Eilen päästiin Etelä-Suomessa monin paikoin lähelle +20 astetta iltapäivällä. Tämä oli siis viikon lämpimin päivä, mutta ennustekartat näyttävät keskiviikon - perjantain aikana vain pientä tilapäistä viilenemistä ja viikonlopusta lähtien jatkuu taas samanlainen kesäinen sää. Silloin Suomen koillis - itäpuolelle näyttää asettuvan valtava korkeapaine, joka voisi kierrättää kaakosta Suomeen hyvin lämmintä ilmaa jopa pitkälle ensi viikkoon; nähtäväksi jää, josko lokakuun kaikkien aikojen lämpöennätykset ovat silloin vaarassa rikkoontua... Kasvien kasvatuksen kannalta hallattomat (ke - pe viileneminen ei vaikuta merkittävästi yölämpötiloihin pilvien ja tuulten avustuksella) ja osaltaan siksi parhaimmat mahdolliset kasvuolosuhteet (ajankohtaan nähden) jatkuvat tukevasti vielä pitkään.

Tämä lämpöaalto on jälleen antanut minulle myös aihetta tuoda esille asioita ilmastonmuutoksen ja kasvien kasvatuksen suhteen ja etenkin siten, että näihin aiheisiin on sisällytettävä kritiikkiä jälleen kerran. Kritiikin aiheita on kaksi, kuten oli tämän vuoden alussakin; kasvatuskaudesta toiseen siirtyminen huonolla tavalla lämpöaallosta välittämättä ja ilmastonmuutokseen liittyvän skeptisyyden ihmettely ja ihmiskunnan ison osan saamattomuus, välinpitämättömyys ja kykenemättömyys toimia ilmastonmuutoksen edellyttämällä tavalla.

Otetaanpa esimerkki ensin tuosta joustamattomuudesta kasvien kasvatuksessa ja höystetään sitä hyvällä esimerkillä. Tämäkin liittyy osaltaan ilmastonmuutoksen tuomiin muutoksiin. Kotini kerrostalojen pihoilla on jo nyt poistettu kesäkukat altaistaan, kuten ylimmästä kuvasta havaitaan. Kyseessä olivat mm. ahkeraliisat (Impatiens walleriana), joissa oli vielä runsaasti kukintaa ja hallavaurioita ei ollut ollenkaan. Vastaavia tapauksia on varmasti paljon ympäri eteläistä Suomea. Niinpä täytyy suuresti kritisoida tällaista kauneuden ennenaikaista poistamista. Lämpöaalto mahdollistaisi tällaistenkin kasvien kasvattamisen vielä pitkään. Esimerkillisesti tässä asiassa on toiminut Helsingin kaupungin Rakennusvirasto, joka hoitaa edelleen alemmassa kuvassa nähtäviä Esplanadin puiston kesäkukkia (kuva on otettu tänään ja siinä on hopeavillakkoa (Senecio cineraria), ahkeraliisaa ja härmesalviaa (Salvia farinacea) ), vaikka kalenterin mukaan syyskuu on pian vaihtumassa lokakuuksi.

Sen sijaan ensin mainitussa tapauksessa Tapiolan Lämpö OY (joka hoitaa ko. pihoja) noudattaa perinnettä, jonka mukaan kesäkukat täytyy poistaa syyskuun loppuun mennessä (kun muka ovat menneet huonoiksi tai muu huono tekosyy tällaisessa tilanteessa). Tämä on esimerkki siitä joustamattomuudesta, jota ei pidä harjoittaa ilmastonmuutoksen tuomien muutosten edessä. Jos lämmintä piisaa ja pakkasta ei ole ollut, niin eikö ole syytä mennä sään mukaan eikä kiirehtiä turhaan syksyllä tai kuten viime keväänä; pitää kiirehtiä joissakin asioissa selvästi normaalia enemmän, koska kasvukausi on jo aikoja sitten alkanut. Ilmaston lämpenemiseen sopeutumisen tulee tarkoittaa mm. perinteisistä käytännöistä luopumista uusien sopivampien takia selvästi sitä vaativissa tapauksissa ja jo tässä vaiheessa tällaiset lämpöaallot tulee ottaa harjoitteluna sitä varten. Valitettavasti Suomi on edelleen aivan liian mielikuvitukseton, kaavoihinsa kangistunut, rahanvallassa oleva ja hidas maa puisto- ja puutarhakulttuurissaan, joten asioiden muuttamiseksi joutuu tekemään paljon.

Ilmastonmuutoksen suhteen olen lukenut äskettäin mm. näitä Iltasanomien mielipidepalstalla olleita puheenvuoroja siitä, josko ilmastonmuutos totta vai ei ja onko se ihmisten aikaansaamaa. Monista niistäkin puheenvuoroista loistaa valitettavasti kauas ja kirkkaana tietämättömyys, välinpitämättömyys ja jopa selvä tyhmyys. Onneksi joukossa on muutamia perehtyneitä ja fiksuja ihmisiä, jotka ovat oivaltaneet edes vähän asian tilaa; ilmastonmuutos suurimmaksi osaksi ihmisten aiheuttamana on jo käynnissä ja ensimmäiset merkit ovat siitä nähtävillä; mm. ennen kuulumattomat lämpöaallot, joissa alle vuodessa rikkoontuu tunnetun historian lämpöennätykset kolme kertaa (jopa neljäskin voi tulla pian lokakuun alussa...). Muistakaapa myös muutaman viime vuoden tapahtumia laajemmaltikin esim. Euroopassa; päättyneen kesän ennätyshelteet kaakossa, viime syksyn ja talven ennätysleutous laajalla alueella, ennätyshelle vuonna 2003 jne. Näyttää varmasti siltä, että tilastojen ja havaintojenkin valossa ilmastonmuutos on jo iholla asti tunnettavissa.

Tässä (pitkän ajan keskiarvoja Suomessa) on Helsingin Puistolan säätilastot vuodesta 2003 alkaen, joista havaitaan tämän hetkistä tilannetta (täytyy muistaa silti, että ilmastonmuutos on suhteellisen hidas prosessi yhden ihmiselämän mittakaavassa, mutta ERITTÄIN nopea maapallon historian mittakaavassa). Tavanomaista kylmempiä jaksoja on ollut, mutta tavanomaista lämpimämpiä jaksoja on ollut paljon enemmän etenkin parin - kolmen viime vuoden aikana; esim. toistuneet syksyjen lämpöaallot ovat olleen huomattavia. En ihmettele yhtään, jos sama jatkuu parina tulevanakin vuonna ja siitä eteen päin ajoittain yhä selvemmin; välillä kylmää, mutta ihmeteltävän usein ja voimakkaasti hyvin lämmintä ja uusia ennätyksiäkin... Toisaalta en ihmettele yhtään sitäkään, jos lämpeneminen pitää ns. pari vuotta taukoa siinä välissä. Keskimäärin lähimmät 100 vuotta menevät varmasti koko ajan lämpenevässä maailmassa joka tapauksessa.

Muissa blogeissa järkevää ja perehtynyttä argumentaatiota aiheesta on ollut esim. Jarin blogi - biologiaa ja maantiedettä ja Tiedemies blogeissa. Niiden sijaan tässä on ilmastonmuutokseen skeptisesti suhtautuva sivusto. Olen tässä sitä mieltä, että ilmastonmuutokseen ei pidä suhtautua hysteerisesti, vaan päättäväisyydellä ja mielikuvituksella. Sen sijaan mm. tuossa GreenFree Finland sivustossa ilmenevää skeptisyyttä ja välinpitämättömyyttä ilmastonmuutosta kohtaan täytyy karttaa huolellisesti ja päättäväisesti (kunhan on ensin käynyt lukemassa sieltä pahimmat väärät tiedot; mm. nimimerkit tuc ja Tommi B ohjaavat sivuston keskustelufoorumeilla kiitettävästi oikean tiedon pariin).

Huomautan taas, että ilmastonmuutokseen oikein suhtautuminen ei ole enää yksinomaisesti vain ko. ilmiön torjumista, vaan myös siihen sopeutuminen on tärkeää. Selvää on jo nyt, että ilmastonmuutos etenee torjuntatoimista huolimatta enemmän tai vähemmän. Torjuntatoimia vaikeuttavat osaltaan ilmastonmuutosskeptikot ja muut välinpitämättömät ihmiset, koska heidän syystään yhteiseen hiileen puhaltaminen ei ole riittävän laajaa, päämääriä ei saada riittävän selkeiksi ja toimintaa riittävän tehokkaaksi ko. tavoitteita kohti. Tärkeää on huomioida myös muut ympäristöongelmat; saasteet, ylikansoitus jne.

Tästä muutokseen sopeutumisesta kirjoitin jo viime talvena, mutta tässä on vielä uudestaan tällaisen ympäristön suunnittelijan ja luovan sielun näkökulmaa; kaikki suunnittelu ja rakentaminen, joka ei jo tästä lähtien ota ilmastonmuutoksen tuomia asioita ja vaihtoehtoja huomioon, on vääränlaista suunnittelua ja rakentamista. Kaikki kaupunkitilat, puistot, istutukset, rakennukset, sillat, tiet ym., jotka suunnitellaan ja rakennetaan tänään - lähitulevaisuudessa, ovat vielä 100 vuodenkin päästä olemassa, mutta todennäköisesti hyvin paljon uudenlaisissa olosuhteissa (mm. tulvien, kuivuuden, tuulituhojen, erikoisten lämpöolojen, sairauksien ja ihmismielen muutosten tuomat riskit ja haasteet). Olosuhteissa, joita on voitava ennakoida jo tänään.

Näitä olosuhteita on voitava käsitellä myös mahdollisuuksina (positiivisten kehityslinjojen näkeminen, uudet innovatiiviset ja avartavat ratkaisumallit, muutoksen tuomien hyvien vaihtoehtojen hyväksikäyttäminen monipuolisesti hyvin aikein jne.), jotka helpottavat muutokseen sopeutumista. Tärkeää silloin on sekin, että omaa mielikuvitusta ja joustamiskykyä niin yksilöiden suhteen kuin kokonaisten kulttuurien sisällä ja niiden kesken. Tällaisessa muutoksessa tarvitaan tietenkin paljon perehtyneitä, sydämeltään eheitä ja vahvoja sieluja tärkeisiin tehtäviin, mutta valitettavasti nykyisenlaisessa kulttuurissamme heistä on suurta pulaa ja sen sijaan joudumme kärsimään yhä liikaa mm. ahdasmielisestä ja yksisilmäisestä skeptisyydestä, häikäilemättömästä roskaamisesta / tuhoamisesta, välinpitämättömistä, ahneista, tietämättömistä ja kieroon kasvaneista egoisteista ja osaltaan sitä kautta monenlaisesta pelkuruudesta ja kykenemättömyydestä kohdata ko. ongelmaa / haastetta mahdollisimman hyvin... Kyllä sellainen ajoittain masentaa ja lannistaa minuakin, mutta edessä olevan matkan positiivisella tavalla haastava luonne on edelleen selvänä mielessäni :)

Päivitys 27.9.2007 klo. 13.10.: Lisäsin tuon Puistolan säätilastolinkin yhteyteen Ilmatieteenlaitoksen tilastosivun, jossa Suomen tavanomaisten lämpötilojen hahmottamista helpottavat muutamat pitkän ajan tilastot (Helsingin Kaisaniemen kuukausitilastot). Näin voitte havaita, kuinka lämmintä viime vuosina on jo ollut. Siitä osasyy kuuluu siis ilmastonmuutokselle.

Yesterday temperatures were near +20 C in many places in southern Finland during the afternoon. So it was the warmest day of the week, but forecast maps are showing only a small and temporary cooling during wednesday - friday and from the weekend onwards a same kind of summery weather will continue. At that time there seems to be strengthening a huge high pressure in the northeastern - eastern side of Finland, which would circulate very warm air from the southeast into Finland even for a long way into the following week; it remains to be seen, whether the all time records of October's high temperatures are in danger to be broken then... Regarding the plant cultivation the frostless (the cooling of wednesday - friday doesn't have a significant effect to the night temperatures as helped by clouds and winds) and partly because of that the best possible growing circumstances (considering the time of the year) will continue firmly yet for a long time.

This wave of warm air has given me again a reason for bringing up matters concerning the climate change and a cultivation of plants and especially in the way, that there must be added criticism into those matters once again. There are two matters of criticism as there was in the early part of the year as well; moving from the cultivation season to the other in a bad way not taking account a warm period and wondering of the scepticism relating to the climate change and human kind's major part's inefficiency, indifference and incapability to act according to the way the climate change requires.

Let's take firstly an example of that inflexible way to cultivate plants and spice it up with a good example. This as well is relating for its own part to changes the climate change will bring. At the yards of my home's apartment buildings the seasonal summer flowers have allready been taken away from their containers, as it is seen in the topmost photo. The plants in question were for example Busy Lizzies (Impatiens walleriana), which had yet plenty of flowers and there wasn't frost bites at all. Surely there are similar cases a lot around southern Finland. Therefore this kind of premature removing of beauty must be criticized a lot. The wave of warm air would make possible the cultivation of these kinds of plants as well yet for a long period of time in many places. A good example in the matter here is showing Helsinki city's Construction office, who are further taking care of the Esplanadi park's seasonal flowers (the photo is taken today and there is Silver Ragworts (Senecio cineraria), Busy Lizzies and Mealy Cup Sages (Salvia farinacea) ) seen in the lower photo, despite September is being turned soon into October according to the calendar.

As opposed to that in the firstly mentioned case Tapiolan Lämpö company (who are taking care of the yards in question) is following a tradition, which is telling that seasonal flowers must be taken away before the end of September (as they have supposedly become bad or an other bad excuse in this situatíon). This is an example of that inflexibility, which mustn't be practised in the front of the changes the climate change will bring. If there is warmth enough and there haven't been frost, so isn't it better to proceed according to the weather and not to hurry unnecessarily in autumn or like in the last spring; one must hurry with some matters much more than normally, because the growing season has started allready a long time ago. The adaptation to the climate change must mean giving up of old traditional means for the use of new more suitable means in the cases clearly needing it and these kinds of warm periods must be taken as an exercise for that allready at this phase. Unfortunately Finland is further way too unimaginative, stiffen into its patterns, depended on money's power and slow country as its park and garden culture is concerned, so therefore it takes a lot to change matters.

Regarding the climate change I have been reading recently for example these (unfortunately not in english) opinions in the Iltasanomat paper's opinion column questioning, wheter the climate change is true or not and is it caused by humans. From those opinions as well there shines unfortunately far and brightly ignorance, indifference and even a plain stupidity. Fortunately there are a few well aquainted and smart persons, who are at least a bit aware of the case's situation; the climate change as caused by humans for the most part is allready under way and the first signs associating with that are allready present to be seen; for example unheard warm periods, where records of high temperatures in the known history are broken three times (in Finland) in less than a year (even the fourth may come soon in October). Do remember cases of the last few years as well in a wider scale for example around Europe; the ended summer's record hot heatwave in the southeast, the record mild conditions of the last autumn and winter in a wide area, the record hot heatwave in 2003 and so on. It surely looks like the climate change is felt on one's skin allready in the light of statistics and observations as well.

Here (long term average values in Finland) are the weather charts of the Puistola district in Helsinki from the year 2003 onwards, from which there is observed a situation of the present time (though, one must remember, that the climate change is a relatively slow process in one human life's scale, but a VERY fast one in the scale of the earth's history). There have been periods colder than the average, but periods warmer than the average have appeared much more especially during recent two or three years; for example repeated warm periods in the autumns have been significant. I won't be amazed, if the same continues also during the following couple of years and from there onwards occasionally evermore clearly; cold every now and then, but in an amazing way frequently and strongly very warm and new records as well... On the other hand I won't be wondering either of the fact, if there will be a so called pause in the warming process between there for a couple of years. On an average the next 100 years will be the time of an all the time warming world in any case for sure.

In other blogs there have been reasonable argumentation regarding the matter for example in the blogs Jarin blogi - biologiaa ja maantiedettä and Tiedemies (unfortunately only in finnish). As opposed to them here is a site with a sceptical view towards the climate change. I am here having an opinion, that one mustn't be reacting in a hysterical way to the climate change, but one must take it with determination and imagination. As opposed to that the scepticism and indifference appearing for example on that GreenFree Finland site towards the climate change must be avoided with care and resolution (though, after one has firstly read the worst wrong information from there; for example pseudonyms tuc and Tommi B are guiding thankfully to the streams of right information on the site's conversation forums; unfortunately only in finnish, but similar debates are on the way around the world.

I point out again, that taking up a right attitude towards the climate change isn't anymore solely just the matter of preventing the phenomenon in question, but adapting to that is important as well. It is clear allready now, that the climate change will proceed more or less despite prevention efforts. Partly for their own part the climate change sceptics and other indifferent people are causing the prevention efforts to become more difficult, because it is their fault that we cannot take united efforts widely enough, the goals cannot be made clear enough and action cannot be made efficient enough towards the goals in question. It is important as well to notice other environmental problems; pollution, overpopulation and so on.

I wrote about this adapting to the change allready last winter, but here is again a view of this enviromental planner / designer and creative soul; all planning and building, which doesn't allready from now on take into account matters and alternatives the climate will bring, is the wrong kind of planning and building. All city spaces, parks, plantings, buildings, bridges, roads and so on, which are being planned / designed and build today - in the near future, are existing even 100 years from now, but propably very much in new kinds of circumstances (for example risks and challenges caused by floods, drought, wind damages, peculiar temperatures, diseases and changes in the human mind). In the circumstances, which must be able to be foreseen allready today.

These circumstances must be able to be handled also as possibilities (seeing positive development lines, new innovative and broadening solutions, taking advantage in a good will of good alternatives brought by the change and so on), which are helping the adaptation to the change. Important then is also the fact, that one has imagination and an ability to be flexible both within persons and within a whole culture and between cultures. In this kind of change we need of course well aquainted, whole hearted and strong souls for important tasks, but unfortunately in the present culture of ours there is a great lack of them and instead of that we have to suffer further too much from narrow minded and one eyed scepticism, inconsiderate littering / destroying, indifferent, greedy, ignorant and twisted egoists and partly due to that many kinds of cowardice and incapability to face the problem / challenge in question in the best possible way... That do has occasionally a capability to depress and paralyse me as well, but the positively challenging character of the journey ahead is further clearly in my mind :)

Update at the 27th of September 2007 at 1.10 PM: I added to the side of that Puistola weather chart link a statistical page of Finnish Meteorological Institute, where there are some long term statistics (the monthly charts of Helsinki Kaisaniemi) to help identify usual temperatures of Finland. In this way you can observe, how warm there have allready been during recent years. So the partial reason for that is the climate change.
