Siementilauksia ja aikaista kevättä - Seed ordering and early spring

Viime päivinä sää on kehittynyt keväiseksi ja se on tuonut uudestaan intoa arboretumprojektiini. Niinpä innostuin tilaamaan siemeniä tämän viikon alussa. Alla on lista lajeista.

Arboretum Mustilalta tilasin seuraavat lajit: viitavaahtera (Acer barbinerve), sirovaahtera (Acer sieboldianum), huntuvaahtera (Acer triflorum), jumaltenpuu (Ailanthus altissima), keltatrumpettipuu (Catalpa ovata), isolehtikatsura (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), kanadannuppupuu (Cercis canadensis), partapensas (Chionanthus virginicus), kanukkalaji (Cornus florida), kanukkalaji (Cornus kousa var. chinensis), mustasaarni (Fraxinus nigra), kolmioka (Gleditsia triacanthos), maakkia (Maackia amurensis), kuriilienkirsikka (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis), viitaheisi (Viburnum cassinoides), hurtanheisi (Viburnum lantanoides), heisilaji (Viburnum macrocephalum), kirsikkaheisi (Viburnum prunifolium), (japanin)sinisade (Wisteria floribunda), sinisade (Wisteria sinensis) ja neidonhiuspuu (Ginkgo biloba).

Exotic Gardenilta tilasin seuraavat lajit: eteläntrumpettipuu / katalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), narrinpensas (Decaisnea fargesii), neidonhiuspuu (Ginkgo biloba), kentuckynkahvipuu (Gymnocladus dioica), kolmioka (Gleditsia triacanthos), loistomagnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana), keisaripuu (Paulownia tomentosa), hopealehmus (Tilia tomentosa), pagodipuu (Sophora japonica), valeakaasialaji (Robinia fertilis).

Moni näistä siemenistä vaatii sen verran esikäsittelyjä ennen kylvöä, että en voi kylvää niitä tänä vuonna; esim. kaikki heidet. Näiden lajien saanti on myös epävarmaa riippuen ostopaikkojen varastoista. Osa lajeista on jo ennestään minulla siemeninä, mutta kartutin ko. lajien siemenmäärää lisää varmuuden vuoksi. Osa noista lajeista on myös jo olemassa taimikasvatuspaikallani tai arboretumissani, mutta ne siemenet ovat varalla päättyvän talven mahdollisten tuhojen takia... Itse keräsin viime vuonna lähinnä vain rusokirsikan (Prunus sargentii) siemeniä, mutta niitäkään en laittanut tällä kertaa esikäsittelyihin. Niinpä tänä keväänä ainoat lajit kylvöohjelmassani ovat yllä olevat tummennetut lajit. Tämä on ensimmäinen kerta yli 10 vuoteen, kun kylvöohjelmassani on näin vähän lajeja. Tämä on hyvä, koska muita arboretumhommia on paljon tämän vuoden aikana. Ensi vuonna saatan lisätä uusien lajien määrää taas uudestaan...

En ole vielä tänä vuonna käynyt tarkistamassa tilanteita taimikasvatuspaikallani enkä arboretumissani, mutta kahden seuraavan viikon sisällä teen niin ainakin ensin mainitun paikan kohdalla. Tarkistaminen helpottuu, koska viimein helmikuuksi sataneet lumet ovat sulamassa tällä ja ensi viikolla nopeasti pois, kun sää on jälleen muuttunut tavanomaista selvästi lämpimämmäksi. Määritelmänkin mukaan kevät alkaa Etelä-Suomessa viimeistään tulevana viikonloppuna, koska silloin vuorokauden keskilämpötila on ollut jo yli 5 vuorokautta peräkkäin yli 0 astetta. Ensi viikolla päivälämpötilat ovat jo lähellä +10 astetta. Se tapahtuu jopa n. 3 viikkoa tavanomaista aikaisemmin. Kasvukauden alkamisesta ei silti voida vielä puhua, vaikka esim. leppien (Alnus sp.) ja pähkinäpensaan (Corylus avellana) kukinnat alkavat nyt kehittyä eteenpäin. Joka tapauksessa tämän vuoden maaliskuun sää on nyt totaalisesti erilainen kuin viime vuonna samaan aikaan; silloinhan sää jatkui pitkään ankaran talvisena aurinkoisista säistä huolimatta. Tänä vuonna ns. oikea talvi jäi nyt vain n. 1,5 kuukauden mittaiseksi...



During last days the weather have been evolved into spring-like and that have brought enthusiasm again into my arboretum project. Therefore i became inspired to order seeds at the beginning of this week. Underneath there's a list of the species.

From Arboretum Mustila i ordered the following species: Ussuri Maple / Red-twig Korean Maple (Acer barbinerve), Siebold Maple (Acer sieboldianum), Three-flower Maple (Acer triflorum), Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), Chinese Catalpa (Catalpa ovata), Broad-leafed Katsuratree (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), White Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus), Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), Chinese Dogwood (Cornus kousa var. chinensis), Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra), Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis), Japanese Alpine Cherry (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis), Witherod (Viburnum cassinoides), Hobblebush / American Wayfaringtree (Viburnum lantanoides), Chinese Snowball (Viburnum macrocephalum), Blackhaw Viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium), Japanese Wisteria (Wisteria floribunda), Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) ja Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba).

From Exotic Garden i ordered the following species: Southern Catalpa / Indian Beantree (Catalpa bignonioides), Blue Bean Shrub (Decaisnea fargesii), Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba), Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioica), Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana), Empress Tree / Foxglove Tree (Paulownia tomentosa), Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa), Japanese Pagoda Tree (Sophora japonica), Bristly Locust (Robinia fertilis).

Many of these seeds require so much pre treatments before sowing, that i can't sow them this year; for example all Viburnum species. The supply of these seeds is also uncertain depending on storages of the places of purchase. I got allready a part of the species as seeds, but i raised further the seed amounts of the species in question for safety's sake. A part of those species are allready existing in my nursery place or in my arboretum, but those seeds are on stand-by due to possible damages of the ending winter... Last year i collected myself mainly just seeds from Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii), but i didn't put them on pre treatments in this time. Therefore the only species in my sowing program this spring are the bolded species above. This is the first time since more than 10 years, that there are so little amount of species in my sowing program. That is good, because there are so much other tasks in the arboretum project during this year. Next year i might increase again the amount of new species...

I haven't been checking the situations in my nursery or arboretum yet during this year, but in the space of two following weeks i'll do that at least with the firstly mentioned place. The checking is getting easier, because the snow fallen finally until February is melting fast away during this and the next week, as the weather have been turning again clearly warmer than usually. Also according to the definition the spring will start in southern Finland at the latest during the coming weekend, because then the daily mean temperature have allready been over 0 C for more than 5 days in a row. Next week the afternoon temperatures will be allready near +10 C. That'll happen even about three weeks earlier than usually. The beginning of the growing season cannot be talked about yet though, allthough for example the bloomings of Alders (Alnus sp.) and European Hazel (Corylus avellana) will start to develope foward from now on. In any case this year's March weather is now totally different than in the same time last year; then the weather continued severely wintry despite the sunny weather conditions. This year a so called real winter remained only about 1,5 months long...
