Siementen esikäsittelyt, joulukuu 2007 - The pre-treatments of the seeds, December 2007

Narrinpensas (Decaisnea fargesii), hopealehmus (Tilia tomentosa), amerikanlehmuslajike (Tilia americana "Redmond"), mantsurianvaahtera (Acer mandschuricum), pennsylvanianvaahtera (Acer pennsylvanicum), sirovaahtera (Acer sieboldianum), huntuvaahtera (Acer triflorum), (kukka)kanukka (Cornus florida), kanukkalaji (Cornus kousa v. chinensis), euroopanpyökki (Fagus sylvatica), mustasaarni (Fraxinus nigra), partapensas (Chionanthus virginicus), koreankeltis (Celtis koraiensis), kiinansaarni (Fraxinus chinensis v. rhyncophylla), seitsensormiaralia (Kalopanax septemlobus), kuriilienkirsikka (Prunus nipponica v. kurilensis), punatammi (Quercus rubra).

Pidin pussit auki. Yleensä 1 - 2 päivää riittää liotukseen. Seitsensormiaralian siemenet piti ottaa liotuksen aikana pois hedelmälihastaan.

Eilen laitoin siemenet pusseissaan käsittelyihin; laitoin pusseihin hiekkaa n. kolme kertaa ko. siementen määrän verran.

Last friday my arboretum project proceeded so much, that I went through all my seeds found in my fridge and I chose these species underneath to pre-treatments (stratification) and to next spring's sowings. Later in the winter I might put more species into shorter treatments and some doesn't even need treatments...

Blue Bean Shrub (Decaisnea fargesii), Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa), American Basswood cultivar (Tilia americana "Redmond"), Manchurian Maple (Acer mandschuricum), Striped Maple / Moosewood (Acer pennsylvanicum), Siebold Maple (Acer sieboldianum), Three-flower Maple (Acer triflorum), Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), Chinese Flowering Dogwood (Cornus kousa v. chinensis), European Beech (Fagus sylvatica), Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra), Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus), Korean Nettletree (Celtis koraiensis), Beakleaf Chinese Ash (Fraxinus chinensis v. rhyncophylla), Prickly Castor-oil Tree (Kalopanax septemlobus), Japanese Alpine Cherry (Prunus nipponica v. kurilensis), Red Oak (Quercus rubra).

The purpose of the pre-treatments is to unlock different dormancy conditions of the seeds, in order them to be able to germinate well in the spring. Here (-> Siemenhinnasto -> Ominaisuuksia) are genus relating pre-treatment times of Arboretum Mustila; in finnish, but I believe the chart is quite readible, though; stratifiointi = pre-treatment in days, lämmin = warm, kylmä = cold. From those species the bolded ones will have at this phase a warm treatment at first and then after about 2 - 3 months a cold treatment. The others will have now only a cold treatment. Because the starting of treatments have been delayed up to here, those Lindens / Basswoods won't have the most optimal treatment. However, I decided to try anyway. Treatments of the others will be getting enough in such a way, that the seeds are ready to be sowed around April - May.

The seeds to be put in pre-treatments are in plastic bags (10 x 11 centimetres) in the photo. A prepairing for the treatment beginned in sunday with soaking. The seeds have to be get to suck water inside of them before the treatments. An exception is Red Oak, which seeds are in their own bigger bag (not in the photo). The acorns in question doesn't need to be soaked, because they have had to be kept moist all the time anyway. I prolonged the soaking up to yesterday. In the soaking I put water in the bags and I changed it two times a day. I kept the bags open. Usually 1 - 2 days are enough for the soaking. The seeds of Prickly Castor-oil Tree were have to be taken away from their fruit flesh during the soaking.

Yesterday I put the seeds into treatments in their bags; I put sand into bags for the amount of about three times the amount of the seeds in question. Then I watered the sand in such a way, that the moisture in the sand is a bit less than it can be able to hold. Too much of moisture can cause for example a mould or the seeds can be suffocated due to a lack of air. Therefore there must be done holes onto the bags; as stinging at least 30 times around the bag with for example two stinged fork. Then conditions of moisture and the seeds must be observed weekly. Moisture is added when needed and too early germinating seeds must be sowed. The bags put in the warm treatment are in indoors temperature in the dark and the bags being in the cold treatment are in the fridge, which temperature is set a bit under +5 C.

Jääkö kaappiin tilaa ruoallekin :)? Melkoinen määrä pusseja näyttäisi olevan...

Kiitos blogimme asiantuntevasta kommentoinnista.
