Toukokuun 2007 kasvikuvia ja erittäin kylmän sään pitkittyminen - Plant photos of May 2007 and prolonging of the very cold weather

Nyt aloitan toukokuun 2007 kasvivalokuvien julkaisun. Tuolloin kuun ensimmäisellä viikolla (18) kasvukausi oli tavanomaista tilannetta edellä 1 - 2 viikkoa, vaikka ko. hetkellä vallitsi kylmä sää.

Tässä vaiheessa mainitsen meneillään olevasta säästä. Se on ollut viikon alusta asti ajankohtaan nähden hyvin kylmä ja samanlaisena sää näyttää jatkuvan jopa pitkälle ensi viikkoon asti. Näin on muodostumassa erittäin pitkän ajan jälkeen ensimmäinen näin paljon tavanomaisesta kylmään suuntaan poikkeava sääjakso. Sitä ylläpitää tilanne, jossa matalapaineet ovat sijoittuneet Suomen etelä- ja itäpuolelle ja lännessä - luoteessa on korkeapaine; pitkään jatkuvia pohjois- ja koillistuulia.

Kasviviljelyn kannalta tilanne on ollut hyvin hankala, koska tavanomaista paljon pidemälle edennyt kasvukausi on mahdollistanut arkojen lajien altistumisen tämän vaiheen yöpakkasille. Tuhoja on jo tullut ympäri Etelä-Suomea etenkin sisämaassa, mutta en ole vielä käynyt katsomassa taimistollani tilannetta. Jatkossakin päivälämpötilat ovat korkeintaan pari astetta yli +10 asteen ja ajoittain kuurosateissa päivälämpötilat voivat tämän päivän tapaan pudota hetkeksi jopa alle +5 asteen; jopa Etelä-Suomessa on havaittu räntä- ja raekuuroja. Kolmen edellisen yön sijaan näyttää kuitenkin siltä, että jatkossa runsaampi pilvisyys hillitsisi halloja ja yöpakkasta ainakin ajoittain ja lisätuhojen mahdollisuus pienenisi. Joka tapauksessa kesän paluuta (terminen kesä on kuitenkin edelleen voimassa) joudutaan odottamaan ehkä pitkään...



Now I will start the publishing of the May 2007 plant photos. Then in the first week (18) of the month the growing season was 1 - 2 weeks ahead of an average situation, allthough there prevailed a cold weather at the moment in question.

At this phase I mention about the ongoing weather. It has been from the start of the week very cold considering the time of the year and the weather appears to be continuing the same even well into the next week. This way after a very long time there is forming the first weather period differing so much from an average condition towards the cold direction. It is maintained by the situation, where low pressures are situated in the southern and eastern sides of Finland and there is a high pressure in the west - northewest; long continuing northerly - northeasterly winds.

Regarding the plant cultivation the situation has been very difficult, because the growing season proceeded much ahead of an average situation have made sensitive species vulnerable to night frosts of this phase. There have already appeared damages around southern Finland especially in inland areas, but I haven't been at my nursery yet to check out the situation. During the coming days as well afternoon temperatures will be at the most couple of degrees above +10 C and occasionally in showers afternoon temperatures may drop even under +5 C for a moment in the way of today; even in southern Finland there have been appearing sleet- and haleshowers. However, as opposed to the last three nights it appears to be the case, that a more plentifull cloudiness would dissipate frosts at least occasionally and the possibility for additional damages would be decreasing. In any case we have to wait the return of the summer (however, the thermal summer is further entact) perhaps for a long time...

Kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvien julkaisu etenee nyt toukokuun 2006 viikkoon 20. Joukossa voi olla vielä muutama kuva, jotka ovat jo esiintyneet tässä blogissa tuona vuonna, mutta melkein kaikki kuvat ovat teille lukijoille täysin uusia. Tuolla viikolla kevään eteneminen viivästyi kylmän sään takia, mutta kasvukausi pysyi vielä melko hyvin normaalissa aikataulussa.

The publishing of my plant photography project's photos is now advancing to the week 20 of May 2006. There may be few photos among there, which have already appeared in this blog during that year, but almost all photos are completely new to you readers. During that week the advancing of spring delayed due to a cold weather, but the growing season stayed yet rather well in a normal schedule.

Kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvajulkaisussa on vuorossa toukokuun 2006 viikko 19. Tämä viikko sisältää vielä joitakin kuvia, jotka on julkaistu tässä blogissa tuona vuonna. Täysin uusien kuvien osuus on kuitenkin jo selvästi suurempi kuin edellisen viikon tapauksessa. Tuona keväänä kasvukausi oli melko lähellä tavanomaista etenemistahtiaan. Erikoisuutena kasvukauden vaiheessa oli muutaman päivän ero sisämaan (Hämeenlinna) ja etelärannikon (Helsinki) välillä; kasvukausi oli jäljessä etelärannikolla kylmän meren voimakkaan vaikutuksen takia.

It's the turn of the week 19 of May 2006 in my plant photography project's picture publishing. This week contains some photos, which have been published in this blog during that year. However, the portion of completely new photos is already clearly bigger than in the case of the previous week. During that spring the growing season was rather near an average proceeding pace. A special feature in the growing season's phase was the few day's worth of difference between the inland areas (Hämeenlinna) and the southern coast (Helsinki); the growing season was behind by the southern coast due to the strong influence of the cold sea.

Nyt on vuorossa kasvivalokuvausprojektini valokuvien julkaisu. Muutin jälleen hieman julkaisutapaa, koska tästä eteenpäin kuvien määrä per kuukausi on niin suuri. Havaitsin, että mielekkäintä on julkaista tästä eteenpäin kunkin kuukauden viikot yksi kerrallaan. Nyt on siis vuorossa toukokuun 2006 viikko 18. Seuraavana on viikko 19, 20 jne. kuukauden loppuun. Sitten jatkan vuoden 2007 toukokuusta ja edelleen vuoden 2006 kesäkuuhun jne., kuten on suunniteltu. Näin julkaisutahti tavallaan tihenee, vaikka kuukauden verran kuvia ilmestyy hitaammin. Muistutan vielä, että perennoihin palaan jossakin vaiheessa myöhemmin tänä vuonna. Tässä julkaisussa osa kuvista on jo esiintynyt tässä blogissa vuonna 2006, mutta jatkossa käytännössä mitään kuvaa ei ole aikaisemmin julkaistu missään (lukuunottamatta vuotta 2005).

Now it's the turn of a photo publish of my plant photography project. I changed again a bit the publishing method, because from here onwards the amount of the photos is so large per month. I noticed, that it is the most sensible thing to publish the weeks of every month one at the time. So, now it's the turn of the week 18 of May 2006. Following that is the week 19, the week 20 and so on to the end of the month. Then I will continue to May 2007 and further to June 2006 and so on, as it has been planned. This way the publishing cycle will become tighter, although a month's worth of photos will be published slower. I remind you yet, that I will return to the perennials at some point later during this year. In this publishing a part of the photos have already appeared in this blog in 2006, but in the future not a single photo haven't been published nowhere before in practice (not counted for the year 2005).

Tässä on uusin julkaistu kuukausi kasvivalokuvausprojektissani; toukokuu 2005. Melkein kaikki nämä kuvat esiintyivät jo tuona vuonna tässä blogissa. Silloin näistä kuvista lähti vähitellen kehittymään tämä projekti, jota pyrin jatkamaan edelleen tänä vuonna kuvaamalla aikaisempaa enemmän makrokuvia. Kuvien julkaisu etenee tässä vaiheessa vielä ainoastaan puuvartisiin lajeihin keskittyen ja seuraavana on vuorossa toukokuu 2006...

Here is the newest published month in my plant photography project; May 2005. Almost all these photos already appeared during that year in this blog. Then from these photos started cradually evolving this project, which I will aim to continue this year as photographing more than before macro photos. The publishing of the photos will proceed yet at this phase as concentrating only to woody plants and next time it will be the turn of May 2006...

Olen taas julkaissut kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvia Flickr -sivuillani. Tällä kertaa on vuorossa huhtikuu 2007. Tein julkaisutapaan muutoksen; julkaisen jatkossa kuukausiin sisältyvät perennakuvat myöhemmin toisessa vaiheessa ja nyt keskityn ensin vain puihin, pensaisiin ja köynnöksiin. Syinä tähän ovat aikatauluttamisen, kuvien läpikäymisen ja niiden nimeämisen ongelmat. Palaan perennakuviin jossain vaiheessa...

I have published again photos of my plant photography project on my Flickr pages. This time it's the turn of April 2007. I made a change to the publishing method; in the future I will publish the perennial photos included in the months later in a second phase and now I will concentrate at first only to trees, shrubs and climbers. Reasons for this are problems in making schedules, getting through the photos and naming them. I will return to the perennial photos at some point...

Kävin eilen pikaisesti taimistollani kahdesta syystä. Ensinnäkin tarkastamaan viime viikon yöpakkasten aiheuttamat tuhot ja toisekseen aloittamaan vihdoinkin taimien siirron arboretumalueelleni ensi kevään istutuksia varten. Tässä vaiheessa se tarkoitti n. 15 tuomiristeymän (Prunus padus X virginiana) lastaamista autooni ja myöhemmin tällä viikolla vien ne arboretumiin. Näin myöhään syksyllä kasveja voi varastoida auton sisällä, koska auringosta ei ole paahdevaaraa.

Yllä oleva kuvasarja näyttää esimerkkejä viime viikon kahden pakkasyön (lämpötilat n. -2 ja -4 asteen välillä) aiheuttamista vaurioista näiden lajien lehtiin. Nämä ovat niitä pakkasenarimpia. Kuten havaitaan, niin tyypilliset vauriot ovat keskenkasvuisten osien veltostuminen, lehtiin muodostuvat tummat - vaaleat laikut, vihreän värin tasainen tummuminen harmaaseen - ruskeaan suuntaan, vauriokohtien kuivuminen kurttuun ja lehtien variseminen kesken ruskaantumisenkin eli vihreinä. Kukin laji muodostaa oman tapansa reagoida. Osa lajeista varisti jopa kaikki lehtensä.

Tällä viikolla sää jatkuu leutona ja kosteana ajoittaisine sateineen keskiviikkoon asti, jolloin lämpötilat ovat Etelä-Suomessa enimmäkseen +10 asteen vaiheilla. Sään vähän seljetessä lämpötila voi laskea yöllä +5 asteen tienoille ja toisaalta etelärannikolla voi olla ajoittain yli +10 astetta. Torstain - lauantain tienoilla on jälleen kylmän luoteis - pohjoistuulen aika. Silloin sää on suunnilleen yhtä kylmää kuin viime viikon kylmän jakson aikana; päivisin n. +5 ja yöllä etenkin sisämaassa heikkoa pakkasta. Samalla voi tulla vähän lumikuuroja, mutta kunnollista lumipeitettä ei olisi tiedossa. Tämäkin kylmä näyttää jäävän tilapäiseksi, kun viikonlopun aikana leudot ja kosteat länsi - lounaistuulet valtaavat alan pohjoisen Atlantin voimakkaan matalapainetoiminnan takia.

Ruska etenee tällä viikolla sisämaassa monin paikoin loppuun, mutta sielläkin on viljellyissä lajeissa jäljellä jopa lähes kesäasuisia puita ja pensaita. Etelärannikolla (siellä etenkin urbaaneilla alueilla) ruska on nyt ikään kuin toisessa huippuvaiheessa, kun esim. monet luontaisista koivuista (Betula sp.) ovat etenemässä tuon kylmän jälkeen ruskansa huippuun; kylmä vaihe toimi taas aktivoijana (liian kylmässä ruska ei etene) ja tämä leutous toimii nopean ruskakehityksen ylläpitäjänä. Jotkut lajit eivät kuitenkaan ehdi aloittaa ruskaa ennen tuota seuraavaa kylmää ja edelliset pakkaset tuhosivat joidenkin lajien lehdet jo vihreinä etenkin sisämaassa.



I visited quickly my nursery yesterday for two reasons. Firstly to check out the damages made by the last week's two frosty nights and secondly to finally start removing plants to my arboretum area for the next spring's plantings. At this phase it meant loading about 15 specimens of a Bird Cherry hybrid (Prunus padus X virginiana) into my car and I will transport them to the arboretum later this week. So late in the autumn one can store plants in a car, because there isn't a fear of the sun's scorching.

The photo series above is showing examples of the damages made onto the leaves of these species by the last week's two frosty nights (temperatures about -2 C to -4 C) . These are the most frost sensitive. As we can observe, the typical damages are slacking of the unfinished growing parts, dark - light spots formed onto the leaves, an even darkening of the green colour into a gray - brown direction, drying of the damaged areas into a crispy stage and shedding of the leaves even in the middle of a fall colour formation. In other words as green. Every species will create its own way to react. Some species dropped even all their leaves.

During this week the weather will continue mild and humid with occasional rain up to wednesday, where temperatures are around +10 C in southern Finland. As the weather is clearing a bit, then the temperature can drop around +5 C at night and on the other hand there may be occasionally over +10 C by the southern coast. Around thursday - saturday it will be time again for a cold northwesterly - northerly wind. Then the weather will be approximately as cold as during the last week's cold period; during afternoons about +5 C and at nights especially in inland areas weak frosts. At the same time there can come a bit of snowshowers, but there wouldn't be a proper snowcover in the forecast. This cold as well seems to be remaining temporary, as mild and humid westerly - southwesterly winds will be invading the area due to a strong low pressure activity over northern Atlantic Ocean.

Fall colours will be advancing to the end in many places in inland areas, but there as well there is remaining allmost green trees and shrubs among the cultivated species. By the southern coast (especially at urban areas in there) fall colours are in a way at the second peacking phase, as for example many of the native birches (Betula sp.) are proceeding into their fall colour peak after that cold; the cold period acted again as an activator (during too cold weather fall colours don't evolve) and this mildness is acting as a sustainer of a fast fall colour development. However some species will not have time to start fall colours before that following cold and the previous frosts destroyed leaves of some species allready as green especially in inland areas.

Kasvivalokuvausprojektiani tehdessä silloin tällöin törmään ällistyttävän virheellisiin ja asiantuntemattomiin kasvinhoitotapoihin. Tänään törmäsin taas sellaiseen, kun kuljin Espoon Pohjois-Tapiolassa tuon yllä olevassa kuvaparissa näkyvän paikan ohi. Eilen kuvasin ko. syyshortensioita ja mitäpä tänään näin; joku idiootti oli katkaissut liian aikaisin nuo kukkatertut. Tulin heti hyvin surulliseksi, sillä paikkahan on sentään PUUTARHAKAUPUNGINOSASSA! Joku valitettavasti päätti osoittaa huonoa makua ja tyylitajun puutetta, joita ei pitäisi esiintyä etenkään näissä maisemissa. Ei näin!

Tätä pensasta voi toki hoitaa näin (n. 2 / 3 uudesta kasvusta pois), jos haluaa seuraavan kasvukauden kukinnoista isoja. Kasvin voinnin kannalta tällä väärällä leikkausajankohdalla ei myöskään ole vaikutusta tässä vaiheessa. Asian pointteina ovat estetiikantaju ja puutarhataiteelliset seikat, jotka tulee huomioida valitsemalla oikea leikkausajankohta; joskus talvella, kun tertut ovat hajoamassa tai sitten keväällä ennen uutta kasvua, sillä terttujen hajottua jäävät vain oksat pystyyn siististi. Syyshortensioiden kukinnot toimivat lehtien varistua ns. talventörröttäjinä, jotka ovat koristeellisia pitkälle talveen esim. keräten lunta ja kuuraa päälleen. Alimmassa kuvassa tertut eivät olleet edes muuttuneet juuri ollenkaan ruskeiksi, vaan niiden koristearvo oli selvästi vielä "kukintaa" (ne oikeat pienet kukat kukkivat tertuissa elokuussa) osoittava. Terttujen leikkaaja ei ymmärtänyt kumpaakaan seikkaa.

Tähänkin liittyy ilmastonmuutos. Syksyjen ollessa sen takia yhä enemmän ja pidempään pakkasettomia, syyshortensioiden kukinnot säilyvät tämän vuoden tapaan jopa pitkälle lokakuuhun "kukintavaiheisina" eivätkä ne siten ole edes kunnolla ruskeita. Sen takia joku "perinteinen" leikkausajankohta ei päde edes siinäkään mielessä. Tämä syksy osoittaa sen selvästi. Tämän viikon kylmä sää ei ole myöskään syy olettaa noiden terttujen muuttuvan pakkaspureman ruskeksi pian, sillä voi olla että yöpakkaset jäävät näin lähellä etelärannikkoa vielä hyvin lieviksi ja sitten seuraa pitkä leuto jakso ilman pakkasen vaaraa...

Valitettavasti Suomessa on tällaista taidottomuutta ja ymmärtämättömyyttä kasvien estetiikkaa kohtaan. Sen opettelussa ja harjoittamisessa ei pidä kuitenkaan kopioida ulkomaiden (tunnetut puutarhamaat) menetelmiä sokeasti. Vaikka niissä voi olla paljon hyvää opittavaa, niin niidenkin joukossa voi olla "vääriä siemeniä". Sen sijaan tulevaisuuden muuttuvissa olosuhteissa kasviestetiikankin opettelu lähtee paikallisista olosuhteista ja etenkin oikeanlaisista tiedoista eli kasvien tuntemisesta ja siihen päälle mielikuvituksen käytöstä. Muuten, seinällä on imukärhivilliviini (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).



When doing my plant photography project, I every now and then face amazingly incorrect and unexpert methods of plant care. Today I faced that kind of thing again, as I walked by that place appearing in the upper pair of photos at the district of Pohjois-Tapiola in Espoo. Yesterday I photographed the Panicle Hydrangeas in question and what did I saw today; some idiot had cut away those panicles too soon. I turned immediately very sad, because the place do is in THE GARDEN CITY REGION! Unfortunatelly somebody decided to show bad taste and a lack of style, which shouldn't be appeared especially in these landscapes. Not in this way!

This shrub can surely be taken care of in this way (about 2 / 3 away from the new growth), if one wants the following growing season's flowerheads to be large. At this phase this wrong cutting time doesn't have an effect to the well being of the plant either. The points in the matter are a sense of esthetics and garden art related matters, which must be payed regard to as choosing the right cutting time; sometime in winter, when the panicles are breaking down or then in spring before the new growth, because as the panicles have been broken down the shoots will remain stouting neatly. After the leafshed the panicles of Panicle Hydrangea act as so called winter stouters - a finnish term :) - which are ornamental a long way into winter picking up snow and frost onto themselves. In the lowest photo the panicles weren't even turned hardly at all brown, but their ornamental value was yet clearly pointing out "flowering" (the actual tiny flowers bloom in the panicles in August). The cutter of the panicles didn't understand both of the matters.

The climate change is related into this as well. As autumns will be more often and for longer periods of time frostless, the panicles of Panicle Hydrangea will remain in the way of this year even well into October as in "flowering stage" and they aren't therefore even properly brown. That is why some "traditional" cutting time doesn't apply even in that sense either. This autumn points that out clearly. The cold weather of this week isn't a reason either to expect those panicles to turn frost bitingly brown soon, because it may be the case that night frosts will remain yet as very minor so near the southern coast and then will follow a long mild period without a risk of frost...

Unfortunately there are these kinds of unskilled ways and lack of judgement towards plant esthetics in Finland. However when learning and practising that, one mustn't copy foreign (the well known garden countries) methods blindly. Allthough they may include a lot of good things to learn, there can be "false seeds" among them as well. As opposed to that in the changing circumstances of the future the learning of the plant esthetics sets out from the local circumstances and especially from right kinds of information in other words from knowing the plants and on the top of that from using one's imagination. By the way, there is Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) on the wall.
