Lokakuun 2006 Flickr sarjat - Flickr sets of October 2006

After about a week long pause here is again monthly photo sets of the blog trilogy. Now it's the turn of the photo sets of October 2006. I haven't published these photos anywhere else before, as i have allready mentioned. In other words here you are, a portion of the autumn; The blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3!

Lumensyvyystiedot tarkentuvat - The snow depth informations are getting more precise

There was a news in the pages of the Finnish Meteorological Institute this week, that the snow depth value measurements are getting more precise (unfortunately there's no english version link available, but in brief i tell you, that the
Finnish Meteorological Institute is working together with the laboratory of the Space Technology at the Helsinki University of Technology to create a better method to make more precise snow depth and snow water value measurements with the help of satellites). This is a good news for example concerning my own interests. I have been longing for a long time for a better springtime information to the snow depth maps of the Finnish Meteorological Institute itself. Hopefully that new method will be showing on there in the near future. Now that snow depth map in question appears to be very inaccurate and even misleading during especially springtimes, if one cannot interpret it or one doesn't have experience of nature concerning that.

For example in the snow depth informations of this day's map the fields of the lightest blue and the second lightest blue aren't evenly the mentioned snow depth value, but in a typical way of spring there appear great differences in depths and various melted spots appear up to even large snowfree areas due to differences in microclimates in forests, fields and slopes and so on. During springtime the snowcover is uneven due to the strong radiation of the sun as well, where the shadowy and cold soil type surfaces are melting in a much different rate than sunny and warm soil type areas. In addition the snowcover formed during winter is for starters uneven as winds have been drifted snow in various ways and thaw periods have been compressed the cover differently on different spots. The melting and freezing back and forth is also affecting in various ways on different areas. All this is appearing differently every year.

I have been observing and telling about earlier as well, that in the snow depth map in question there are inconsistent matters appearing in the showing of the snow melting; for example in some region the last light blue area was showed larger in the following day, allthough the melting was continuing all the time. That is of course impossible, but is it resulted by the fact, where the snow depth value of a some weather observation post was missing and it affected to the map?... In any case these kinds of faults are sticking into my eyes easily and there have always been plenty of them every spring as long as this map has been appearing.

The current method clearly doesn't give chance to better ways, but especially during spring one improvement would be the fact, where on the same or on a different map (also in a different scale) there would be showed the grade of the snowcover's spottyness with for example in raster fields (or in colour fields on a different map). This index would be showing the portion of the snowfree soil as in percents on every concerned area. The raster fields would be for example;
25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The portion of the snowfree soil would be observed both with ones eyes around the region of every weather observing posts at the time of the snow depth measurement and mixing that information with that new information received from a satellite. In this way the difficult springtime regional differences in snowcover would be better to comprehent and at the same time differences between regions and springs would be better observed in the habit of the melting snow concerning also the spottyness and the settlements of the snowcover.

At the most precise these kinds of informations would be usefull for example in the examination of microclimatical matters. We know that microclimatical matters are important for example in the cultivation of plants both in agriculture and in gardens and parks. There is also a connection with the habit of the soil frost in here. On a general level this evaluation and showing of the snowcover's spottyness would give much more realistic view to the melting of the snow during sprintime than it has been possible up to now.

Maaliskuun kesän vaikutuksia - Influences of the March summer

Nähtäväksi jää, kuinka ankara takatalvi on silloin mahdollinen...

Kasvukauden alkamispäivä on tänä vuonna eteläisessä Suomessa paikkakunnasta riippuen n. 23. - 24.3. Huomisesta lähtien kasvukausi kuitenkin keskeytyy, koska vuorokauden keskilämpötilat laskevat alle +5 asteen. Nyt saattaa seurata jopa useita viikkoja kestävä jakso, jolloin kasvukausi on keskeytynyt. Normaalisti kasvukauden alku tapahtuisi huhtikuun lopulla.

So it was to happen, that there was reached yet another all time record of high March temperature in tuesday the 27th of March. It happened at the airport of Helsinki - Vantaa and the value was +17,5 C. As opposed to that at the center of Helsinki near the sea there was at the same time cooler than the day before, because the sea breeze affected more than before. The same applied to wednesday and yesterday as well. Temperatures remained between +10 C and +14 C by the narrow southern coast, as in inland areas of southern Finland there was even about +16 C during afternoons up to yesterday. Today this enormous March "summer" is ending, because allready tomorrow temperatures will stay under +10 C during the afternoon. In sunday the weather will warm up a bit, but during the next week the weather will become clearly colder. It remains to be seen, how severe wintry weather there will be possible...

This ending wave of warm weather has now resulted a beginning of the growing season never seen before. So there was confirmed yesterday, that the growing season has now beginned in southern Finland. It has never happened before in March as far as i know. The starting day of the growing season in southern Finland is this year according to the region about 23rd. - 24th of March. However from tomorrow onwards the growing season is interrupted, because the daily mean temperatures will sink below +5 C. Now there might be following even a several weeks long period, where the growing season is interrupted. Normally the growing season would start at the end of April.

However the continuing of the growing season as resulted by a new wave of warm weather mustn't be considered as an actual start of the growing season despite its even very long pause, but the growing season will be continuing there, where it's now interrupted. The value of the effective temperature sum describing the phase of the growing season is now in southern Finland locally varying about 5 to 15, where it will now stay for a some period of time... Last year the corresponding values were accumulated right in the last days of April. This amount of warmth appeared then and now as well in the same way as for example as beginned blooming of European Aspen (
Populus tremula) and Goat Willow (Salix caprea) and opened puds of some shrub and tree species; as Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.) amongst others. In this way the start of the growing season appears this year concretically as well despite the very odd time of the year.

The wave of warm weather has of course been surprising in various ways and it has been causing new problems for me during this week. It has messed my schedules of updating my blogs and my photographing
for example. Suddenly there was a lot of to photograph concerning plants as well and at the same time i wanted to start spring tasks of my arboretum project. Therefore i visited my arboretum area in Sipoo (near Helsinki) in thursday the 29th of March and i did fertilizing tasks there. I've been busy otherwise as well and therefore the updating of the blog trilogy photo sets have been interrupted on my Flickr pages. However on that front things are starting to happen again during this weekend and therefore it is worth to wait for information allready tomorrow in this blog concerning that. Tomorrow or in sunday i will tell you with photos about that first visit of the year to my arboretum. Plans concerning my plant photographing are also starting to be ready for publishing soon and i will tell about that in the near future...

Erikoisuudet ylittävät itsensä - The peculiarities are topping themselves

Kuvassa nähdään lämpötila eilen iltapäivällä n. klo. 17.00. kuvattuna Helsingin keskustassa Kampissa. Keväälle tyypillinen merituuli ei päässyt tuona päivänä viilentämään tätä paikkaa sisämaata viileämmäksi, koska yleinen (geostrofinen) ilmavirtaus luoteesta - pohjoisesta kumosi merituulen vaikutuksen. Niinpä ennätyslämpö valtasi koko Helsinginkin - In the picture we see the temperature yesterday afternoon at about 5 pm as photographed in the center of Helsinki at Kamppi. The typical springtime sea breeze didn't have a change to cool down the air at this place cooler than in inland areas during that day, because the general (geostrofical) air flow from the northwest - north overruled the influence of the sea breeze. Therefore the record breaking warmth invaded the whole Helsinki too.

Tällä hetkellä on tavallaan hauskaa blogata Suomen säästä, koska saa keksiä runsaasti ylisanoja sitä kuvaamaan. Kuten eilen arvelin, niin eilen saavutettiin uusi kaikkien aikojen maaliskuun lämpöennätys.

At this moment it is in a way funny to blog about the weather in Finland, because one can invent a lot of superlatives to describe it. As i suspected yesterday, there was reached the new all time record of high temperature in March. So the previous record was measured in the 24th of March in 1945 in Kumlinge (in the island region of southwestern corner of Finland) and then the reading was +16,0 C. Yesterday there was measured +16,3 C in Espoo and Jokioinen (in parts of even Lapland there was more than +10 C)! Today that reading can be topped and perhaps even today's reading as well tomorrow, so therefore i'll be waiting with exitement the proceeding of the week... If that will happen, isn't it then telling very loudly about the climate change; normally it would be impossible, that the all time record of high temperature would be broken in two days in a row let alone three days in a row. That is also unexpected, that several all time records are topped within the same year; the drought of the summer, all time record of high temperature in December and this wave of warm weather.

It looks like we're in an interim period into the new climate, where even the statistics are becoming new in a fastened rate. Actually we are allready living that long forecasted future. Not counted for the short cold periods (at the beginning of last November and during February) there have been allmost all the time much warmer than usually in southern Finland during a period of over half a year. This wave of warm air is also an example again of the fact, that completely new kinds of circumstances appear; for example within the spring migration of the birds there have been observed record breakingly much new arrival records of all time during last couple of weeks. Never before in history there aren't known so many bird species (even more than 10) to have done so. Yesterday as well i observed same kind of phenomenon within the plant kingdom, as i went for a visit to photograph in the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki; there were allready many bulbous plants in profuse bloom and puds of many woody plants were opening and with couple of species even opened allready in the way like normally in the last week of April.

So the cicumstances are new in such a way, that many people seem to have problems at dealing with them. Yesterday for example in the even summery warmth of the afternoon there were both people with winter glothing and summer glothing wandering around the center of Helsinki. I was glothing myself according to the weather ;)... There appeared problems also in the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in this new situation; as being put as a winter protection for some perennials and bulbous plants there were yet in place on the ground twigs of conifer trees, allthough the plants are allready pushing through them even into full bloom in some cases.

So, how one can deal with gardening tasks in this time of the year in this situation? Firstly now it's in a way the end of April and tasks of that time can allready be done. As i mentioned yesterday, for example planting tasks are included here as the soil is unfrozen. Of course this doesn't apply to frost sensitive seasonal flowers, but for example trees with containers can be planted. The record breakingly early start of the growth one cannot prevent of course and therefore the new growth is forced to face the possibility of late wintry weather. It is worth to remove the protective layers for the time of this wave of warm weather, so that the plants have the opportunity to grow properly without harm of weight and shadow. Only as wintry weather is threatening the suitable protections for the situation can be done again and then remove them immediately as the weather has warmed up again. However if the wintry weather will be severe, then frost damages of some plants cannot be prevented anymore as the growth is progressed far. One must observe though, that for example last year in May many plants got away from several frosty nights rather well with their frost damages as well despite the growth was being progressed very far. If the possible frosts will remain milder than -5 C after this wave of warm weather, then the situation isn't any different or peculiar as in normal springs. The calendar doesn't mean nothing at all to plants, because in their growth they follow at this stage slavisly only accumulating amount of warmth as there are allready enough light available. Only from the perspective of humans the time of this growth is "wrong" in the amount of a month. However i'll be waiting with some fear of that, how severe the possible cold period will form...

Yllä on kuvasarja kuvattuna viime torstaina 22.3. taimikasvatuspaikallani.

Kasvukauden alkaminen varmistuu siten torstaina.

Itse määritän kasvukauden alkamispäiväksi tuon viiden peräkkäisen päivän sarjan ensimmäisen päivän ko. varmistumisen jälkeen enkä vasta itse varmistumispäivää. Tämä on tärkeää, sillä monien kasvien kasvu alkaa aina jo ennen ko. varmistumispäivää. Näin kaikkien viiden päivän ajalta ennen varmistusta kertyneet lämpösummat tulevat otetuksi huomioon, jotta varhaisimmatkin kasvutilanteet ovat määriteltyjä lämpösumman mukaan. Tämän viikon aikana on odotettavissa raidan (Salix caprea) kukinnan alkua ja jopa tuomi (Prunus padus) saattaa avata silmunsa. Harmaaleppä (Alnus incana) ja tervaleppä (Alnus glutinosa) ovat jo kukkineet monta päivää täydellä voimalla. Nurmikot kasvavat jo paikoin ja sinivuokon (Hepatica nobilis) kukintaakin on jo nähty. Tiedossa on siis ennen näkemätöntä maaliskuun kasvua viikon edetessä! Eilen kävin kuvaamassa tätä kasvukauden alkua mm. Helsingin Meilahden arboretumissa.

Itse aloitan taimistohommat purkittamalla nuo toiseksi alimman kuvan taimet. Tällä viikolla tähdellistä on kuitenkin käydä ensin itse arboretumalueella Sipoossa, jossa teen aluksi normaaliin tapaan lannoitustöitä.

Lopullinen talven vaikutus ilmenee vasta kasvun edettyä muutaman viikon toukokuussa. Jännityksellä odotan mm. kentuckynkahvipuun (Gymnocladus dioicus) kasvun alkamista...

Above there is a photoseries as photographed last thursday in the 22nd of March at my nursery. This was the first time this year, that i went to see the situation over there since winter. The last time i visited the area was in December, when i brought those plants in the second lowest picture from the old nursery in Mäntsälä to this place for waiting them to put in containers.

So since this visit the spring has been progressed in an unusually warm weather and therefore ahead of schedule never seen before. Temperatures have been in inland areas of southern Finland during afternoon even near +15 C and at nights as well there have been only locally very minor frost despite a calm and clear weather. The afternoon temperatures are corresponding now even the normal temperatures of early May and the same continues up to the weekend. During friday and saturday there would be a little cooler, but then the very warm weather is propably returning and then the limit of +15 C could be topped at the latest. If it is topped allready during this week, then the all time record of warm temperature (measured in 1945) in March (in Finland) is in danger to be broken...

So there aren't end to be seen for peculiar weather conditions and it shows again well in nature. We know that the snowy winter remained only about 1,5 months long in southern Finland and now the temperatures of this week means, that the growing season can be starting in this week according to the definition; even a month ahead of normal schedule! According to the definition the growing season starts, when there have been at least five days in a row of daily mean temperatures over +5 C. In large parts of southern Finland that limit have been topped allready in three days in a row including this day. Therefore the start of the growing season is confirmed in thursday.

I define the starting day of the growing season to be the first day of that five day series after the confirmation of the growing season and not the confirmation day itself. This is important, because many plants start their growing always before the confirmation day in question. So the effective temperature sums accumulated during all five days before the confirmation will be included, so that even the earliest growing stages are defined according to the effective temperature sum. During this week there are expected even beginning blooming of Goat Willow (Salix caprea) and even Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) could open its puds as well. Grey Alder (Alnus incana) and Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa) have been blooming allready for several days in full force. Lawns are growing allready locally and there have been observed blooming of Common Hepatica (Hepatica nobilis) as well. So there are expected March growth never seen before as the week proceeds! Yesterday i went to photograph this beginned growing season for example in the arboretum of Meilahti in Helsinki. It remains to be seen, if there'll be severe setback during April and how is then defined the growing season started allready now. We are living peculiar times...

During that nursery visit in thursday i noticed, that the soil frost has been melted allmost completely allready then; i tested it with pushing metal sticks into the ground and they sank rather well. During this week the soil frost will melt away completely not counted for the most shadowy palces and therefore one can start planting allready; i wonder when one has had a change to plant into an unfrosen ground in March; propably never before...(in Finland). In any case one can plant container plants (trees, shrubs and perennials) allready from this week onwards and one musn't be alarmed by the time of the year, but one should take advantage of the peculiar chance in the way of last December. I myself will start the nursery tasks with the potting of those plants in the second lowest picture. However during this week it's important to visit first the actual arboretum area in Sipoo and there i will do firstly normal fertilizing tasks. I got more enthusiasm into my arboretum project also from the fact, that the ordered seeds arrived (check the lists below). I got all species, but only Red-twig Korean Maple (Acer barbinerve) wasn't obtainable. During next week i will sow the seeds not requiring pre treatments before sowing to pre grow them at my home indoors; i will return to the matter.

To the end i tell some observations, which i made during that visit to the nursery last thursday. Allmost all species had been overwintering very well despite the peculiar winter (at first record breakingly warm for a long time and then severe frost as well for a short time during February). At this stage one can check the situation of overwintering from scratching the shoot's bark and looking the revealed colour underneath; green means it's alive and brown means it's dead. According to this Fragrant Sumac above and sprouts of Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) in a planting box were killed allmost to the root, but for example Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) considered as sensitive in Finland was completely alive. Cornelian Cherry above was also overwintered well. Therefore the only harmfull damages were made by Field Vole (Microtus agrestis) to two species as they ate them completely. The species in question are showed above in the 2nd and 3rd upmost pictures. The ultimate influence of the winter will be showing only, when the growth have been progressing for couple of weeks during May. Amongst others i'll be waiting with exitement for Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) to start its growing... The sprouts of conifer trees were overwintered well too, but in the lowest picture we see the sprouts bended a bit and without harm under the snow. One doesn't have to be alarmed from the brown colour of Eastern Redcedar in the upmost picture, because i know from the last year these plants to have a surprisingly good capasity to recover back into green.

Kuvapäivitys myöhästyy - The photo updating is delaying

I announce now, that unfortunately due to practical reasons i have to move the updating of the blog trilogy photos to a later moment on my Flickr pages. Next time i'll put the pictures in question there during the next weekend. However tomorrow i will tell you here, how the spring advancing unusually much ahead of schedule have been started to affect into my arboretum project. That's all this time and now i'll go to enjoy of the warm and sunny day for example as photographing...

Säälinkin poisto - The removal of the weather link

During the mentioned tasks underneath i will remove Weatheronline pages weather map links from the blog trilogy and i won't use the maps of these pages anymore in the future. The reason for this is the fact, that these maps older than 1,5 years aren't no longer freely obtainable. Therefore the offering of these pages will change unpractical in these blogs of mine.

Blogitrilogian uusi vaihe - The new phase of the blog trilogy

Blogitrilogiani (Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth, Maisema - Landscape ja Taivaankansi - Firmament) päivittämisessä on tullut vastaan uusi vaihe, josta kerron nyt tässä.

Alunperin sain idean tähän blogitrilogiaan vasta viime elo - syyskuussa.

Flickr kuvasarjoissa.

Em. vaiheen jälkeen saavutetaan tilanne, jossa trilogiablogeihin tulevat kuvani ovat Flickr -sivuillani pelkästään ilman asiatietoja (lukuun ottamatta joitakin perustietoja) julkaistuina aina lähes nykyhetkeen asti. Blogitrilogia täydentää sitten kuvat n. puolen vuoden viiveellä kuviin liittyvillä asiatiedoilla, kuten tähänkin mennessä. Näin syntyy kaksi erilaista tasoa; tavallaan kuvat kaupataan kahteen kertaan ensin maistiaisina ja sitten analyysin kera syvällisesti. Aluksi Flickr -kuvat toimivat myös itsenäisinä taideteoksina ilman asiatiedon "rasitetta". Analyysivaiheen jälkeenkin Flickr -kuvasarjat toimivat kuukausien nopeina yleiskatsauksina analyysien ollessa syventävä ulottuvuus. Näin syntyvä jako on mielenkiintoinen siinäkin mielessä, kun puolen vuoden viive tavallaan luo näkymän vastaamaan eteläisen pallonpuoliskon vuodenaikoja; vuodenajathan ovat eri pallonpuoliskoilla käänteiset puolen vuoden mukaisesti.

Flickr sivujen täydentämisen aikana mainitsen tässä blogissa jokaisen kuukausikuvasarjan julkaisun. Tänään on vuorossa joulukuun 2005 kuvat; blogi 1, blogi 2 ja blogi 3. Toivotan mielenkiintoista aikaa odotellessa kuvasarjojen täydentymistä nykyhetkeen!

There have become a new phase in the updating of my blog trilogy (Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth, Maisema - Landscape ja Taivaankansi - Firmament), which i tell you about now in here. In the future as well this blog will act as a billboard in a way for my other blogs and matters.

I got the idea of this blog trilogy originally during only last August - September. Therefore i started to build the blogs into the net only in October. However i wanted to include the photo material gathered since previous December into the trilogy, so i started to update the blogs in a retrospective way. That old material was aimed originally for the weather observations in this blog, which is now removed. Therefore between December 2005 and August 2006 i created material on a different basis than this trilogy in my mind. Due to that the photo material have been variable in type and amount during that time scale. Now i have been updated the blog trilogy to the end of August 2006.

Then in last September i started to create material on a new basis the trilogy in my mind, which means more variable and profuse amounts of photos. Therefore i change now the means of the updating of this trilogy and i add a new dimension to the publishing of my photos associating with this. Due to the more profuse amount of photos i cannot update the time delay remained in the trilogy away anymore. Therefore there will always be at least a half year long time delay in the trilogy. I will aim to keep it about a half year long.

The new dimension associating with the publishing of the photos is the fact, where i have formed picture sets in my Flickr pages according to these three blogs. The picture sets will gather together all pictures of these blogs into monthly sets and therefore one can see every month easily at one glance. There will be links to these photos in every blog. I will publish these monthly sets from this day onwards about daily in a way, where at last the newest photo sets are entact with the present moment. After the catching up of the present moment i will then update the photo sets of an ongoing month every week or two weeks... During this catching up phase i will keep about a two weeks long pause from updating the blog trilogy, but i will do some language maintenance and correction tasks at the same time to old posts. I mention now, that i have added single new pictures between old posts. These corrections will be showing firstly in these Flickr photo sets.

After reaching the mentioned phase there will be a situation, where my photos coming into the blog trilogy are in my Flickr pages simply without factual information (not counted for some basic information) as published always allmost to the present time. The blog trilogy will then update the pictures in a half year delay with the factual information associating with the pictures, like it's been the case up to here as well. In this way there are formed two different levels; in a way the pictures are offered in two different times at first as tasters and then with a deep analysis. At first the pictures will also act on their own as works of art without a "burden" of a factual information. After the analysis phase as well Flickr photo sets will act as quick monthly surveys, where the analysis are the advanced dimension. The divide formed in this way is interesting also in that way, where the half year long delay creates in a way a vista to correspond seasons of the southern hemisphere; we know that seasons are the opposite according to the half year on different hemispheres.

During the update of my Flickr pages i will mention in this blog every publishing of the monthly photo sets. Today it's the turn of the December 2005 pictures; the blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3. I wish interesting time at waiting the the photo sets to be updated to the present moment!

Siementilauksia ja aikaista kevättä - Seed ordering and early spring

Alla on lista lajeista.

Arboretum Mustilalta tilasin seuraavat lajit: viitavaahtera (Acer barbinerve), sirovaahtera (Acer sieboldianum), huntuvaahtera (Acer triflorum), jumaltenpuu (Ailanthus altissima), keltatrumpettipuu (Catalpa ovata), isolehtikatsura (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), kanadannuppupuu (Cercis canadensis), partapensas (Chionanthus virginicus), kanukkalaji (Cornus florida), kanukkalaji (Cornus kousa var. chinensis), mustasaarni (Fraxinus nigra), kolmioka (Gleditsia triacanthos), maakkia (Maackia amurensis), kuriilienkirsikka (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis), viitaheisi (Viburnum cassinoides), hurtanheisi (Viburnum lantanoides), heisilaji (Viburnum macrocephalum), kirsikkaheisi (Viburnum prunifolium), (japanin)sinisade (Wisteria floribunda), sinisade (Wisteria sinensis) ja neidonhiuspuu (Ginkgo biloba).

Exotic Gardenilta tilasin seuraavat lajit: eteläntrumpettipuu / katalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), narrinpensas (Decaisnea fargesii), neidonhiuspuu (Ginkgo biloba), kentuckynkahvipuu (Gymnocladus dioica), kolmioka (Gleditsia triacanthos), loistomagnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana), keisaripuu (Paulownia tomentosa), hopealehmus (Tilia tomentosa), pagodipuu (Sophora japonica), valeakaasialaji (Robinia fertilis).

During last days the weather have been evolved into spring-like and that have brought enthusiasm again into my arboretum project. Therefore i became inspired to order seeds at the beginning of this week. Underneath there's a list of the species.

From Arboretum Mustila i ordered the following species: Ussuri Maple / Red-twig Korean Maple (Acer barbinerve), Siebold Maple (Acer sieboldianum), Three-flower Maple (Acer triflorum), Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), Chinese Catalpa (Catalpa ovata), Broad-leafed Katsuratree (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), White Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus), Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), Chinese Dogwood (Cornus kousa var. chinensis), Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra), Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis), Japanese Alpine Cherry (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis), Witherod (Viburnum cassinoides), Hobblebush / American Wayfaringtree (Viburnum lantanoides), Chinese Snowball (Viburnum macrocephalum), Blackhaw Viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium), Japanese Wisteria (Wisteria floribunda), Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) ja Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba).

From Exotic Garden i ordered the following species: Southern Catalpa / Indian Beantree (Catalpa bignonioides), Blue Bean Shrub (Decaisnea fargesii), Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba), Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioica), Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana), Empress Tree / Foxglove Tree (Paulownia tomentosa), Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa), Japanese Pagoda Tree (Sophora japonica), Bristly Locust (Robinia fertilis).

Many of these seeds require so much pre treatments before sowing, that i can't sow them this year; for example all Viburnum species. The supply of these seeds is also uncertain depending on storages of the places of purchase. I got allready a part of the species as seeds, but i raised further the seed amounts of the species in question for safety's sake. A part of those species are allready existing in my nursery place or in my arboretum, but those seeds are on stand-by due to possible damages of the ending winter... Last year i collected myself mainly just seeds from Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii), but i didn't put them on pre treatments in this time. Therefore the only species in my sowing program this spring are the bolded species above. This is the first time since more than 10 years, that there are so little amount of species in my sowing program. That is good, because there are so much other tasks in the arboretum project during this year. Next year i might increase again the amount of new species...

I haven't been checking the situations in my nursery or arboretum yet during this year, but in the space of two following weeks i'll do that at least with the firstly mentioned place. The checking is getting easier, because the snow fallen finally until February is melting fast away during this and the next week, as the weather have been turning again clearly warmer than usually. Also according to the definition the spring will start in southern Finland at the latest during the coming weekend, because then the daily mean temperature have allready been over 0 C for more than 5 days in a row. Next week the afternoon temperatures will be allready near +10 C. That'll happen even about three weeks earlier than usually. The beginning of the growing season cannot be talked about yet though, allthough for example the bloomings of Alders (Alnus sp.) and European Hazel (Corylus avellana) will start to develope foward from now on. In any case this year's March weather is now totally different than in the same time last year; then the weather continued severely wintry despite the sunny weather conditions. This year a so called real winter remained only about 1,5 months long...
