Tänään alkoi viileä sääjakso ja näköpiirissä ei ole selvästi lämpimämpää säätä. Sunnuntaina ja eilen oli vielä niin lämmintä, että kasvukauden lämpösumman arvo lisääntyi muutamilla yksiköillä. Esim. Espoon Tapiolassa haapa (Populus tremula) kukkii jo erittäin runsaasti, kuten eilen ottamastani kuvasta havaitaan. Kasvukausi on siis edelleen lähes kuukauden edellä tavanomaisesta aikataulusta, mutta tästä päivästä lähtien kasvu on käytännössä pysähtynyttä ja ero tavanomaiseen kapenee koko ajan.

Sääennusteiden mukaan näyttää siltä, että ensi yö on tämän viikon kylmin tässä vaiheessa. Lämpötila voi olla eteläisessä Suomessa n. -5 astetta. Tämän jälkeen pohjoiselta Atlantilta saapuvat matalapaineet rintamineen ovat niin voimakkaita, että voimakkaan tuulen ja runsaan pilvisyyden ansiosta öisin on vain hyvin heikkoa pakkasta ja välttämättä ei edes mennä pakkasen puolelle viileästä ilmamassasta huolimatta. Niinpä jo melko pitkälle kasvussaan ehtineet monet kasvit saavat mahdollisia pakkasvaurioita lähinnä vain ensi yön takia. Tässä täytyy muistaa lisäksi se, että monet aikaisin normaalistikin kasvunsa aloittavat kasvit kestävät yllättävän hyvin pakkasta. Siten pakkasista ei tarvitse olla erityisen huolissaan. Pakkasvaurioista huolimatta myös monet perennat kykenevät uudistamaan kasvunsa nopeasti seuraavan lämpimän jakson aikana. Hallanarkoja uusia lehtiä kasvattavat puut ja pensaat eivät ole avanneet silmujaan ja nyt jo hiirenkorvalla olevat lajit ovat tyypillisesti varsin pakkasenkestäviä. Mieleeni tulee vain yksi poikkeus, joka on tällä hetkellä paikoin melkein avannut silmunsa; katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). Jos nämä silmut vaurioituvat, niin puu kykenee uudistamaan kasvunsa kuitenkin hyvin.

Ensi yönä on kuitenkin sen verran pakkasta etenkin maan pinnassa hallanaroilla paikoilla, että pitkälle kasvussaan ehtineiden perennojen ja sipulikasvien suojaaminen voi olla kannattavaa ko. paikoilla. Kaupasta saatava pakkaspeite on ok. Paahteisilla paikoilla arkojen lajien uuden kasvun suojaaminen pakkasyön jälkeiseltä auringolta voi olla myös hyvä idea, sillä voimakas auringon säteily voi lisätä vaurioita sulamisen yhteydessä ja heti sen jälkeen. Huomenna tosin heti pakkasyön jälkeen on tiedossa pilvistyvää säätä.

Suojauksista puheen ollen vielä tämä: vastaistutettuja (kahden vuoden sisällä) havupuiden ja -pensaiden (myös alppiruusut) taimia on Suomessa normaalisti suojattu erilaisin peittein (säkkikankaat yms.) maalis - huhtikuun aikana auringon paahteelta maan ollessa vielä roudassa; aurinko voi kuivattaa kasvin, kun se ei saa tilanteessa imettyä kunnolla vettä maasta. Nyt tilanne on päättyneen lämpöaallon takia täysin uusi Etelä-Suomessa. Suojaamista vaativilla paikoilla routa on sulanut kokonaan jo monta päivää sitten. Niinpä suojaukset ovat jo nyt tarpeettomia. Niitä kuitenkin näkee edelleen, mutta mieluummin ne pitäisi poistaa, koska kasvukaudenkin jo alettua peitteet ovat kasvien päällä lähinnä vain haittaavana painona. Lisäksi jatkossa ennustetut yöpakkaset eivät kykene enää jäädyttämään maata lukuun ottamatta paria senttiä ja sekin sulaa joka iltapäivä pois eteläisessä Suomessa. Tässä täytyy muistaa, että tämän vaiheen viileästä sääjaksosta huolimatta luonto elää tällä erää noin huhtikuun lopun tilannetta.

Tämä on yksi esimerkki siitä, kuinka tulevaisuudessa ja jo nyt suomalaisen puisto- ja puutarhakulttuurin täytyy kyetä joustamaan ja tottua toimimaan uusissa olosuhteissa ilmastonmuutoksen edetessä. Perinteeseen ja aikaisemmin hyväksi havaittuun pitäytyminen eivät jatkossa ole enää aina paras tapa tehdä asioita, vaan on rohkeasti tilanteisiin soveltaen kokeiltava uusia asioita ja menetelmiä. Tämä merkitsee esim. puutarhakaupan aloittamista totuttua varhemmin talven jälkeen olosuhteiden niin vaatiessa. Viime viikolla esim. törmäsin odottamattomaan ja ärsyttävään tilanteeseen, kun halusin ostaa päivätyöni jälkeen lannoitesäkkiä arboretumini lannoitustöihin. Espoon Leppävaaran puutarhakauppa Muhevainen olikin vielä kiinni, vaikka olosuhteiden takia olisi pitänyt olla toisin. Onneksi lähellä oleva puutarhamyymälä Kehä I kukka oli hyvänä esimerkkinä auki ja ostin säkin sieltä.



Today started a cool weather period and there isn't clearly warmer weather in the forecast. In sunday and yesterday it was yet so warm, that the value of the growing season's effective temperature sum increased with a few digits. For example in the district of Tapiola in Espoo European Aspen (Populus tremula) is allready in a very profuse bloom, as it is shown in the picture i photographed yesterday. So the growing season is further allmost a month ahead of schedule, but from this day onwards the growth will be practically interrupted and the lead compared to the average will decrease all the time.

According to forecasts the following night will be the coldest of the week at this phase. The temperature can be in southern Finland about -5 C. After this the low pressures arriving from northern Atlantic will be so powerfull with their fronts, that due to strong winds and plentyfull clouds there will be only very minor frost during nights and there won't even necessarily be any frost despite the cool air mass. Therefore many plants grown allready rather far will got possible frost damages mainly just due to the following night. However in addition we must remeber here the fact, that many plants starting their growth early also normally will tolerate surprisingly well frost. Therefore one doesn't have to be especially concerned about the frosts. Despite frost damages many perennials as well will renew their growth fast during the next warm weather. Trees and shrubs that are growing frost sensitive new leaves aren't yet opened their puds and and the species that are allready opened their puds are typically very frost tolerant. In to my mind comes only one exception, which have been allmost opened its puds locally; Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). If these puds will be damaged, so the tree can renew its growth well though.

However during the next night there will be such a sharp frost especially on the land surface of the frost sensitive areas, that sheltering of the perennials and bulbous plants grown far is worth to do in the areas in question. A frost cover optainable from a shop is ok. On scorching places sheltering of the new growth of frost sensitive species from the strong radiation of the sun after the frosty night can be a good idea to do as well, because the powerfull radiation of the sun can increase frost damages during the melting and straight after it. Tomorrow the weather will get cloudy straight after the frosty night though.

Telling about sheltering there's further this: in Finland newely planted (within two years) conifer trees and conifer shrubs (rhododendrons as well) are normally sheltered from the sun's scorch during March - April with different types of covers (sackcloths and the like) as the soil is yet frozen; the sun can dry up the plant, because it isn't able to suck water from the ground properly in the situation. Now the situation is completely different in southern Finland due to the ended wave of warm weather. On the places requiring sheltering the soil frost is completely melted allready several days ago. Therefore the sheltering is allready now unnecessary. However they are found further around, but they should rather be removed, because as the growing season is allready started as well they are merely just harmfull weight on the plants. In addition the forecasted night frosts aren't capable to freeze the ground again anymore not counted for couple of centimetres and even that is melted away every afternoon in southern Finland. In here we must remember, that despite the cool weather period of this phase nature is now living about the stage of the end of April for now.

This is one example of the fact, that in the future and allready now the finnish park and garden culture must be able to be flexible and to get use to act in new circumstances as the climate change proceeds. In the future adapting to tradition and to the things previously considered as good aren't always the best way to do things anymore, but one have to boldly experiment new things and methods and aply them according to situations. This means for example starting of the garden business at an earlier stage than it is used to after winter as circumstances are requiring accordingly. For example i met an unexpected and irritating situation last week as i wanted to buy a sack of fertilizer to the fertilizing task of my arboretum after my day job. The garden shop Muhevainen at the district of Leppävaara in Espoo was yet closed, as it should have been otherwise due to the conditions. Fortunaltely the garden shop Kehä I kukka nearby was open as a good example and i bought the sack there.
