voimakas matalapaine. Sen yhteydessä esiintyy voimakkaita tuulia ja runsaita sateita; mahdollisesti voisi olla tiedossa jopa paikallisia tulvia ja tuulituhoja. Alkavan viikon lopuksi esim. weatheronline -palvelun sääkartat kertovat tänään iltapäivällä ehkä jopa sitä pitkään odotettua kunnollista hellettä. Vaikuttaa siltä, että tuo hellemassa olisi kuitenkin kosteaa ja matalapaineita liikkuisi lähellä. Se tietäisi ukkosbongareille kesän parasta jaksoa tähän mennessä Etelä-Suomessa. Odotan joka tapauksessa innolla tulevaa viikkoa, koska olen joutunut odottamaan kunnon ukkosta toukokuun lopusta lähtien. Onneksi tiistain matalapaine on erittäin mielenkiintoinen tuhovoimastaan huolimatta (tai juuri sen takia).

Kasvien suhteen tuleva viikko näyttäisi siis myös olevan täydellinen, koska runsaan sateen jälkeen tuleva helleaalto olisi paras mahdollinen sattuma. Kasvukauden vaihe on tällä hetkellä edennyt siihen, että esim. maitohorsman (Epilobium angustifolium) kukintovanoissa on enää latvaosat kukassa, mutta valkovillaisen siemenen lento on alkamassa vasta paikoin lämpimimimillä kasvupaikoilla. Kotipihlajan (Sorbus aucuparia) marjat ovat puolikypsiä ja kotipuutarhoissa omenien varhaisinta satoa tekevien lajikkeiden hedelmät alkavat olemaan lähes kypsiä. Kasvukausi on edelleen n. viikon edellä tavanomaisesta aikataulusta.

Jos joku ihmettelee arboretum-projektini hidasta etenemistä, niin kerron vielä lopuksi, että samaan aikaan olen edelleen jatkanut myös kasvien valokuvaamista. Joka viikko tämä on sisältänyt 1 - 3 valokuvausreissua eli saman verran päiviä (töiden jälkeen). Samalla olen ladannut Flickr -sivuilleni tätä valokuvasatoa, mutta edelleen pidän ne kuvat julkaisematta. Tällä hetkellä suunnittelen niiden kuvien julkaisun aloittamista tämän kasvukauden jälkeen...



The photo series above illustrates again works done at my nursery. In the lowest photo we see the Eastern Redbuds put in the new containers last week and in the upper photos the plants put into bigger new containers this week; White Poplar and Sycamore Maple. The working day was thursday the 26th of July and i did at the same time normal weeding and watering tasks as well. There had accumulated rain only 5 millimetres since the previous visit last week, so there was a clear need for watering again. I will concentrate only to the nursery tasks (putting plants into new bigger containers) at least for the next week and after that planting tasks at the arboretum will start.

Considering the growing of plants the weather has been rather favourable in southern Finland, but by the southern coast showers have been rather minor as compared to the inland areas. However, that is very typical. Considering temperatures as well the conditions have been continuing further very normal and therefore Finland has been an invisible bystader in the exceptional weather conditions in Europe; the floods in Britain and heatwave in southeastern Europe. During afternoons there have been around +20 C (at the highest about +25 C). Air masses have been so much warm, that minimum temperatures were even more than +15 C at the lowest during a one night. Windy and cloudy weather as well affected in that, though.

During the early part of the starting week the weather will continue a bit cooler than the average regarding afternoon temperatures and therefore +20 C won't propably be topped. The nights will be further rather warm due to winds and clouds; between +10 C and +15 C. The most significant feature at the beginning of the next week will be a strong low pressure arriving from the south until tuesday. Along with that there will be strong winds and heavy rain; possibly there might be even local flooding and wind damages in the forecast. For the end of the coming week for example weather maps of the weatheronline service are forecasting at today's afternoon possibly even that long awaited proper heatwave. It would seem though, that the hot air mass would be humid and there would be low pressures moving near. That would mean the best thunder period so far in southern Finland for the stormchasers. I'll wait in any case with exitement for the coming week, because i have had to wait proper thunderstorms since the end of May. Luckily at least the tuesday's low pressure will be very interesting despite (or just because) its damaging forces.

Considering plants the coming week would seem to be perfect as well, because a heatwave coming after profuse amount of rain would be the best possible thing to happen. At this moment the phase of the growing season have been proceeding into a phase, where for example flower heads of Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) have blooming flowers only at the top, but the flying of the white cottony seed is starting only at the warmest localitys. The berries of Rowan / European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) are half ripen and at home gardens Apple cultivars producing the earliest crops are almost ripened their fruit. The growing season is further about one week ahead of the average schedule.

If someone wonders about the slow proceeding of my arboretum project, so i tell here at the end, that at the same time i have been further continuing to photograph plants as well. That has included 1 to 3 photographing trips every week and in other words the same amount of days (after work). At the same time i have been uploading this crop of photos to my Flickr pages, but i will further keep those photos unpublished. At this moment i am considering to start publishing those photos after this growing season...

Normaalia viljelykesää kovilla tuulilla - A normal cultivation summer with strong winds

Ensin tiedoksi; Olen tänään päivittänyt blogitrilogian blogeja, mutta aikaisemmista aikeistani poiketen jatkan syyskuun 2006 päivittämistä vasta alkavalla viikolla ja julkaisen uusia merkintöjä silloin.

Tällä viikolla tein arboretum-projektiini liittyen sen verran, että torstaina 19.7. laitoin taimistollani kanadannuppupuut (Cercis canadensis) omiin purkkeihinsa taimilaatikosta. Kyseessä ovat ne keväällä sisällä esikasvatusta saaneet uudet taimet ja niitä on yllättävän paljon; n. 30 kpl. Kuvia niistä seuraa myöhemmin.

Säät ovat olleet vaihtelevia tällä viikolla Etelä-Suomessa. Aluksi oli melko lämmintä, mutta keskiviikkona ja torstaina matalapaine viilensi säätä hyvin voimakkaiden länsituulten kera. Nämä tuulet aiheuttivat mm. kuvassa nähtävän vahingon hopeasalavalle (Salix alba "Sibirica") Espoon Tapiolassa. Viileimmillään lämpötilat olivat päivisin vähän alle +20 astetta, mutta nyt viikonloppuna tavanomaisesti vähän yli +20 astetta melko aurinkoisessa säässä. Viileän jakson yhteydessä Etelä-Suomessa etenkin sisämaassa oli paikoin rankkoja kuuroja ja siinä yhteydessä Valkealassa oli tuhoisa ukkospuuska. Etelärannikolla sateet jäivät vähäisiksi.

Alkavalla viikolla sää jatkuu epävakaisena ja kunnon helleaaltoa ei ole edelleenkään näkyvissä. Niinpä kunnon ukkosetkin ovat yhä vain haaveissani. Kasvien viljelyn kannalta kosteusolosuhteet jatkuvat kohtuullisina - hyvinä, mutta lämpöä saisi olla enemmän. Tässä vaiheessa kasvukausi on kuitenkin vielä ainakin n. viikon edellä tavanomaisesta aikataulusta. Se näkyy mm. kokonaan kypsyneinä terttuseljan (Sambucus racemosa) ja tuomen (Prunus padus) marjoina.



At first a note; today i have been updating the blog trilogy blogs, but as opposed to my previous intentions i will continue updating September 2006 only during the starting week and and i will publish new posts then.

This week i have done things associating my arboretum project so much, that on thursday the 19th of July i put Eastern Redbuds (Cercis canadensis) into their own containers from the plant box at my nursery. They are the new plants, which got pre growing indoors during spring and there are surprisingly plenty of them; about 30 pieces. There will be pictures of them later.

The weather has been variable during this week in southern Finland. At first it was rather warm, but during wednesday and thursday a low pressure made the weather cool with very strong westerly winds. These winds caused the damage to Silver Willow (Salix alba "Sibirica") in the picture in the district of Tapiola in Espoo. At the coolest the afternoon temperatures were a bit under +20 C, but now at the weekend typically a bit over +20 C in a rather sunny weather. Along the cool weather period there were locally heavy showers especially in inland areas of southern Finland and at that time there was a damaging thunder gust in Valkeala (no english link; but a lot of trees were fallen down in an area of about 1 kilometer long and 300 meters wide). By the southern coast precipitation remained small.

During the starting week the weather will continue unstable and there isn't proper heatwave in the forecast further more. So proper thunderstorms as well will further be only in my dreams. Considering plants the humidity conditions will continue moderate - good, but there should have be more warmth. However at this stage the growing season is yet at least about one week ahead of the average schedule. That is showing for example as fully ripened berries of Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) and Bird Cherry (Prunus padus).

Tässä on kuvasarja viime maanantain käynniltä taimistollani. Ylimmissä kolmessa kuvassa nähdään tuolloin purkkeihin laittamiani taimia. Kyseessä ovat ne talvenarat lajit, jotka saivat runsaasti esikasvatusta (siemenistä) viime keväänä kotonani sisällä. Nyt ne olivat tottuneet hyvin ulkoilmaan ja niiden kasvu pääsee etenemään normaalisti. Kanadannuppupuut (Cercis canadensis) jätin vielä taimilaatikkoon. Neljänneksi ylimmässä kuvassa nähdään osa niistä Kentuckynkahvipuun taimista, jotka unohdin valokuvata edellistä taimistomerkintää varten. Sen ja kolmiokan kohdalla laitoin nyt purkkeihin myös vanhempia talven yli taimistossa säilyneitä yksilöitä.

Muissa kuvissa on esimerkkejä taimistoni parhaiten menestyvistä lajeista ja yksilöistä. Huomionarvoisimmat ovat talvenarat tuoksusumakki ja eteläntrumpettipuu, jotka iloiseksi yllätyksekseni lähtivät kasvamaan talven jälkeen. Tuota trumpettipuuta on tosin vain yksi kappale. Muidenkin kuvien joukossa on joitakin kohtalaisesti talvenarkoja lajeja, mutta ne ovat paljon varmempia kuin nuo mainitut kaksi lajia. Huomatkaa hedelmien kehitysasteet muutamien lajien kohdalla; kasvukausi oli kuvien ottamisen aikana edelleen reilun viikon edellä tavanomaista aikataulua. Lisää kuvia taimiston muistakin lajeista laitan taas elokuussa.

Ainoat selvät haitat taimistossa ovat olleet viime viikkoina muurahaiset ja etanat. Muurahaiset tekevät pesiään purkkeihin ja etanat tuhoavat uutta vihreää kasvua. Onneksi kumpikin ongelma on ollut aika vähäistä, joten niiden torjumiseen en ole ajatellut ryhtyä. Purkkeja tosin on tarkkailtava säännöllisesti...

Sää on suosinut edelleen kasvien kasvattamista Etelä-Suomessa, sillä lämmintä on ollut ja sadetta on saatu runsaahkosti. Tyhjensin taimiston sademittarin edellisenä torstaina ja ko. maanantaihin 9.7. mennessä siihen oli satanut 33 mm. Kasvatusolosuhteet pysyvät jatkossakin hyvinä (lukuun ottamatta lisääntynyttä homeongelmaa joillakin viljelmillä), koska kuurottaisia sateita saadaan. Lämpötilat ovat olleet tavanomaisia päivisin (+20 asteen molemmin puolin pilvisyyden ja sateiden mukaan), mutta runsaan kosteuden ja pilvien takia yölämpötilat ovat olleet alimmillaan joinakin öinä jopa vähän yli +15 astetta. Tuulet ovat olleet ajoittain hyvin heikkoja - tyyniä, joten ilman lämpimyys on korostunut sen takia etenkin sisämaassa. Meren rannikoilla on päivisin vaikuttanut edelleen vähän viilentävä merituuli.



Here is a photo series of the visit to my nursery last monday. In the upmost three pictures we see plants which i placed then into new containers. They are the not so hardy plants, which received a lot of pregrowing (from seeds) indoors at my home last spring. Now they were used to well into the outdoors air and their growing will continue normally. I left Eastern Redbuds (Cercis canadensis) yet in the plant box. In the fourth upmost photo we see part of those Kentucky Coffeetrees, which i forgot to photograph for the previous nursery post. In the cases of that and Honey Locust i placed now into containers also older pieces, which were overwintered at the nursery.

In the other pictures there are examples of those species and plant pieces of my nursery, which are thriving the best. The most notable are not so hardy Fragrant Sumac and Southern Catalpa, which started to grow after the winter to my glad surprise. However there is only one piece of that Catalpa. There are moderately not so hardy species also among the other photos, but they are much more winter proof plants as compared to those mentioned two species. Note the growing / ripening stages of the fruits in the cases of some species; the growing season was further a good week ahead of the average schedule at the moment of the photoshoot. I will put more photos of the other species as well of the nursery during August.

The only clear harmfull things during last weeks at the nursery have been ants and snails / slugs. The ants make their nests into containers and the snails /slugs are destroying new green growth. Fortunately both problems have been rather minor, so therefore i'm not considering prevention of them. However one must check containers regularly...

The weather has been favourable to growing plants in southern Finland, beause it has been warm and the precipitation has been rather profuse. I emptied the rain gauge / hydrometer at the nursery on the previous thursday and until the monday in question there was 33 millimetres of rain poured into it. The cultivating conditions will remain good (not counted for an increased mould problem at some cultivations), because there will be showery rain in the forecast. Temperatures have been average during afternoons (around +20 C according to cloudyness and precipitation), but due to the plentyfull humidity and clouds the night temperatures have been even a little more than +15 C at the lowest during some nights. Winds have been occasionally very weak - calm, so the warmth of the air has been emphasized due to that especially in inland areas. By the coasts of the sea there have been prevailing further a little bit cooling sea breeze during afternoons.

Eilen ennen Juhannuksen viettoon siirtymistä vein taimikasvatuspaikalleni ulos sisällä kodissani esikasvatuksessa olleet taimet. Ne olivat sisällä huhtikuun kylvöstä asti, joten ne ovat saaneet kasvussaan runsaan etumatkan Etelä-Suomen luonnon tilanteeseen nähden. Se on hyvä näille talvenaroille lajeille, jotta ne valmistautuisivat ensi talveen kunnolla. Yllä olevissa kuvissa näette ko. lajien eilisen tilanteen ennen siirtoa. Olisin voinut siirtää lajit ulos jo kolme viikkoa sitten hallanvaaran kaikottua, mutta käy tämä näinkin. Nyt kasvit saavat tottua varjoisassa kohdassa ulkoilmaan ja noin kahden - kolmen viikon kuluttua ne voidaan istuttaa omiin purkkeihinsa. Noin isoksi päässeet taimet ovat vähän hankala erottaa toisistaan, mutta siihenkin on keinot... Tuossa laatikossa olevat taimet saavat olla seuraavaan vuoteen asti paikoillaan. Monesti aikaisemminkin olen havainnut sen hyväksi tavaksi siirtää taimien omiin purkkeihinsa laittamista esim. ajan ja tilan säästämisen takia.

Sää on ollut parin viime viikon aikana tavanomaisen kesäinen. Päivälämpötilat ovat olleet +20 asteen tienoilla. Selkeinä ja tyyninä öinä lämpötila on laskenut eteläisen Suomen sisämaassa ajoittain lähelle +5 astetta, mutta kasvatuspaikoillanikaan ei ole enää tarvinnut pelätä hallaa. Kasvien kasvu on pysynyt 1 - 2 viikkoa edellä tavanomaisesta aikataulustaan. Sen huomaa tänään Juhannuksena Etelä-Suomessa mm. juhannusruusun (Rosa pimpinellifolia "Plena") lakanneena kukintana. Alkavalla viikolla aluksi saattaa olla melko viileää, mutta muutoin tavanomaisen lämmin kesäsää jatkuu ja sateita on tulossa sopivasti. Ehkä myös ukkosta... Kasvien kasvatuksen suhteen olosuhteet jatkuvat siis melko hyvinä.


Yesterday before starting the Juhannus (Mid Summer) festivities I removed the plants from indoors preprowing at my home to my nursery outdoors. They were indoors from the sowing of April onwards, so therefore they have been getting a plentyfull advance in their growing as compared to the growing situation in nature of southern Finland. That is good for these not so hardy species (in Finland), so that they would get ready properly for the next winter. In the pictures above you see the situations of the species in question at yesterday before removing. I could have removed the species allready three weeks ago as the risk of ground frost disappeared, but it goes well in this way too. Now the plants have a change to adapt to the outside air at an shadowy spot and after about two to three weeks time they can be planted into their separate containers. That big plants are a bit hard to separate from each other, but there'll be means to that also... The plants in that box will remain in their place until the next year. Many times before as well i have discovered that to be a good way to postbone putting of them into their own containers for example due to spearing time or space.

The weather has been typically summery during recent couple of weeks. Daytime temperatures have been around +20 C. In the inland areas of southern Finland during clear and calm nights temperatures have got down occasionally near +5 C, but in my plant growing places as well one hasn't been have to fear ground frost anymore. The growth of the plants have been remaining 1 - 2 weeks ahead of an average schedule. That is observed today at Juhannus from the ended flowering of Burned Rose cultivar (Rosa pimpinellifolia "Plena"); normally it would bloom at this time. During the next week there might be rather cool weather at first, but otherwise the typically warm summer weather will continue and there'll be enough rain. Perhaps a bit of thunder as well... So, the circumstances will continue rather good for the plant growing.

Eilen otin kuvia itäneistä sisäkylvöksistäni ja tässä ne ovat! Tähän mennessä eivät ole itäneet jumaltenpuu (Ailanthus altissima), molemmat sinisateet (Wisteria floribunda), (Wisteria sinensis) ja maakkia (Maackia amurensis). Maakkian kohtalo on jälleen kerran se, että siemenet mätänivät ennen itämistään. Tähän ongelmaan olen törmännyt joka kerta ko. Mustilan arboretumilta tilattujen ko. lajin siemenien kohdalla. Kanadannuppupuu sen sijaan iti tälläkin kertaa erinomaisesti, kuten kuvasta nähdään. Taimikasvatuspaikallani ulkona on viime vuoden nuppupuukylvös, mutta sen kohtalosta en osaa vielä sanoa. Isolehtikatsura (Cercidiphyllum magnificum) on itämässä ja alimmassa kuvassa oikealla tarkkaan katsomalla voi nähdä ainakin yhden sen taimista. Tällä kertaa ei muuta näistä. Kerron taas lisää kuvien kanssa arboretumasioistani, kunnes on jotain raportoitavaa.

Yesterday i took pictures of my germinated indoors sowings and here they are! Up to this point the species not to have germinated are; Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), both Wisterias (Wisteria floribunda), (Wisteria sinensis) and Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis). The fate of Amur Maackia is once again the fact, that its seeds became rotten before they germinated. I have faced this problem every time in the case of the seeds of this species ordered from Arboretum Mustila. As opposed to that the seeds of Eastern Redbud germinated also at this time excellently, as we can see from the picture. At my nursery outside there's the last year's Redbud sowing, but i can't say nothing yet about its fate. Bigleaf Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum magnificum) is germinating and in the lowest picture on the right looking closely one can see at least one of its seedlings. That's all this time about these. I will tell you again about my arboretum matters with pictures as soon as there's something to report about.
