Perinteinen Wapputervehdys 2008! - The traditional Wappu (The First Of May) greeting 2008!

Tässä on tämän vuoden Wapputervehdykseni! Kuvassa on idänsinililjaa (Scilla siberica) kuvattuna eilen Helsingin Kaisaniemen kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa. Kukinta oli tuossa jo selvästi loppuvaiheessa, mikä kuvastaa hyvin kasvukauden jopa noin 2 viikon etumatkaa tavanomaiseen aikatauluun verrattuna.
.
Tänään on viikon tähän mennessä lämpimin päivä (sisämaassa +20 astetta ylittyy monin paikoin), mutta huominen ja ylihuominen ovat päivien osalta ennakoitua vähän viileämpiä. Joka tapauksessa ainakin maanantaihin asti ilmamassa säilyy erittäin lämpimänä yölämpötilojen ollessa alimmillaan monena yönä paikoin jopa lähellä +10 astetta, kuten viime yönä täällä Helsingin seudulla.
.
Niinpä kasvukausi etenee edelleen erinomaisesti ja esim. rusokirsikan (Prunus sargentii) ja metsävaahteran (Acer platanoides) kukinnat huipentuvat viikonloppuna. Tuomen (Prunus padus) kukinta alkanee vasta ensi viikon puolella tämän uusimman arvioni mukaan.
.

Here is my this year's Vappu (The First Of May) greeting! There is Siberian Squill (Scilla siberica) in the photo as photographed yesterday at the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki. The blooming was in there clearly at its end phase, which is illustrating well growing season's even about two weeks advance compared to an average schedule.
.
Today is the warmest day of the week so far (+20 C is topped in many places in inland areas), but tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will be afternoonwise a bit cooler than expected earlier. In any case the air mass will stay at least up to monday very warm, where night temperatures will be at the lowest even near +10 C locally during many nights, like last night here in Helsinki region.
.
Therefore the growing season will proceed further excellently and for example the flowerings of Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii) and Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) will peak at the weekend. The blooming of Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) may start only during the next week according to this new estimation of mine.
.
There will be precipitation at least tomorrow and the day after tomorrow as showers with possible first weak thunder, but after that the weather appears to be unnecessarily dry regarding plant cultivation... Now I wish to the end fine Vappu to all (who knows and enjoys this festivity)!

Normaaleja, poikkeuksellisia ja tarpeettomia piirteitä keväässä - Normal, unusual and unnecessary appearances in the spring

Kuva on otettu viime lauantaina Meilahden arboretumissa Helsingissä.

Melko normaali huhtikuun tämän viikon sää on siis tulossa.

The new week has begun and new challenges are waiting. During last week significant matters regarding the weather were profuse rains and cooler weather conditions (afternoon temperatures mainly between +5 C and +10 C and the lowest night temperatures at about zero C) than in the week before. Due to that the proceeding of the thermal growing season was almost completely stopped especially during the week's end. Therefore the growing season is at this moment only about 2 - 3 weeks ahead of an average schedule. Lakes were already locally completely iceless; like Vanajavesi lake in Hämeenlinna. The profuse rains in early week and yesterday (there rained widely at least 10 - 20 millimetres and locally even almost 50 millimetres) kept the soil very wet. That helps to maintain moisture conditions good for a long time during the early phase of the growing season. After a normal winter that would be caused by the melting waters of snowcover. Last night a part of the precipitation came as snow in parts of southern Finland's inland areas, but that has already melted away as the weather has cleared up.

Let's study now at the same time the March weather chart of Puistola, Helsinki regarding the thermal definitions of winter and spring. We can observe from the chart, that during the latter part of March there were 9 days in the row so called winter days (the daily average temperature under zero C). The record mild "winter" caused a lot of pondering about the thermal definition of winter (A B C). As the end result including March the winter went for example at this weather station in this way; the thermal winter started from the frosty period of early January and it continued to the end of February (or alternatively to the 15th day of February according to me) despite the long mild period. Because the thermal spring was already under way in March, then that frosty period at the month's end wasn't thermal winter anymore, but just as a late winter weather (a so called "after winter") appeared in the middle of spring. Despite the fact, that it was longer than that January frosty period and that then happened the most snowy situation of all "winter".

Above there is a photo from my last week's plant photography trips and it shows one special feature of this spring, which has never been appeared before this clearly in garden and park maintenance. The photo is taken last saturday at the arboretum of Meilahti in Helsinki. The photo reveals a confusion and on the other hand a plain ignorance caused by the record mild winter and partly thanks to that the favourable advancing of the spring. I have seen that protection method locally elsewhere as well in recent times. The confusion is due to the unadaptable ways of many people (in this case even people of my profession!) at the face of a new circumstance and the ignorance is an indifference and / or an inability to perceive the new circumstance in question.

After a normal, only a bit mild or severe winter those kinds of protections are done to those conifer shrubs, small conifers trees and other evergreen plants, which are sensitive to spring's sun scorch due to yet a deeply frozen soil; otherwise the plants will have to evaporate more water than they can suck from the ground. This spring there hasn't been that need for the protection at all absolutely everywhere in southern Finland, because the soil has been extremely little frozen in March as well (at the end of the month the snowcover as well prevented the freez) and in this photo's situation it had been completely melted already for several days. Record breakingly and in an easily observed way!

Therefore this protection task has been entirely a waste of work, which would have been better to be directed elsewhere. In addition it would have been better for this Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca "Conica") as well, that it would have been able to take all benefit out of the spring sun all the time, when the thermal growing season as well has already been ongoing during many days in April. The conifers doesn't do frost sensitive growth for a long time yet despite of that, which doesn't give reason either for that kind of protection. Possibly coming night frosts as well don't mean anymore a soil freez causing this need for protection. The climate change will increase these kinds of situations in the future and it will decrease work in that way.

To the end about this week's cultivation weather; during the early week southern Finland will be between western and eastern high pressures in a ridge of high pressure and the air mass will warm a little in there; afternoon temperatures may rise after tomorrow a bit above +10 C especially in inland areas. Night temperatures will be at the most couple of degrees under zero C especially in inland areas. During the week's end there may be so much low pressure activity in the northeast and east, that a cool northwesterly - northerly wind will prevent yet the air to warm up more. The precipitation will be at the most as light showers during the week. The thermal growing season will continue slowly at least during few days thanks to those temperatures and the possible night frosts being that minor will be insignificant at this phase. So, there will be a rather normal weather regarding April's this week.

Toinen peräkkäinen ennätysvarhainen kasvukauden alku! - The second record early growing season's start in the row!

Kevät on todella alkanut etenemään erinomaisella tavalla viime päivien aikana tavanomaista lämpimämmän sään ansiosta. Yllä on kuva haavan (Populus tremula) hedekukinnan alkuvaiheesta. Kuva on otettu 1.4.2008 Espoon Tapiolassa ja kukinta on edennyt tilanteesta jo täyteen vaiheeseen tällä hetkellä. Haavan kukinta (hedenorkkojen venyminen "kissavaiheesta" tuulessa lerpattaviksi pötköiksi) on aina hyvä merkki termisen kasvukauden alkamisesta.

Alkamispäivä on sarjan ensimmäinen päivä.

.
Lisäksi kasvien hyödyksi on odotettavissa raikkaita kevätvesisateita.

The spring has really started to proceed in an excellent way during last few days thanks to the warmer than an average weather. Above there is a photo of the early stage male blooming of European Aspen (Populus tremula). The photo is taken at the 1st of April 2008 in the district of Tapiola in Espoo and the blooming has now proceeded from the situation already to the full phase at this moment. The blooming of European Aspen (male catkins getting longer from the "furry stage" to long tubes wailing in the wind) is always a good sign of the thermal growing season's start. The same applies to this spring as well. Last year this phase was even few days earlier thanks to the record warm end of March, but this year as well the growing season has now started very much earlier than on an average. The spring being so early already for the second year in the row, is really an astonishing and sensational matter!

Let's study again the definition of the growing season's start. Last year I wrote these two articles (this and at the 3rd of May 2007 with the headline: Väärän tiedon korjaamista jälleen kerran; kasvukauden alku - Correcting false information once again; the start of the growing season) about the matter, because in many directions there were unclear visions and according to my knowlege false conclusions as well of the issue. The definition is as follows; the growing season begins, when the daily average temperature has been at least five days in the row more than +5 C. The starting day is the first day of the series. Now in a large area of southern Finland there have been these days of more than +5 C in a row already since the 31th of March! The coming days up to sunday appear to be further approximately equally as warm, when now the start of the growing season according to the definition is happening clearer than last year. That is again a good example of the global warming's influences and the change is really noticeable already.

Today I went to the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki to start my this year's plant photography project (I have already photographed plants occasionally in February as well, though). Two significant observations came clearly on my way there as well. Firstly, that phase of the growing season's start; all comparing plants in that other last year's article are now as well precisely at the same growth stage as they were then at the years 2006 and 2007. This year the extremely record breaking mildness of the "winter" caused these plants starting their growth the earliest to begin growth already during February, but that hasn't been altered the growth's phase significantly as compared to the thermal definition in the light of those previous two years. Though, different Alder (Alnus sp.) specimens are blooming in more differing times than earlier; the reason being the blooming period stretched very long.

Secondly, all the species started their growth already in February and in any case before the late winter of the March's end haven't been suffering hardly at all from that winter's even about -10 C of frost. Surely there may appear yet some damages in delay, but I observed again many early growing plants to be very frost tolerant; amongst others Mezereon (Daphne mezereum), Danford Iris (Iris "Danfordiae"), Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), Spring Meadow Saffron (Bulbocodium vernum) are continuing their blooming very well at the botanical garden now as well and many Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.) and Cherry Princepia (Prinsepia sinensis) being unfolded their leaves are continuing their growth in a healthy way. So, regarding plants one doesn't have to worry too much damages caused by unexpected weather conditions. Plant genes have generally really much of substance in the prepairing for unexpected situations.

So, during the coming days the weather will be favourable for the proceeding of the growing season. Regarding garden maintenace this means extremely early for example the fact, that in the cases of plants requiring dormancy stage, the good period of tree and shrub maintenance cuttings had come to a close already due to the start of the growth. Here is again one example about the fact, how the climate change is affecting the times of garden and park tasks; traditional times are becoming earlier in spring and later in autumn. This is a concrete reality also during this spring and adapting to it seems to be requiring further way too much in some cases; for example this garden shop (it says in the advertisement, that the shop will open during only latter part of April) is way too late in the opening of the spring's selling season this year as well. All garden shops should be open already now, because for example I myself need already fertilizers and compost amongst others for my arboretum project. In addition the soil already completely melted is making every kinds of planting tasks possible already now here in southern Finland and therefore one should be able to buy all plants easily from now on from everywhere (frost sensitive seasonal summerflowers are of course a different matter). Shame on you for being late!
.
Update at the 5th of April at 10:05 PM: today it has been even a surprisingly cold day (temperatures all the time a bit under +5 C), because the frontal system arrived from the west with its rains has proceeded more eastwards than forecasted and already since the yesterday evening there spreaded foggy and cold marine air mass from the southwest in the foreside of the front. Therefore at this moment the growing season's advancing has come to a standstill. Tomorrow the weather will warm up again, but during coming days southern Finland will remain within the influence of low pressures reaching from the south and west and the warmer air mass in the south - southeast doesn't have a proper change to influence. However, afternoon temperatures will reach occasionally about +10 C and the profuse cloudiness will make nights so much mild, that the thermal advancing of the growing season isn't completely paused. In addition there are expected fresh spring rains to favour of plants.

Ensimmäisten kylvöjen esivalmisteluita, kevät 2008 - Pre-preparations of the first sowings, spring 2008

Hedelmäkuorien poisto samettisumakin siemenistä - The removing of the fruit coats from the Staghorn Sumac seeds.

The upper pair of photos is telling today's doings with my seeds. In the lower photo there are in the soaking Peanut Butter Shrub / Harlequin Glory Bower (Clerodendrum trichotomum), Sweet Shrub / Carolina Allspice / Strawberry Shrub / Bubby Bush (Calycanthus floridus var. laevigatus) and Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox), which I placed into the soaking today. Their sowing will happen in 1 - 2 days time. Redvein Enkianthus (Enkianthus campanulatus) doesn't need the soaking, but I will sow it at the same time with those others. These species are very winter sensitive shrubs (in Finland), which I take into an experimentation at this phase. Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) will go yet to a cold treatment after that same soaking.

In the upper photo there are pre-preparations of Staghorn Sumac (Rhus hirta) seeds for their hot water scarification; the sowing is done immediately after that. I rubbed the fruit coats away between my fingers, which was a dirty job, as you can see from the photo. In this link there are good instructions about the scarification and other pre-treatments of the seeds. I am making the hot water scarification for the first time in my life and I will then wait the result after sowing with exitement later in the spring... I will make the scarification and the sowing at the same time with the sowings of those mentioned species.

I updated into these seed photo series (A B) the mentioned measures. I also added the photos of Tree-of-heaven and Staghorn Sumac seeds onto the series 1.

Lisää siemeniä ja tietoja itävyyden arvioimisesta - More seeds and information about estimating germination ability

Neidonhiuspuun siemeniä liotuksessa - Maidenhair Tree seeds in the soaking.

Tässä on pari huomioitavaa seikkaa päättyneeltä viikonlopulta siementen suhteen. Molemmat kuvat on otettu eilen. Alemmassa kuvassa on suuri määrä rusokirsikan (Prunus sargentii) siemeniä, joita olin säilyttänyt jääkaapissani yli kaksi vuotta.

Ylemmässä kuvassa on muutama päivä sitten liotukseen laitetut neidonhiuspuun (
Ginkgo biloba) siemenet. Siinä tapauksessa itävyys on huono.

Here are couple matters to notice from the ended weekend regarding seeds. Both photos are taken yesterday. In the lower photo there are a big amount of Sargent Cherry (
Prunus sargentii) seeds, which I had been storing in my fridge for over two years. I collected them in the summer 2006 at the district of Tapiola in Espoo and I decided to take them in use only now. The seeds had been in their rotten fruit flesh, but they are seeming perfectly well after the cleaning. I'll plan to sow three small parts at the time during next three years. Now, for the first part it is the turn of about two months long cold treatment.

In the upper photo there are Maidenhair Tree (
Ginkgo biloba) seeds placed in soaking few days ago. In the left pot there are seeds of Exotic Garden in and in the right pot seeds of Arboretum Mustila. In one pot all the seeds have suncken and in the other all have remained floating except one. From this one can be able to estimate a germination ability of the seeds especially in the cases of these kinds of big seeds. The floating means the fact, that the inner part of the seed has remained further partly dry and it therefore contains air. In that case the germination ability will be bad. The suncken seeds have been sucking well more moisture removing at the same time floating helping air and they have been demonstrating therefore ability to germinate. So, at this phase I would be expecting even more than five seedlings of Maidenhair Tree... I will put the seeds to the cold treatment today and I will be waiting with a big interest for the later germination, because this species have been earlier a very difficult case in my experiments.

Lisää siemeniä kevään 2008 kylvöohjelmaan - More seeds to the sowing program of the spring 2008

Kuvat on otettu eilen. Lajit ovat; keisaripuu (Paulownia tomentosa), keltatrumpettipuu (Catalpa ovata), eteläntrumpettipuu (Catalpa bignonioides), sinisade (Wisteria sinensis) ja neidonhiuspuu (Ginkgo biloba). Tulevista käsittelyistä on tiedot ko. kuvissa.

I added to these seed photo sets (A B) few species, which I found yet in my fridge and which I will include to this spring's sowing program. The photos are taken yesterday. The species are; Foxglove Tree / Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa), Chinese Catalpa (Catalpa ovata), Southern Catalpa / Indian Beantree (Catalpa bignonioides), Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) and Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba). Information about the coming treatments are in the photos in question. The germination of Maidenhair Tree might be very difficult, so in that case there is a reason to be prepaired for even more than a year long waiting... Note, there aren't photos from a part of the seeds put in pre-treatments in December.

Helmikuun 2008 siementen kuvat ja esikäsittelytietoja - The photos of the February 2008 seeds and pre-treatment information

Ennen kylmäkäsittelyyn laittamista siemenet ovat 1 - 2 päivän mittaisessa liotuksessa pusseissaan; vettä vaihdetaan usein. Kuva on otettu tänään - Before putting into the cold treatment the seeds are in 1 - 2 days long soaking in their bags; water is changed often. The photo is taken today.

Here are the links (A B) to the photos of the seeds I received last month from Arboretum Mustila and Exotic Garden. I took the photos this week and among there are some same species, which I have had before as well. Now I have decided about the sowing of the seeds this spring and I placed onto those photos in question information about their treatments at this moment; in the future I will change the information, as the process is proceeding. At the same time I removed these species to the cold treatment from the earlier warm treatment; Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa), an American Basswood cultivar (Tilia americana "Redmond"), Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), Chinese Flowering Dogwood (Cornus kousa v. chinensis), Prickly Castor-oil Tree (Kalopanax septemlobus).

I made possible this large amount of sowing by deciding the following in my arboretum project; as inspired by the recent record warm weather and therefore foreseeing the climate change I want now to concentrate more than before to cultivating rare and winter sensitive species. Due to that I decided now to destroy a part of common and familiar species at my nursery, because time and resources are limited and therefore I cannot cultivate everything. I might return again in some year to those more familiar species (I will tell the names of the destroyed species later, when the measure has been taken place).

Earlier this week there would have been a possibility again to do nursery tasks of melted soil, but my schedule didn't give room for that this time. During yesterday evening at my nursery and here in the district of Tapiola in Espoo it snowed couple of centimetres and due to the cold weather of the coming days the snow will remain on the ground as preventing the start of spring tasks. According to the newest information this small winter will continue at least to the end of the starting week despite a minor warming after the coldest phase during the early part of the week...

Ennätyssula taimistotyö ja tietoja viikonlopun pakkasesta - The record unfrozen nursery task and information about the frost at the weekend

Mantsurianjalopähkinä - Manchurian Walnut (Juglans mandschurica)

Japaninjalopähkinä - Japanese Walnut (Juglans ailanthifolia)

Sirotuomipihlaja - Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis)

Valkomulperi - White Mulberry (Morus alba)

Tänään kävin juuri ennen pimeän tuloa tekemässä taimistotöitä... HELMIKUUSSA!! Viime päivien erittäin leuto sää on odotetusti sulattanut taimikasvatuspaikallanikin maan kokonaan moneksi päiväksi.

Tähän loppuun uutta tarkempaa tietoa to - la kylmästä jaksosta.

Today I went to do nursery tasks just before the nightfall... In FEBRUARY!! The very mild weather during recent days has melted also at my nursery place the soil completely for many days as expected. The soil was typically very wet and many herbaceous weeds were green and growing, like in the lowest photo on that one container. This kind of unfrozen soil of February is extremely special (at least according to the previous climate) and the most astonishing matter of all time is the fact, that nursery tasks of unfrozen soil have been possible to do now during all "winter months" in the row; December, January and February. Unbelievable! One wasn't able to fantazise this to be possible two years ago. What will be next?!

About the tasks themselves; I continued the unfinished tasks of loosening the containers rooted into the ground for them to be handled further. I took example photos from the plants at the same time and they are above. European Smoketree (Cotinus coggygria) and Regel's Threewingnut (Tripterygium regelii) are missing from the photos, because due to the dusk those photos didn't become successfull. Those and White Mulberry I will be changing into bigger containers and all the others I will be planting onto the arboretum area later in spring. There were about 50 pieces of the loosen containers. Allegheny Serviceberry appeared to have grown its buds a bit, but otherwise this "pre-spring" hasn't been affecting yet in a visible way to my nursery's species.

Here to the end new and more precise information about the cold period during thursday - saturday. It will be possible, that the severest frosts of this "winter" will be reached at the night between friday and saturday in southern Finland. That would be made possible by a calm and clear ridge of high pressure following the northerly wind; if that will be hitting precisely at the night - morning before the mild westerly wind, then there might be a bit colder than -15 C for a short time in southern Finland's inland areas and for example in Helsinki by the coast colder than -10 C. However, these values as well are really insignificant as compared to the fact, how during every previous winter in the era of weather measurements also the mildest winters have included at least couple of short periods of about -20 C frosts in many places around southern Finland; there is a surface pressure map history beginning from the 19th century in Wetterzentrale pages, from which one can conclude the matter.

Syyshortensioiden talviestetiikan hoitoa - A winter esthetic's care of Panicle Hydrangeas

Syyshortensiaa taivasta vasten - A piece of Panicle Hydrangea against the sky.

Syyshortensioita maisemassa - Panicle Hydrangeas in the landscape.

Kuvat on otettu eilen Espoon Tapiolan keskustan viereisellä Leimuniityllä. Alimmassa kuvassa nähdään tapa, jolla kukinnot alkavat katkeilla sään vaikutuksesta (tuuli ja märän lumen paino). Keskimmäisessä kuvassa nähdään koko pensasryhmän olemusta ja ylimmässä kuvassa on esimerkki hyvin säilyneestä kukkaterttutilanteesta.
.
.
.
.
Let's observe now the situation of the withered flower racemes of Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata "Grandiflora") at this phase of the "winter". Earlier in the autumn 2007 I criticized strongly the removing of these flower panicles at a too early stage (the two critical articles are found in the places of October and November), because they are for a long time fine dry flower ornaments. Especially during so mild and snowless winters as this, all these kinds of esthetic matters and preserving of them are significant in all environment.
.
The photos above tell about the fact, that the panicles have been started to show breaking up during January. The photos are taken yesterday in the Leimuniitty meadow beside the center of Tapiola in Espoo. In the lowest photo we see the way, how the panicles are starting to be broken due to the influence of the weather (the wind and the weight of wet snow). In the middle photo we see the appearance of the whole shrub group and in the upmost photo there is an example of a well preserved flower panicle situation.
.
At this phase the maintenance cutting of the panicles (the cultivar is treated this way, when the next summer's panicles are desired to be big) is starting to be topical and at matter of fact the cutting was under way with the other shrub group of the place. When looking at the middle photo, one can conclude, that it is just about necessary. The right cutting time would be the time, when most of the panicles have been broken away. According to my estimation the cutting time should be stretched in this regard to around the turn of January - February depending on the weather's influences. The cutting can be done later as well only in spring before the start of the growing season. Differences of locality must be observed as well; a wind sheltered spot will offer cultivar's dry flower phase probably for a longer time than a windy spot. A plentyfull amount of wet snow might be getting to accumulate onto the panicles at such spot with more destructive results, though.

Sulan maan taimistotöitä keskellä "talvea"! - Nursery tasks of unfrozen soil in the middle of "winter"!

Maasta irrotettuja purkkitaimia - Container plants loosen off the ground.

Hyvin leuto sää on sulattanut maan käytännössä kokonaan, mikä mahdollisti tekemäni toimet. En mennyt siis istuttamaan arboretumalueelleni, vaikka sekin olisi ollut mahdollista sulan maan ansiosta.

Taimistolla huomasin peltomyyrien (Microtus agrestis) tehneen yllättäviä tuhoja, joita nähdään alemmassa kuvassa. Siinä on syötyjä katsuran (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) taimia.

Today I went to do tasks at my nursery, which is a very significant matter at this phase of January. Normally the soil would be frozen several centimetres deep and there would be snow about 20 centimetres. The very mild weather has been melted the soil completely in practice, which made possible the tasks I did. So, I didn't went to do planting at my arboretum, allthough that also would have been possible thanks to the unfrozen soil.

At the nursery I noticed Field Voles (Microtus agrestis) to have done surprising damages, which are seen in the lower photo. There are eaten Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) plants in there. It looks like a makeshift will do for Voles, as delicasies are being protected. Fortunately only a small part of all Katsura Trees were eaten. Therefore I immediately protected the rest of them with the Mota -repellent. The protection has been effective on the other plants, because there weren't any other eating marks to be seen since the previous visit.

However, my main task was this time to loosen the biggest container plants off the ground. So, the plants had been rooted into the ground and I wanted now to make the spring's planting program easier, as loosen the plants going to the planting the first. I digged about 50 plants off the ground with a shovel and it was rather troublesome, because the soil was on many spots very wet and tough clay. In the upper photo are the loosen plants as settled down again onto their places; the species are Japanese Wingnut (Pterocarya rhoifolia), Amur Corktree (Phellodendron amurense) and Bird Cherry (Prunus padus). Outside the photo I did the same to Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) as well.

The matter to be counted for in the loosening was to cut too big roots shorter. That was made easily with the shovel. In this way the plants can be taken off the containers easier at the time of a planting. This space of time was excellent for the task also due to the fact, that the plants are in dormancy and therefore they're not so liable to a stress. There remained yet plants to be loosen. Tomorrow the weather will be very poor, but at sunday there would be a change to continue the task, if the soil is yet unfrozen. Though, the loosening of the remaining plants can wait for the next situation of an unfrozen soil. It remains to be seen, when that will happen...

Syksyinen talvityö taimistossa - An autumnal winter task at the nursery

Työväline siirappimaisen kasvinsuojelunesteen levittämiseen - A tool for the spreading out of a syruplike plant protection liquid.

Tänään kävin viimein tekemässä sen karkoteainekäsittelyn taimikasvatuspaikallani. Kuvissa (otettu tänään taimistolla) nähdään työhön käytetty väline ja aine. Alemmassa kuvassa on itse neste 5 litran astiassa.
.
.
Tärkeimmät käsiteltävät kasvit (myyrien suosimat) olivat kaikki pihlajat (Sorbus sp.), vaahterat (Acer sp.), omenat (Malus sp.), kirsikan suku (Prunus sp.) ja ussurinpäärynä (Pyrus ussuriensis).
Sula maa mahdollisti samalla taimipurkkien siirtoa; laitoin yksittäisiä purkkeja vähemmän kosteille kohdille (talvella märkyys on usein haitta). Täydensin myös muutamaan purkkiin vähän uutta multaa taimien tyvien suojaksi; talvenarkoja lajeja.
.
.
.
Today I finally went to do that repellent liquid treatment at my nursery. In the photos (taken today at the nursery) we see the tool and the stuff (Mota repellent liquid) used for the task. The liquid itself is in a 5 liter container in the lower photo. That container have been in my use already for couple of years and before this use there was about 1 / 3 left of the liquid. After the use there was left about 1 / 5 of it.
.
The purpose of the liquid spreaded out onto plants is to expel with its bad smell plant eating animals away from the plants or at least restrain their eating appetite. The liquid will remain in place as a glue for several months. The best grabbing will happen, as the surface is dry. The liquid is spreaded out onto the twigs and at this place especially onto the plant bases. The only animal threat in winter towards my plants are namely Field Voles (Microtus agrestis). Rabbits are being repelled with a steel net allready at the time of the nursery's establishing. I made the spreading out with the 0,5 metres long bamboo stick in the upper photo. This liquid is so much sticky and syruplike, that it can be drained down the stick easily onto the plants (at first of course the stick is being wetted in the container).
.
The most important treated plants (favoured by the voles) were all Mountain Ashes (Sorbus sp.), Maples (Acer sp.), Crab Apples (Malus sp.), the Cherry genus (Prunus sp.) and Chinese Pear (Pyrus ussuriensis). Voles had been had time to eat Oakleaf Mountain Ashes (Sorbus hybrida), but their death doesn't cause much harm at this phase. I drained the liquid also onto the ground on such spots, where there appeared piles made by the voles.
.
The appearance of the very mild weather showed at my nursery as well, because the ground was completely unfrozen and many hay plants and so called weeds were further green and even growing a bit. The unfrozen soil made possible at the same time moving of the plant containers; I placed single containers onto less wet places (during winter wet conditions are often harmfull). I also added a bit of new compost onto few containers to create shelter for plant bases; winter sensitive species.
