Lisää ennätyslämpimän "talven" termisestä määrittämisestä - More about the thermal definition of the record warm "winter"

- 9. tammikuuta.

Sää on kylmenemässä talvisemmaksi täällä Etelä-Suomessa.

Kevätaika on konkreettisempi päivä päivältä ja tätä kylmää jaksoa pitäisi itse asiassa kutsua takatalveksi, koska terminen kevät on jo alkanut aikoja sitten.

The so called winter period ending today formed here in southern Finland the warmest of the measured weather history. In this way the winter 1924 - 25 fell finally to the second place in warmth. I looked through the surface pressure map history of that winter from Wetterzentrale pages and I noticed lots of similarities in the weather situations with this "winter". Then as well there was very active low pressure activity in the western side of Finland over Atlantic, which caused strong and long continuing westerly - southerly winds and frosty periods were just weak and short between them. However, the difference to this year's winter was then the fact, that a short time at the beginning of December and during the latter part of February there prevailed that kinds of cold weather conditions (for example colder readings than -20 C surely appeared according to those maps at least during few nights in inland areas), which haven't been measured a single time this "winter" in southernmost Finland. Therefore this "winter's" weather conditions have been really causing entirely never before seen circumstances in many ways.

One significant matter here is the definition of a thermal winter. From the information of the Helsinki, Puistola weather station (November, December, January and February) we can observe the fact, that using the five day rule, only the period 2nd to 9th of January has been worth to be defined as winter at the station in question. There wasn't nowhere near a same kind of frosty period in February, so therefore there wasn't thermal winter in February at all. In addition by the southwestern coast that January frosty period was so minor, that there wasn't thermal winter even then as well in many places. In this way there has been reached a new mark in the known history in defining seasons!

Already in January I pondered this absurd way of defining winter in these conditions and regarding the climate change. According to that and the mentioned above we can conclude, that in a large part of southern Finland spring started at the 10th of January and in the winterless parts of southwestern - southern coast at the 23rd of December after the winter solstice! Sounds unbelievable, doesn't it?

Let's ponder one alternative a bit more. In Sweden there is apparently in use a definition, where in winterless circumstances autumn can be prolonged in an agreed terms up to the 14th of February and after that spring would be starting straight from autumn. This would be sensible in that way, that springlike phenomenons of plants are coming out in winterless circumstances at the earliest around the turn of January - February. According to this spring started in a wide area in southern Finland at the 15th of February, but that definition is fitting in a bad way to the mild weather after the early January frost (in other words winter); there would be no kind of season at all or would there be autumn again...

So, we are facing the fact, what I already pondered in January. Spring can appear already in December or immediately for example after a winter being happened in January. In the future this kind of thing will become evermore frequent as the climate change proceeds. Next time that may happen perhaps already next year or then in a space of few years... However, there may be soon a need to change definitions. In that case of early January winter one would act in the following way; from the 10th day onwards one would be using a term pre-spring and the actual spring would start from those first pollen observations. In the case of winterless circumstances autumn will continue up to the winter solstice and after that it will be pre-spring into the same pollen situation as in the first case and then the actual spring will start.

For example in this way nature's phenological observations should be taken as one guide with others, in order to create a wholly functional scientific definition for seasons in the new era's climate facing us, which will cause in any case these kinds of never before seen situations and circumstances in the history of mankind. They will demand us to create new models replacing old ones, which this "winter" has pointed out astonishingly for the first time in the known history. As I have conluded, the thermal winter according to the old definition may vanish even completely from the southern Finland's circumstances in a surprisingly fast pace.

To the end information about the weather of the coming days, which may cause changes to the definition of the thermal winter (I will return to the matter). The weather is turning more wintry here in southern Finland. Already today there has been frost at night by the southern coast as well and it has been snowing a bit. During the weekend afternoon temperatures as well will remain under zero C especially in inland areas, but thanks to winds and clouds night temperatures will drop at the lowest in there as well only between -5 C and -10 C and only locally into the colder side of -10 C. So, this winter's frost records aren't hardly to be broken and unbelievably minor winter conditions will continue further in this sense as well, allthough this cold in early March is already a bit colder than usually.

The cold spell is caused by a low pressure moving to the southern side of Finland. It will bring precipitation as well and due to the cool down also the southern coast may get a some kind of snowcover for a short time (in inland areas there has been fallen new snow during this week in many places already for couple of centimetres). However, there are signs in sight of the case, that during the latter part of the next week the weather would warm up again and at this phase of the year that can be already easily fatal to winter in any case... The time of spring will be more concrete day by day and this cold period should be called in fact as a "after winter", because the thermal spring has already started long ago.

Blogitrilogian blogit ovat uudestaan päivityksessä - The blogs of the blog trilogy are being updated again

Muissa blogeissa on lyhyet kuvaukset ko. kuvista. Otsikoiden merkitykset korostuvat tilanteiden kuvaamisessa.

Päätin näin, koska näiden blogien lukijat ovat todennäköisesti eniten sellaisia, että he tietävät jo valmiiksi paljon esim. meteorologiasta. Voin siis jättää esim. säätilanteiden tarkat selitykset pois, kun he löytävät helposti tiedon ääreen itsekin.

I have finally started updating the the blog trilogy's blogs themselves with a new method. Here are the links; the blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3. I have now cut down all explaining texts away from the Maisema - Landsape blog's updating and from now on it is only a link blog (Flickr photos are included in a new way), which the other blogs are supporting. I will connect behaviour of the plants into the links afterwards sometime in the future with the help of my plant photography project; ideas exist... In the other blogs there are short explanations of the photos in question. The meanings of the headlines are getting more profilic, when illustrating the situations.

I decided it this way, because readers of these blogs are propably such people in the most cases, that they know a lot about for example meteorology for a start. So, I can leave away for example specific explanations about the weather situations, because they can find their way to the information by their own as well. An important reason is also the fact, that I don't have time to do long texts onto these blogs. Nothing more about this for now. Please, go to check out the new appearances of the blogs!

Update at the 22nd of January 2008 at 12:15 PM: Please note, that in that weather chart of Puistola, Helsinki there is an error in the temperatures of the 27th and 28th days; it is impossible, that the minimum temperature of the previous day would be higher than the maximum temperature of the following day. Evidently there has been a break in their measurements in the critical moment at the 27th day before the midnight (or immediately after that); the low pressure caused warm weather for all early part of the day and a strong cool down for the rest of the day over the midnight. I corrected the value to the informations of my blogs at the place of the 28th day. Irritating is also the fact, that in the weather maps of the Wetter 3 links there are big breaks just in here at the end of October 2006.

Talven määritys ilmastonmuutoksen paljastajana - The definition of winter as a flasher of the climate change

Taas olemme tulleet tilanteeseen, joka kuvastaa erittäin hyvin ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutuksia. Talven terminen määrittäminen on tällä hetkellä erikoisen tilanteen edessä erittäin leudon sään takia; määritelmän mukaan talvi alkoi etelärannikolla vasta tammikuun alun pakkasjakson aikana.

Tulevina "talvina" palaan varmasti asiaan.

Again we have arrived to the situation, which illustrates very well influences of the climate change. The thermal definition of the winter is at this moment facing a peculiar situation due to the very mild weather; according to the definition winter started by the southern coast only during the early January's frosty period; look that from these charts (A B); all frosty periods were too short at the end of 2007 as remaining only 5 days long (according to the definition only the 6th day of under 0 C readings is countable) at the most according to the daily average temperatures. According to that same 5 day rule winter became interrupted this week largely in southern Finland, as there came days of over 0 C average temperatures more than 5 pieces. So, is it now autumn or spring? That global warming means this already now and in the future these situations will be faced more for sure and in an accelerating pace.

The definition of winter will have to be done in a new way at least in southern Finland. Otherwise we may be facing a situation, where winter cannot be defined at all, as during all "winter season" there won't be coming a frosty period long enough; so winter wouldn't be coming at all. That sounds a very severe matter. If that didn't happen now, then it may be happening in any case already in a very near future and then it will be furthermore common during coming decades. If the five day rule of the winter's start doesn't come true at any phase, then when can autumn be called ended and spring be called started straight from autumn? Is it right to accept only three seasons or must winter be held as the part of our seasons according to a new definition?

In many western Europe's countries winter is being defined with a cosmic method; the starting day is the Winter solstice and the ending day is the Vernal Equinox. With this method winter would become a solid season, but it can be in a contradiction with early starting growing and blooming situations from February onwards. That doesn't feel a good solution over here, as the startings of the other seasons can yet be defined easily with the thermal method also in the warmed up climate. Winter is an exception, because as the climate of the new era will affect furthermore, its fate is to dissappear even completely according to the old definition.

Let's look at different situations. In a winterless situation the ending of autumn and starting of spring would be defined in such a way, that autumn concerns the days before the Winter solstice and after the solstice the winterless situation will be defined as spring. In here one should be accepting the fact, that winter doesn't exist. However, during a transitional phase towards the climate of the new era there will happen many times in such a way, that the thermal winter will yet appear (even normally as well), but we cannot be sure where in the timeline a long enough (but rather short) frosty period will happen. It can be happening at any time between November and March in southern Finland and from there will be causing the following in the Winter solstice definition.

As a frosty period is before the Winter solstice, then autumn will turn straight into winter, then into autumn and then into spring. As a frosty period is well after the Winter soltice, autumn will turn firstly into spring, then into winter and again into spring. The situation of two long enough frosty periods: the first is in November and the second is in February. In this case autumn will turn into winter, then back into autumn, then into spring and again into spring; now you surely notice what kinds of problems will happen. How one should act in different situations?

In the first two cases the situations are as follows. The frosty period in question will be accepted as winter according to the five day rule. The winter happening before the Winter solstice will be stretched after that up to the solstice despite the winterless temperatures and after the solstice the situation will be defined as spring, as long as summer will start later in the following year. In the second case the frosty period happening after the Winter solstice will be defined winter in the same way, but now autumn will be stretched into the winter's start over the winter solstice. Then after the winter sping will start normally according to the five day rule. At this phase we notice the fact, that the definitions of autumn, winter and spring can be made only afterwards, as the situations have already been happened.

In the last case the situation is difficult; winter will be defined to have started from the first frosty period and it will be stretched up to the second frosty period, if the middle phase is shorter than either of the frosty periods. Spring will then start normally after that according to the five day rule. The winterless period inbetween will be named with additional terms in the way, that before the winter solstice is afterautumn and after that is forespring. If the winterless middle phase is longer than either of the frosty periods (or only the first frosty period), then only the longer frosty period will be defined as winter and the shorter one will be overruled. In this case the longer frosty period will be observed in the way mentioned before in regard of the Winter solstice. One must remember, that there can be more than two of these sufficient frosty periods as well, but with long spaces or then with variable ones...

We notice also from these, that a sensibility will disappear from defining winter and seasons will feel odd to experience; autumn can be in February and spring in December. Due to this those new definitions can be quided more according to phenological observations. Under observation are then observations of plants and why not animals as well indicating autumn or spring; a winterless period, where there are more autumnal signs (plants mainly in dormancy, last leaves left on shrubs / trees), will be defined as autumn and not spring and a winterless period, where there are more springlike signs (the species starting blooming the first; alders, hazels and certain bulbous plants and so on), will be defined as spring and not autumn.

We notice here as well the fact, that winter remains complex to define, when we are mixing up all defining methods together. At the same time we have to remember, that geographical differences will complicate matters more; like the differences of borderline cases in a short distance between two different areas. Though, one solution to the defining of winter can be the fact, that winter is being defined according to the growing season; so the limiting value is +5 C and winter is therefore corresponding the time period, when there isn't a growing season. However, we have already noticed in the way of December 2006, that even a growing season can be appearing during so called winter season in so early stage of the climate change.

During coming years we will fall into facing these kinds of deliberations, as far as we want to define winter as much as possible in the way resembling the old method and in a comparable way regarding the other seasons. Or then we will take into use the solid cosmic definition of winter replacing the old thermal one despite problems existing in it as well. In any case there will be coming the situation, where there won't be a frosty period long enough for winter to be defined. An absurd thought, but we will be forced to experience that for the first time in the known history perhaps even very soon. When we are looking at this "winter", then we already see the signs clearly in a historical way; it wouldn't be surprising according to my mind, that for example winter of Helsinki would be this time only at early January, autumn continued up to January and spring would be proceeding slowly from here onwards... The climate change will be radically observed just as observing winter's appearance and scientific definition. During coming "winters" I will surely be back on the case.

Kasvukauden lopun määrittämisestä ilmastonmuutoksen edetessä - About a definition of the growing season's end as the climate change proceeds

Helsingin Puistolan sääaseman lokakuun 2007 tilasto on vihdoin julkaistu muutama päivä sitten.

The weather chart of October 2007 from the weather station of Puistola district in Helsinki has finally been published a few days ago. From that we can observe once again the very mild conditions; the thermal autumn started at the place in question at the 7th of October, which was more than two weeks later than usually. The ending of the growing season according to the definition (the daily average temperatures at least 5 days in a row under +5 C; the ending day is the first day of the series, as the sixth day has happened) was in decline around the 14th - 15th days, but it didn't come true properly. The definition came true at the 19th day, but then from the 25th day onwards the very mild period prevailing to the end of the month caused above +5 C daily average temperatures during more than 5 days.

Just this is that interesting problem in the definition of the growing season's ending, as very mild periods are happening after so called actual growing season. The growing season continues in a way again. During last December it happened just in this way (even 22 days long period from the 24th of November onwards in the way never seen before), but then the vegetation had been started dormancy also in the cases of cultivated species not counted for minor exceptions. Now in the end of October there were a lot of plants with fall colours and even only at the start of fall colours - in summer foliage and the previous frosts had been damaged only little of leaves. In this regard there would be a reason for describing the situation at the end of the month as further a growing season. The situation would be defined for example as with a subterm "after growing season", in order it to be separated from the actual growing season. Because these fall colour bearing - summer foliage plants are found in the late autumn especially within the cultivated species, then the phenomenon can be observed especially at build areas. From there one could deduce a subterm city / build area growing season. The after growing season would be added to the end of the actual growing season, where the ending day of the actual growing season will be removed to the ending day of the after growing season.

As the climate change will proceed, this kind of extended growing season situation can be repeating allready in the near future even several years in a row and can be causing a plenty of life within the vegetation yet even during November. As we know, the proceeding of fall colours is vegetation's life processes, in other words growing in a way. The growing season isn't properly over, before cultivated species as well are completely - allmost completely in dormancy. However, when using this method as well the ending of the growing season in different cases will cause the fact, that at the time of the growing season's end trees and shrubs are bearing fall colours differently in different years.

At some point during November this definition of after growing season could be adjusted according to that behaviour of the (cultivated) vegetation. As there are only very few species partly in leaf anymore or allmost all leaves have been destroyed by earlier frosts, then that kind of warm period causing a "growing season" should be defined in an other way. In this case a suitable term would be "winter growing season" and that wouldn't be added to the end of the actual growing season. In that situation growth and life's processes are happening mainly just in the cases of herbal plants (lawns, annual weeds..); allmost all woody plants are then "realizing" to be in dormancy. In the future this kind as well can be happening at any point in the middle of the so called winter period (December - February). Then in February - March there will come the time for the start of the actual growing season, if there will be happening a peculiarly strong and long warm period. During last March there was the example of just that, as the growing season started much earlier than usually thanks to the record warmth. I wrote then in May about the problems associating with that.

As we can see, definitions of both the starting and the ending of the growing season could turn problematic especially in southern Finland as the climate change proceeds, if one holds on only to the old definging methods. Also at the end of the growing season with the new, sharpening and better to plants suíted definitions one describes the changing circumstances of the future better for example in the case of an ornamental plant cultivation.

Helsingin Esplanadinpuiston kukkaloistoa tänään - A flower display of Helsinki's Esplanadi park today.
.
.
Vastaavia tapauksia on varmasti paljon ympäri eteläistä Suomea. Niinpä täytyy suuresti kritisoida tällaista kauneuden ennenaikaista poistamista. Lämpöaalto mahdollistaisi tällaistenkin kasvien kasvattamisen vielä pitkään. Esimerkillisesti tässä asiassa on toiminut Helsingin kaupungin Rakennusvirasto, joka hoitaa edelleen alemmassa kuvassa nähtäviä Esplanadin puiston kesäkukkia (kuva on otettu tänään ja siinä on hopeavillakkoa (Senecio cineraria), ahkeraliisaa ja härmesalviaa (Salvia farinacea) ), vaikka kalenterin mukaan syyskuu on pian vaihtumassa lokakuuksi.
.
.
Olosuhteissa, joita on voitava ennakoida jo tänään.
.
.
Päivitys 27.9.2007 klo. 13.10.: Lisäsin tuon Puistolan säätilastolinkin yhteyteen Ilmatieteenlaitoksen tilastosivun, jossa Suomen tavanomaisten lämpötilojen hahmottamista helpottavat muutamat pitkän ajan tilastot (Helsingin Kaisaniemen kuukausitilastot). Näin voitte havaita, kuinka lämmintä viime vuosina on jo ollut. Siitä osasyy kuuluu siis ilmastonmuutokselle.

Yesterday temperatures were near +20 C in many places in southern Finland during the afternoon. So it was the warmest day of the week, but forecast maps are showing only a small and temporary cooling during wednesday - friday and from the weekend onwards a same kind of summery weather will continue. At that time there seems to be strengthening a huge high pressure in the northeastern - eastern side of Finland, which would circulate very warm air from the southeast into Finland even for a long way into the following week; it remains to be seen, whether the all time records of October's high temperatures are in danger to be broken then... Regarding the plant cultivation the frostless (the cooling of wednesday - friday doesn't have a significant effect to the night temperatures as helped by clouds and winds) and partly because of that the best possible growing circumstances (considering the time of the year) will continue firmly yet for a long time.
.
This wave of warm air has given me again a reason for bringing up matters concerning the climate change and a cultivation of plants and especially in the way, that there must be added criticism into those matters once again. There are two matters of criticism as there was in the early part of the year as well; moving from the cultivation season to the other in a bad way not taking account a warm period and wondering of the scepticism relating to the climate change and human kind's major part's inefficiency, indifference and incapability to act according to the way the climate change requires.
.
Let's take firstly an example of that inflexible way to cultivate plants and spice it up with a good example. This as well is relating for its own part to changes the climate change will bring. At the yards of my home's apartment buildings the seasonal summer flowers have allready been taken away from their containers, as it is seen in the topmost photo. The plants in question were for example Busy Lizzies (Impatiens walleriana), which had yet plenty of flowers and there wasn't frost bites at all. Surely there are similar cases a lot around southern Finland. Therefore this kind of premature removing of beauty must be criticized a lot. The wave of warm air would make possible the cultivation of these kinds of plants as well yet for a long period of time in many places. A good example in the matter here is showing Helsinki city's Construction office, who are further taking care of the Esplanadi park's seasonal flowers (the photo is taken today and there is Silver Ragworts (Senecio cineraria), Busy Lizzies and Mealy Cup Sages (Salvia farinacea) ) seen in the lower photo, despite September is being turned soon into October according to the calendar.
.
As opposed to that in the firstly mentioned case Tapiolan Lämpö company (who are taking care of the yards in question) is following a tradition, which is telling that seasonal flowers must be taken away before the end of September (as they have supposedly become bad or an other bad excuse in this situatíon). This is an example of that inflexibility, which mustn't be practised in the front of the changes the climate change will bring. If there is warmth enough and there haven't been frost, so isn't it better to proceed according to the weather and not to hurry unnecessarily in autumn or like in the last spring; one must hurry with some matters much more than normally, because the growing season has started allready a long time ago. The adaptation to the climate change must mean giving up of old traditional means for the use of new more suitable means in the cases clearly needing it and these kinds of warm periods must be taken as an exercise for that allready at this phase. Unfortunately Finland is further way too unimaginative, stiffen into its patterns, depended on money's power and slow country as its park and garden culture is concerned, so therefore it takes a lot to change matters.
.
Regarding the climate change I have been reading recently for example these (unfortunately not in english) opinions in the Iltasanomat paper's opinion column questioning, wheter the climate change is true or not and is it caused by humans. From those opinions as well there shines unfortunately far and brightly ignorance, indifference and even a plain stupidity. Fortunately there are a few well aquainted and smart persons, who are at least a bit aware of the case's situation; the climate change as caused by humans for the most part is allready under way and the first signs associating with that are allready present to be seen; for example unheard warm periods, where records of high temperatures in the known history are broken three times (in Finland) in less than a year (even the fourth may come soon in October). Do remember cases of the last few years as well in a wider scale for example around Europe; the ended summer's record hot heatwave in the southeast, the record mild conditions of the last autumn and winter in a wide area, the record hot heatwave in 2003 and so on. It surely looks like the climate change is felt on one's skin allready in the light of statistics and observations as well.
.
Here (long term average values in Finland) are the weather charts of the Puistola district in Helsinki from the year 2003 onwards, from which there is observed a situation of the present time (though, one must remember, that the climate change is a relatively slow process in one human life's scale, but a VERY fast one in the scale of the earth's history). There have been periods colder than the average, but periods warmer than the average have appeared much more especially during recent two or three years; for example repeated warm periods in the autumns have been significant. I won't be amazed, if the same continues also during the following couple of years and from there onwards occasionally evermore clearly; cold every now and then, but in an amazing way frequently and strongly very warm and new records as well... On the other hand I won't be wondering either of the fact, if there will be a so called pause in the warming process between there for a couple of years. On an average the next 100 years will be the time of an all the time warming world in any case for sure.
.
In other blogs there have been reasonable argumentation regarding the matter for example in the blogs Jarin blogi - biologiaa ja maantiedettä and Tiedemies (unfortunately only in finnish). As opposed to them here is a site with a sceptical view towards the climate change. I am here having an opinion, that one mustn't be reacting in a hysterical way to the climate change, but one must take it with determination and imagination. As opposed to that the scepticism and indifference appearing for example on that GreenFree Finland site towards the climate change must be avoided with care and resolution (though, after one has firstly read the worst wrong information from there; for example pseudonyms tuc and Tommi B are guiding thankfully to the streams of right information on the site's conversation forums; unfortunately only in finnish, but similar debates are on the way around the world.
.
I point out again, that taking up a right attitude towards the climate change isn't anymore solely just the matter of preventing the phenomenon in question, but adapting to that is important as well. It is clear allready now, that the climate change will proceed more or less despite prevention efforts. Partly for their own part the climate change sceptics and other indifferent people are causing the prevention efforts to become more difficult, because it is their fault that we cannot take united efforts widely enough, the goals cannot be made clear enough and action cannot be made efficient enough towards the goals in question. It is important as well to notice other environmental problems; pollution, overpopulation and so on.
.
I wrote about this adapting to the change allready last winter, but here is again a view of this enviromental planner / designer and creative soul; all planning and building, which doesn't allready from now on take into account matters and alternatives the climate will bring, is the wrong kind of planning and building. All city spaces, parks, plantings, buildings, bridges, roads and so on, which are being planned / designed and build today - in the near future, are existing even 100 years from now, but propably very much in new kinds of circumstances (for example risks and challenges caused by floods, drought, wind damages, peculiar temperatures, diseases and changes in the human mind). In the circumstances, which must be able to be foreseen allready today.
.
These circumstances must be able to be handled also as possibilities (seeing positive development lines, new innovative and broadening solutions, taking advantage in a good will of good alternatives brought by the change and so on), which are helping the adaptation to the change. Important then is also the fact, that one has imagination and an ability to be flexible both within persons and within a whole culture and between cultures. In this kind of change we need of course well aquainted, whole hearted and strong souls for important tasks, but unfortunately in the present culture of ours there is a great lack of them and instead of that we have to suffer further too much from narrow minded and one eyed scepticism, inconsiderate littering / destroying, indifferent, greedy, ignorant and twisted egoists and partly due to that many kinds of cowardice and incapability to face the problem / challenge in question in the best possible way... That do has occasionally a capability to depress and paralyse me as well, but the positively challenging character of the journey ahead is further clearly in my mind :)
.
Update at the 27th of September 2007 at 1.10 PM: I added to the side of that Puistola weather chart link a statistical page of Finnish Meteorological Institute, where there are some long term statistics (the monthly charts of Helsinki Kaisaniemi) to help identify usual temperatures of Finland. In this way you can observe, how warm there have allready been during recent years. So the partial reason for that is the climate change.

Lisää pohdintaa kasvukauden määrityksistä - More thoughts about the definitions of the growing season

Tällaisen kasviotoksen valinta on tietenkin helppoa niillä sääasemapaikkakunnilla, missä on kasvitieteellinen puutarha.

There is yet a reason to deepen, specify and add things regarding the properties of the growing season, since i have touched the matter with a critical view. I tried to find more information about the matter from the internet, but in addition to the pages of Finnish Meteorological Insitute the information about the effective temperature sum and the growing season in the pages of Wikipedia gives yet a reason for critizising. In addition to the critical view, i give suggestions to the solving of the problems.

There is revealed this in Wikipedia (finnish version): "In Finland the growing season is defined to have started then, when the snow cover have been disappeared from open areas, the daily average temperature is at least five days in a row more than +5 C and the local effective temperature sum is topping 20 degrees during the following five days after that". The problem in there is the setting of the limit into the accumulation of the effective temperature sum yet after that five day long period. This can lead to one problem, which appears for example in the following way; there may happen so, that those days reaching more than +5 C are accumulated less than five days in a row, but for example in three different periods and which are totalling more than 5 days. However the defined growing season haven't been started yet at this phase, allthough there would have been accumulated allready even much more than 20 degrees of the effective temperature sum.

This is also one problem, which is distorting the model in question and the proceeding of the growth in the real environment from each other. That so called undefined accumulation of the effective temperature sum is appearing also in the case mentioned above as a clear growth in nature though. As i mentioned in thursday, plants react practically to the certain amount of warmth in the same way every spring. I mentioned also, that the definitions describing the growing season must be strongly linked to the behaviour of the plants themselves, in order to keep the relationship between the growth and the definition to be appearing as much as possible in the same way in the cases of every year.

The problem described above will be solved in the following way; the definition in question is being tampered yearly according to the behaviour of the plants when needed, in order to keep the growth and the effective temperature sum to be comparable yearly. This requires checking of the observing plants in nature / environment. The accumulation of the effective temperature sum is being chosen as observing criteria in such a way, that earliest possible growing situations will be illustrated with the values of the effective temperature sum. So this means also the values under 20 degrees. In the case above this happens in the following way; as the growing season according to the definition begins, so the effective temperature sum from those previous periods of less than 5 days (when there was more than +5 C) is being counted for in so big amounts, that the value of the effective temperature sum corresponds as finely as possible the growth in the real environment as compared also to the amount of growth in the normal case.

So the normal case (where the extra case is being compared to) is that, where the growing season is starting so to speak neatly straight after five days in a row and the starting day is the first day of that series. In that fragmentary case the starting day of the growing season is being defined to be the day, from where the effective temperature sum has been counted for. This aplies also to the case, where there are a long cold period between a period of less than five days and a period of more than five days, but the growth started during the first period isn't being damaged due to the cold; the growing season starts from the chosen day of the first period. In this way also extra cases happening in different years will be suited to be comparable in the terms of the plants and there won't be appearing big differences in the phenological situations of the plants when compared between different years. A big distortion happened in spring will affect even far into the whole growing season, when calculated the effective temperature sum and compared that with growth conditions of different years.

So the defining of the growing season in this way sharply requires plant observation around the observation post (weather station). There must be selected a selection of plants for this purpose, which are being observed every year then, when the start of the growing season is propable. The selection must be comprehensive enough; for example 25 to 50 species of trees, shrubs, climbers, bulbous plants and perennials, both native and cultivated. The selection must include different localitys as well; shadowy, semishadowy and sunny. Southern walls and other such distorting scorching places aren't included. There must be noticed in the selection, that it contains always also those species, which are showing growth firstly. Picking the earliest growing stages as the measurement is important due to the fact, that they symbolize in any case the beginning of the growing season. Possible late wintry weather conditions since the started growth are only temporary and usually quickly disappearing phenomenons in the middle of the new phase of the nature's cycle of the year.

Choosing this kind of plant selection is of course easy in those weather station localitys, where there is a botanical garden. In other cases the selection will remain narrow and difficult to gather. However it is possible to aply here the fact, that all plants have the tendency to react to the same amount of warmth proportionally in the same rhythm (allthough different plants have different growing rates in there). Therefore linking only the most common species of the same region to the purpose is sufficient enough, if the earliest growing phases of them have been defined as compared to the first values of the effective temperature sum and the relation of this to the rarer species found in the botanical gardens.

It must be noticed yet, what one means with the start of the growing season from the agricultural point of view. This is a different matter and it mustn't be confused with the definitions of the effective temperature sum described above. It is the different matter because of the fact, that in agriculture there are used allmost entirely annual plants, which one have to sow in purpose every spring. Warmth and therefore the accumulation of the effective temperature sum only doesn't have an effect to the sowing time of them, but a big role is playing also the behaviour of the soil; melting of snow and the soil frost, humidity conditions and different warming properties of soil types. Due to this the sowing requirements of the soil are varying unsymmetrically every year and always differently as compared to the accumulation of the effective temperature sum and therefore to the growth of the perennial plants. Therefore the start of the growing season in agriculture cannot be defined in the same way symmetrically as the thermal growing season. From my point of view the growing season associating with agriculture should be described in general as well with a different term to avoid confusion; the term "cultivation season" would be fine in there.

In the commercial outdoors cultivation of horticulture (fruits and berries) there are used allmost entirely perennial species, in which case to describe the start of the cultivation season of them aplies that thermal definition better. However that doesn't describe the start of the growing season of the frost sensitive seasonal plants, which is based completely to the average disappearance time of the ground frost risk (in southern Finland after the first week of June). So there are at least two different growing seasons in horticulture. The third would be the case, where the soil frost have been melted enough or that haven't been formed yet in autumn / fall - winter; unfrozen soil makes possible many kinds of planting tasks even in the middle of winter. In this way to describe outdoors plant cultivation in horticulture there are formed separate terms; unfrozen cultivation season, growing season and summer cultivation season (for the frost sensitive plants). As the greenhouse effect strengthens the unfrozen cultivation season may appear in the middle of winter as well in the way of the last winter.

So as a summary i can say yet, that in the defining of the growing season a multi scientific approach is the most appropriate, where the phenological behaviour of the plants is taken as the foundation of the definitions and that is being applied together with the meteorological definitions fitting in practice. In this way there is reached as precise as possible every year fitting scientific and empiric definition about the properties of the start and proceeding of the growing season. Though, that is yet incomplete due to the reason, that single growing situations can appear even in the middle of winter, as it happened locally in southern Finland last winter.

However that limit of +5 C for the calculation of the effective temperature sum is good enough and it mustn't be altered. Growing situations happening in the conditions colder than +5 C are only exceptions to the rule and the same aplies also to the daily average temperatures warmer than +5 C in the middle of winter. Sometime the climate change may proceed so far though, that a common growing conditions and a definition of the growing season can be happening many days in a row at any time between December - February (in Finland). During last December this happened in large areas of southern Finland and in a way the growing season continued further late. However the growing season can be estimated to have ended during late autumn / fall - early winter despite the warmth in question, when most of the perennial plants have been turned into dormancy completely; fall colour season is completely over, the sprouts of perennials have been died and there isn't appearing new growth as much as in the corresponding temperatures of spring from March onwards. However at some point in the future there might be a need to define thermally a clear growth happening also in the middle of winter and its relation with the growth happening in autumn / fall and spring, but more about that sometime later...

Syysmyrkkylilja, 28.4.2006 - Meadow Shaffron / Naked Ladies (Colchicum autumnale), the 28th of April 2006.

Siinä tehoisalla lämpösummalla on keskeinen rooli.

According to the yesterday's announcement (unfortunately there's no english link available) of Finnish Meteorological Insitute the so called thermal growing season started this year in southern Finland during the 11th to the 13th of April and that the start of the growing season cannot be defined yet in eastern parts of the country due to the fallen snow over there during the turn of the month. I suspected well, that the institute in question didn't have the guts to include in this matter the accumulated effective temperature sum of late March in southern Finland and according to the definition the start of the growing season around the 24th of March at that time; my definition is helped by the weather chart of Puistola, Helsinki and my own observations. I explain here now with photos, why that definition of Finnish Meteorological Institute is false and why it mustn't be used. At the same time i repeat properties associating with the starting and the appearance of the growing season once more.

I placed a photo series of few key species above as photographed both in this and the last year. The photos are taken in the district of Tapiola in Espoo and in Helsinki at the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi. The species in question are illustrating the start and the phase of the growth just at that time, when the growing season has just begun according to the definition. So the definition says; the growing season begins, as the daily average temperature has been more than +5 C at least five days in a row and the starting day is defined to be the first day of that five day series. This is the best possible scientific method (though, not perfect itself either) to describe the starting of the growing season after winter in the circumstances of Finland. In here is also included the accumulation of the effective temperature sum during those days reaching more than +5 C, which describes the amount of the happened growth during the growing season. Plants react slavishly to the certain amount of warmth and all that happens in the same way every spring in the cases of all perennial plants (both the native and the cultivated - trees, shrubs, perennials) in these regions. Year to year practical variations are unimportantly small on the same locality and on an average small also between different localitys as compared with each other. This aplys to the whole growing season, if drought or an unusually early severe night frost in the autumn doesn't alter the matter.

Finnish Meteorological Institute didn't wrongly include the wave of warm weather in March, but it theoretically dismissed the started growing season caused by it due to the cold spell of weather after it. That is wrong because of this; the scientific definitions describing the starting and the proceeding of the growing season must be tightly linked to the behaviour of the plants themselves. This is just clear, because plants react to warmth in the certain way and that way is the same every spring, whether there's ongoing March or April or May. A cold weather period after the started growth mustn't be counted for even due snowing and severe night frosts, if the started growth doesn't suffer properly due to the cold. It would be more understandible, if the cold period would be so severe and so long, that all growth would be damaged and therefore the growth would have to start from the beginning. This didn't happen anywhere near in this case this spring in southern Finland and in large areas there accumulated the effective temperature sum of March during more than five days in a row.

The use of a late wintry weather after the started growth according to the definition in the way Finnish Meteorological Insitute use it will lead to distortions, where the definitions of the growing season and the accumulating effective temperature sum varies from year to year unsymmetrically and that causes confusion and incredible data. As i have said many times before, it is important, that the definitions describing the growing season and the effective temperature sum are counted in to the growth's proceeding in the same way every year and expressly in the terms of the plants without the mentioned distorting meteorological definitions. If the concept of the effective temperature sum and the growing season must be defined scientifically, then it cannot be done only theoretically according to some unsuitable model, but there must be strongly counted for also phenological properties of the plants in the real environment. Now Finnish Meteorological Insitute has dismissed them completely.

So in the pictures above we see as photo pairs the pictures of the same plants taken both in this and the last year. The photos of the year 2006 are taken at the 28th of April and this year's photos are taken at the 26th of March and from them the Goat Willow picture at the 25th of March. Using the weather chart (maaliskuu = March, huhtikuu = April) of Puistola, Helsinki we can define the effective temperature sums describing the amount of growth in the following way; last year the amount of the effective temperature sum since the started growth according to the definition was at that 28th day 16,3 degrees. This year at that 25th day the amount of the effective temperature sum since the started growth according to the definition was 0,8 degrees and at the 26th day of March 2,3 degrees. As comparing the photos we can observe, that during both years the amounts of growth phases in the cases of all plants were approximately the same despite the totally different times in different years. Just like the effective temperature sum reveals when used correctly. I could have placed several dozens of species in display both from Finland's nature and from cultivated species to describe the same matter; here (not translated yet in english) are more growing phases of the last year's April. From the both year's effective temperature sums of the days in question we observe, that in the situations of the last year's pictures the growing season was slightly more proceeded than in this year's pictures. It shows also in practice, if you look at the pictures a bit closer.

In any case here is the clear indication of the fact, that plants react in the very same way every year to the certain amount of warmth, allthough the appearance time of the warmth in question varies from year to year. The variation of that time mustn't be confusing in the way to make a false definition even in extreme circumstances, as it has now happened in Finnish Meteorological Institute in the case of the record warmth of March. That late March growth of this year fits totally in the same way as the definition of the started growing season as did the growth of last year only at the end of April, which was then approximately on an average time.

In the future the climate change will propably cause same kinds of situations more often and more powerfully. In order those definitions describing the growing of the plants to hold true in a credible way also then in these regions, the definitions used by Finnish Meteorological Insitute must be bravely altered and specified. Defining of the phenological growing phases of the plants to be comparable between different years starting with the earliest growing conditions requires specification of the growing season's start and therefore also the concept of the effective temperature sum to be commensurable in the cases of every year fitting in practice. Otherwise there aren't grounds to the definition of the phenological situations of plants. The effective temperature sum has a cruicial role in that.
