This week has been a bit difficult regarding the start of arboretum project's spring tasks. At first I was fretting the fact, that getting compost and fertilizer from yet closed garden shops made things difficult. Then during the early week rainy weather restrained desires for work. Yesterday I finally went to check out the situation at my nursery place and I did the destroying of the "leftover" plants at the expense of more important species. This way I was able to free more than 50 plant pots into a new use and the proceeding of the project became easier. The destroyed species were; Norway Maple (Acer platanoides), Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa), Wych Elm (Ulmus glabra), Oak-leaf Mountain Ash (Sorbus hybrida) and single Lindens (Tilia sp.) and Amur Maples (Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala). Today I placed seeds into soaking as well; the information is found in the photo sets in question (A B) - and at last I was able to get compost and fertilizer.

Magnolioita uuden ajan kasvienkäyttöä varten - Magnolias for the new era's plant use
Lajit ja lajikkeet: Tässä ensimmäisenä on ilmeisesti risteymiä ym. vain viljelystä tunnettuja lajikkeita, joista käytetään vain lajikenimeä; Magnolia 'Ann', Magnolia 'Betty', Magnolia 'Big Dude', Magnolia 'Big Pink', Magnolia 'Caerhays Belle', Magnolia 'Charles Coates', Magnolia 'Daybreak', Magnolia 'Elizabeth', Magnolia 'Galaxy', Magnolia 'Gold Star', Magnolia 'Heaven Scent', Magnolia 'Jane', Magnolia 'Judy', Magnolia 'Leda', Magnolia 'Limelight', Magnolia 'Manchu Fan', Magnolia 'Norman Gould', Magnolia 'Peppermint Stick', Magnolia 'Pickard's Ruby', Magnolia 'Pinkie', Magnolia 'Randy', Magnolia 'Ricki', Magnolia 'Royal Crown', Magnolia 'Spectrum', Magnolia 'Star Wars', Magnolia 'Sundance', Magnolia 'Susan', Magnolia 'Ultimate Yellow', Magnolia 'Vulcan', Magnolia 'Yellow Lantern', Magnolia 'Yellow River', "brooklyninmagnolia"; Magnolia brooklynensis 'Woodsman', Magnolia brooklynensis 'Yellow Bird', Magnolia brooklynensis 'Yellow Fever', campbellinmagnolia; Magnolia campbellii var. mollicomata, magnolialaji; Magnolia denudata, Magnolia denudata 'Dan Xin', magnolialaji; Magnolia globosa, hopeamagnolia; Magnolia hypoleuca, "kewnmagnolia"; Magnolia kewensis 'Wada's Memory', japaninmagnolia; Magnolia kobus, magnolialaji; Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra', "löbnerinmagnolia"; Magnolia loebneri 'Ballerina', Magnolia loebneri 'Leonard Messel', Magnolia loebneri 'Merrill', "isolehtimagnolia"; Magnolia macrophylla, magnolialaji; Magnolia officinalis var. biloba, magnoliaristeymä; Magnolia X proctoriana, "pajumagnolia"; Magnolia salicifolia, pensasmagnolia; Magnolia sieboldii, "kiinanmagnolia"; Magnolia sinensis, loistomagnolia; Magnolia soulangeana; 'Alba Superba', 'Alexandrina', 'Lennei', 'Rustica Rubra', 'Speciosa', 'Sundew', "sprengerinmagnolia"; Magnolia sprengeri var. diva, tähtimagnolia; Magnolia stellata, Magnolia stellata 'Chrysanthemiflora', Magnolia stellata 'George Henry Kern', Magnolia stellata 'Rosea', sateenvarjomagnolia; Magnolia tripetala, "veitchinmagnolia"; Magnolia X veitchii, magnoliaristeymä; Magnolia X wieseneri, "wilsoninmagnolia"; Magnolia wilsonii.
I found Magnolias for this next introduction (unfortunatelly here as well there aren't found photos of all species in the pages) from the pages of PlantenTuin Esveld nursery; mostly small trees and shrubs, some are big trees, like Cucumber-tree (Magnolia acuminata) and Campbell's Magnolia (Magnolia campbellii). Magnolias are wellknown and important flower plants around the world. Almost every species have very big and colourfull flowers. They are displayed generally also in very profuse amounts at once, but the blooming time isn't that long.
Magnolias can be divided roughly into two types according to the blooming time. One group is the ones flowering in spring before or at the same time with the unfolding leaves. Their flowerbuds are overwintering as hairy and big on the naked twigs and the buds form already during the previous summer. The second group are Magnolias flowering in summer with full foliage. Their flowerbuds are emerging only with the new shoots of the ongoing summer. Summer flowering Magnolias are divided also into evergreen and deciduous species.
So, depending on the species there are Magnolia flowering right from the start of the growing season several months to the middle of summer and in some cases even into summer's end. Knowing the precise flowering times would be cruicial here as well in order to find solutions for the fitting the species together. However, in addition to flowering Magnolias have also other esthetically significant properties. Many form very beautifull small trees in their whole appearance with their tortuous shoots; winter esthetics. In many cases the bark of the trunk is also especially beautifull; being silvery - smooth - having cracks.
Leaves are among the most showy displays along with the flowering during the growing season; some species are growing even tropically big leaves and in autumn fall colours can be an interesting mixture of yellow and brown especially as helped by frosts. However, many times frost can cause the leaves to shed quickly interrupting the fall colour formation. The spring leaf colour is almost always light green and rarely slightly brownish.
Capsule fruits are the third object of admiration, because they form special spikes, which have often conspicuous red - orange - brown colours. The fruits might embellish the shoots far into winter - next spring and the seeds themselves are usually either red or black when revealed.
This introduction includes also those single species, which are already in my plant photography project. Magnolias have been so unknown in Finland due to their sensitivity to cold winters, that now as the climate change is proceeding their introduction and use must be repeated and pointed out. Even finding official finnish names to all isn't coming out well yet; the climate change will increase the need for naming plants significantly. I left the evergreen species out of this introduction, because their winter hardiness is so bad here in the future as well.
This plant genus is so brilliant horn of plenty for showy flower and leaf based fittings together and for single eye catchers in plantings, that taking these species and cultivars from now on into wide experimentations is very much recommended in southern Finland and also in central Finland at least on sheltered places (At the level of Jyväskylä in inland areas and by the western coast at Oulu). The winter hardiness of these introduced species is variable in some degree, but as new circumstances are all the time forming, the only way to get all benefit out of this plant esthetics as well, is to be deliberately experimental without prejudice.
Species and cultivars: Here at first are apparently hybrids and other such cultivars known only from cultivation, which have only cultivar name being used; Magnolia 'Ann', Magnolia 'Betty', Magnolia 'Big Dude', Magnolia 'Big Pink', Magnolia 'Caerhays Belle', Magnolia 'Charles Coates', Magnolia 'Daybreak', Magnolia 'Elizabeth', Magnolia 'Galaxy', Magnolia 'Gold Star', Magnolia 'Heaven Scent', Magnolia 'Jane', Magnolia 'Judy', Magnolia 'Leda', Magnolia 'Limelight', Magnolia 'Manchu Fan', Magnolia 'Norman Gould', Magnolia 'Peppermint Stick', Magnolia 'Pickard's Ruby', Magnolia 'Pinkie', Magnolia 'Randy', Magnolia 'Ricki', Magnolia 'Royal Crown', Magnolia 'Spectrum', Magnolia 'Star Wars', Magnolia 'Sundance', Magnolia 'Susan', Magnolia 'Ultimate Yellow', Magnolia 'Vulcan', Magnolia 'Yellow Lantern', Magnolia 'Yellow River', Brooklyn Magnolia; Magnolia brooklynensis 'Woodsman', Magnolia brooklynensis 'Yellow Bird', Magnolia brooklynensis 'Yellow Fever', Campbell's Magnolia; Magnolia campbellii var. mollicomata, Yulan Magnolia; Magnolia denudata, Magnolia denudata 'Dan Xin', Globe Magnolia; Magnolia globosa, Whitebark Magnolia; Magnolia hypoleuca, Kew's Willow-leaved Magnolia; Magnolia kewensis 'Wada's Memory', Kobus Magnolia; Magnolia kobus, Mulan Magnolia; Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra', Loebner Magnolia; Magnolia loebneri 'Ballerina', Magnolia loebneri 'Leonard Messel', Magnolia loebneri 'Merrill', Big-leaf Magnolia; Magnolia macrophylla, Houpu Magnolia; Magnolia officinalis var. biloba, a Magnolia hybrid Magnolia X proctoriana, Willow-leafed Magnolia; Magnolia salicifolia, Siebold's Magnolia; Magnolia sieboldii, Chinese Magnolia; Magnolia sinensis, Saucer Magnolia; Magnolia soulangeana; 'Alba Superba', 'Alexandrina', 'Lennei', 'Rustica Rubra', 'Speciosa', 'Sundew', Sprenger's Magnolia; Magnolia sprengeri var. diva, Star Magnolia; Magnolia stellata, Magnolia stellata 'Chrysanthemiflora', Magnolia stellata 'George Henry Kern', Magnolia stellata 'Rosea', Umbrella-tree; Magnolia tripetala, Veitch Magnolia; Magnolia X veitchii, a Magnolia hybrid; Magnolia X wieseneri, Wilson's Magnolia; Magnolia wilsonii.

Kasvikuvia toukokuussa 2006; viikko 20 - Plant photos in May 2006; the week 20
The publishing of my plant photography project's photos is now advancing to the week 20 of May 2006. There may be few photos among there, which have already appeared in this blog during that year, but almost all photos are completely new to you readers. During that week the advancing of spring delayed due to a cold weather, but the growing season stayed yet rather well in a normal schedule.

Ennätysvarhaista kevättä seurannassa ja tulevasta viilenemisestä - A piece of record early spring in the follow-up and about a coming cool down
Sää- ja luontoseurannassa on vuorossa huhtikuun 2008 ensimmäiset kuvat. Tässä ovat linkit (A B C). Jakso on kuun alusta eiliseen iltaan asti.
It's the turn of the first photos of April 2008 in the weather and nature follow-up. Here are the links (A B C). The period is from the start of the month to the yesterday evening. There prevailed almost all the time warmer than the average weather during the period as afternoon temperatures were in the beginning even clearly above +10 C. Only last saturday was rather cold as differing from the other days. At the end of the period sunny weather changed into a rainy and occasionally foggy weather, but a warmer than the average air mass reahced narrowly into southern Finland during the last two days, made the nights especially mild as helped by the profuse cloudiness; the minimum temperatures even above +5 C.
The warmth of the period made the thermal growing season to start again in a record breaking way and it is showing now as for example beginned bloomings of European Aspen (Populus tremula), Goat Willow (Salix caprea), Early Forsythia (Forsythia ovata), Liverwort (Hepatica nobilis) and Butterbur (Petasites hybridus), unfolded leaves of Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa), Currants (Ribes sp.) and Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.). The pollen report (doesn't become archived) tells, that the rainy weather has been lowering the amount of pollen in the air. However, Alders (Alnus sp.) are partially already ending their blooming in southern Finland and the next phase of allergy - the blooming of Birch (Betula sp.) - is already at the doorsteps.
The soil has been completely melted from almost since the start of the month, which has been helping lawns to a green growth this early in a never before seen way. Locally lawns were partially green during the whole record mild winter! If there will be the first summery wave of warm weather during the latter part of April, then lawns will be mowed locally for the first time in their history already in April as helped by these circumstances... Last year that was already very close to happen, but now we are really being exited about a possible historical growing season! Now the advance of the growing season is even 3 - 4 weeks ahead of an average schedule.
The weather seems to stay unstable to the end of the week due to the very wide low pressure situated in the western - southern side of Finland. There are many subcentres in it and one of them will move from the south to southern Finland until tomorrow with its rather profuse rains. As it has been weakened at its place, there will form a new subcenter (as moving to the northeast) to southern side of Finland at thursday and at the same time there would seem to strengthen a high pressure over The Arctic Ocean. Due to that the weather would become cooler after tomorrow along with easterly - northeasterly winds. Therefore there may come a pause in the proceeding of the thermal growing season and as the weather will become possibly clearer, nightfrosts might be returning. However, a late wintry weather wouldn't appear to be that bad possibility...

Toinen peräkkäinen ennätysvarhainen kasvukauden alku! - The second record early growing season's start in the row!
Kevät on todella alkanut etenemään erinomaisella tavalla viime päivien aikana tavanomaista lämpimämmän sään ansiosta. Yllä on kuva haavan (Populus tremula) hedekukinnan alkuvaiheesta. Kuva on otettu 1.4.2008 Espoon Tapiolassa ja kukinta on edennyt tilanteesta jo täyteen vaiheeseen tällä hetkellä. Haavan kukinta (hedenorkkojen venyminen "kissavaiheesta" tuulessa lerpattaviksi pötköiksi) on aina hyvä merkki termisen kasvukauden alkamisesta.
Alkamispäivä on sarjan ensimmäinen päivä.
.
Lisäksi kasvien hyödyksi on odotettavissa raikkaita kevätvesisateita.

The spring has really started to proceed in an excellent way during last few days thanks to the warmer than an average weather. Above there is a photo of the early stage male blooming of European Aspen (Populus tremula). The photo is taken at the 1st of April 2008 in the district of Tapiola in Espoo and the blooming has now proceeded from the situation already to the full phase at this moment. The blooming of European Aspen (male catkins getting longer from the "furry stage" to long tubes wailing in the wind) is always a good sign of the thermal growing season's start. The same applies to this spring as well. Last year this phase was even few days earlier thanks to the record warm end of March, but this year as well the growing season has now started very much earlier than on an average. The spring being so early already for the second year in the row, is really an astonishing and sensational matter!
Let's study again the definition of the growing season's start. Last year I wrote these two articles (this and at the 3rd of May 2007 with the headline: Väärän tiedon korjaamista jälleen kerran; kasvukauden alku - Correcting false information once again; the start of the growing season) about the matter, because in many directions there were unclear visions and according to my knowlege false conclusions as well of the issue. The definition is as follows; the growing season begins, when the daily average temperature has been at least five days in the row more than +5 C. The starting day is the first day of the series. Now in a large area of southern Finland there have been these days of more than +5 C in a row already since the 31th of March! The coming days up to sunday appear to be further approximately equally as warm, when now the start of the growing season according to the definition is happening clearer than last year. That is again a good example of the global warming's influences and the change is really noticeable already.
Today I went to the botanical garden of Kaisaniemi in Helsinki to start my this year's plant photography project (I have already photographed plants occasionally in February as well, though). Two significant observations came clearly on my way there as well. Firstly, that phase of the growing season's start; all comparing plants in that other last year's article are now as well precisely at the same growth stage as they were then at the years 2006 and 2007. This year the extremely record breaking mildness of the "winter" caused these plants starting their growth the earliest to begin growth already during February, but that hasn't been altered the growth's phase significantly as compared to the thermal definition in the light of those previous two years. Though, different Alder (Alnus sp.) specimens are blooming in more differing times than earlier; the reason being the blooming period stretched very long.
Secondly, all the species started their growth already in February and in any case before the late winter of the March's end haven't been suffering hardly at all from that winter's even about -10 C of frost. Surely there may appear yet some damages in delay, but I observed again many early growing plants to be very frost tolerant; amongst others Mezereon (Daphne mezereum), Danford Iris (Iris "Danfordiae"), Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), Spring Meadow Saffron (Bulbocodium vernum) are continuing their blooming very well at the botanical garden now as well and many Honeysuckles (Lonicera sp.) and Cherry Princepia (Prinsepia sinensis) being unfolded their leaves are continuing their growth in a healthy way. So, regarding plants one doesn't have to worry too much damages caused by unexpected weather conditions. Plant genes have generally really much of substance in the prepairing for unexpected situations.
So, during the coming days the weather will be favourable for the proceeding of the growing season. Regarding garden maintenace this means extremely early for example the fact, that in the cases of plants requiring dormancy stage, the good period of tree and shrub maintenance cuttings had come to a close already due to the start of the growth. Here is again one example about the fact, how the climate change is affecting the times of garden and park tasks; traditional times are becoming earlier in spring and later in autumn. This is a concrete reality also during this spring and adapting to it seems to be requiring further way too much in some cases; for example this garden shop (it says in the advertisement, that the shop will open during only latter part of April) is way too late in the opening of the spring's selling season this year as well. All garden shops should be open already now, because for example I myself need already fertilizers and compost amongst others for my arboretum project. In addition the soil already completely melted is making every kinds of planting tasks possible already now here in southern Finland and therefore one should be able to buy all plants easily from now on from everywhere (frost sensitive seasonal summerflowers are of course a different matter). Shame on you for being late!
.
Update at the 5th of April at 10:05 PM: today it has been even a surprisingly cold day (temperatures all the time a bit under +5 C), because the frontal system arrived from the west with its rains has proceeded more eastwards than forecasted and already since the yesterday evening there spreaded foggy and cold marine air mass from the southwest in the foreside of the front. Therefore at this moment the growing season's advancing has come to a standstill. Tomorrow the weather will warm up again, but during coming days southern Finland will remain within the influence of low pressures reaching from the south and west and the warmer air mass in the south - southeast doesn't have a proper change to influence. However, afternoon temperatures will reach occasionally about +10 C and the profuse cloudiness will make nights so much mild, that the thermal advancing of the growing season isn't completely paused. In addition there are expected fresh spring rains to favour of plants.

Kylvö 1, kevät 2008 - The sowing 1, spring 2008
I postponed the first sowing until today, but now it has been done; I marked the information about it into these photo sets (A B) on the places of the species in question (Kylvetty - Sown 2.4.2008). As the germination has been happened, I will put photos of the seedlings either into this blog or into my Flickr pages. I will do the same also in the cases of other species I will sow during April and May... These first sowings (two boxes) are indoors in pre-growth cultivation to the end of May. The same applies to many other coming sowings as well, because the species are more or less winter sensitive; an advance in growth as compared to the Finland's natural growing season is necessary.

Kokonainen maaliskuun 2008 seuranta ja suotuisa kevätennuste - The whole follow-up of March 2008 and a favourable spring forecast
Päivitetty jakso on 25. päivästä kuun loppuun; linkit (A B C).
Now I have updated the March 2008 weather and nature follow-up photo sets to the end on my Flickr pages. The updated period is from the 25th day to the end of the month; the links (A B C). During this period winter showed yet its power visually, as at the 26th day came the strongest blizzard of the whole "winter". There came also to the southern coast even about 20 centimetres of snow, but right at the end of the month a spring weather warmer than the average melted that amount quickly.
The warm weather continued also today has melted snow fast and the area having been snowless before the late wintry weather and blizzard is snowless again already (including Helsinki and narrowly Hämeenlinna). At the same time there has now started to appear a very significant difference between the snowless area of the southwest and the eastern old slowly melting snowcover; as we can observe (doesn't become archived), the difference at the snow's appearing limit is striking. However, in the east as well the warm weather will affect at the sunny places as melting the snow effectively and there will be appearing melted patches even on the snow depth area of 25 - 50 centimetres before even that is lowered away.
Yet an addition to here regarding the temperatures of yesterday; the last information tells in this Finnish Meteorological Institute's last month's weather report (unfortunately only in finnish), that the highest temperature yesterday in Finland was +13,2 C, as measured at the airport of Pori. Last year it was record warm already earlier in March; (A B).
About the coming weather; now it appears so, that the colder weather mentioned by me may remain very minor, because that low pressure settling to the west - southwest will keep winds more to the southeast than the east during the weekend. In the situation there will remain warm weather in the southern - southeastern side of Finland and its reaching to southern Finland will be a very close call; either it will get colder or then it may even warm up more. In any case it may rain, though. There won't come any late wintry weather in this light of the facts for now... So, let the favourable spring weather continue.
