Tässä on pari huomioitavaa seikkaa päättyneeltä viikonlopulta siementen suhteen. Molemmat kuvat on otettu eilen. Alemmassa kuvassa on suuri määrä rusokirsikan (Prunus sargentii) siemeniä, joita olin säilyttänyt jääkaapissani yli kaksi vuotta. Keräsin ne kesällä 2006 Espoon Tapiolassa ja vasta nyt päätin ottaa ne käyttöön. Siemenet olivat olleet mädäntyneessä hedelmälihassaan, mutta ne vaikuttavat puhdistuksen jälkeen aivan hyviltä. Aion tulevina kolmena vuotena kylvää kolme pientä osaa kerrallaan. Nyt ensimmäiselle osalle on vuorossa n. kahden kuukauden kylmäkäsittely.

Ylemmässä kuvassa on muutama päivä sitten liotukseen laitetut neidonhiuspuun (Ginkgo biloba) siemenet. Vasemmassa purkissa on Exotic Gardenin siemenet ja oikeassa purkissa Arboretum Mustilan siemenet. Toisessa kaikki siemenet ovat uponneet ja toisessa kaikki ovat jääneet kellumaan yhtä lukuun ottamatta. Tästä voidaan päätellä siementen itävyyttä etenkin tällaisilla kookkailla siemenillä. Kelluminen merkitsee sitä, että siemenen sisus on jäänyt edelleen osittain kuivaksi ja siellä on sen takia ilmaa. Siinä tapauksessa itävyys on huono. Uponneet siemenet ovat imeneet hyvin lisää kosteutta poistaen samalla kellumista auttavaa ilmaa ja ne ovat siten osoittaneet itämiskykyä. Tässä vaiheessa voisin siis odottaa jopa yli viittä neidonhiuspuun tainta... Laitan siemenet tänään kylmäkäsittelyyn ja jään odottamaan hyvin kiinnostuneena myöhempää itämistä, koska tämä laji on aikaisemmin ollut hyvin vaikea tapaus kokeiluissani.



Here are couple matters to notice from the ended weekend regarding seeds. Both photos are taken yesterday. In the lower photo there are a big amount of Sargent Cherry (Prunus sargentii) seeds, which I had been storing in my fridge for over two years. I collected them in the summer 2006 at the district of Tapiola in Espoo and I decided to take them in use only now. The seeds had been in their rotten fruit flesh, but they are seeming perfectly well after the cleaning. I'll plan to sow three small parts at the time during next three years. Now, for the first part it is the turn of about two months long cold treatment.

In the upper photo there are Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba) seeds placed in soaking few days ago. In the left pot there are seeds of Exotic Garden in and in the right pot seeds of Arboretum Mustila. In one pot all the seeds have suncken and in the other all have remained floating except one. From this one can be able to estimate a germination ability of the seeds especially in the cases of these kinds of big seeds. The floating means the fact, that the inner part of the seed has remained further partly dry and it therefore contains air. In that case the germination ability will be bad. The suncken seeds have been sucking well more moisture removing at the same time floating helping air and they have been demonstrating therefore ability to germinate. So, at this phase I would be expecting even more than five seedlings of Maidenhair Tree... I will put the seeds to the cold treatment today and I will be waiting with a big interest for the later germination, because this species have been earlier a very difficult case in my experiments.
