Kasvivalokuvausprojektista - About the plant photographing project

Nyt kerron, mitä olen pohtinut kasvivalokuvausprojektiini liittyen. Olen tehnyt asiassa päätöksen. Alunperin tarkoitukseni oli alkaa julkaisemaan kasvikuviani Flickr -sivuillani jo tänä vuonna kasvukauden etenemisen mukaisesti, mutta projektin suuren koon, muiden kiireideni ja tietokoneiden ailahtelevuuden / hitauden takia (mm. kuvien lataaminen Flickr -sivuille on välillä tökkivän hidasta) päätin siirtää kuvien julkaisemisen vasta ensi vuoteen ja siitä eteen päin. Viivytykseen on selkeänä perusteena se, että haluan tehdä projektin kunnolla, koska sen luonne ja laajuus tulevat olemaan niin perinpohjaisia ja isoja. Lisäksi haluan jatkaa ainakin vielä tänä vuonna kuvaamista varsin intensiivisesti. Haluan pitää projektin kasassa jakamalla sen eri vaiheisiin. Nyt on vielä tärkeää materiaalin haaliminen ja vasta myöhemmin alkaa sen esilletuonti, järjestely, analysointi ja jalostaminen. Se vaihe voi kestää useita vuosia.

Haluan paljastaa kuitenkin jo tässä vaiheessa projektin luonnetta (olen tosin kertonut jo aikaisemminkin tähän liittyvää). Olen siis kuvannut vuodesta 2005 lähtien melkein kaikenlaisten kasvien kaikenlaisia kasvutilanteita Etelä-Suomessa. Kuvia on kertynyt jo useita tuhansia ja olen käynyt läpi useita satoja eri lajeja. Saatu materiaali toimii jatkossa monella tavalla; yhtäältä se on inspiraationa itselleni useilla tavoilla omalla alallani niin työelämässä kuin omissa "harrasteissa". Toisaalta haluan jakaa kasveista uudenlaistakin tietoa maisema-arkkitehdin ja taiteellisen sielun näkökulmasta. Tämä uudenlainen tieto tarkoittaa kasvien esittämistä vaihtoehtoisella tavalla verrattuna aikaisempiin ja perinteisiin tapoihin. Vaihtoehto perustuu puutteeseen, jonka olen tiedostanut jo monta vuotta niin puutarha- kuin muissa kasvikirjoissa ja nykyisissä nettikasvioissakin; kasveja on aikaisemmin esitetty lähinnä kasvitieteellisen kuivakkaasti ja keskittymällä melkein pelkästään vain niiden peruskasvutilanteisiin (kukinta-, hedelmä-, ruska- ja talviasutilanteet tyypillisimmillään).

Uusi tapani esittää kasveista myös niitä kasvutilanteita, jotka ovat peruskasvutilanteiden välissä; eri asteiset lehtien puhkeamiset, nuppuvaiheet, ruskan vaiheet jne. Näitäkin kasvutilanteita pyrin tuomaan esille totunnaisesta poikkeavan taiteellisesti, joka tarkoittaa monenlaisia kuvauskulmia ja -sommitteluja. Tämä tapahtuu myös korostamalla vähemmän ilmiselviä kunkin kasvin piirteitä. Vaihtelevien kasviryhmien kuvaaminen kuuluu asiaan saatavilla olevien mahdollisuuksien mukaan. Tämän taiteellisuuden tarkoituksena on korostaa kasvien esteettisiä piirteitä mahdollisimman ekspressiivisesti ja monipuolisesti; toimintani on siis myös bioesteettistä propagandaa. Propaganda ei kuitenkaan tässä tapauksessa perustu valehtelemiseen :) Kirjoitan jossain vaiheessa myöhemmin analyysiä siitä, mitä tarkoitan tällä bioesteettisellä propagandalla.

Liikaa taiteellisuutta pyrin silti välttämään ko. valokuvausprojektissa, koska haluan informatiivisuuden säilyvän kunkin kasvin ominaispiirteistä. Metodini on siten vaihteleva risteytys kasvitieteellistä ja taiteellista näkökulmaa. Tärkeää on siis myös se, että kasvien vähemmän tunnetut kasvutilanteetkin käyvät hyvin ilmi, koska esim. monesti juuri keväällä tuttujakaan kasveja ei helposti tunneta niiden ns. keskeneräisten kasvutilanteiden takia. Eräskin jopa omalla alallani opiskeleva ihmetteli joitakin vuosia sitten kovasti erään hiirenkorvalla olevan puun luona lajimääritystä, vaikka muutoin tunsi erittäin hyvin ko. puun; ihan tavallinen tammihan (Quercus robur) se oli.

Tämä uusi kasvivalokuvaustapani merkitsee myös kasvitieteellistä parannusta, koska haluan tuoda ilmi kasvien kehitysvaiheiden riippuvuuden lämmön määrästä (tehoisa lämpösumma) mahdollisimman monen lajin kohdalla ja mahdollisimman monen kasvutilanteen kohdalla. Tämä fenologia (tieteenala, joka tutkii mm. kasvien kasvun rytmiikkaa vuodenkierrossa) on koristekasveilla vielä varsin vähän tutkittua verrattuna siihen mitä olen nyt pyrkinyt tekemään. Ainakaan sitä ei ole tuotu riittävän hyvin esille aikaisemmin. Perennoilla ja hyötykasveilla tämä on melko hyvin tiedostettu ja tutkittu jo ammoin, mutta siinäkin on huomioitu lähinnä vain tyypillinen keskimääräinen kukinta tai hedelmien kypsyminen; kasveilla on muitakin esteettisesti herkullisia kasvuvaiheita kuin vain kukinta ja hyötykasvien lisäksi koristekasvienkin kasvutilanteiden tuntemisesta on hyötyä puisto- ja puutarhakulttuurissa.

On siis aika tuoda kasveista esille fenologisia piirteitä aikaisempaa selvästi tarkemmin ja laajemmin. Se tulee uudistamaan kasvillisuuden käyttöä kaikenlaisessa vihersuunnittelussa, koska laajasta otoksesta kasveja tulee paljastumaan paljon vuodenaikojen kehityksessä piileviä ominaisuuksia värien, tekstuurien ja habituksien suhteen palvelemaan kaikenlaisia sommittelu- ja suunnittelumetodeita. Myös ns. uusien (ainakin suomalaisille) kasvilajien esittelyjä ja käyttömahdollisuuksia tulee samalla hyvin ilmi. Neljän vuodenajan ilmastossa tämä luo aikaisempaa paremman paletin käyttää olosuhteita hyväksi ja se on tärkeää myös ilmastonmuutoksen takia.

Kaikkeen tähän ryhdyin, koska jo monta vuotta sitten havaitsin monta koti- ja ulkomaista puutarha- ja kasvikirjaa lukeneena, että en saanut mistään riittävästi tietoa kasvien esteettisistä ominaisuuksista, jotka on monesti esitetty myös kovin suurpiirteisesti ainakin fenologisten seikkojen suhteen (mm. kukinta-aikojen määritys) ja matkan varrella olen havainnut ko. tiedoissa myös selkeitä virheitä joissakin julkaisuissa. Niinpä ryhdyin itse selvittämään ja tekemään asiaa paremmin eteenpäin aluksi lähinnä omiin tarpeisiini, mutta näin nettiaikana huomasin pian myös yhden erinomaisen mahdollisuuden jakaa tätä tietoa myös muille; blogit ja kuvapalvelut. Jossakin vaiheessa toivon, että keräämäni tieto näkyy myös muutoin; esim. konkreettisesti ympäristössä jossakin suunnittelemassani julkisessa puistossa tms. Tässä vaiheessa minulla ei ole vielä suunnitteluprojekteja oman arboretumprojektini lisäksi.

Valitettavasti joudun siis tänä vuonna tuottamaan vielä pettymyksen kasveista kiinnostuneille, kun en julkaise näitä kasvikuvia. Kärsivällisyys palkitaan kuitenkin jossain vaiheessa ja saattaa esim. tässä blogissa olla ajoittain yksittäisiä kasvikuvia kulloiseenkin aiheeseen liittyen, kuten haavan (Populus tremula) kukinnasta äskettäin.



Now i tell you, what i have been thinking regarding my plant photographing project. I have done a decision on the matter. Originally my intention was to start publishing my plant photos in my Flickr pages allready during this year according to the proceeding of the growing season, but due to the large size of the project, due to my other hurries and due to slowness / changeful ways of computers (for example the uploading of the photos onto Flickr pages is sometimes slow in a jerky way) i decided to postpone the publishing of the photos to the next year and from there onwards. The clear reason for the delay is the fact, that i want to do the project properly, because its nature and size will be so fundamental and large. In addition i want to continue at least during this year photographing in a rather intensive way. I want to keep the project entact as dividing it into different phases. Now it is yet important to gather material and only later comes the time to introduce it, organize it, analyze it and refine it. That phase can take several years of time.

However, i want to reveal some of the project's nature allready at this point (i have told you allready earlier as well things associating with this). So i have been photographing since the year 2005 every kinds of growing stages of allmost every kinds of plants in southern Finland. There have been cumulating photos allready several thousands and i have gone through several hundreds of species. The obtained material will be performing in many ways in the future; in one hand it will be as an inspiration to me in several ways in my profession both in working life and in my "hobbies". On the other hand i want to spread new kind information as well of the plants from the perspective of a landscape architect and an artistic soul. This new kind of information means presenting the plants in an alternative way as compared to previous and traditional ways. The alternative is based on the shortcoming, which i have been knowing for several years both in garden and other plant books and also in modern flora of the net; the plants have been presented previously mainly just in a rather dry botanical way and focusing allmost entirely only on their basic growing stages (blooming, fruiting, fall colouring and winter stages in their most typical ways).

My new way of photographing plants will show also those growing stages of the plants, which are between the basic growing stages; leafings out in various degrees, bud stages, fall colour phases and so on. I will aim to present also these growing stages artistically altering from a conventional way, which means many kinds of angular fields and compositions. This happens also by underlining less obvious features of the every plant in question. Photographing of variable plant groupings is part of the matter according to obtainable possibilities. The purpose of this artistic way is to underline the esthetic properties of the plants in the most expressive and variable way possible; so my activity is also a bio-esthetic propaganda. However the propaganda in this case isn't based on lies :) I will write at some point later an analysis, where i'll tell you what i mean with this bio-esthetic propaganda.

I will avoid too much arty features in this photographing project though, because i want informative features to remain of the characteristics of the every plant in question. My method is therefore a hybrid of botanical and artistic views. So it's also important, that unfamiliar growing stages as well of the plants will be finely on display, because for example just in spring it is many times hard to identify even familiar plants due to their so called unfinished growing stages. Couple of years ago a certain student of even the same profession where i am as well was wondering hard of the identification of a tree with unfolding leaves, allthough she knew the species otherwise very well; it was plain English Oak (Quercus robur).

This new plant photographing method of mine means also a botanical improvement, because i want to bring out the dependence of plant growing stages on the amount of warmth (the effective temperature sum) on the cases of as many plants and growing stages as possible. This phenology (a field of science, which among others studies rhythms of plant growing during the year's cycle) is yet rather little studied on the cases of ornamental plants as compared to what i have been aiming to do now. At least it hasn't been brought out well enough before. On the cases of perennials and useful plants it has been rather well known and studied allready in days of yore, but there as well there have been taken into account mainly just a typically average blooming and ripening of fruits; the plants have also other delicious growing stages besides only blooming and in addition to useful plants knowing of growing stages of ornamental plants as well are for the benefit in the horticulture of parks and gardens.

Therefore it's time to bring out phenological features of the plants much more precisely and widely than before. That will improve the use of plants in all kinds of green area planning / designing, because there will be revealed a lot of properties hiding in the year's cycle regarding colours, textures and characters to serve all kinds of composition and planning / designing methods. Also introductions and possibilities of uses of so called new plant species (at least to finns) will be finely on display at the same time. In the climate of four seasons this will create a better palette than before to take advantage of circumstances and it is important due to the climate change as well.

I took up all this, because allready several years ago as read several native and foreign garden and plant books i observed, that i wasn't able to find enough information anywhere about the esthetic properties of the plants, which are many times presented in such a slack way at least regarding phenological properties (timing of blooming amongst others) and along the way i have observed also clear faults in that information in some publications. Therefore i decided to find out and do the matter better foward myself at first mainly for my own purposes, but in these times of the net i soon noticed one excellent way of spreading the information to others as well; blogs and photo services. At some point in the future i wish, that the information i have gathered will be showing in other ways as well; for example in a concrete way in environment in some public park designed by me. At this phase i don't have yet any design projects in addition to my own arboretum project.

So unfortunately i have to disappoint yet this year the people liking plants, since i don't publish these plant photos. However the patience will be rewarded at some point and there might be single plant photos occasionally for example in this blog associating with the matters in question, as recently regarding the blooming of European Aspen (Populus tremula).
