Kevään pitkä ja lämmin harppaus kevättyökauden alkajaisena - The long and warm stride of spring at the opening of the spring task period

Korkeimmat lämpötilat mitataan tyypillisesti jo lumesta vapautuneilla alueilla.

Lämmin sää on jo sulattanut melkein kaiken viime viikon lumimyrskyn lumipeitteestä.

"talvena". Äärimmäisen jäättömät olosuhteet ilmenevät edelleen tästä. Normaalisti kevät alkaisi vasta nyt sulattaa kunnolla melkein kokonaan jäätyneitä meriä!

During the weekend there spreaded the waited warm air mass into Finland from the south and today the spring is really showing its beautifull side properly in an almost clear weather. Afternoon temperatures have risen now over +10 C for the first time in southern Finland. Locally even between +12 C and +14 C in inland areas (during afternoons the coast is cooled at this situation by a sea breeze already). The highest temperatures are measured typically in the areas already freed from the snow. The two previous nights as well have been rather mild as temperatures have remained couple of degrees above zero C in many places (especially by the coast) even in a rather clear weather, like during the last night.

The record mild winter brought into this situation as well its own spice, which this humid and warm middle latitude air mass have been emphazising well. Morning fogs are relating typically with this air mass at this time of the year. Now the record unfrozen (it should be yet mostly frozen normally) and therefore warmer than usually sea caused this morning a fog situation typical for autumn; there appeared fog strongly in inland areas, but by the sea there was only a bit of haze. After a normal winter fog situations would be even more common in many cases by the coast than in inland areas due to the early spring icecover on the sea. Rivers have been mainly unfrozen during the last week as well, but there have been evenly layered icecovers as well on lakes. Though, on them in streaming water places there have been further unusually large unfrozen areas considering the time of the year. Now the melting of lakes as well has accelerated into a wild false start; there will be expected water areas to be unfrozen record early.

The warm weather have already melted almost all of the snowcover created by the last week's blizzard. The soil was frozen for few centimetres during last week, but this wave of warm air will melt the soil completely until wednesday from the areas, which have had already now only little of snow. There may form locally very thin frosty soil layers only for mornings due to minor night frosts, but this will melt easily away already before the noon. This means now a possibility of unfrozen soil required spring tasks in gardens - parks and in my arboretum project partly from today onwards already, like I estimated last week. Thanks to that, I will begin a proper spring period from this week. A really early start!

This kind of warm weather will continue to wednesday, but after that there seems to be in the forecast somewhat of colder weather. Forecasts are yet a bit unclear regarding the strength of the colder weather. At this moment the case appears to be, that a high pressure in the east will weaken and there will strengthen a second high pressure in the northern side of Finland as forcing the low pressures forming in the west to the southwestern - southern side of Finland. Due to that the air flow will turn to the east after wednesday. However, a low pressure strengthening to the southwestern side of Finland might be turning winds back to the warmer southeasterly direction, but there would be coming precipitation at the same time. I believe now to the fact, that during weekend as well afternoon temperatures will stay above +5 C, night frosts will remain very minor and the possible precipitation will come mainly as rain. This way the proceeding of the spring would not stop anymore, but it would at the most just slow down a bit after wednesday... Thanks partially to the mild winter we are now even 3 - 4 weeks ahead of an average proceeding phase of the spring, although it was cold last week.

Update at 11:30 PM: Today's highest reading at the measurement places of Finnish Meteorological Institute has been confirmed +12,7 C measured in Pori; the news (unfortunately only in finnish) by Helsingin Sanomat. I looked just a moment ago this moment's reading here at the district of Tapiola in Espoo and it is yet the astonishing +7 C, although earlier in the evening it had time to be colder; +4 C. Changes of winds and cloudiness are influencing, but there would be coming a specially warm night... By the way, here (unfortunately only in finnish) is again one example of the record mild winter's influences; according (unfortunately only in finnish) to the Finnish Institute of Marine Research there have never been so little ice on the finnish sea areas during the examined time (since 1720!) than during the ended "winter" and for the first time in history icebreakers didn't do work even a single day at The Gulf Of Finland during the "winter" in question. Extremely iceless conditions are appearing further from this. Normally spring would start to melt properly the almost completely frozen sea areas only now!
