Lokakuun 2006 Flickr sarjat - Flickr sets of October 2006

After about a week long pause here is again monthly photo sets of the blog trilogy. Now it's the turn of the photo sets of October 2006. I haven't published these photos anywhere else before, as i have allready mentioned. In other words here you are, a portion of the autumn; The blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3!

Lumensyvyystiedot tarkentuvat - The snow depth informations are getting more precise

There was a news in the pages of the Finnish Meteorological Institute this week, that the snow depth value measurements are getting more precise (unfortunately there's no english version link available, but in brief i tell you, that the
Finnish Meteorological Institute is working together with the laboratory of the Space Technology at the Helsinki University of Technology to create a better method to make more precise snow depth and snow water value measurements with the help of satellites). This is a good news for example concerning my own interests. I have been longing for a long time for a better springtime information to the snow depth maps of the Finnish Meteorological Institute itself. Hopefully that new method will be showing on there in the near future. Now that snow depth map in question appears to be very inaccurate and even misleading during especially springtimes, if one cannot interpret it or one doesn't have experience of nature concerning that.

For example in the snow depth informations of this day's map the fields of the lightest blue and the second lightest blue aren't evenly the mentioned snow depth value, but in a typical way of spring there appear great differences in depths and various melted spots appear up to even large snowfree areas due to differences in microclimates in forests, fields and slopes and so on. During springtime the snowcover is uneven due to the strong radiation of the sun as well, where the shadowy and cold soil type surfaces are melting in a much different rate than sunny and warm soil type areas. In addition the snowcover formed during winter is for starters uneven as winds have been drifted snow in various ways and thaw periods have been compressed the cover differently on different spots. The melting and freezing back and forth is also affecting in various ways on different areas. All this is appearing differently every year.

I have been observing and telling about earlier as well, that in the snow depth map in question there are inconsistent matters appearing in the showing of the snow melting; for example in some region the last light blue area was showed larger in the following day, allthough the melting was continuing all the time. That is of course impossible, but is it resulted by the fact, where the snow depth value of a some weather observation post was missing and it affected to the map?... In any case these kinds of faults are sticking into my eyes easily and there have always been plenty of them every spring as long as this map has been appearing.

The current method clearly doesn't give chance to better ways, but especially during spring one improvement would be the fact, where on the same or on a different map (also in a different scale) there would be showed the grade of the snowcover's spottyness with for example in raster fields (or in colour fields on a different map). This index would be showing the portion of the snowfree soil as in percents on every concerned area. The raster fields would be for example;
25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The portion of the snowfree soil would be observed both with ones eyes around the region of every weather observing posts at the time of the snow depth measurement and mixing that information with that new information received from a satellite. In this way the difficult springtime regional differences in snowcover would be better to comprehent and at the same time differences between regions and springs would be better observed in the habit of the melting snow concerning also the spottyness and the settlements of the snowcover.

At the most precise these kinds of informations would be usefull for example in the examination of microclimatical matters. We know that microclimatical matters are important for example in the cultivation of plants both in agriculture and in gardens and parks. There is also a connection with the habit of the soil frost in here. On a general level this evaluation and showing of the snowcover's spottyness would give much more realistic view to the melting of the snow during sprintime than it has been possible up to now.

Maaliskuun kesän vaikutuksia - Influences of the March summer

Nähtäväksi jää, kuinka ankara takatalvi on silloin mahdollinen...

Kasvukauden alkamispäivä on tänä vuonna eteläisessä Suomessa paikkakunnasta riippuen n. 23. - 24.3. Huomisesta lähtien kasvukausi kuitenkin keskeytyy, koska vuorokauden keskilämpötilat laskevat alle +5 asteen. Nyt saattaa seurata jopa useita viikkoja kestävä jakso, jolloin kasvukausi on keskeytynyt. Normaalisti kasvukauden alku tapahtuisi huhtikuun lopulla.

So it was to happen, that there was reached yet another all time record of high March temperature in tuesday the 27th of March. It happened at the airport of Helsinki - Vantaa and the value was +17,5 C. As opposed to that at the center of Helsinki near the sea there was at the same time cooler than the day before, because the sea breeze affected more than before. The same applied to wednesday and yesterday as well. Temperatures remained between +10 C and +14 C by the narrow southern coast, as in inland areas of southern Finland there was even about +16 C during afternoons up to yesterday. Today this enormous March "summer" is ending, because allready tomorrow temperatures will stay under +10 C during the afternoon. In sunday the weather will warm up a bit, but during the next week the weather will become clearly colder. It remains to be seen, how severe wintry weather there will be possible...

This ending wave of warm weather has now resulted a beginning of the growing season never seen before. So there was confirmed yesterday, that the growing season has now beginned in southern Finland. It has never happened before in March as far as i know. The starting day of the growing season in southern Finland is this year according to the region about 23rd. - 24th of March. However from tomorrow onwards the growing season is interrupted, because the daily mean temperatures will sink below +5 C. Now there might be following even a several weeks long period, where the growing season is interrupted. Normally the growing season would start at the end of April.

However the continuing of the growing season as resulted by a new wave of warm weather mustn't be considered as an actual start of the growing season despite its even very long pause, but the growing season will be continuing there, where it's now interrupted. The value of the effective temperature sum describing the phase of the growing season is now in southern Finland locally varying about 5 to 15, where it will now stay for a some period of time... Last year the corresponding values were accumulated right in the last days of April. This amount of warmth appeared then and now as well in the same way as for example as beginned blooming of European Aspen (
Populus tremula) and Goat Willow (Salix caprea) and opened puds of some shrub and tree species; as Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.) amongst others. In this way the start of the growing season appears this year concretically as well despite the very odd time of the year.

The wave of warm weather has of course been surprising in various ways and it has been causing new problems for me during this week. It has messed my schedules of updating my blogs and my photographing
for example. Suddenly there was a lot of to photograph concerning plants as well and at the same time i wanted to start spring tasks of my arboretum project. Therefore i visited my arboretum area in Sipoo (near Helsinki) in thursday the 29th of March and i did fertilizing tasks there. I've been busy otherwise as well and therefore the updating of the blog trilogy photo sets have been interrupted on my Flickr pages. However on that front things are starting to happen again during this weekend and therefore it is worth to wait for information allready tomorrow in this blog concerning that. Tomorrow or in sunday i will tell you with photos about that first visit of the year to my arboretum. Plans concerning my plant photographing are also starting to be ready for publishing soon and i will tell about that in the near future...

Erikoisuudet ylittävät itsensä - The peculiarities are topping themselves

Kuvassa nähdään lämpötila eilen iltapäivällä n. klo. 17.00. kuvattuna Helsingin keskustassa Kampissa. Keväälle tyypillinen merituuli ei päässyt tuona päivänä viilentämään tätä paikkaa sisämaata viileämmäksi, koska yleinen (geostrofinen) ilmavirtaus luoteesta - pohjoisesta kumosi merituulen vaikutuksen. Niinpä ennätyslämpö valtasi koko Helsinginkin - In the picture we see the temperature yesterday afternoon at about 5 pm as photographed in the center of Helsinki at Kamppi. The typical springtime sea breeze didn't have a change to cool down the air at this place cooler than in inland areas during that day, because the general (geostrofical) air flow from the northwest - north overruled the influence of the sea breeze. Therefore the record breaking warmth invaded the whole Helsinki too.

Tällä hetkellä on tavallaan hauskaa blogata Suomen säästä, koska saa keksiä runsaasti ylisanoja sitä kuvaamaan. Kuten eilen arvelin, niin eilen saavutettiin uusi kaikkien aikojen maaliskuun lämpöennätys.

At this moment it is in a way funny to blog about the weather in Finland, because one can invent a lot of superlatives to describe it. As i suspected yesterday, there was reached the new all time record of high temperature in March. So the previous record was measured in the 24th of March in 1945 in Kumlinge (in the island region of southwestern corner of Finland) and then the reading was +16,0 C. Yesterday there was measured +16,3 C in Espoo and Jokioinen (in parts of even Lapland there was more than +10 C)! Today that reading can be topped and perhaps even today's reading as well tomorrow, so therefore i'll be waiting with exitement the proceeding of the week... If that will happen, isn't it then telling very loudly about the climate change; normally it would be impossible, that the all time record of high temperature would be broken in two days in a row let alone three days in a row. That is also unexpected, that several all time records are topped within the same year; the drought of the summer, all time record of high temperature in December and this wave of warm weather.

It looks like we're in an interim period into the new climate, where even the statistics are becoming new in a fastened rate. Actually we are allready living that long forecasted future. Not counted for the short cold periods (at the beginning of last November and during February) there have been allmost all the time much warmer than usually in southern Finland during a period of over half a year. This wave of warm air is also an example again of the fact, that completely new kinds of circumstances appear; for example within the spring migration of the birds there have been observed record breakingly much new arrival records of all time during last couple of weeks. Never before in history there aren't known so many bird species (even more than 10) to have done so. Yesterday as well i observed same kind of phenomenon within the plant kingdom, as i went for a visit to photograph in the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki; there were allready many bulbous plants in profuse bloom and puds of many woody plants were opening and with couple of species even opened allready in the way like normally in the last week of April.

So the cicumstances are new in such a way, that many people seem to have problems at dealing with them. Yesterday for example in the even summery warmth of the afternoon there were both people with winter glothing and summer glothing wandering around the center of Helsinki. I was glothing myself according to the weather ;)... There appeared problems also in the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in this new situation; as being put as a winter protection for some perennials and bulbous plants there were yet in place on the ground twigs of conifer trees, allthough the plants are allready pushing through them even into full bloom in some cases.

So, how one can deal with gardening tasks in this time of the year in this situation? Firstly now it's in a way the end of April and tasks of that time can allready be done. As i mentioned yesterday, for example planting tasks are included here as the soil is unfrozen. Of course this doesn't apply to frost sensitive seasonal flowers, but for example trees with containers can be planted. The record breakingly early start of the growth one cannot prevent of course and therefore the new growth is forced to face the possibility of late wintry weather. It is worth to remove the protective layers for the time of this wave of warm weather, so that the plants have the opportunity to grow properly without harm of weight and shadow. Only as wintry weather is threatening the suitable protections for the situation can be done again and then remove them immediately as the weather has warmed up again. However if the wintry weather will be severe, then frost damages of some plants cannot be prevented anymore as the growth is progressed far. One must observe though, that for example last year in May many plants got away from several frosty nights rather well with their frost damages as well despite the growth was being progressed very far. If the possible frosts will remain milder than -5 C after this wave of warm weather, then the situation isn't any different or peculiar as in normal springs. The calendar doesn't mean nothing at all to plants, because in their growth they follow at this stage slavisly only accumulating amount of warmth as there are allready enough light available. Only from the perspective of humans the time of this growth is "wrong" in the amount of a month. However i'll be waiting with some fear of that, how severe the possible cold period will form...

Erikoinen kevät ja arboretumasiaa - The peculiar spring and arboretum matters

Kynäkataja - Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana).

Laavapihlaja - Korean Mountain Ash (Sorbus alnifolia); peltomyyrän syöminä - as eaten by short-tailed vole.

Ussurinpäärynä - Chinese Pear (Pyrus ussuriensis); peltomyyrän syöminä - as eaten by short-tailed vole.
