Yesterday I visited my nursery to check situations for the the case, that which plants I will start to remove to my arboretum to wait for the plantings of the next spring. At the same time I photographed the upper photo series about the best fall colour situations up to the present moment at the place in question. As compared to the previous photo series the fall colours are peaking on some species, but due to the warm period fall colours have been emerging slowly on many species and there are yet further species with a complete summer foliage as well. I will take photos of them in October, because in the light of weather forecasts it is possible, that even the most sensitive ones of them will go amazingly through into such a late "autumn" without frost bites at all in such a frost sensitive locality. In any case this is the first time in my plant cultivation career, that all of my plants have been safed practically from all mentionable frost damages for the whole September.

I placed that "autumn" in quotes, because during this "autumn" as well in the way of the two previous ones the waves of warm air are keeping summer yet alive according to the thermal definition; the daily average temperatures are over +10 C. Though, they had time to be under that limit for several days at the beginning of September, which is affecting to the definition... In any case these kinds of definitions are causing also during this year peculiar and difficult situations to identify seasons in a sharp and scientific way. I want to bring out this dimension again clearly, because allready now and especially in the future these definitions are revealing in a unbribable and furthermore clearer way the proceeding of the climate change. Allready now as well it is confusing to wonder about the fact, that even at the beginning of October it would be summer! This might lead during future decades to the fact, that these definitions will be forced to be changed. In that way it wouldn't be peculiar to call for example October as a summer month :)...

Ensimmäiset luokkatunnisteet valmiita - The first tags are ready

During yesterday evening I finished the tags of the bilingual posts of this blog and in the future every new post will get tags. The next phase is to start translating the oldest posts into english and add tags to them at the same time. I will make tags to the blog trilogy blogs only after that. There might yet come changes to the tags later on. On some posts I was forced to narrow down the amount of tags, because they cannot be added too much. This happened in the cases of the posts listing a lot of plant species and I was forced to leave the plant genus tags in question away according to a suitable method.

Siemeniä ja arboretumasiaa Puun päivänä - Seeds and arboretum matters at The Day Of The Trees

Tänään vietetään Suomessa ns. Puun päivää. Sen kunniaksi päätin tilata Arboretum Mustilalta puiden siemeniä. Tuossa alla on lista tilatuista lajeista vain tieteellisinä niminä ja ilman linkkejä (linkitetty lista ilmestyy siementen saavuttua):

(Acer mandschuricum), (Acer triflorum), (Ailanthus altissima), (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), (Cladrastis kentukea), (Cornus florida), (Cornus kousa var. chinensis), (Fagus sylvatica), (Fraxinus nigra), (Platanus acerifolia), (Platanus occidentalis), (Quercus rubra) ja (Rhus typhina).

Samalla jotkut lajit on käsiteltävä hirvien (Alces alces) karkoteaineella. Ryhdyn siirtoihin ehkä jo sunnuntaina ja ehkä ehdin tehdä jonkin verran istuttamista vielä tänä syksynä... Tämän helpottavan idean myötä uskalsin tilata nuo siemenet lisävaivaksi. Viime kevään alussa tilaamiani siemeniä on myös jo odottamassa esikäsittelyjään. Kerron ensi viikolla lisää näistä puuhista...

Today there is a so called Day Of The Trees in Finland. To celebrate that, I decided to order tree seeds from Arboretum Mustila. Underneath there is a list of the ordered species only as scientific names and without links (the list with links will appear as the seeds have arrived):

(Acer mandschuricum), (Acer triflorum), (Ailanthus altissima), (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), (Cladrastis kentukea), (Cornus florida), (Cornus kousa var. chinensis), (Fagus sylvatica), (Fraxinus nigra), (Platanus acerifolia), (Platanus occidentalis), (Quercus rubra) and (Rhus typhina)

I tell here at the same time new things about my arboretum project. Planting tasks have been in standstill for the whole year due to a motivation problem and other hurries. A one reason to the weakened motivation has been distances between my home, my nursery and my arboretum; about half an hour's worth of driving between each distance. They have been acting as some kinds of psychological barriers. Now I'll make the matter easier by removing plants from the nursery to the arboretum area ready for the plantings of the next spring. Then I don't have to spend time and efforts to the removing tasks during the planting days.

However there have allready been container plants waiting for a planting since the autumn of 2005, but most of them have been killed due to a lack of care and some of them got even stolen last year. Now first of all I will move the plants closer to the aimed planting areas and secondly to hide them more from thieves. At the same time some species must be treated with a pesticide to prevent mooses (Alces alces). I will undertake the removing tasks perhaps in sunday allready and perhaps I will have time yet to make some plantings during this autumn... Due to this releafing idea I got the courage to order those seeds for them to be an extra burden. Seeds I ordered at the beginning of the last spring are also waiting for their pretreatments allready. I'll tell more about these tasks next week...

Välttämätöntä ilmastonmuutos- ja kasvatuskritiikkiä - Necessary climate change and cultivation criticism

Aivan liian aikaisin kukista tyhjennetty astia kuvattuna eilen Espoon Tapiolassa - A container emptied way too early from flowers as photographed yesterday at the district of Tapiola in Espoo.

Helsingin Esplanadinpuiston kukkaloistoa tänään - A flower display of Helsinki's Esplanadi park today.
.
.
Vastaavia tapauksia on varmasti paljon ympäri eteläistä Suomea. Niinpä täytyy suuresti kritisoida tällaista kauneuden ennenaikaista poistamista. Lämpöaalto mahdollistaisi tällaistenkin kasvien kasvattamisen vielä pitkään. Esimerkillisesti tässä asiassa on toiminut Helsingin kaupungin Rakennusvirasto, joka hoitaa edelleen alemmassa kuvassa nähtäviä Esplanadin puiston kesäkukkia (kuva on otettu tänään ja siinä on hopeavillakkoa (Senecio cineraria), ahkeraliisaa ja härmesalviaa (Salvia farinacea) ), vaikka kalenterin mukaan syyskuu on pian vaihtumassa lokakuuksi.
.
.
Olosuhteissa, joita on voitava ennakoida jo tänään.
.
.
Päivitys 27.9.2007 klo. 13.10.: Lisäsin tuon Puistolan säätilastolinkin yhteyteen Ilmatieteenlaitoksen tilastosivun, jossa Suomen tavanomaisten lämpötilojen hahmottamista helpottavat muutamat pitkän ajan tilastot (Helsingin Kaisaniemen kuukausitilastot). Näin voitte havaita, kuinka lämmintä viime vuosina on jo ollut. Siitä osasyy kuuluu siis ilmastonmuutokselle.

Yesterday temperatures were near +20 C in many places in southern Finland during the afternoon. So it was the warmest day of the week, but forecast maps are showing only a small and temporary cooling during wednesday - friday and from the weekend onwards a same kind of summery weather will continue. At that time there seems to be strengthening a huge high pressure in the northeastern - eastern side of Finland, which would circulate very warm air from the southeast into Finland even for a long way into the following week; it remains to be seen, whether the all time records of October's high temperatures are in danger to be broken then... Regarding the plant cultivation the frostless (the cooling of wednesday - friday doesn't have a significant effect to the night temperatures as helped by clouds and winds) and partly because of that the best possible growing circumstances (considering the time of the year) will continue firmly yet for a long time.
.
This wave of warm air has given me again a reason for bringing up matters concerning the climate change and a cultivation of plants and especially in the way, that there must be added criticism into those matters once again. There are two matters of criticism as there was in the early part of the year as well; moving from the cultivation season to the other in a bad way not taking account a warm period and wondering of the scepticism relating to the climate change and human kind's major part's inefficiency, indifference and incapability to act according to the way the climate change requires.
.
Let's take firstly an example of that inflexible way to cultivate plants and spice it up with a good example. This as well is relating for its own part to changes the climate change will bring. At the yards of my home's apartment buildings the seasonal summer flowers have allready been taken away from their containers, as it is seen in the topmost photo. The plants in question were for example Busy Lizzies (Impatiens walleriana), which had yet plenty of flowers and there wasn't frost bites at all. Surely there are similar cases a lot around southern Finland. Therefore this kind of premature removing of beauty must be criticized a lot. The wave of warm air would make possible the cultivation of these kinds of plants as well yet for a long period of time in many places. A good example in the matter here is showing Helsinki city's Construction office, who are further taking care of the Esplanadi park's seasonal flowers (the photo is taken today and there is Silver Ragworts (Senecio cineraria), Busy Lizzies and Mealy Cup Sages (Salvia farinacea) ) seen in the lower photo, despite September is being turned soon into October according to the calendar.
.
As opposed to that in the firstly mentioned case Tapiolan Lämpö company (who are taking care of the yards in question) is following a tradition, which is telling that seasonal flowers must be taken away before the end of September (as they have supposedly become bad or an other bad excuse in this situatíon). This is an example of that inflexibility, which mustn't be practised in the front of the changes the climate change will bring. If there is warmth enough and there haven't been frost, so isn't it better to proceed according to the weather and not to hurry unnecessarily in autumn or like in the last spring; one must hurry with some matters much more than normally, because the growing season has started allready a long time ago. The adaptation to the climate change must mean giving up of old traditional means for the use of new more suitable means in the cases clearly needing it and these kinds of warm periods must be taken as an exercise for that allready at this phase. Unfortunately Finland is further way too unimaginative, stiffen into its patterns, depended on money's power and slow country as its park and garden culture is concerned, so therefore it takes a lot to change matters.
.
Regarding the climate change I have been reading recently for example these (unfortunately not in english) opinions in the Iltasanomat paper's opinion column questioning, wheter the climate change is true or not and is it caused by humans. From those opinions as well there shines unfortunately far and brightly ignorance, indifference and even a plain stupidity. Fortunately there are a few well aquainted and smart persons, who are at least a bit aware of the case's situation; the climate change as caused by humans for the most part is allready under way and the first signs associating with that are allready present to be seen; for example unheard warm periods, where records of high temperatures in the known history are broken three times (in Finland) in less than a year (even the fourth may come soon in October). Do remember cases of the last few years as well in a wider scale for example around Europe; the ended summer's record hot heatwave in the southeast, the record mild conditions of the last autumn and winter in a wide area, the record hot heatwave in 2003 and so on. It surely looks like the climate change is felt on one's skin allready in the light of statistics and observations as well.
.
Here (long term average values in Finland) are the weather charts of the Puistola district in Helsinki from the year 2003 onwards, from which there is observed a situation of the present time (though, one must remember, that the climate change is a relatively slow process in one human life's scale, but a VERY fast one in the scale of the earth's history). There have been periods colder than the average, but periods warmer than the average have appeared much more especially during recent two or three years; for example repeated warm periods in the autumns have been significant. I won't be amazed, if the same continues also during the following couple of years and from there onwards occasionally evermore clearly; cold every now and then, but in an amazing way frequently and strongly very warm and new records as well... On the other hand I won't be wondering either of the fact, if there will be a so called pause in the warming process between there for a couple of years. On an average the next 100 years will be the time of an all the time warming world in any case for sure.
.
In other blogs there have been reasonable argumentation regarding the matter for example in the blogs Jarin blogi - biologiaa ja maantiedettä and Tiedemies (unfortunately only in finnish). As opposed to them here is a site with a sceptical view towards the climate change. I am here having an opinion, that one mustn't be reacting in a hysterical way to the climate change, but one must take it with determination and imagination. As opposed to that the scepticism and indifference appearing for example on that GreenFree Finland site towards the climate change must be avoided with care and resolution (though, after one has firstly read the worst wrong information from there; for example pseudonyms tuc and Tommi B are guiding thankfully to the streams of right information on the site's conversation forums; unfortunately only in finnish, but similar debates are on the way around the world.
.
I point out again, that taking up a right attitude towards the climate change isn't anymore solely just the matter of preventing the phenomenon in question, but adapting to that is important as well. It is clear allready now, that the climate change will proceed more or less despite prevention efforts. Partly for their own part the climate change sceptics and other indifferent people are causing the prevention efforts to become more difficult, because it is their fault that we cannot take united efforts widely enough, the goals cannot be made clear enough and action cannot be made efficient enough towards the goals in question. It is important as well to notice other environmental problems; pollution, overpopulation and so on.
.
I wrote about this adapting to the change allready last winter, but here is again a view of this enviromental planner / designer and creative soul; all planning and building, which doesn't allready from now on take into account matters and alternatives the climate will bring, is the wrong kind of planning and building. All city spaces, parks, plantings, buildings, bridges, roads and so on, which are being planned / designed and build today - in the near future, are existing even 100 years from now, but propably very much in new kinds of circumstances (for example risks and challenges caused by floods, drought, wind damages, peculiar temperatures, diseases and changes in the human mind). In the circumstances, which must be able to be foreseen allready today.
.
These circumstances must be able to be handled also as possibilities (seeing positive development lines, new innovative and broadening solutions, taking advantage in a good will of good alternatives brought by the change and so on), which are helping the adaptation to the change. Important then is also the fact, that one has imagination and an ability to be flexible both within persons and within a whole culture and between cultures. In this kind of change we need of course well aquainted, whole hearted and strong souls for important tasks, but unfortunately in the present culture of ours there is a great lack of them and instead of that we have to suffer further too much from narrow minded and one eyed scepticism, inconsiderate littering / destroying, indifferent, greedy, ignorant and twisted egoists and partly due to that many kinds of cowardice and incapability to face the problem / challenge in question in the best possible way... That do has occasionally a capability to depress and paralyse me as well, but the positively challenging character of the journey ahead is further clearly in my mind :)

Update at the 27th of September 2007 at 1.10 PM: I added to the side of that Puistola weather chart link a statistical page of Finnish Meteorological Institute, where there are some long term statistics (the monthly charts of Helsinki Kaisaniemi) to help identify usual temperatures of Finland. In this way you can observe, how warm there have allready been during recent years. So the partial reason for that is the climate change.

Myrskyn jälkeen kesäistä kasvatussäätä - After a storm a summery cultivation weather

Huomenna on jälleen voimakkaan matalapaineen aika. Ilmatieteenlaitos on antanut asiasta tiedotteen sivullaan.

Tomorrow it is time again for a strong low pressure. Finnish Meteorological Institute has given an announcement on its pages (unfortunately not in english) associating with it. The low pressure arriving from the southwest will cause the winds to pick up possibly even to damaging forces in southern and eastern Finland during the day. The rains coming along are locally heavy during the night - early part of the day and there is some risk for thunder as well. The air mass is unseasonally warm; temperatures are night and day over +10 C (at daytime near +15 C).

Yesterday there was also thunder locally in southern Finland. There was ground frost as well at the same day's night, but only in the eastern parts of southern Finland's inland areas, where there was enough clear and calm between two precipitation areas. The capital city area and my plant cultivation areas were safed from the ground frost as I suspected earlier. Splendid!

In the future as well there will be no need for fearing a ground frost, because the air mass will get warmer during the weekend and early part of the week. At the same time the weather will get rainless, as a high pressure settles in the souteastern - eastern side of Finland; afternoon temperatures may get over +15 C clearly. In this way there seems to be starting a so called indian summer, as I suspected earlier. During the starting week the high pressure seems to invade southern Finland perhaps even for a long time from the latter part of the week onwards. It remains to be seen, what kinds the air masses will then appear. As the weather will calm down in any case, a risk for fogs and stratus clouds will get higher, if the air mass will remain humid. This may be the case, if the warm middle latitude air mass will remain over southern Finland after the week's start. If the air mass will dry up (and the weather will be clear also at nights), then a risk for ground frost will get higher in inland areas due to even a slight cool down of the air mass.

However now it seems that way, that the plants are getting a fine preparation time for the winter. The warmth will cause the unfinished growth to accelerate its speed and the frostless conditions will keep the species safed from the frost bites to live and bloom further. This will be the case for example with many seasonal summer flowers, with the reddish flower recemes of Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata "Grandiflora") and with the sensitive species of my arboretum project. So, after the saturday's storm it's worth to tidy up and take care of the summer's seasonal flowers, which have been harmed by the recent rains and winds and not to think removing of them yet. The warm period will propably influence to the fall colours as slowing down their appearing and that is also helped by the influence of the heavy rains; moisture of the soil and flushed nutrients.

Rankkoja sateita on tulossa - Heavy rains are coming

Here's an additional information about the rain situation during the nearest 24 hours. Finnish Meteorological Institute has given an announcement (unfortunately not in english) on its internet pages, which tells us that during the time in question there may rain locally even 50 to 70 millimetres in southern and southeastern Finland! This would cause a risk for floods on low grounds near water areas (especially rivers and streams) during tomorrow. City floods can also be possible. Clearly it will be the case as well, that in some localitys plants are getting too much water; for example low clay grounds. At this moment the rains have allready started and they can be observed from the links I gave you.

Update at the 19th of September 2007 at 12.30 PM; Now the Finnish Meteorological Institute has given information about the observed rainfall amounts (unfortunately not in english, but the link includes a readible chart). The biggest amounts of precipitation have concentrated to the eastern Finland. This time the capital city area (Helsinki) and all of my plant cultivation areas remained in the western side of the heaviest rainfall. At the moment there rains yet heavily in the easternmost corner of Finland.

Valkomulperi - White Mulberry (Morus alba)

Yleisesti eteläisen Suomen alueella varsinainen ruska on edennyt ensimmäiseen kirkkaaseen vaiheeseen. Tällä viikolla huipentuvat monien lajien ensimmäisenä kehittyvät punaiset värit. Näitä esiintyy mm. metsävaahteralla (Acer platanoides), kotipihlajalla (Sorbus aucuparia) ja tuomella (Prunus padus). Ulkomaisista lajeista punasaarni (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) on samalla kertaa ruskansa huipussa.

Viime viikon maanantaina kertomani koivujen (Betula sp.) ennenaikainen sienitautiruska on kehittynyt edelleen voimakkaasti mm. Helsingin ja Hämeenlinnan välillä. Melko suuri osa koivuista on jo jopa lähes tyhjiä, mutta erikoisella tavalla nuorten puiden suhteen; voimakkaat latvaversot ovat säilyttäneet lehtensä vihreinä, joten puut ovat vihreätupsulatvaisia. Runsaasti koivua kasvavilla märillä alueilla ruska on siis jo poikkeuksellisesti lähes ohi.

Here is the second matter associating with the photos taken at my nursery last sunday; fall colours. At my nursery these plants had been formed fall colours the most. In the photos I showed you in sunday, the fall colours were at the beginning on Regel's Threewingnut (Tripterygium regelii), Katsuratree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) and Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioica). Here it must be notified, that these actual fall colours are a different matter than frost bitten frost damage fall colours. In the sunday's photo series both of these fall colour types apperead simultaniously on the top of each other lightly on Regel's Threewingnut. In this photo series we observe the fact, that even these plants (White Mulberry, European Smoketree, A Grape, Amur Corktree and Manchurian Walnut) with their more or less sensitive leaves didn't suffer any frost damages.

Commonly in southern Finland fall colours have been proceeded into the first bright phase. During this week there are peaking the firstly forming red colours of many species. These colours are appearing for example on Norway Maple (Acer platanoides), Rowan / European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) and Bird Cherry (Prunus padus). Among the foreign species Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) is simultaniously at the peak of its fall colours. As compared to the last year this phase appears now much earlier. It looks like fall colours would form allmost according to an average schedule in the coming weeks, but a warming up rainy weather might influence to the matter...

The premature fungus disease fall colours of the birches (Betula sp.) I told you about in last week's monday have been evolving further strongly between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna amonst others. A rather large part of the birches are allready even almost empty, but in a peculiar way regarding the young trees; leaves of strong top shoots have been remained green, so therefore the trees appear with green top tufts. So in the wet areas with lots of growing birches, the fall colour period is unusually allmost over allready. A same kind of fungus disease have been appearing also on foreign Poplar / Cottonwood species (Populus sp.) and on Goat Willow (Salix caprea). Among poplars especially cultivar (Populus "Rasumowskiana") and Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera) are allmost naked due to this in many localitys.

In the future the strengthening of the greenhouse effect may create circumstances more favourable for these kinds of fungus diseases living on the surfaces of the leaves and for the premature leaf shedding. This autumn seems to be one that kind of a strong example in that regard. Warm and humid summer air masses as affected for a long time will create grounds for this for their own part and the climate change may bring these kinds of air masses in the future stronger and in more frequent years. Therefore at some areas condition of the birches may get worse cradually during a course of decades. Especially so, if drought periods will alternate with humid and warm periods.

At the end of this week there seems to be coming further relatively warm air, but the weather will remain unstable and occasionally even very windy. Afternoon temperatures may reach over +15 C and night temperatures will rise even above +10 C. According to this the summer returns considering the temperatures; daily average temperatures above +10 C. During this evening and tomorrow there will rain locally even very profusely in southern Finland, so therefore even the last autumn fertilizer grains will dissolve well for the use of the plants on the last moment. However at this phase the giving of autumn fertilizers is way too late especially for the plants allready with fall colours.

Linkkikokoelmat täydentyvät edelleen - The link collections are being added further

Tänään innostuin vielä täydentämään kaikkien blogieni linkkikokoelmia. Samalla säädin ne kaikkien blogien kesken melkein samanlaisiksi. Tässä on pienet esittelyt kustakin uutena lisätystä linkistä;

Suomen Merentutkimuslaitoksen jäätilanne; Tällä sivulla on havainnolliset kuvat jäätilanteesta kaikilla Suomeen rajoittuvilla merialueilla. Jäätilannesivua päivitetään ainoastaan talviaikana. Siksi sivulle on jäänyt tällä hetkellä päälle edellisen jääkauden viimeinen tilannekuva viime keväältä.

Sivustolta pääsee tutkimaan koko maapallon eri kohteiden vastaavat tiedot.

Kuvapuisto; Suomalainen valokuvablogi, jossa on erityisesti luontoaiheisia valokuvia. Erittäin hieno!

4Seasons In Southern Finland; Tässä on myös luontoaiheinen valokuvablogi.

Today I agitated yet to add my link collections in all of my blogs. At the same time I adjusted them to be allmost the same between each other. Here are small introductions of the links added as new ones;

Finnish Road Weather Cameras; This has allready been on the front in this blog. The cameras in question are showing rather well weather conditions and proceedings of the seasons in whole Finland along with the regional differences. A part of the pictures are bad considering the nature observing, but an other part of them are very good. I have been observing for example unfolding leaves, appearing of fall colours and snow conditions for years from thís site in addition to the normal road condition information. The site is in finnish, but it may not be a bad thing when browsing, because the pages are heavily picture based.

Finland's environmental administration; The specific link isn't found in english here; it shows monthly water condition reports, which are telling water situations of all kinds of water areas in all continental Finland. Here is a link to the administration itself in english; in the sidebars there are the actual finnish links only.

Finnish Institute of Marine Researc - the ice condition; The same may be said about this link as in the case of the previous, but this is also heavily picture based site and the language isn't therefore such a big issue here. This page shows illustrative pictures of ice conditions on all sea areas touching Finland's soil. The ice condition page is being updated only during winter (on every tuesday). Therefore at this phase there has been stucked on the last ice condition picture of the previous ice period from the last spring. An excellent site to observe and examin a link between the weather and the sea ice (sea temperatures as well in some extent). I have observed this site as well for years.

Gaisma's sunrise and sunset times at Helsinki; This has allready been on the front in my blog trilogy. In addition to the sunrise and sunset times the graph on the page shows well also the times of dusk, dawn and darkness during every seasons. One can be able to examin corresponding informations from the site on all over the earth on various locations.

Kuvapuisto; A finnish photo blog, which contains especially nature related photographs. Very nice!

4Seasons In Southern Finland; Here is also a nature related finnish photo blog (note; in english). Its idea is resembling the idea of my blog trilogy, where one observes the seasons by photographing, but here ofcourse from their (several makers) own point of view.

I will add the link collections more again later.

Blogien säätöä ja kielenkääntöä - Adjusting and translating the blogs

I have now modified the credits and my blog profile (now also in english) on the sidebars of my blogs. At the same time the name of this blog changed a little. Now my aim is to finally start making tags to all of my posts. At the same time I'll translate those posts into english, which are yet only in finnish in this blog. When I have translated one month's old posts into english, I will make posts about it as advertisments every time. One can observe the proceeding of the translations also before them. Along with the translations I will return the Plant of The Week series I made during 2005 - 2006. Will it be as a taster of my big plant photography project before its publishing. It must be notified, that all this will proceed slowly due to the other projects being present at the same time.

Hallavauriot lähes olemattomat - Ground frost damages allmost nonexistent

Eteläntrumpettipuu l. katalpa - Indian Beantree / Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides)

Laji - Common Pricklyash (Zanthoxylum americanum)

Valeakaasia - Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)

Jumaltenpuu - Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima)

Kentuckynkahvipuu - Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioica)

Siipiköynnös - Regel's Threewingnut (Tripterygium regelii)

Katsura - Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum)

Tänään kävin katsomassa taimistollani kasvien tilanteita ja samalla valokuvasin niitä. Kuvasatoa sain kahteen eri aiheeseen.

Today I visited my nursery to check out situations of the plants and at the same time I photographed them. I got photo crop for two different matters. Today I show you the first matter, which tells about the influences of the last friday's ground frost at night. The photo series above is selected according to that.

As I thought, the ground frost leaved fortunately the damages very minor and practically allmost insignificant. I haven't had such a good luck before during my plant cultivation career in September. The only small damages appear in the photos as blackish brown dried up spots on young leaves. In the cases of Katsuratree, Tree-of-heaven and Indian Beantree they appear when looked closely. In the case of Regel's Threewingnut that is observed as lightly brownish tone on the leaf surfaces. Based on the damages the ground frost remained on a thin layer above the ground; estimated as lower than a knee. All even very sensitive unfinished growth above that level didn't suffer any frost damages. Examples of that are Common Pricklyash and Black Locust. There wasn't ground frost on every spot lower that level either; Kentucky Coffeetree is an example of that. In addition to the species in those photos same kinds of very small damages suffered only Grapes (Vitis sp.) and Woodbines (Parthernocissus sp.) in two plant boxes.

In the future there won't be a fear of ground frost, because the weather will continue so unstable during the starting week. In other words winds and clouds with their rains will keep night temperatures high (over +5 C and at some nights even about +10 C). Afternoon temperatures won't reach over +15 C except maybe tomorrow, but at the weekend there are signs of the weather to get warmer along with southwesterly winds. Then with a good luck even a so called indian summer (and about +20 C) might be possible during sunday - the beginning of the following week. However it is so far away yet and forecasts will have time to change before that...

Katseet syyskuun 2006 lopun maan pintaan - Eyes to the land surface of late September 2006

Viimein olen taas päivittänyt Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth -blogia. Päivitys kattaa syyskuun 2006 lopun. Merkinnöissä havaitaan mm. sen kuun ennätyslämpimyyden vaikutuksia.

At last I have updated again the blog Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth. The update reaches the latter part of September 2006. In the posts we can observe for example influences of that month's record warm conditions.

Syyskuun 2007 kuvatäydennys blogitrilogiaan - The photo addition of September 2007 to the blog trilogy

Taas on aika täydentää blogitrilogian Flickr -kuvasarjoja. Kuvia on nyt lisätty aikajaksolla kuluvan kuun 7. päivän iltapäivästä eiliseen iltaan asti. Tässä ovat linkit; blogi 1, blogi 2 ja blogi 3.

It is time again to add the Flickr photo sets of the blog trilogy. There have now been added photos in the time scale between the current month's 7th day's afternoon and yesterday's evening. Here are the links; the blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3.

Vuodenaikoja (ruskaa) kelikameroista - Seasons (fall colours) from the weather cameras

At this moment fall colours are starting to be at their peak in Lapland. As opposed to that fall colours appear only locally (not counted for the birches (Betula sp.) I mentioned last monday) in southern Finland and a summer foliage prevails especially on foreign species. The proceeding of the fall colours can be observed well from the weather cameras of the Finnish Road Administrator in the way of a by-product. I mentioned allready in August about this site to be suitable for the observing of the seasons in an excellent way; differences between various parts of Finland amongst others. One can browse hundreds of locations from the maps on the site, but all doesn't show properly nature or parks beside the roads and the streets. However views on many locations are fine and on single places even excellent. I will put this link also to the sidebars of my every blog.

Hallaraportti - A ground frost report

The last night was again cold in southern Finland. Yesterday there flowed such a cool air mass from the north after a low pressure, that the afternoon temperatures remained for the first time under +15 C even during a rather clear weather. In the evening the weather started to clear and calm down in such a way, that I was nervous about frost damages finally to hit at my nursery.

I have now checked out local weather observations (here is for example Helsinki's report) from the pages of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, where there are temperature graphs from the last 24 hours in real time amongst others; includes forecasts for the next 5 days as well. It looks like the temperatures didn't drop any colder (allthough it was intimidated so in the forecasts) than during the nights of weak ground frost earlier this month. There was locally frost in the air around the city of Tampere, but for example around Helsinki area the air temperature remained above zero C; there was ground frost though at the Tapiola district of Espoo as well in open low ground areas. So there are hopes, that my sensitive plants would have been gone through further very narrowly and their prepairing for the winter would have yet more time. However this must be checked out yet...

Now during the weekend there will come a rather strong low pressure from the west into Finland with its winds and rains, so therefore the risk of ground frost will disappear for now. However the air mass won't warm up significantly; the afternoon temperatures will remain under +15 C, but the night temperatures will rise above +5 C. The rather profuse rains will cause now the fact, that fall colours may delay further on many plants.

Blogitrilogian päivitys ja muutos - The update and a change of the blog trilogy

Jatkossa tämä tekstien supistaminen koskee em. blogin lisäksi Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth blogia.

Late last evening I finished the Taivaankansi - Firmament blog update regarding the end of September 2006. I decided to decrease the amounts of texts further as compared to earlier amounts. I consider yet, if I will change the early September posts in the same way or if I will leave them untouched. In the future this decreasing of the texts will be regarding the blog Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth in addition to the mentioned blog. I will change also the credits of these blogs according to that in the near future. The blog Maisema - Landscape will remain entact. That blog will be giving a whole picture and will include matters in a wider scale. Those other blogs will act as spin-offs focused on special matters.

Koivujen ennenaikainen ruska ja normaalihko syyssää - Premature fall colours of birches and a rather normal fall weather

Last weekend I made observations of the fall colours as I visited Hämeenlinna. The actual fall colours are yet a bit late of the average schedule, but there have now appeared a lot of premature fall colours on birch trees in southern Finland. A birch rust (not a proper link available) spreaded strongly on the leaf surfaces of these trees is responsible for making these fall colours to be premature. This fungus disease got a good start for its growing in the humid conditions of August and now in the cool weather it has spreaded widely onto the trees making the leaves to turn yellow in very large amounts. There seems to be leaves turned yellow the least on trees of urban areas and the most at wet localitys, like near swamps. At swamp areas many willow (Salix sp.) species suffered from same kinds of yellow leaves allready since the end of July.

The actual fall colours of the birch trees are separated from the fungus disease fall colours by the colour tones; the fungus disease colours are dull and yellowish brown. There do is allready a bit of actual bright fall colours among there as well. These premature fall colours of the birches are observed also from the fact, that other broadleave tree species in the observed area are yet allmost in full summer foliage. Normally for example European Aspen (Populus tremula) and the birches are approximately peaking their fall colours at the same time around the turn of September and October or at the beginning of October in southern Finland. Now the bright fall colours of the birches remain unappeared for the most part and the fall colour season will be poor (many broadleave trees in the southern finnish wild are birches - Downy Birch (Betula pubescens) and Silver Birch (Betula pendula) ).

To the end few words about the weather and a risk of ground frost. During last nights here in southern Finland there have been such amounts of clouds, that fortunately there haven't barely been ground frost despite a calm weather. The sensitive plants of my nursery have therefore propably remained further without frost damages. There have been clearly observed also the feature, that there haven't been ground frost by the coast due to the warming effect of the sea as well. In the future the weather will be further rather cool (afternoon temperatures about +15 C), but clouds and later windy conditions will keep the nights mostly without ground frost. Only during the next night and friday night there may be a small risk of ground frost in inland areas. There will be rain at wednesday and possibly heavier at the weekend...
