Toukokuun 2007 kasvikuvia ja erittäin kylmän sään pitkittyminen - Plant photos of May 2007 and prolonging of the very cold weather

Nyt aloitan toukokuun 2007 kasvivalokuvien julkaisun. Tuolloin kuun ensimmäisellä viikolla (18) kasvukausi oli tavanomaista tilannetta edellä 1 - 2 viikkoa, vaikka ko. hetkellä vallitsi kylmä sää.

Tässä vaiheessa mainitsen meneillään olevasta säästä. Se on ollut viikon alusta asti ajankohtaan nähden hyvin kylmä ja samanlaisena sää näyttää jatkuvan jopa pitkälle ensi viikkoon asti. Näin on muodostumassa erittäin pitkän ajan jälkeen ensimmäinen näin paljon tavanomaisesta kylmään suuntaan poikkeava sääjakso. Sitä ylläpitää tilanne, jossa matalapaineet ovat sijoittuneet Suomen etelä- ja itäpuolelle ja lännessä - luoteessa on korkeapaine; pitkään jatkuvia pohjois- ja koillistuulia.

Kasviviljelyn kannalta tilanne on ollut hyvin hankala, koska tavanomaista paljon pidemälle edennyt kasvukausi on mahdollistanut arkojen lajien altistumisen tämän vaiheen yöpakkasille. Tuhoja on jo tullut ympäri Etelä-Suomea etenkin sisämaassa, mutta en ole vielä käynyt katsomassa taimistollani tilannetta. Jatkossakin päivälämpötilat ovat korkeintaan pari astetta yli +10 asteen ja ajoittain kuurosateissa päivälämpötilat voivat tämän päivän tapaan pudota hetkeksi jopa alle +5 asteen; jopa Etelä-Suomessa on havaittu räntä- ja raekuuroja. Kolmen edellisen yön sijaan näyttää kuitenkin siltä, että jatkossa runsaampi pilvisyys hillitsisi halloja ja yöpakkasta ainakin ajoittain ja lisätuhojen mahdollisuus pienenisi. Joka tapauksessa kesän paluuta (terminen kesä on kuitenkin edelleen voimassa) joudutaan odottamaan ehkä pitkään...



Now I will start the publishing of the May 2007 plant photos. Then in the first week (18) of the month the growing season was 1 - 2 weeks ahead of an average situation, allthough there prevailed a cold weather at the moment in question.

At this phase I mention about the ongoing weather. It has been from the start of the week very cold considering the time of the year and the weather appears to be continuing the same even well into the next week. This way after a very long time there is forming the first weather period differing so much from an average condition towards the cold direction. It is maintained by the situation, where low pressures are situated in the southern and eastern sides of Finland and there is a high pressure in the west - northewest; long continuing northerly - northeasterly winds.

Regarding the plant cultivation the situation has been very difficult, because the growing season proceeded much ahead of an average situation have made sensitive species vulnerable to night frosts of this phase. There have already appeared damages around southern Finland especially in inland areas, but I haven't been at my nursery yet to check out the situation. During the coming days as well afternoon temperatures will be at the most couple of degrees above +10 C and occasionally in showers afternoon temperatures may drop even under +5 C for a moment in the way of today; even in southern Finland there have been appearing sleet- and haleshowers. However, as opposed to the last three nights it appears to be the case, that a more plentifull cloudiness would dissipate frosts at least occasionally and the possibility for additional damages would be decreasing. In any case we have to wait the return of the summer (however, the thermal summer is further entact) perhaps for a long time...

Kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvien julkaisu etenee nyt toukokuun 2006 viikkoon 20. Joukossa voi olla vielä muutama kuva, jotka ovat jo esiintyneet tässä blogissa tuona vuonna, mutta melkein kaikki kuvat ovat teille lukijoille täysin uusia. Tuolla viikolla kevään eteneminen viivästyi kylmän sään takia, mutta kasvukausi pysyi vielä melko hyvin normaalissa aikataulussa.

The publishing of my plant photography project's photos is now advancing to the week 20 of May 2006. There may be few photos among there, which have already appeared in this blog during that year, but almost all photos are completely new to you readers. During that week the advancing of spring delayed due to a cold weather, but the growing season stayed yet rather well in a normal schedule.

Kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvajulkaisussa on vuorossa toukokuun 2006 viikko 19. Tämä viikko sisältää vielä joitakin kuvia, jotka on julkaistu tässä blogissa tuona vuonna. Täysin uusien kuvien osuus on kuitenkin jo selvästi suurempi kuin edellisen viikon tapauksessa. Tuona keväänä kasvukausi oli melko lähellä tavanomaista etenemistahtiaan. Erikoisuutena kasvukauden vaiheessa oli muutaman päivän ero sisämaan (Hämeenlinna) ja etelärannikon (Helsinki) välillä; kasvukausi oli jäljessä etelärannikolla kylmän meren voimakkaan vaikutuksen takia.

It's the turn of the week 19 of May 2006 in my plant photography project's picture publishing. This week contains some photos, which have been published in this blog during that year. However, the portion of completely new photos is already clearly bigger than in the case of the previous week. During that spring the growing season was rather near an average proceeding pace. A special feature in the growing season's phase was the few day's worth of difference between the inland areas (Hämeenlinna) and the southern coast (Helsinki); the growing season was behind by the southern coast due to the strong influence of the cold sea.

Nyt on vuorossa kasvivalokuvausprojektini valokuvien julkaisu. Muutin jälleen hieman julkaisutapaa, koska tästä eteenpäin kuvien määrä per kuukausi on niin suuri. Havaitsin, että mielekkäintä on julkaista tästä eteenpäin kunkin kuukauden viikot yksi kerrallaan. Nyt on siis vuorossa toukokuun 2006 viikko 18. Seuraavana on viikko 19, 20 jne. kuukauden loppuun. Sitten jatkan vuoden 2007 toukokuusta ja edelleen vuoden 2006 kesäkuuhun jne., kuten on suunniteltu. Näin julkaisutahti tavallaan tihenee, vaikka kuukauden verran kuvia ilmestyy hitaammin. Muistutan vielä, että perennoihin palaan jossakin vaiheessa myöhemmin tänä vuonna. Tässä julkaisussa osa kuvista on jo esiintynyt tässä blogissa vuonna 2006, mutta jatkossa käytännössä mitään kuvaa ei ole aikaisemmin julkaistu missään (lukuunottamatta vuotta 2005).

Now it's the turn of a photo publish of my plant photography project. I changed again a bit the publishing method, because from here onwards the amount of the photos is so large per month. I noticed, that it is the most sensible thing to publish the weeks of every month one at the time. So, now it's the turn of the week 18 of May 2006. Following that is the week 19, the week 20 and so on to the end of the month. Then I will continue to May 2007 and further to June 2006 and so on, as it has been planned. This way the publishing cycle will become tighter, although a month's worth of photos will be published slower. I remind you yet, that I will return to the perennials at some point later during this year. In this publishing a part of the photos have already appeared in this blog in 2006, but in the future not a single photo haven't been published nowhere before in practice (not counted for the year 2005).

Kuvien julkaisu etenee tässä vaiheessa vielä ainoastaan puuvartisiin lajeihin keskittyen ja seuraavana on vuorossa toukokuu 2006...

Here is the newest published month in my plant photography project; May 2005. Almost all these photos already appeared during that year in this blog. Then from these photos started cradually evolving this project, which I will aim to continue this year as photographing more than before macro photos. The publishing of the photos will proceed yet at this phase as concentrating only to woody plants and next time it will be the turn of May 2006...

Olen taas julkaissut kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvia Flickr -sivuillani. Tällä kertaa on vuorossa huhtikuu 2007. Tein julkaisutapaan muutoksen; julkaisen jatkossa kuukausiin sisältyvät perennakuvat myöhemmin toisessa vaiheessa ja nyt keskityn ensin vain puihin, pensaisiin ja köynnöksiin. Syinä tähän ovat aikatauluttamisen, kuvien läpikäymisen ja niiden nimeämisen ongelmat. Palaan perennakuviin jossain vaiheessa...

I have published again photos of my plant photography project on my Flickr pages. This time it's the turn of April 2007. I made a change to the publishing method; in the future I will publish the perennial photos included in the months later in a second phase and now I will concentrate at first only to trees, shrubs and climbers. Reasons for this are problems in making schedules, getting through the photos and naming them. I will return to the perennial photos at some point...

Ennätysaikaista leppien ja pähkinäpensaan kukintaa! - A record early blooming of Alders and Hazel!

Nyt se sitten on tapahtunut! Ennätyksellisen aikainen kotoperäinen leppien (Alnus sp.) kukinnan alku Etelä-Suomessa. Helsingin Sanomat kirjoittaa tästä ja uusimmassa siitepölytiedotteessa (huomaa, tämä ei arkistoidu) se näkyy hyvin. Itse muistan helmikuista kotimaisten leppien kukintaa aikaisemmin vain vuoden 1990 helmikuussa, jolloin oli myös erittäin leutoa. Nyt tilanne on se, että koko "talvi" on ollut käytännössä erittäin leuto. Tuolloin talvella 1989 - 90 marras- ja joulukuussa oli vähän aikaa kovia pakkasia ja paljon lunta. Viime vuonna kylmä helmikuu esti vielä leppien kukintaa silloin muutoin erittäin leudoista olosuhteista huolimatta, mutta sitten niiden kukinta eteni nopeasti maaliskuun lopussa ennätyslämmön ansiosta.

Kuten arvelin, niin ensimmäiset kasvutapahtumat ovat nyt lähteneet käyntiin, mutta termisen määritelmän mukaan kasvukausi ei ole vielä alkamassa. Vaadittavia yli +5 asteen vuorokausikeskilämpöja ei erittäin leudosta säästä (lämpötilat tulevina päivinä ajoittain jopa +5 asteen tienoilla ainakin etelä - lounaisrannikolla) huolimatta vielä saavuteta. Kaikkein varhaisimmilla kasvutapahtumilla on silti taipumus lähteä kehittymään hitaasti ennen sitä, jos on ollut riittävän monta päivää pari astetta yli nollan olevia vuorokausikeskilämpötiloja, päivän pituus on alkanut selvästi kasvaa (kasvien lepotilat ovat purkautuneet) ja maa on ollut enimmäkseen sula. Tässä tammi - helmikuussa kaikki tämä on täyttynyt hyvin. Asiaa on auttanut sekin, kun lämpötilat ovat olleet pilvisen sään ansiosta hyvin samoja (yli nollan) ympäri vuorokauden.

Tämä erikoinen tilanne huokuttaa minua aloittamaan jo tänä viikonloppuna tämän vuoden kasvivalokuvausprojektin. Tarjolla on siis jo harmaalepän (Alnus incana) lisäksi euroopanpähkinäpensaan (Corylus avellana) kukinnan alkua ja varhaisia sipulikasveja on noussut maasta, joka alkaa olla taas kokonaan sula täällä etelärannikolla. Tervaleppä (Alnus glutinosa) kukkii vähän myöhemmin, mutta silläkin muodostuu tulevien säiden perusteella kukintaa tässä kuussa. Tähän aikaan vuodesta tällaisia kasvutilanteita olisi saatava ikuistettua merkkeinä ilmastonmuutoksen tuomista yleistyvistä vaikutuksista. Palaan asiaan...



Now it has happened, then! A record early start of native Alder (Alnus sp.) blooming in southern Finland. Helsingin Sanomat paper writes about this (this news is found only in finnish) and it is well seen in the newest pollen report (Note, this doesn't become archived - Note, the english text isn't updated yet as compared to the finnish text). I remember myself a February blooming of native Alders earlier only in February 1990, when it was also very mild. Now the situation is, that the whole "winter" has been very mild in practice. Then in the winter 1989 - 90 during November - December there was severe frost and a lot of snow for a short time. Last year cold February prevented yet the blooming of Alders at that time despite otherwise very mild circumstances, but then their blooming proceeded fast in the latter part of March thanks to the record warmth.

As I suspected, the first growing situations have now started to go, but according to the thermal definition (at least 5 days of over +5 C daily mean temperatures), the growing season won't be starting yet. Required above +5 C temperatures aren't reached yet, despite the very mild weather (temperatures occasionally even around +5 C at least by the southern - southwestern coast during coming days). Though, the earliest growing situations of all have a tendency to start developing slowly before that, if there have been several enough days of couple of degrees over zero C daily mean temperatures, the length of the day has clearly started to become longer (dormancy stages of plants have been overruled) and the soil have been mostly unfrozen. Here at January - February all this has been realized well. The matter has been helped also by the fact, that temperatures have been very same (above zero C) all day round thanks to the cloudy weather.

This peculiar situation is tempting me to start this year's plant photography project already during this weekend. So, there is already on offer in addition to Grey Alder (Alnus incana) a start of Hazel (Corylus avellana) blooming and early bulbous plants have been coming out of the ground, which is starting to be completely unfrozen again here by the southern coast. Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa) blooms a bit later, but it as well will be forming blooming during this month according to the coming weather. These kinds of growing situations at this time of the year should be perpetuated as signs of climate change's influences becoming more common. I will return to the matter...

Nyt on taas kasvivalokuvausprojektini julkaisun aika. Julkaistava kuukausi on huhtikuu 2006, jolloin kasvukauden alkaminen oli viime kevättä noin kuukauden jäljessä. Siinä olevat kuvat ovat suurimmaksi osaksi tuttuja jo tästä blogista, kun pyrin julkaisemaan silloin keväällä 2006 näitä kuvia tässä mediassa. Pian kuitenkin havaitsin sen riittämättömäksi ja aloitin pohtimaan tätä kuvausprojektia eteenpäin Flickr:ssä. Tässä on linkki huhtikuun 2006 kuviin.

It is time again for the publish of my plant photography project. The month to be published is April 2006, when the start of the growing season was about a month late as compared to the last spring. The photos in there are already familiar from this blog for the most part, as I intended to publish then in the spring 2006 these photos in this media. However, I soon noticed that to be insufficient and I started to ponder this photography project foward in Flickr. Here is the link to the photos of April 2006.

Kasvivalokuvausprojektin julkaisu alkaa - The publishing of the plant photography project starts

Nyt aloitan vihdoin kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvien julkaisun! Tässä kerron siitä, miten julkaisu tapahtuu ja minkälaisia kuvia tulette näkemään. Muistutan taas tässä vaiheessa, että kuvien julkaisutahti saattaa olla hidas. Joka tapauksessa tästä alkaa Vihervuosi omalta osaltani netissä.

Järjestän kuvat siten, että ne ovat kuukausittain kokoelmissa ja nämä kokoelmat sisältävät kuvasarjoja viikoittain nimettynä. Kuvat ovat ottojärjestyksessä jokaisen viikon sisällä. Kuvia on tällä hetkellä kolmelta vuodelta (2005 - 2007). Julkaisen kuvat aikajärjestyksessä siten, että julkaisuvuorossa on vuorotellen joka vuoden sama kuukausi kasvukauden alusta alkaen; esim. toukokuu 2005, toukokuu 2006, toukokuu 2007, kesäkuu 2005, kesäkuu 2006, kesäkuu 2007 jne. Vuodelta 2005 ei ole maalis- ja huhtikuuta ja vuodelta 2006 ei ole maaliskuuta. Tämän takia julkaisu alkaa maaliskuusta 2007 ja jatkuu vuosien 2006 ja 2007 huhtikuihin. Tällä metodilla jokaisen vuoden suunnilleen samat kasvukauden vaiheet ovat nätisti vierekkäin Flickr -sivuillani ja eri vuodet vertailtavissa.

Tänä vuonna keskityn tähän julkaisuun, mutta jatkossa suunnitelmissani on tuoda kuviin analyysiä. Siinä tuon mm. esille kasvukauden tehoisan lämpösumman ja kasvutilanteiden välisen riippuvuuden. Sitä varten olen ottanut erittäin paljon kuvia joka lajin mahdollisimman monista kasvutilanteista koko kasvukauden ajan (se vaatii vielä paikkauskuvaamista joidenkin lajien osalta). Kuvien (niissä olevien kasvien) taiteellista analyysiä aion tehdä ja julkaista monista eri näkökulmista vuosien mittaan. Tuon kasveja esille myös erilaisilla kuvallisilla teemoilla ja jo tänä vuonna aion aloittaa uuden valokuvablogin siihen liittyen. Kaikki nämä kuvat ovat koko urani aikana myös puutarhataiteellisten tutkimusteni ja näkemysteni työvälineitä ja niiden julkisuus toimii eri asioiden yhteydessä esteettisesti monipuolisen ja rikkaan uuden ajan kasvillisuudenkäytön propaganda tyylisenä esityksenä.

Teille katselijoille kuvien tarkoitus on olla sekä informatiivisia kasvitieteen kappaleita että taiteellisia elämyksiä. Niinpä olen ottanut kuvia molemmista näkökulmista vaihtelevasti tilanteen mukaan. Tähän mennessä kasvit ovat olleet kuvissani sekä maisemamittakaavassa että monissa erilaisissa lähikuvissa ja kaikissa mittakaavoissa siltä väliltä. Erityisenä kiinnostuksen kohteenani ovat olleet taivasta vasten kuvatut kasvit. Kaikkein lähimmät makrokuvat olen toistaiseksi jättänyt pois, koska kuvaamisen suuren määrän vuoksi niiden ottamiseen ei ole ollut aikaa; makrokuvat kasveista ovat hyvin vaikeita ottaa ja kuvaushetki on hyvin sääherkkä (tuuli).

Kasvikuvat on otettu melkein kokonaan näillä paikoilla: Kaisaniemi, Helsinki; kasvitieteellinen puutarha, Meilahti, Helsinki; arboretum Meilahti, Tapiola; Espoo ja Hämeenlinna. Yksittäisiä otoksia on myös muualta Helsingistä (Lauttasaari) ja Vantaalta. Vuosina 2005 ja 2006 kuvasin puiden, pensaiden ja köynnösten lisäksi myös perennoja (mukaan lukien sipulikasvit), mutta vuonna 2007 jätin perennat kevään jälkeen pois ohjelmasta ja keskityin vain puuvartisiin lajeihin. Olen kuvannut koko ajan lähes pelkästään viljeltyjä koristekasveja.

Jatkan kasvivalokuvaamista myös tänä vuonna, mutta en ole vielä päättänyt sen luonnetta; ainakin otan perennat takaisin kuvausohjelmaan ja lisään lähimpien makrokuvien osuutta... Jatkossa ilmoitan tässä blogissa jokaisen kuukausittaisen kuvakokoelman julkaisusta linkkeineen ko. kuviin. Tässä on ensimmäinen linkki maaliskuun 2007 kuviin. Tässä on aikaisemmin kirjoittamaani tästä aiheesta.



Now I finally start the publishing of my plant photography project's photos! In here I tell you, how the publishing will happen and what kinds of photos you will see. I remind again at this phase, that the publishing rate of the photos might be slow. In any case here starts the Green Year (this year is so called green theme year in Finland's horticulture) for my part in the net.

I will order the photos in such a way, that they will be in monthly collections and these collections will include photo sets named weekly. The photos will be in the taken order inside every week. At this moment there are photos from three years (2005 - 2007). I will publish the photos in time order in such a way, that the same month of every year will be in publish turn by turns from the beginning of the growing season; for example May 2005, May 2006, May 2007, June 2005, June 2006, June 2007 and so on. From the year 2005 there aren't March and April and from the year 2006 March. Due to this the publishing will start from March 2007 and will continue to the April's of 2006 and 2007. With this method the approximate same growth situations of every year will be neatly side by side on my Flickr pages and different years will be comparable.

During this year I will concentrate to this publishing, but in the future in my plans there is to bring an analysis to the photos. In there I will bring out amongst others the dependency between the effective temperature sum of the growing season and growing situations. For that purpose I have been taken very much photos from as many as possible growing situations of every species during all growing season (it will require yet a patching photography in the cases of some species). I will do and publish an artistical analysis of the photos (the plants in them) from many different views during coming years. I will also bring out plants with different kinds of visual themes and already this year I am aiming to start a new photo blog associating with that. During all my career all these photos will be tools for my garden artful examinations and views and their publicity will act in an association with different matters as a propaganda styled performance of the new era's esthetically varied and rich plant usage.

To you watchers the purpose of the photos is to be both as informative pieces of botany and as artful experiences. Therefore I have been taken photos from the both views variably according to a situation. Up to this point plants have been in my photos both in a landscape scale and in many kinds of closeups and in every scale between. My special point of interest have been plants photographed against the sky. I have left the closest macro photos away for the time being, because due to the great amount of photographing there hasn't been time for photographing them; macro photos from plants are very hard to capture and the photographing moment is very weather sensitive (the wind).

The plant photos are taken almost entirely at these locations: Kaisaniemi, Helsinki; the botanical garden, Meilahti, Helsinki; arboretum Meilahti, Tapiola; Espoo and Hämeenlinna. Single captures are also from elsewhere in Helsinki (Lauttasaari district) and in Vantaa. During years 2005 and 2006 I photographed in addition to trees, shrubs and climbers also perennials (including bulbous plants), but in 2007 I left the perennials away from the program after the spring and I concentrated only to woody species. I have been photographing all the time almost entirely cultivated ornamental plants.

I will continue my plant photographing also during this year, but I haven't decided yet its nature; at least I will take the perennials back in the photoshoot program and I will increase the portion of the closest macro photos... In the future I will announce the publishing of the every monthly photo collections in this blog with links to the photos in question. Here is the first link to the photos of March 2007. Vuosi 2008 käyntiin pohtimalla projekteja - The year 2008 to be started as deliberating projects

Vuosi 2007 on nyt melkein lopussa. Kokoan sen vuoksi tähän loppuvuoden tilanteista lyhyet kirjoitukset projekteihini liittyen ja mitä ensi vuonna on aikomukseni tehdä. Yleisesti minulle itselleni jäi tästä vuodesta se tyypillinen kuva, että tekemistä olisi niin paljon, mutta aikaa on aivan liian vähän käytössä. Minä olisin ensimmäisten joukossa haalimassa vuorokausiini 24 ylimääräistä tuntia. Koska se ei ole mahdollista, niin olen viime päivinä miettinyt ajankäyttöni helpottamista. Tämä on oleellista myös siksi, koska ensi vuonna tärkeä projektini on myös valmistua viimeinkin maisema-arkkitehdiksi.

En siis ehtinyt aloittaa kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvien julkaisua tämän vuoden puolella. Tuleva vuosi 2008 on ns. Vihervuosi Suomessa ja sen myötä kasvikuvieni julkaisu on hyvä aloittaa vasta vuoden 2008 alusta. Kuvien määrä tulee olemaan erittäin runsas, joten se tulee olemaan minun näyttävä panokseni Vihervuoden kunniaksi. Kuvista lisää sitten julkaisun alussa.

Blogitrilogia (Maan Povi - The Bosom Of The Earth, Maisema - Landscape, Taivaankansi - Firmament) sää- ja vuodenaikaseurantaan liittyen on ollut eniten jumissa tässä loppuvuodesta. Olen edelleen ottanut kiinnostavia kuvia trilogiaan liittyen, joita julkaisen Flickr -sivuillani. Olen kokeillut itse blogien päivittämisessä uusia helpompia menetelmiä (ei julkaistuja), mutta en ole edelleenkään tyytyväinen. Vielä menee siis aikaa, ennen kuin sen blogipäivittämisen kohtalo selviää.

Arboretumprojektini on ensi vuonna tärkeää, koska taimistossani odottaa paljon taimia istutettavaksi arboretumalueelle. Jos istutus ei lähde sujuvasti käyntiin, niin monista taimista uhkaa tulla ylisuuria ensi kesänä. Jännityksellä odotan sitä, kuinka lauhaksi sää taas tulee nyt alkavan pakkasjakson jälkeen. On siis toiveita, että ilmastonmuutosta myötäillen avautuisi mahdollisuus talvi-istutuskaudelle tämän viikon jälkeen. Käyttäisin sitä hyväkseni nyt ollessani poissa helmikuuhun asti päivätyöstäni; valoisaa aikaa olisi käytettävissä.

Säästä lopuksi, että nyt kylmeneminen on alkanut ja se näkyy etelärannikon sateissa; ne ovat muuttumassa lumeksi (kelikamerat). Jatko näyttää juuri sellaiselta kuin aikaisemmin arvioin. Tosin pakkanen ei ole niin kovaa kuin aikaisemmin näytti; Etelä-Suomen sisämaassakin jäädään -10 asteen leudommalle puolelle (joitakin itäosia lukuun ottamatta...). Lunta voi tulla parin lähipäivän aikana paikoin joitakin senttejä etenkin etelärannikon lähellä suhteellisen lämpimän meren takia. Yhä selkeämmin näyttää kuitenkin siltä, että tulevasta viikonlopusta alkaa taas erittäin leuto jakso, joka saattaa kestää hyvin pitkään. Turha olisi siis vieläkään haaveilla mistään kunnon talvesta.

The year 2007 is now allmost ended. I gather due to that short writings about situations of the year's end regarding my projects and what will be my aim to do next year. Generally there was left that typical picture for me about this year, that there would be so much to do, but there is way too little time to be used. I would be among the first ones to scrape extra 24 hours into my days. Because it isn't possible, therefore I have been thinking during last days about making my time use easier. This is essential also due to the fact, that next year an important project of mine is also to finally craduate as a landscape architect.

So, I didn't had the time to start publishing photos of my plant photography project during this year. The coming year is so called Green Year in Finland and due to that it is good to start publishing my plant photos only at the beginning of the year 2008. The amount of the photos will be very profuse, so that will be my showy contribution to the honor of the Green Year. More about the photos then at the start of the publishing.

The blog trilogy (Maan Povi - The Bosom Of The Earth, Maisema - Landscape, Taivaankansi - Firmament) associating with the weather and season observation has been stucked the most here at the end of the year. I have been taking further interesting photos associating with the trilogy, which I will publish on my Flickr pages. I have been trying new easier methods (not published) in the updating of the blogs themselves, but I'm not satisfied furthermore. So, there will pass yet time, before the fate of that blog updating will be revealed.

My arboretum project will be important next year, because there are a lot of plants waiting in my nursery to be planted onto my arboretum area. If the planting doesn't get under way well, then many of the plants will be at risk for becoming oversized during next summer. I will be waiting with strain about the fact, that how mild the weather will become after now starting frosty period. So, there are wishes, that conforming the climate change there would be opening a possibility to a winter planting season after this week. I would be taking advantage of it now as I am away from my daily work up to February; there would be daylight time to be used.

To the end about the weather, that the getting colder process has now started and it shows in the precipitiation by the southern coast; it is being turned into snow (the weather cameras). The continuation appears just the way as I estimated earlier. Though, frost won't be so hard as it appeared earlier; even in inland areas of southern Finland temperatures will remain in the milder side of -10 C (not counted for some eastern parts...). There may be coming snow some centimetres locally during next couple of days especially near the southern coast due to the relatively warm sea. However, it appears furthermore clearly the way, that from the following weekend onwards there will start again a very mild period, which might last for a very long time. So, it would be no use even now to dream about any proper winter.

Along with this I wish to my readers a happy and successful new year 2008!

Varoitus talvesta ja laiskottelua - A warning of winter and being lazy

Joulusta lähtien olen viettänyt hyvin rentoa elämää. Siksi en ole tehnyt juuri mitään esim. kasvivalokuvausprojektiini liittyen. Tällä viikolla tarkoitukseni on kuitenkin taas aktivoitua. Iloisena uutisena voin kertoa nyt, että löysin äitini tietokoneelta ne kaikki kadonneet viime maaliskuun kasvikuvat! Onneksi olen aina tajunnut sen, että tärkeitä tiedostoja kannattaa pitää ainakin kahdessa eri paikassa.

Tässä vaiheessa säätilanteeseen on ilmestynyt muutoksen merkit; ensi maanantaina talvi palaa myös etelärannikolle, kun matalapaineen jäljessä Suomen päälle vahvistuu korkeapaine ja koillistuuli tuo samalla pakkasilmaa. Ennen tätä hyvin lauha sää jatkuu ja tänään +5 astetta on ylitetty etelärannikolla, kuten tulee tapahtumaan ajoittain lauantaihin asti. Tämän ja vesisateiden auttamana maan routa on nyt sulanut kokonaan laajalta alueelta Etelä-Suomesta ja se mahdollistanut taas sen sulaviljelykauden (se tulee olemaan tyypillistä eteläisessä Suomessa mihin aikaan tahansa kesken tulevaisuuden talvien ilmastonmuutoksen myötä); esim. lepotilaisia astiataimia voi istuttaa sulaan maahan aina. Talvenaroille lajeille talvi-istutusta ei silti suositella, koska niiden on parasta saada kasvaa ja juurtua istutuksen jälkeen ennen ensimmäistä talvea.

Saa nähdä, kuinka vahvaksi ensi viikon talvisää muodostuu. Nyt näyttää siltä, että ainakin eteläisen Suomen sisämaassa ja etenkin idässä pakkanen voi kiristyä -10 asteen kylmemmälle puolelle jo tiistaina. Korkeapaine siirtyy kuitenkin jo keskiviikkona Suomen itäpuolelle ja tuulet kääntyvät sen myötä kaakkoon. Siksi pakkanen ei enää kovene ja voi olla, että pohjoisen Atlantin voimakas matalapainetoiminta saa tuulet kääntymään loppuviikkoon mennessä taas enemmän leutoon etelän ja lounaan suuntaan. Koska luntakaan ei tule kylmenemisen mukana paljoa (paitsi mahdollisesti etelärannikolla kaakkoistuulivaiheessa sulan meren takia), niin tämä uusi talvi saattaa siis edelleen olla vain tilapäinen. Toisaalta Atlantin matalapaineet saattavat tuoda sopivan tilanteen vallitessa lauhan ilman edellä runsaasti lunta...



I have been spending a very easy living since Christmas. Therefore I haven't done hardly anything for example regarding my plant photography project. However, during this week my aim is to be activated again. As a glad news I can tell now, that I found all those missing plant photos of last March from my mother's computer! Fortunately I have always been gotten the fact, that it is worth keeping important files at least in two different places.

At this phase there has been emerged signs of change into the weather situation; next monday winter will return also to the southern coast, as there will be strengthening a high pressure over Finland after a low pressure and a northeasterly wind will bring frosty air at the same time. Before this the very mild weather will continue and today +5 C was topped by the southern coast, like it will be happening occasionally up to saturday. As helped by this and rains the soil frost of the ground has now melted completely from a large area of southern Finland and it has been made possible that unfrozen cultivation season (it will become typical in southern Finland at any time during future winters due to the climate change); for example container plants in the dormancy stage can be planted always to an unfrozen ground. Though, winter planting isn't recommended for the winter sensitive species, because it is best for them to be able to grow and root after the planting before the first winter.

It remains to be seen, how strong the next week's winter weather will form. Now it appears the way, that at least in southern Finland's inland and especially in the east frost might be hardening to the colder side than -10 C allready at tuesday. However the high pressure will be moving to the eastern side of Finland allready at wednesday and winds will be turning to the southeast due to that. Therefore frost won't become harder anymore and it may be, that a strong low pressure activity of the northern Atlantic will cause winds to turn again more into a mild southerly - southwesterly direction until the weekend. Because there won't come much snow either along with the colder weather (except possibly by the southern coast during the southeasterly wind phase due to the unfrozen sea), so therefore this new winter might be further just a temporary one. On the other hand the Atlantic low pressures might bring a lot of snow along the foreside of a mild air as a suitable condition prevails...

Kuvajulkaisun viivästymistä ja lumettoman Joulun odotusta - A delaying of the photo publish and waiting for snowless Christmas

Kasvivalokuvausprojektin uusien kuvien julkaisu on tällä hetkellä vähän viivästymässä, koska kohtasin odottamattoman ongelman; viime maaliskuun lopussa ottamiani kasvikuvia on kadoksissa ja olen etsinyt niitä vielä niitä löytämättä. Kummallista! No, tilanne kattaa vain n. yhden viikon verran kuvia. Siksi niiden puuttuminen ei ehkä lopulta haittaa kokonaisuutta ja voin kuvata ne ensi keväänä uudestaan. Harmillista tosin on se, että ne maaliskuun kuvat näyttivät ennätyksellisen aikaista kasvukauden alkua. Tällaista tämä voi olla, jos projekti sisältää yli 10 000 kuvaa ja vaikka ne olisivat missä järjestyksessä tahansa...

Olen kuitenkin jo valmistellut kuvien julkaisua Flickr -sivuillani muodostamalla kuvasarjoja ja -kokoelmia. Samalla olen piilottanut vuoden 2005 jo esillä olleita kasvikuvia, koska ne tulevat esille muiden kanssa uudenlaisella systeemillä. Siinä on vielä vähän hiomista, mutta toivottavasti jo ennen Joulua löytyy aikaa julkaisun aloittamiselle.

Lopuksi säästä. Samanlainen säätila on jatkunut jo monta päivää; vahva korkeapaine on ollut Suomen lounaispuolella ja se on kierrättänyt melko lauhaa ilmaa lännestä eteläiseen Suomeen ja Lappiin ajoittain jopa erittäin leutoa ilmaa; lämpötilat siellä jopa yli +5 astetta. Etelä-Suomessa on ollut sateetonta ja viime viikon yhden reilumman pakkaspäivän (lämpötilat -5 ja -10 asteen välillä) jälkeen lämpötilat ovat olleet nollan tienoilla. Sen takia muutamia senttejä jäätynyt lumeton maa ei ole jaksanut juuri sulaa ja sama koskee pienissä järvissä olevaa ohutta jääpeitettä.

Loppuviikolla lämpötilat ovat enimmäkseen nollan yläpuolella sateettomassa säässä (lauantain - sunnuntain aikana on heikkoa pakkasta korkeapaineen selänteessä) ja Joulun tienoille sattuu ehkä entistäkin lauhempaa ilmaa vesisateiden ja voimakkaan tuulen kanssa. Maan routa ja järvijäät saattavat sulaa silloin vauhdilla paikoin jopa kokonaan. Eli tiedossa on lumeton Joulu erittäin laajalla alueella jopa Keski-Suomea myöten. Kaikkea tätä ennen Lappiin on tulossa huomenna vaarallisen voimakas myrsky ja etelässäkin tuulee voimakkaasti lännestä - luoteesta. Tilanteessa vallitsee Föhntuuli, joka voi nostaa lämpötilaa yllättävänkin korkealle...



The publishing of the new plant photography photos is at this moment a bit delaying, because I was faced with an unexpected problem; the plant photos I took at the end of last March are missing and I have been searching them without them being found yet. Odd! Well, the situation contains only about one week's worth of photos. Therefore them being missing doesn't propably cause any harm to the whole picture at the end of the day and I can re-photograph them during the next spring. Though, it is harmfull, that those March photos illustrated the rocord early start of the growing season. It can be like this, when the project contains more than 10 000 photos and despite them being in no matter what order...

However, I have allready been preparing the publishing of the photos on my Flickr pages as forming photo sets and collections. At the same time I have hidden photos of the year 2005, which were allready on display, because they will be coming on display along with the other photos with a new kind of system. There is yet a bit to be finished, but hopefully there will be found time allready before Christmas for the publishing to be started.

To the end about the weather. The same kind of weather situation has been continuing for several days; there has been a strong high pressure in the southwestern side of Finland and it has been circulating rather mild air into southern Finland from the west and into Lapland occasionally even very mild air; temperatures even over +5 C over there. There hasn't been precipitation in southern Finland and since last week's one rather frosty day (temperatures between -5 C and -10 C) temperatures have been around zero C. Therefore the snowless soil freezed for few centimetres hasn't been able to melt hardly at all and the same goes for thin ice layers on small lakes.

During the latter part of the week temperatures will be mostly above zero C in a rainless weather (during saturday - sunday there will be weak frost in a ridge of high pressure) and around Christmas there will be happening perhaps even milder weather than before with rain and hard winds. Then the soil frost and the lake ice might melt fast even completely locally. In other words Christmas will be snowless in a very large area even up to central Finland. Before all this there will be coming tomorrow a dangerously strong storm into Lapland and there will be a strong westerly - northwesterly wind also in southern Finland. There prevails a Föhn wind in the situation, which might cause temperatures to rise even surprisingly high...

Kasvitieteellisestä puutarhasta juhlaan - From the botanical garden to the party

Tänään kävin Helsingin Kaisaniemen kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa viimeisen kerran tämän vuoden kasvivalokuvausprojektiani koskien. Siellä on yllättävän paljon lehtiä jäljellä joissakin lajeissa ja hedelmät ovat tietenkin oleellinen osa tämän vuodenajan kasviestetiikkaa. Hyvin leuto loppuvuosi vain heikkoine pakkasineen on vaikuttanut erittäin viivyttävästi moniin lajeihin. Eniten lehtiä on nyt mm. kastanjaköynnöksessä (Akebia quinata), köynnösruusuissa (Rosa sp.) ja karhunvatukassa (Rubus fruticosus). Ensin mainitun lehdet ovat vain hyvin vähän pakkasen vaurioittamia. Näyttävimmät tapahtumat ovat tällä hetkellä amerikantaikapähkinän (Hamamelis virginiana) kukinta ja laavapihlajan (Sorbus alnifolia) kirkkaanpunaisina säilyneet runsaat marjat. Nämä tilanteet kestävät tyypillisesti pitkään tässä vaiheessa, joten niistä on iloa Jouluna ja Uutenavuotenakin.

Tämän illan - yön vietän Helsingin seudun bloggaajien Pikkujoulussa, mutta ehkä jo huomenna juhlista selvittyäni tarkoituksenani on viimein alkaa puuhaamaan kasvivalokuvausprojektini kuvien julkaisua... Ei muuta tällä erää.



Today I visited last time at the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki regarding this year's plant photography project of mine. There was surprisingly much of leaves left on some species over there and fruits are of course a significant part of the plant esthetics at this season. The very mild latter part of the year with its only weak frosts has influenced very much in a delaying way to many species. There are leaves the most now for example on Fiveleaf Akebia (Akebia quinata) climber Roses (Rosa sp.) and Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus). The leaves of the firstly mentioned one are only very little harmed by the frosts. The most showy happenings are at this time the blooming of American Witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) and Korean Mountain Ash's (Sorbus alnifolia) profuse berries remained brightly red. These conditions will last typically for a long time at this phase, so therefore they will display joy at Christmas and at the New Year as well.

I will be spending this evening - night at the Helsinki region blogger's Pre Christmas party, but maybe allready tomorrow as I have recovered from the party, my aim is finally to start making the publishing of my plant photography project's photos... That was all this time.

Tilannetiedotuksia - Reports of the situation

Kasvukauden päättyminen tietää tästä lähtien muutoksia toimiini ja samalla on alkamassa taas uusi vaihe bloggaamisessani.

Huomenna menen tämän vuoden osalta viimeisen kerran Helsingin Kaisaniemen kasvitieteelliseen puutarhaan tekemään kasvivalokuvausprojektiani. Siellä on vielä yksittäisillä lajeilla lehtiä jäljellä. Valokuvaaminen vähenee tämän jälkeen ja voin alkaa valmistautumaan kasvivalokuvieni julkaisuun. Ensi vuonna puiden ja pensaiden osalta teen vielä ns. paikkaavaa valokuvausta ja harkitsen perennoiden ottamista tarkempaan kuvausohjelmaan.

Blogitrilogiani on joutunut edelleen mietinnän alle. Edelleen jatkuvan valokuvausinnostukseni vuoksi valokuvamateriaalia on syntynyt runsaasti. Niinpä se on aiheuttanut ongelmia blogieni päivityksiin. Tuon edelleen Flickr -sivuilleni uusia kuvia reaaliajassa, mutta blogit ovat nyt vähän aikaa päivittymättä ratkaistessani niille helpommin päivitettävän muodon. Tulen laittamaan myöhemmin kuviani myös eri Flickr -ryhmiin.

Vanhojen merkintöjen kielenkääntö tässä blogissa tapahtuu jossakin vaiheessa talvella. Pidän silloin pitkän tauon kaikesta muusta bloggaamisesta ko. työn ajan. Päivitystahtini on talven ajan hitaampi muutenkin kuin aikaisemmin, mutta tarvittaessa teen edelleen mm. sääraportteja. Siirrän painoa idealististen - kriittisten kirjoitusten tekoon; sekä uusia aiheita että niitä, jotka jäivät kesken viime keväänä - alkukesällä. Kasvikuvajulkaisuihin liittyviä asioita laitan tänne jo tämän vuoden puolella.

Arboretumprojektissani on tiedossa vielä tämän vuoden aikana siementen esikäsittelyyn laittoa ja torjunta-ainekäsittelyjä. Niistä seuraa ajallaan mainintoja.

Päivitys 18.11.2007 klo. 18:05: Kävin Kaisaniemen kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa valokuvaamassa vasta tänään, kun eilinen meni sen verran toipuessa työnantajani pikkujouluista. Kuvatessa havaitsin nyt, että vielä jopa lähes kesäasussa olivat kastanjaköynnös (Akebia quinata), silkkiviini (Periploca graeca), aitalikusteri (Ligustrum vulgare) ja hopeapensaslaji (Elaeagnus umbellata). Osa lehdistä oli vaurioutunut tämän viikon pakkasissa. Tämän lisäksi ruska oli parhaimmillaan muutamilla atsalealajeilla (Rhododendron sp.); paljon ruskehtavan oranssia - punaista. Näitä päätin käydä tarkistamassa vielä 1 - 2 kertaa loppuvuoden aikana, jotta saan selville niiden lehtien lopulliset varisemisajat ja -tyylit.



The ending of the growing season will mean changes to my activities from now on and at the same time there will start again a new phase in my blogging.

Tomorrow I will go for the last time this year to the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki to do my plant photography project. There are leaves left yet on single species. The photographing will decrease after this and I can start prepairing for the publishing of my plant photos. During next year I will do yet a so called patching up photography in the cases of trees and shrubs and I will consider taking perennials into a more precise photographing programme.

My blog trilogy is forced once again under consideration. Due to my further ongoing photography enthusiasm there has been created a lot of photo material. Therefore it has been causing problems into the updating of the blogs. I will further put new photos into my Flickr pages in real time, but the blogs are now for a while without updates as I will be resolving an easier shape of updating for them. I will put later my photos into different Flickr groups as well.

The translation of the old posts in this blog will happen at some time during the winter. I will then have a long pause from all other blogging during the work in question. My updating pace will be otherwise as well slower than earlier, but I will do further for example weather reports when needed. I will place weight into making of idealistic - critical writings; both new issues and those, which were unfinished last spring - early summer. I will place here matters associating with the plant photo publishing allready during this year.

In my arboretum project there will be yet time during this year for putting seeds into pre-treatments and making pesticide treatments. There will be mentions about them in time.

Update at the 18th of November at 6:05 PM: I visited photographing at the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki only today, because yesterday went so much recovering from the pikkujoulu (little christmas) party of my employer. During the photographing I noticed now, that species yet with even allmost full summer foliage were Five Leaf Akebia (Akebia quinata), Silk Wine (Periploca graeca), European Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) and Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata). A part of the leaves were damaged in this week's frosts. In addition to this fall colours were in their peak on some azalea species (Rhododendron sp.); a lot of brownish orange - red. I decided to check these out yet for 1 - 2 times during the end of the year, so that I will discover final shedding times and shedding styles of their leaves.

Blogien säätöä ja kielenkääntöä - Adjusting and translating the blogs

Olen nyt muokannut blogieni sivupalkeissa esittelytekstejä ja blogiprofiiliani (sama koskee Pinserin Blogilistan tietojani). Samalla tämän blogin nimi muuttui vähän. Tarkoitukseni on nyt alkaa tekemään vihdoinkin myös luokkatunnisteet kaikkiin merkintöihini. Samalla käännän englanniksi ne merkinnät, jotka ovat vielä vain suomeksi tässä blogissa. Kun olen saanut yhden kuukauden vanhat merkinnät käännettyä englanniksi, laitan siitä joka kerta merkinnät mainokseksi. Käännösten etenemistä voi seurata myös ennen niitä. Käännösten yhteydessä palautan myös 2005 - 2006 tekemäni Viikon kasvi -sarjan. Olkoon se esimakuna suuresta kasvivalokuvausprojektistani sen julkaisun alla. On syytä huomauttaa, että kaikki tämä etenee hitaasti muiden samaan aikaan olevien projektien takia.

I have now modified the credits and my blog profile (now also in english) on the sidebars of my blogs. At the same time the name of this blog changed a little. Now my aim is to finally start making tags to all of my posts. At the same time I'll translate those posts into english, which are yet only in finnish in this blog. When I have translated one month's old posts into english, I will make posts about it as advertisments every time. One can observe the proceeding of the translations also before them. Along with the translations I will return the Plant of The Week series I made during 2005 - 2006. Will it be as a taster of my big plant photography project before its publishing. It must be notified, that all this will proceed slowly due to the other projects being present at the same time.

Facebook, motivaatio-ongelma ja kasvivalokuvaus - Facebook, a motivation problem and the plant photography

Nyt olen minäkin (vaatii oman rekisteröitymisen ko. sivustolle) ottanut osaa Facebook -villitykseen. Päivitän lisää "sälää" sinne vähitellen, mutta on siellä jo jotain informaatiota minusta.

Tämä viikko on ollut arboretumini suhteen edelleen vaikeaa ja en ole tehnyt mitään sen eteen; ajoittain tässä projektissa tulee eteen esim. motivaatiovaikeuksia (kuten nyt) ja ajattelin tuoda sen tässä ilmi suoraan. On hyvä tuoda esille myös projektiensa huonoja puolia, jotta kokonaiskuva vastaavanlaisiin projekteihin ryhtyville kävisi selvemmäksi. Aina kannattaa kuitenkin rohkeasti lähteä kokeilemaan ja yrittämään vaikeuksista huolimatta!

Tänään aion mennä tarkistamaan hallatuhotilanteen taimistolleni. Viime viikon jälkeen hallaa ei ole ollut sateiden, pilvien, tuulten ja lämpimämmän ilmamassan takia. Ensi yönä on kuitenkin taas jonkinlainen vaaran paikka... Sää jatkuu viikon loppuun asti enimmäkseen poutaisena, mutta syksyisen viileänä.

Tällä viikolla aikaani on mennyt jälleen hyvin intensiivisesti kasvien valokuvausprojektiini. Viikon loppuun mennessä kuvasaaliini on kasvanut ainakin 300 kuvalla (jo vuodesta 2005 melkein jokaisena kasvukauden viikkona tuo on ollut tyypillinen kuvamäärä ja välillä enemmänkin). Parhaillaan mielenkiintoista ovat mm. viimeisten hedelmien kypsyminen ja ensimmäiset ruskavärit. Uuden tietokoneeni avulla näiden kuvien lataaminen Flickr -sivuilleni käy aikaisempaa huomattavasti nopeammin. Näyttää siltä, että voin aloittaa suuren kasvikuvamassani julkaisemisen jo tämän syksyn aikana. Kerron lisää informaatiota aiheesta ajallaan...



Now I as well (one must have his / hers own registration to the site in question) have been taken part to the Facebook craze. I will update more "stuff" in there cradually, but there is some information about myself allready.

This week has been further difficult regarding my arboretum and i have done nothing for it; occasionally there are appearing for example difficulties with the motivation in this project (like now) and i thought to bring that out frankly here. It is good to bring out also the bad sides of one's projects, that the full picture would become clearer to those who will embark similar kinds of projects. However it is always worth to start experimenting and trying bravely despite the difficulties!

Today i will go to check out the frost damage situation at my nursery. Since last week there haven't been ground frost due to rains, clouds, winds and a warmer air mass. However during the next night there will be again a some kind of risk for that...The weather will continue mostly rainless and autumnally cool to the end of the week.

During this week my time has been spend very intensively again to my plant photographing project. Until the end of the week my crop of photos has been numbered up to at least 300 photos (allready since 2005 this has been the typical photo amount of allmost every week during the growing season and occasionally even more). Currently interesting matters are for example the last fruits to become ripen and the first autumn / fall colours. With the help of my new computer uploading these photos into my Flickr pages will be significantly faster than before. It looks like i will be able to start publishing my large plant photo mass allready during this autumn. I will tell more information about the matter in time...

Edessä kanadannuppupuita (Cercis canadensis) ja takana siipiköynnöstä (Tripterygium regelii) - In the front Eastern Redbuds (Cercis canadensis) and in the back Regel's Threewingnut (Tripterygium regelii).


Yllä oleva kuvasarja esittää jälleen taimistossani tapahtuneita töitä. Alimmassa kuvassa nähdään viime viikolla purkittamani kanadannuppupuut ja ylemmissä tällä viikolla uusiin isompiin purkkeihin laittamani taimet; hopeapoppeli ja vuorivaahtera. Työpäivä oli torstai 26.7. ja samalla tein myös normaaleja kitkemis- ja kastelutöitä. Sadetta oli kertynyt edellisen viikon käynnin jälkeen vain 5 mm, joten kastelulle oli taas selvää tarvetta. Vielä ainakin ensi viikon keskityn pelkästään taimistotöihin (kasvien vaihtoa isompiin purkkeihin) ja sitten alkaa istutustyöt arboretumiin.

Kasvien kasvatuksen suhteen säät ovat olleet melko suosiolliset Etelä-Suomessa, mutta etelärannikolla kuurosateet ovat olleet melko vähäisiä sisämaahan verrattuna. Se on kuitenkin hyvin tyypillistä. Lämpötilojenkin suhteen olosuhteet ovat jatkuneet edelleen hyvin normaaleina ja siten Suomi on ollut näkymättömänä sivustaseuraajana Euroopan erikoisissa säissä; Britannian tulvat ja kaakkoisen Euroopan helteet. Päivisin on ollut n. +20 astetta (lämpimimmillään n. +25 astetta). Sen verran lämpimiä ilmamassat ovat olleet, että yhtenä yönä oli alimmillaan jopa yli +15 astetta. Siihen vaikuttivat tosin myös pilviset ja tuuliset säät.

Alkavan viikon alussa sää jatkuu päivälämpötilojen osalta vähän tavanomaista viileämpänä, joten +20 astetta ei ehkä ylity. Yöt ovat tuulten ja pilvien takia edelleen melko lämpimiä; +10 - +15 astetta. Alkuviikon merkittävin tapahtuma on tiistaiksi etelästä saapuva voimakas matalapaine. Sen yhteydessä esiintyy voimakkaita tuulia ja runsaita sateita; mahdollisesti voisi olla tiedossa jopa paikallisia tulvia ja tuulituhoja. Alkavan viikon lopuksi esim. weatheronline -palvelun sääkartat kertovat tänään iltapäivällä ehkä jopa sitä pitkään odotettua kunnollista hellettä. Vaikuttaa siltä, että tuo hellemassa olisi kuitenkin kosteaa ja matalapaineita liikkuisi lähellä. Se tietäisi ukkosbongareille kesän parasta jaksoa tähän mennessä Etelä-Suomessa. Odotan joka tapauksessa innolla tulevaa viikkoa, koska olen joutunut odottamaan kunnon ukkosta toukokuun lopusta lähtien. Onneksi tiistain matalapaine on erittäin mielenkiintoinen tuhovoimastaan huolimatta (tai juuri sen takia).

Kasvien suhteen tuleva viikko näyttäisi siis myös olevan täydellinen, koska runsaan sateen jälkeen tuleva helleaalto olisi paras mahdollinen sattuma. Kasvukauden vaihe on tällä hetkellä edennyt siihen, että esim. maitohorsman (Epilobium angustifolium) kukintovanoissa on enää latvaosat kukassa, mutta valkovillaisen siemenen lento on alkamassa vasta paikoin lämpimimimillä kasvupaikoilla. Kotipihlajan (Sorbus aucuparia) marjat ovat puolikypsiä ja kotipuutarhoissa omenien varhaisinta satoa tekevien lajikkeiden hedelmät alkavat olemaan lähes kypsiä. Kasvukausi on edelleen n. viikon edellä tavanomaisesta aikataulusta.

Jos joku ihmettelee arboretum-projektini hidasta etenemistä, niin kerron vielä lopuksi, että samaan aikaan olen edelleen jatkanut myös kasvien valokuvaamista. Joka viikko tämä on sisältänyt 1 - 3 valokuvausreissua eli saman verran päiviä (töiden jälkeen). Samalla olen ladannut Flickr -sivuilleni tätä valokuvasatoa, mutta edelleen pidän ne kuvat julkaisematta. Tällä hetkellä suunnittelen niiden kuvien julkaisun aloittamista tämän kasvukauden jälkeen...



The photo series above illustrates again works done at my nursery. In the lowest photo we see the Eastern Redbuds put in the new containers last week and in the upper photos the plants put into bigger new containers this week; White Poplar and Sycamore Maple. The working day was thursday the 26th of July and i did at the same time normal weeding and watering tasks as well. There had accumulated rain only 5 millimetres since the previous visit last week, so there was a clear need for watering again. I will concentrate only to the nursery tasks (putting plants into new bigger containers) at least for the next week and after that planting tasks at the arboretum will start.

Considering the growing of plants the weather has been rather favourable in southern Finland, but by the southern coast showers have been rather minor as compared to the inland areas. However, that is very typical. Considering temperatures as well the conditions have been continuing further very normal and therefore Finland has been an invisible bystader in the exceptional weather conditions in Europe; the floods in Britain and heatwave in southeastern Europe. During afternoons there have been around +20 C (at the highest about +25 C). Air masses have been so much warm, that minimum temperatures were even more than +15 C at the lowest during a one night. Windy and cloudy weather as well affected in that, though.

During the early part of the starting week the weather will continue a bit cooler than the average regarding afternoon temperatures and therefore +20 C won't propably be topped. The nights will be further rather warm due to winds and clouds; between +10 C and +15 C. The most significant feature at the beginning of the next week will be a strong low pressure arriving from the south until tuesday. Along with that there will be strong winds and heavy rain; possibly there might be even local flooding and wind damages in the forecast. For the end of the coming week for example weather maps of the weatheronline service are forecasting at today's afternoon possibly even that long awaited proper heatwave. It would seem though, that the hot air mass would be humid and there would be low pressures moving near. That would mean the best thunder period so far in southern Finland for the stormchasers. I'll wait in any case with exitement for the coming week, because i have had to wait proper thunderstorms since the end of May. Luckily at least the tuesday's low pressure will be very interesting despite (or just because) its damaging forces.

Considering plants the coming week would seem to be perfect as well, because a heatwave coming after profuse amount of rain would be the best possible thing to happen. At this moment the phase of the growing season have been proceeding into a phase, where for example flower heads of Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) have blooming flowers only at the top, but the flying of the white cottony seed is starting only at the warmest localitys. The berries of Rowan / European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia) are half ripen and at home gardens Apple cultivars producing the earliest crops are almost ripened their fruit. The growing season is further about one week ahead of the average schedule.

If someone wonders about the slow proceeding of my arboretum project, so i tell here at the end, that at the same time i have been further continuing to photograph plants as well. That has included 1 to 3 photographing trips every week and in other words the same amount of days (after work). At the same time i have been uploading this crop of photos to my Flickr pages, but i will further keep those photos unpublished. At this moment i am considering to start publishing those photos after this growing season...

Nyt on pakko palata "lomaltani" kertomaan tästä hauskasta sattumuksesta; olin eilen valokuvaamassa puita Helsingin Lauttasaaressa, kun kaksi noin 5 vuotiasta tyttöä tuli iloisena juttelemaan minulle: "kuvasiko setä lintuja?" Vastasin, että en ja kuvaan näitä puita. Siihen tytöt erittäin pettyneen oloisena; "höh!" Se kuvaa yhtäältä hyvin noin nuorten lapsien välittömyyttä. Toisaalta paljastui taas kerran se, kuinka aliarvostettuina itsestäänselvyyksinä kasveja (erityisesti puita) pidetään jo noin nuoresta asti. Ei ihme miksi minulla on niin paljon töitä bioesteettisen propagandan parissa...


Now i have to return from my "vacation" to tell you about this funny incident; yesterday i was photographing trees in the Lauttasaari district in Helsinki, when two about 5 year old girls came cheerfully to talk to me: "Did you photograph birds"? I replied that no and i'm photographing these trees. To that the girls in a very disappointing way; "blah!" That illustrates in one hand well an impulsivity of such young children. On the other hand there was revealed once again the fact, that how underrated self-evident truths plants (especially trees) are considered allready from such an young age. No wonder why I have so much work with the bio esthetic propaganda...
