Viljelysäätiedotus laiskuuden keskellä - A cultivation weather report in the middle of lazyness

Olen ollut viime aikoina laiska kaikissa näissä nettihommissani ja arboretumprojektissani, koska on välillä hyvä suunnata energiaansa muualle ja ottaa myös rennommin. Ehkä vielä jokusen hetken jatkan samaan malliin, mutta palaan nyt kertomaan lyhyesti uusimpia tietoja tulevasta viljelysäästä.

Hyvin viileä sää on jatkunut näihin päiviin asti, mutta onneksi runsas pilvisyys on ehkäissyt hallaa osassa Etelä-Suomea kahden viime yön aikana. Näin on käynyt esim. Helsingin seudulla. Päivälämpötilat ovat nousseet tänään paikoin +15 asteen lähelle. Jatkossa lännessä ja luoteessa oleva korkeapaine lähtee siirtymään hitaasti Suomen ylle, mutta Etelä-Suomi säilyy viikon loppuun asti korkeapaineen viileämmällä sivulla; itä - koillistuulia. Tämän takia sää lämpenee hitaasti, mutta viimeistään viikonloppuna on mahdollisuuksia yli +15 asteen päivälämpötiloihin. Samalla säilyy silti riski iltapäiväkuuroille monena päivänä etenkin sisämaassa ja öisin on edelleen hallanvaara pilvisyyden mukaan vaihdellen. Ensi viikolla saattaa olla mahdollisuus kunnollisen kesäsään paluuseen; yli +20 asteen päivälämpötiloja ja hallanvaara poistuu...

Kasvukauden eteneminen on ollut tässä viileässä säässä hyvin hidasta. Yhtäältä se on ollut hyvä asia, koska kasvivalokuvausprojektissani on sen myötä ollut rauhallinen vaihe. Kasvukausi on edelleen viileästä säästä huolimatta noin viikon edellä tavanomaisesta aikataulusta; tuomi (Prunus padus) ja terttuselja (Sambucus racemosa) kukkivat edelleen. Omenapuut (Malus domestica), balkaninhevoskastanjat (Aesculus hippocastanum) ja pihasyreenit (Syringa vulgaris) ovat aloittamassa ja osin aloittaneet kukintaansa. Näkyvissä oleva lämpeneminen voi mahdollistaa näiden aloittavien kukkijoiden täyden kukinnan jo tämän kuun aikana. Viime aikojen pakkasten koko vaikutus esim. omenasatoon jää nähtäväksi myöhemmin...



I have been lazy lately in all these internet tasks of mine and in my arboretum project, because it is every now and then good to direct ones energy elsewhere and take it easy as well. I will continue perhaps a moment or two in the same style yet, but I'll return now to tell latest information about the coming cultivation weather.

The very cool weather has been continuing up to these days, but luckily a profuse cloudiness has prevented ground frost in a part of southern Finland during the last two nights. This has happened for example around Helsinki region. Afternoon temperatures have been gotten locally near +15 C today. In the coming days a high pressure in the west and northwest will start to move over Finland slowly, but southern Finland will remain in the cooler side of the high pressure to the end of the week; easterly - northeasterly winds. Due to this the weather will warm up slowly, but there are possibilities for above +15 C afternoon temperatures at the latest during the weekend. There will remain a risk for afternoon showers, though, during many days especially in inland areas and there will further be a risk for ground frost at nights varying according to cloudiness. During the next week there might be a possibility for the return of a proper summer weather; above +20 C afternoon temperatures and the risk for ground frost will be gone...

The proceeding of the growing season has been very slow in this cool weather. In one hand that has been a good thing, because due to that there has been an easy phase in my plant photography project. The growing season is further about one week ahead of an average schedule despite the cool weather; Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) and Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) are blooming further. Apple trees (Malus domestica), Common Horse-chesnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum) and Common Lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) are starting and partly have started their blooming. The foreseen warmer weather may make the full flowerings of these started bloomers possible already during this month. The whole influence of the recent frosts for example to apple crop will remain to be seen later...

Maaliskuun 2007 Maisema - Landscape kuvasarjan otsikot on nyt laitettu paikoilleen. Tuolloin maaliskuu oli etenkin loppupuoliskoltaan ennätyksellisen lämmin. Näistä linkeistä (A B) löytyvät sääkartat olosuhteiden tarkasteluun ja tässä on Helsingin Puistolan sääaseman ko. kuukausitilasto (A). Tämäkin päivitys on osa uutta julkaisumenetelmää. Tässä on ko. kuukauden hydrologinen raportti.

Tämän hetken ja tulevista olosuhteista: Terminen kesä on siis alkanut laajasti Etelä-Suomessa (jossakin vaiheessa Helsingin Puistolan säätilaston ilmestyttyä tarkkaa päivämäärää voidaan tarkastella) ja lämpö on saanut kasvukauden erinomaiseen alkuun; eilen rusokirsikka (Prunus sargentii) oli kukinnan huipussa Espoon Tapiolassa ja tänään Hämeenlinnassa olen havainnut sittenkin tuomen (Prunus padus) aloittaneen kukinnan lämpimillä kasvupaikoilla jo tämän viikon puolella. Eilen koin Hämeenlinnassa myös vuoden ensimmäisen ukkosen. Se oli kuitenkin heikko (muutama jyrähdys parissa tunnissa) ja se sijaitsi lähimmillään muutamia kilometrejä etelään Hämeenlinnan keskustasta; ko. paikalla satoi uutisten mukaan rakeitakin.

Tänään on tämän lämpöaallon viimeinen kesäisen lämmin päivä edelleen mahdollisten sisämaan ukkosten kera. Alkuviikolla pohjoistuuli tuo niin kylmää ilmaa, että maanantain ja tiistain välinen yö on etenkin sisämaassa hallayö ja tiistaina päivälämpötilakin voi jäädä vain vähän päälle +10 asteeseen. Näyttää kuitenkin siltä, että heti tiistain jälkeen lämpenee taas sen verran lännestä käsin, että hallanvaara ainakin lievenee (vaihteleva pilvisyyskin vaikuttaa siihen) ja päivälämpötilat voivat nousta +15 asteen tienoille. Sadekuuroja voi tulla silti useana päivänä ensi viikolla. Maa säilyy paikoin edelleen turhan kuivana siitä huolimatta myös ensi viikolla. Tuo alkuviikon halla ei huolestuta minua, koska esim. viime ja etenkin toissa keväänä paljon pahemmat hallatilanteet eivät olleet pahasti tuhoavia pitkälle ehtineestä kasvusta huolimatta.

This update as well is a part of the new publishing method. Here is the hydrological report of the month in question.

About this moment's and future's circumstances: So, the thermal summer has started widely in southern Finland (at some point the precise date can be observed as the weather chart of Puistola, Helsinki has been published) and the warmth has made the growing season into an excellent start; yesterday Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii) was in full bloom at Tapiola, Espoo and today I have observed here in Hämeenlinna Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) to have started its flowering after all at warm localitys already in this week. Yesterday I experienced in Hämeenlinna also the first thunder of the year. However, it was weak (few rumbles in couple of hours) and it situated at the closest few kilometres south from the center of Hämeenlinna; there came hail as well on the scene in question according to the news.

Today is the last summery warm day of this wave of warm weather further with possible inland area thunderstorms. During the early week northerly winds will bring such a cold air, that the night between monday and tuesday will be groundfrosty especially in inland areas and at tuesday the afternoon temperature as well may stay only a bit above +10 C. However, it appears to be the case, that immediately after tuesday it will get warmer from the west in such a way, that the risk of groundfrost will at least become minor (variable cloudiness will have an effect to that as well) and afternoon temperatures may rise around +15 C. There may come showers during several days during the next week, though. The soil will remain locally unnecessarily dry despite of that also during the next week. That groundfrost of the early week doesn't concern me, because for example during last spring and especially during the spring before that much worse groundfrost situations weren't badly damaging despite the growth having been developed far.

Perinteinen Wapputervehdys 2008! - The traditional Wappu (The First Of May) greeting 2008!

Tässä on tämän vuoden Wapputervehdykseni! Kuvassa on idänsinililjaa (Scilla siberica) kuvattuna eilen Helsingin Kaisaniemen kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa. Kukinta oli tuossa jo selvästi loppuvaiheessa, mikä kuvastaa hyvin kasvukauden jopa noin 2 viikon etumatkaa tavanomaiseen aikatauluun verrattuna.

Tänään on viikon tähän mennessä lämpimin päivä (sisämaassa +20 astetta ylittyy monin paikoin), mutta huominen ja ylihuominen ovat päivien osalta ennakoitua vähän viileämpiä. Joka tapauksessa ainakin maanantaihin asti ilmamassa säilyy erittäin lämpimänä yölämpötilojen ollessa alimmillaan monena yönä paikoin jopa lähellä +10 astetta, kuten viime yönä täällä Helsingin seudulla.

Niinpä kasvukausi etenee edelleen erinomaisesti ja esim. rusokirsikan (Prunus sargentii) ja metsävaahteran (Acer platanoides) kukinnat huipentuvat viikonloppuna. Tuomen (Prunus padus) kukinta alkanee vasta ensi viikon puolella tämän uusimman arvioni mukaan.

Sadetta saadaan kuuroina ainakin huomenna ja ylihuomenna mahdollisesti ensimmäisten heikkojen ukkosten kera, mutta sen jälkeen sää vaikuttaa turhan kuivalta kasviviljelyn suhteen... Nyt toivotan lopuksi hyvää Vappua kaikille!

Here is my this year's Vappu (The First Of May) greeting! There is Siberian Squill (Scilla siberica) in the photo as photographed yesterday at the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki. The blooming was in there clearly at its end phase, which is illustrating well growing season's even about two weeks advance compared to an average schedule.

Today is the warmest day of the week so far (+20 C is topped in many places in inland areas), but tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will be afternoonwise a bit cooler than expected earlier. In any case the air mass will stay at least up to monday very warm, where night temperatures will be at the lowest even near +10 C locally during many nights, like last night here in Helsinki region.

Therefore the growing season will proceed further excellently and for example the flowerings of Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii) and Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) will peak at the weekend. The blooming of Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) may start only during the next week according to this new estimation of mine.

There will be precipitation at least tomorrow and the day after tomorrow as showers with possible first weak thunder, but after that the weather appears to be unnecessarily dry regarding plant cultivation... Now I wish to the end fine Vappu to all (who knows and enjoys this festivity)!

Bloggaamiseni vähennys ja ennätyksellisesti tuleva kesä - The decreasing of my blogging and the summer coming in a record breaking way

Blogikirjoittamisessani on ollut taas taukoa. Elämässäni on ollut viime aikoina muuta ja tulee olemaan (onneksi positiivista) ja olen myös miettinyt projektieni järkeistämistä edelleen. Esim. olen kokenut hankalana arboretumprojektiini liittyvien tehtävien "raportoimispakon" tänne blogiin, mikä on ollut osaltaan psykologisena esteenä tekemisilleni. Niinpä nyt päätin, että kerron vain korkeintaan kuukauden välein tärkeimpiä tehtyjä asioita. Samalla nyt koko kasvukauden ajaksi jätän pois kaikki erikoisartikkeleiden kirjoittamisen. Ainoat säännöllisesti ilmestyvät asiat ovat valokuvaamiseen liittyvät merkinnät, joita on edelleen helppo tehdä rutiinihommina. Helpottavia asioita saattaa siihenkin kuitenkin vielä tulla.

Viljelysäästä kerron myös silloin tällöin (Etelä-Suomi lähinnä elinympäristöissäni). Etenkin, jos on merkittäviä / poikkeavia tilanteita tulossa. Tällä kertaa kertomista on juuri tässä mielessä. Nyt nimittäin on alkamassa erittäin lämmin jakso, joka saattaa kestää hämmästyttävän pitkään. Tämän aiheuttaa Suomen ylle hitaasti tullut korkeapaine, joka asettuu viikonlopusta lähtien Suomen itäpuolelle ja se mahdollistaa siten ajankohtaan nähden erittäin lämpimän kaakkoistuulen. Tämä tilanne saattaa kestää koko ensi viikon ja on merkkejä siitä, että erittäin lämmin kesäsää jatkuisi myös sen jälkeen. Tilanne muistuttaa vuoden 1993 ennätyslämmintä toukokuun alkua.

Lämpötilojen osalta tämä tietää sitä, että koko ensi viikon päivälämpötilat voivat olla +20 asteen tienoilla ja ajoittain jopa selvästi sen yli. Merituuli viilentää rannikoita jonkin verran. Myös yöt lämpenevät useita asteita nollan yläpuolelle viikonlopusta lähtien ja hallanvaara poistuu. Näin terminen kesä alkaa ennätyksellisen aikaisin ensi viikon loppuun mennessä (vuorokauden keskilämpötilat yli +10 astetta vähintään 5 päivää peräkkäin). Ajoittain lännen - lounaan matalapaineet ovat ensi viikon loppuun mennessä sen verran lähellä, että tarvittavia sadekuuroja saadaan jonkin verran. Näin lämpimässä säässä on mahdollisuuksia myös vuoden ensimmäisille ukkosille, joita odotan jo kärkkäästi. Lapissa vielä säilyneet paikoin jopa n. metrin mittaiset lumihanget sulavat sinnekin tulevan lämmön ansiosta ensi viikolla erittäin nopeasti aiheuttaen vakavia tulvatilanteita.

Kasvukauden suhteen tämä merkitsee kasvun nopeutumista tuon vuoden 1993 kaltaiseen ennätyksellisen varhaiseen vaiheeseen toukokuun alun mittaan. Näin ollen ensi viikolla esim. koivujen (Betula sp.), metsävaahteran (Acer platanoides) ja rusokirsikan (Prunus sargentii) kukinnat etenevät erittäin nopeasti huippuunsa. Jopa tuomen (Prunus padus) kukinnan alkua voi odotella jo ensi viikon lopussa lämpimillä kasvupaikoilla. Voi hyvin myös olla, että jo ennen Vappua ensimmäisiä nurmikoita leikataan lämpimillä paikoilla ennätyksellisen varhain. Tämän lämmön takia kasvivalokuvausprojektissani on nyt tulossa poikkeuksellisen haasteellinen vaihe. Tälläiseenkin ilmastonmuutos on meitä viemässä yhä selvemmin.



There has been a pause again in my blog writing. There have been other things in my life recently and will be (luckily positive things) and I have also pondered a further rationalization of my projects. For example I have been experiencing difficulty in the "must to report" in this blog the tasks associating my arboretum project, which has been partly as a psychological barrier against my doings. Therefore I decided now, that at the most I will tell only in monthly intervalls the most important done matters. At the same time now for the whole growing season I will leave the writing of all special articles away. The only regularly published matters will be the posts associating the photography, which are further easy to do in a routine way. However, there might be coming releafing matters to that as well yet.

I will tell about cultivation weather as well every now and then (southern Finland mainly in my life regions). Especially in the cases, where there are coming significant / unusual situations. At this time there are things to tell about just in this regard. Namely, now there are starting a very warm period, which might be lasting for an astonishingly long time. This is caused by the high pressure moved slowly over Finland. It will settle to the eastern side of Finland from the weekend onwards and it will therefore make possible an unusually warm southeasterly wind considering the time of the year. This situation might be lasting the whole next week and there are signs, that a very warm summer weather would continue after that as well. The situation is resembling the record warm early May in 1993.

Regarding temperatures this will mean the fact, that during all next week afternoon temperatures may be around +20 C and occasionally even clearly above it. By the coastal regions a sea breeze will have somewhat a cooling effect. The nights as well will warm several degrees above zero C from the weekend onwards and the risk of ground frost will go away. This way the thermal summer will start record early until the end of next week (daily average temperatures above +10 C for at least 5 days in the row). Occasionally low pressures of the west - southwest will be near in such a way until the end of next week, that needed showers will appear in some amounts. In this warm weather there will be a possibility for the first thunderstorms of the year as well, which I am waiting eagerly already. In Lapland, thanks to the warmth arriving there as well, yet remained locally even about 1 meter thick snowcovers will melt very fast during next week causing serious flood situations.

Regarding the growing season this will mean during the early May a fastening of the growth into a record early phase resembling that year 1993. In this case during next week that will mean flowerings of for example Birches (Betula sp.), Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) and Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii) to be proceeded very fast into their climax. Even the start of Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) blooming can be expected in warm localitys at the end of next week already. It may well be the case as well, that already before The First Of May the first lawns will be mowed in warm places record early. Due to this warmth there will now come an unusually challenging phase in my plant photography project. The climate change is carrying us into this kind as well evermore clearly.

Uusimmat sää- ja luontoseurantakuvat ja ensi viikon lämmöstä - The newest photos of the weather and nature follow-up and about the next week's warmth

Sää- ja luontoseurannassa on ollut tavanomaista pidempi tauko uusimpien kuvien julkaisun suhteen, mutta tässä on viimein täydennetyt huhtikuun 2008 kuvasarjat (A B C). Jakso on 8. päivästä eiliseen iltapäivään asti. Jaksolla kevään eteneminen oli ajoittain melko hidasta, mutta sateita saatiin runsaasti viime viikon aikana. Aivan jakson alussa oli tavanomaista lämpimämpää, sitten viileni selvästi viime viikon lopulla ja tällä viikolla sää on lämmennyt melko lähelle ajankohdan tyypillisiä lukemia; päivälämpötilat n. +10 astetta ja öisin pari astetta nollan molemmin puolin pilvisyyden mukaan.

Terminen kasvukausi on edennyt myös hitaasti ja katkonaisesti, mutta hyvin moni kasvilaji on jo näyttänyt kasvun merkkejä selvästi etuajassa; esim. tuomi (Prunus padus) on melkein hiirenkorvalla ja raita (Salix caprea) on täydessä kukassa lämpimillä paikoilla. Myös narsissit (Narcissus sp.) ovat aloittaneet kukinnan lämpimillä paikoilla. Nurmikot ovat jo lähes kauttaaltaan vihreitä, mutta eivät aivan vielä leikattavassa kunnossa.

Viikonloppuna sää ei siis vielä lämpene, mutta ensi viikolla näyttää siltä, että lännestä olisi vähitellen asettumassa korkeapaine Etelä-Suomen ylle ja eteläpuolelle, joka mahdollistaisi sään lämpenemisen hitaasti; ensi viikon puolivälin tienoilla voi sisämaassa olla mahdollisuus yli +15 asteen lämpötiloihin. Yöt ovat vielä selkeän sään tilanteissa ainakin hallaöitä paikallisine yöpakkasineen etenkin sisämaassa.



There has been a longer pause than normally regarding the publishing of the newest photos in the weather and nature follow-up, but here are finally the updated photo sets of April 2008 (A B C). The period is from the 8th day up to yesterday's afternoon. During the period the proceeding of the spring was occasionally rather slow and fragmentary, but there came precipitation a lot during last week. Right at the beginning of the period it was warmer than usually, then it cooled down clearly at the latter part of the last week and this week the weather has warmed rather near to typical values of this time; afternoon temperatures about +10 C and at nights couple of degrees around zero C according to cloudiness.

The thermal growing season has been advancing also in a slow and fragmentary way, but very many plant species have already showed signs of growth clearly ahead of schedule; for example Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) is almost unfolding its leaves and Goat Willow (Salix caprea) is in full bloom at warm localitys. Daffodils (Narcissus sp.) as well have started their flowering at warm localitys. Lawns are almost entirely green already, but not just yet in a mowable condition.

So, the weather won't warm up yet during the weekend, but next week it appears, that there would be settling cradually a high pressure from the west over and to the southern side of southern Finland, which would make possible weather's warming slowly; around the mid way of the next week there may be a possibility in inland areas for above +15 C temperatures. Nights will be yet at least ground frosty (frost only near the ground's surface) with local night frosts (the whole air column is frosty) especially in inland areas.

Ennätysvarhaista kevättä seurannassa ja tulevasta viilenemisestä - A piece of record early spring in the follow-up and about a coming cool down

Sää- ja luontoseurannassa on vuorossa huhtikuun 2008 ensimmäiset kuvat. Tässä ovat linkit (A B C). Jakso on kuun alusta eiliseen iltaan asti. Jaksolla vallitsi melkein koko ajan tavanomaista lämpimämpi sää päivälämpötilojen oltua alussa jopa selvästi yli +10 astetta. Ainoastaan viime lauantai oli muista päivistä poiketen melko kolea. Jakson lopussa aurinkoiset ilmat vaihtuivat sateiseksi ja ajoittain sumuiseksi sääksi, mutta kahden viime päivän ajan niukasti Etelä-Suomeen ulottunut tavanomaista lämpimämpi ilmamassa sai yöt erityisen leudoiksi runsaan pilvisyyden auttamana; minimilämpötilat jopa yli +5 astetta.

Jakson lämpimyys sai termisen kasvukauden alkamaan jälleen ennätyksellisesti ja se näkyy nyt esim. haavan (Populus tremula), raidan (Salix caprea), koreanonnenpensaan (Forsythia ovata), sinivuokon (Hepatica nobilis) ja etelänruttojuuren (Petasites hybridus) kukinnan alkuina, terttuseljan (Sambucus racemosa), herukoiden (Ribes sp.) ja kuusamien (Lonicera sp.) hiirenkorvina. Siitepölytiedote (ei arkistoidu) kertoo, että sadesää on osaltaan laskenut siitepölyn määrää ilmassa. Osittain lepät (Alnus sp.) ovat kuitenkin jo lopettamassa kukintaa Etelä-Suomessa ja seuraava allergiavaihe - koivun (Betula sp.) kukinta - on jo ovella.

Maa on ollut kokonaan sula jo lähes kuun alusta asti, mikä on auttanut nurmikoita ennennäkemättömästi vihreään kasvuun jo näin varhain. Paikoin nurmikot olivat osittain vihreitä koko ennätysleudon talven! Jos huhtikuun lopulla tulee ensimmäinen kesäinen lämpöaalto, niin paikoin nurmikoita leikataan näiden olosuhteiden auttamana ensimmäistä kertaa niiden historiassa jo huhtikuussa... Viime vuonna se oli jo hyvin lähellä toteutumistaan, mutta nyt todella jännätään mahdollista historiallista kasvukautta! Nyt kasvukauden etumatka tavanomaiseen aikatauluun on jopa 3 - 4 viikkoa.

Viikon loppuun asti sää näyttää pysyvän epävakaisena Suomen länsi - eteläpuolella olevan hyvin laajan matalapaineen takia. Siinä on useita osakeskuksia ja yksi niistä kulkee huomiseksi Etelä-Suomeen etelästä melko runsaine sateineen. Sen heikennyttyä paikalleen uusi osakeskus (liikkuen koilliseen) syntyy Suomen eteläpuolelle torstaina ja samaan aikaan Jäämerellä näyttäisi vahvistuvan korkeapaine. Sen takia sää olisi huomisen jälkeen viilenemässä itä - koillistuulien myötä. Termisen kasvukauden etenemiseen voi sen takia tulla tauko ja sään mahdollisesti seljetessä yöpakkaset saattavat palata. Myöhäinen takatalvinen sää ei kuitenkaan näyttäisi kovin pahalta mahdollisuudelta...



It's the turn of the first photos of April 2008 in the weather and nature follow-up. Here are the links (A B C). The period is from the start of the month to the yesterday evening. There prevailed almost all the time warmer than the average weather during the period as afternoon temperatures were in the beginning even clearly above +10 C. Only last saturday was rather cold as differing from the other days. At the end of the period sunny weather changed into a rainy and occasionally foggy weather, but a warmer than the average air mass reahced narrowly into southern Finland during the last two days, made the nights especially mild as helped by the profuse cloudiness; the minimum temperatures even above +5 C.

The warmth of the period made the thermal growing season to start again in a record breaking way and it is showing now as for example beginned bloomings of European Aspen (Populus tremula), Goat Willow (Salix caprea), Early Forsythia (Forsythia ovata), Liverwort (Hepatica nobilis) and Butterbur (Petasites hybridus), unfolded leaves of Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa), Currants (Ribes sp.) and Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.). The pollen report (doesn't become archived) tells, that the rainy weather has been lowering the amount of pollen in the air. However, Alders (Alnus sp.) are partially already ending their blooming in southern Finland and the next phase of allergy - the blooming of Birch (Betula sp.) - is already at the doorsteps.

The soil has been completely melted from almost since the start of the month, which has been helping lawns to a green growth this early in a never before seen way. Locally lawns were partially green during the whole record mild winter! If there will be the first summery wave of warm weather during the latter part of April, then lawns will be mowed locally for the first time in their history already in April as helped by these circumstances... Last year that was already very close to happen, but now we are really being exited about a possible historical growing season! Now the advance of the growing season is even 3 - 4 weeks ahead of an average schedule.

The weather seems to stay unstable to the end of the week due to the very wide low pressure situated in the western - southern side of Finland. There are many subcentres in it and one of them will move from the south to southern Finland until tomorrow with its rather profuse rains. As it has been weakened at its place, there will form a new subcenter (as moving to the northeast) to southern side of Finland at thursday and at the same time there would seem to strengthen a high pressure over The Arctic Ocean. Due to that the weather would become cooler after tomorrow along with easterly - northeasterly winds. Therefore there may come a pause in the proceeding of the thermal growing season and as the weather will become possibly clearer, nightfrosts might be returning. However, a late wintry weather wouldn't appear to be that bad possibility...

Toinen peräkkäinen ennätysvarhainen kasvukauden alku! - The second record early growing season's start in the row!

Kevät on todella alkanut etenemään erinomaisella tavalla viime päivien aikana tavanomaista lämpimämmän sään ansiosta. Yllä on kuva haavan (Populus tremula) hedekukinnan alkuvaiheesta. Kuva on otettu 1.4.2008 Espoon Tapiolassa ja kukinta on edennyt tilanteesta jo täyteen vaiheeseen tällä hetkellä. Haavan kukinta (hedenorkkojen venyminen "kissavaiheesta" tuulessa lerpattaviksi pötköiksi) on aina hyvä merkki termisen kasvukauden alkamisesta. Niin myös tänä keväänä. Viime vuonna tämä vaihe oli jopa muutaman päivän aikaisemmassa ennätyslämpimän maaliskuun lopun ansiosta, mutta tänäkin vuonna kasvukausi on nyt alkanut erittäin paljon tavanomaista aikaisemmin. Jo toinen vuosi peräkkäin näin varhaisen kevään merkeissä on todella huikea ja huomiota herättävä asia!

Tutkitaanpa uudestaan termisen kasvukauden alkamisajankohdan määritelmää. Viime vuonna kirjoitin aiheesta nämä kaksi artikkelia (tämä ja 3.5.2007 otsikolla: Väärän tiedon korjaamista jälleen kerran; kasvukauden alku - Correcting false information once again; the start of the growing season), koska monilla tahoilla oli silloin epäselvyyttä ja minun tietämykseni mukaan myös virheellisiä päätelmiä asiasta. Määritelmä kuuluu; kasvukausi alkaa, kun vuorokauden keskilämpötila on ollut vähintään viisi päivää peräkkäin yli +5 astetta. Alkamispäivä on sarjan ensimmäinen päivä. Nyt laajalla alueella Etelä-Suomessa näitä yli +5 asteen päiviä on ollut peräkkäin jo 31.3. alkaen! Tulevat päivät sunnuntaihin asti näyttävät suunnilleen yhtä lämpimiltä edelleen, jolloin nyt on käymässä viime vuotta selkeämmin erittäin aikainen kasvukauden alkaminen määritelmän mukaan. Tämä on jälleen hyvä esimerkki ilmaston lämpenemisen vaikutuksista ja muutos on todella jo selvästi havaittavissa.

Kävin tänään Helsingin Kaisaniemen kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa aloittamassa tämän vuoden kasvivalokuvausprojektini (olen kuvannut kasveja tosin satunnaisesti jo helmikuussakin). Kaksi merkittävää huomiota näkyi sielläkin selvästi. Ensimmäisenä tuo kasvukauden alkamisen vaihe; kaikki tuossa viime vuoden toisessa artikkelissa olevat vertailukasvit ovat nytkin aivan samassa kasvuvaiheessa kuin ne olivat tuolloin vuosina 2006 ja 2007. Tänä vuonna äärimmäisen ennätyksellinen "talven" leutous viritti näitä varhaisimmin kasvuun lähteviä kasveja kasvun alkuun jo helmikuussa, mutta se ei ole nyt merkittävästi muuttanut kasvun vaihetta verrattuna termiseen määritelmään esim. noiden kahden edellisen vuoden valossa. Eri leppäyksilöt (Alnus sp.) tosin ovat eriaikaisemmin kukassa kuin aikaisemmin; syynä erittäin pitkäksi venynyt kukintakausi.

Toiseksi kaikki jo helmikuulta ja joka tapauksessa ennen maaliskuun lopun takatalvea kasvunsa aloittaneet lajit eivät ole kärsineet juuri ollekaan tuon takatalven jopa noin -10 asteen pakkasesta. Toki joitakin vaurioita voi vielä ilmetä viiveellä, mutta havaitsin taas monien aikaisin kasvussa olevien lajien olevan erittäin pakkasenkestäviä; kukintaansa kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa jatkavat nytkin erittäin hyvin mm. näsiä (Daphne mezereum), jääkurjenmiekka (Iris "Danfordiae"), talventähti (Eranthis hyemalis), virvalilja (Bulbocodium vernum) ja monet hiirenkorvalla olleet kuusamat (Lonicera sp.) ja mantsurianokakirsikka / prinsepia (Prinsepia sinensis) jatkavat kasvuaan terveesti. Yllättävien sääolosuhteiden aiheuttamia vaurioita ei siis tarvitse kasvien suhteen pelätä liikaa. Kasvigeeneissä on yleensä todella paljon ainesta yllättäviin tilanteisiin varautumisessa.

Tulevina päivinä sää siis suosii kasvukauden etenemistä. Tämä tietää puutarhanhoidon kannalta äärimmäisen aikaisin mm. sitä, että puiden ja pensaiden hoitoleikkaamisen hyvä ajankohta on mennyt jo umpeen kasvun alkamisen takia lepotilaa vaativien kasvien kohdalla. Tässä on taas yksi esimerkki siitä, kuinka ilmastonmuutos vaikuttaa puisto- ja puutarhatöiden ajankohtiin; perinteelliset ajankodat aikaistuvat keväällä ja myöhentyvät syksyllä. Tämä on kouriintuntuvaa todellisuutta myös tänä keväänä ja tähän sopeutuminen näyttää vaativan edelleen aivan liian paljon joissakin tapauksissa; esim. tämä puutarhamyymälä on aivan liian paljon myöhässä kevään kauppakauden aloittamisessa myös tänä vuonna. Kaikkien puutarhamyymälöiden pitäisi olla auki jo nyt, koska minäkin tarvitsen jo mm. lannoitteita ja multaa arboretumprojektiini. Lisäksi täysin sula maa mahdollistaa jo nyt kaikki istutustyöt täällä eteläisessä Suomessa ja taimia pitäisi sen takia voida ostaa helposti tästä eteenpäin kaikkialta (hallanarat kesäkukat ovat tietysti eri asia). Päivitys 5.4.2008 klo. 22:05: tänään on ollut jopa yllättävän kylmä päivä (lämpötilat koko ajan vähän alle +5 astetta), koska lännestä saapunut rintamasysteemi sateineen on edennyt ennakoitua idemmäksi ja jo eilisestä illasta lähtien rintaman edellä lounaasta levisi sumuista ja kylmää meri-ilmaa. Niinpä tällä hetkellä kasvukauden eteneminen on ollut pysähtynyt. Huomenna sää taas lämpenee, mutta seuraavina päivinä Etelä-Suomi jää etelästä ja lännestä ulottuvien matalapaineiden vaikutuksen piiriin ja etelässä - kaakossa oleva lämpimämpi ilmamassa ei pääse vaikuttamaan kunnolla. Ajoittain päivälämpötilat kohoavat kuitenkin n. +10 asteen tienoille ja runsas pilvisyys mahdollistaa sen verran leudot yöt, että kasvukauden terminen eteneminen ei ole kokonaan tauolla. Lisäksi kasvien hyödyksi on odotettavissa raikkaita kevätvesisateita.

The spring has really started to proceed in an excellent way during last few days thanks to the warmer than an average weather. Above there is a photo of the early stage male blooming of European Aspen (Populus tremula). The photo is taken at the 1st of April 2008 in the district of Tapiola in Espoo and the blooming has now proceeded from the situation already to the full phase at this moment. The blooming of European Aspen (male catkins getting longer from the "furry stage" to long tubes wailing in the wind) is always a good sign of the thermal growing season's start. The same applies to this spring as well. Last year this phase was even few days earlier thanks to the record warm end of March, but this year as well the growing season has now started very much earlier than on an average. The spring being so early already for the second year in the row, is really an astonishing and sensational matter!

Let's study again the definition of the growing season's start. Last year I wrote these two articles (this and at the 3rd of May 2007 with the headline: Väärän tiedon korjaamista jälleen kerran; kasvukauden alku - Correcting false information once again; the start of the growing season) about the matter, because in many directions there were unclear visions and according to my knowlege false conclusions as well of the issue. The definition is as follows; the growing season begins, when the daily average temperature has been at least five days in the row more than +5 C. The starting day is the first day of the series. Now in a large area of southern Finland there have been these days of more than +5 C in a row already since the 31th of March! The coming days up to sunday appear to be further approximately equally as warm, when now the start of the growing season according to the definition is happening clearer than last year. That is again a good example of the global warming's influences and the change is really noticeable already.

Today I went to the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki to start my this year's plant photography project (I have already photographed plants occasionally in February as well, though). Two significant observations came clearly on my way there as well. Firstly, that phase of the growing season's start; all comparing plants in that other last year's article are now as well precisely at the same growth stage as they were then at the years 2006 and 2007. This year the extremely record breaking mildness of the "winter" caused these plants starting their growth the earliest to begin growth already during February, but that hasn't been altered the growth's phase significantly as compared to the thermal definition in the light of those previous two years. Though, different Alder (Alnus sp.) specimens are blooming in more differing times than earlier; the reason being the blooming period stretched very long.

Secondly, all the species started their growth already in February and in any case before the late winter of the March's end haven't been suffering hardly at all from that winter's even about -10 C of frost. Surely there may appear yet some damages in delay, but I observed again many early growing plants to be very frost tolerant; amongst others Mezereon (Daphne mezereum), Danford Iris (Iris "Danfordiae"), Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), Spring Meadow Saffron (Bulbocodium vernum) are continuing their blooming very well at the botanical garden now as well and many Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.) and Cherry Princepia (Prinsepia sinensis) being unfolded their leaves are continuing their growth in a healthy way. So, regarding plants one doesn't have to worry too much damages caused by unexpected weather conditions. Plant genes have generally really much of substance in the prepairing for unexpected situations.

So, during the coming days the weather will be favourable for the proceeding of the growing season. Regarding garden maintenace this means extremely early for example the fact, that in the cases of plants requiring dormancy stage, the good period of tree and shrub maintenance cuttings had come to a close already due to the start of the growth. Here is again one example about the fact, how the climate change is affecting the times of garden and park tasks; traditional times are becoming earlier in spring and later in autumn. This is a concrete reality also during this spring and adapting to it seems to be requiring further way too much in some cases; for example this garden shop (it says in the advertisement, that the shop will open during only latter part of April) is way too late in the opening of the spring's selling season this year as well. All garden shops should be open already now, because for example I myself need already fertilizers and compost amongst others for my arboretum project. In addition the soil already completely melted is making every kinds of planting tasks possible already now here in southern Finland and therefore one should be able to buy all plants easily from now on from everywhere (frost sensitive seasonal summerflowers are of course a different matter). Shame on you for being late!

Update at the 5th of April at 10:05 PM: today it has been even a surprisingly cold day (temperatures all the time a bit under +5 C), because the frontal system arrived from the west with its rains has proceeded more eastwards than forecasted and already since the yesterday evening there spreaded foggy and cold marine air mass from the southwest in the foreside of the front. Therefore at this moment the growing season's advancing has come to a standstill. Tomorrow the weather will warm up again, but during coming days southern Finland will remain within the influence of low pressures reaching from the south and west and the warmer air mass in the south - southeast doesn't have a proper change to influence. However, afternoon temperatures will reach occasionally about +10 C and the profuse cloudiness will make nights so much mild, that the thermal advancing of the growing season isn't completely paused. In addition there are expected fresh spring rains to favour of plants.

Ennätysaikaista leppien ja pähkinäpensaan kukintaa! - A record early blooming of Alders and Hazel!

Nyt se sitten on tapahtunut! Ennätyksellisen aikainen kotoperäinen leppien (Alnus sp.) kukinnan alku Etelä-Suomessa. Helsingin Sanomat kirjoittaa tästä ja uusimmassa siitepölytiedotteessa (huomaa, tämä ei arkistoidu) se näkyy hyvin. Itse muistan helmikuista kotimaisten leppien kukintaa aikaisemmin vain vuoden 1990 helmikuussa, jolloin oli myös erittäin leutoa. Nyt tilanne on se, että koko "talvi" on ollut käytännössä erittäin leuto. Tuolloin talvella 1989 - 90 marras- ja joulukuussa oli vähän aikaa kovia pakkasia ja paljon lunta. Viime vuonna kylmä helmikuu esti vielä leppien kukintaa silloin muutoin erittäin leudoista olosuhteista huolimatta, mutta sitten niiden kukinta eteni nopeasti maaliskuun lopussa ennätyslämmön ansiosta.

Kuten arvelin, niin ensimmäiset kasvutapahtumat ovat nyt lähteneet käyntiin, mutta termisen määritelmän mukaan kasvukausi ei ole vielä alkamassa. Vaadittavia yli +5 asteen vuorokausikeskilämpöja ei erittäin leudosta säästä (lämpötilat tulevina päivinä ajoittain jopa +5 asteen tienoilla ainakin etelä - lounaisrannikolla) huolimatta vielä saavuteta. Kaikkein varhaisimmilla kasvutapahtumilla on silti taipumus lähteä kehittymään hitaasti ennen sitä, jos on ollut riittävän monta päivää pari astetta yli nollan olevia vuorokausikeskilämpötiloja, päivän pituus on alkanut selvästi kasvaa (kasvien lepotilat ovat purkautuneet) ja maa on ollut enimmäkseen sula. Tässä tammi - helmikuussa kaikki tämä on täyttynyt hyvin. Asiaa on auttanut sekin, kun lämpötilat ovat olleet pilvisen sään ansiosta hyvin samoja (yli nollan) ympäri vuorokauden.

Tämä erikoinen tilanne huokuttaa minua aloittamaan jo tänä viikonloppuna tämän vuoden kasvivalokuvausprojektin. Tarjolla on siis jo harmaalepän (Alnus incana) lisäksi euroopanpähkinäpensaan (Corylus avellana) kukinnan alkua ja varhaisia sipulikasveja on noussut maasta, joka alkaa olla taas kokonaan sula täällä etelärannikolla. Tervaleppä (Alnus glutinosa) kukkii vähän myöhemmin, mutta silläkin muodostuu tulevien säiden perusteella kukintaa tässä kuussa. Tähän aikaan vuodesta tällaisia kasvutilanteita olisi saatava ikuistettua merkkeinä ilmastonmuutoksen tuomista yleistyvistä vaikutuksista. Palaan asiaan...



Now it has happened, then! A record early start of native Alder (Alnus sp.) blooming in southern Finland. Helsingin Sanomat paper writes about this (this news is found only in finnish) and it is well seen in the newest pollen report (Note, this doesn't become archived - Note, the english text isn't updated yet as compared to the finnish text). I remember myself a February blooming of native Alders earlier only in February 1990, when it was also very mild. Now the situation is, that the whole "winter" has been very mild in practice. Then in the winter 1989 - 90 during November - December there was severe frost and a lot of snow for a short time. Last year cold February prevented yet the blooming of Alders at that time despite otherwise very mild circumstances, but then their blooming proceeded fast in the latter part of March thanks to the record warmth.

As I suspected, the first growing situations have now started to go, but according to the thermal definition (at least 5 days of over +5 C daily mean temperatures), the growing season won't be starting yet. Required above +5 C temperatures aren't reached yet, despite the very mild weather (temperatures occasionally even around +5 C at least by the southern - southwestern coast during coming days). Though, the earliest growing situations of all have a tendency to start developing slowly before that, if there have been several enough days of couple of degrees over zero C daily mean temperatures, the length of the day has clearly started to become longer (dormancy stages of plants have been overruled) and the soil have been mostly unfrozen. Here at January - February all this has been realized well. The matter has been helped also by the fact, that temperatures have been very same (above zero C) all day round thanks to the cloudy weather.

This peculiar situation is tempting me to start this year's plant photography project already during this weekend. So, there is already on offer in addition to Grey Alder (Alnus incana) a start of Hazel (Corylus avellana) blooming and early bulbous plants have been coming out of the ground, which is starting to be completely unfrozen again here by the southern coast. Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa) blooms a bit later, but it as well will be forming blooming during this month according to the coming weather. These kinds of growing situations at this time of the year should be perpetuated as signs of climate change's influences becoming more common. I will return to the matter...
