Nyt tuli sopiva aika kertoa arboretumini asioista. Yksi suuri innoittaja tähän oli se, että olemme eläneet nyt todella historiallisia aikoja sään suhteen ja niinpä päätin tehdä merkinnän siihenkin liittyen.
Jopa n. kuukauteen Etelä-Suomessa ei ole nähty lunta ja maakin on ollut usean viikon ajan täysin sula, koska sään lämpimyys on ollut marraskuun lopussa ja etenkin nyt joulukuussa ennätyksellistä. Esim. Salossa tehtiin Itsenäisyyspäivänä joulukuun kaikkien aikojen lämpöennätys; +10,8 astetta! Lisäksi lämpötila on ollut nyt yleisesti koko Etelä-Suomessa ympäri vuorokauden useana päivänä melkein koko ajan yli +5 astetta (kasvukausi on siten tavallaan käynnissä) ja pakkasta ei ole ollut etelärannikolla sitten marraskuun alkupuolen.
Tämä on aiheuttanut monien ruohovartisten kasvien uuden kasvun nyt joulukuussa (kuten kuvassakin nähdään) ja esim. nurmikot ovat kasvaneet parisen senttiä ja ne vihertävät yleisesti. Maaseudun pelloilla rikkaruohot ovat kasvaneet uudestaan jopa niin paljon, että ko. pellot näyttävät paikoin kuin vihreiltä nummilta. Muutamat puuvartiset kasvit ovat myös alkaneet heräämään kuin kevääseen, koska marraskuun alussa oli lyhyt talvinen sääjakso; esim. haavan (Populus tremula) hedenorkot ovat tulleet silmuista esille kissavaiheisina. Kaikkea tätä ajatellessa tuntuu siltä kuin talven ilmasto olisi muuttunut täällä brittiläiseksi versioksi. Tai itse asiassa talvi on nyt kadonnut kokonaan ja on vain syksy.
Tämä on mahdollistanut sen, että aloitin tämän vuoden istutustyöt arboretumiini liittyen ja hauskaahan niitä oli tehdä näin joulukuussa. Itse arboretumalueella tein Itsenäisyyspäivänä silti vain parin taimen verran istutusta; tuohituomia (Prunus maackii). Jatkossa sään pysyessä yhä erittäin leutona ennusteiden mukaan on tarkoitukseni vielä jatkaa istuttamista. Kuvassa nähdään vanhalta taimikasvatuspaikalta Mäntsälästä uudelle paikalle tuotuja taimia kuvattuna samana päivänä. Ko. taimet olivat jääneet taannoin vanhalle paikalle, mutta nyt muilta kiireiltä ja poikkeuksellisen sään ansiosta päätin hoitaa asian. Talven ajaksi laitoin nuo taimet nippuun tuollaiseen kuoppaan eli valeeseen odottamaan kevään taimiruukkuihin laittamista. Kuopan täytin mullalla. Taimina ovat balkaninhevoskastanja (Aesculus hippocastanum) ja amurinkorkkipuu (Phellodenron amurense) vasemmalla. Tämä on kätevä tapa säilöä puiden ja pensaiden taimia talveksi, kun niille ei vielä tehdä syystä tai toisesta muuta maastanoston jälkeen.
Tässä on siis esimerkki siitä, että nyt voidaan tehdä puutarhatöitä aivan kuin syksyllä lokakuun alussa. Kaikenlaisia astiataimia voidaan istuttaa, perennoja jakaa ja sipulikasveja istuttaa. Älkää antako ajankohdan hämätä mieltänne, vaan tarttukaa nyt toimeen, jos joku hommista jäi kesken tai tekemättä aikaisemmin syksyllä. Luonto on suonut nyt hauskasti poikkeavan mahdollisuuden ja lisäajan puutarhan ja puiston töille. Nurmikonkin voi nyt aivan hyvin leikata, jos se jäi liian pitkäksi "viimeisen" leikkuukerran jälkeen. Näin etenkin, kun nurmikot ovat nyt jatkaneet kasvuaan.
Palaan vielä tässä kuussa kertomaan tänne mm. Flickr -projektistani. Nyt voin kertoa, että valitettavasti minulla ole ollut vielä mahdollisuutta laittaa suuria määriä kuvia ko. palveluun, koska en ole voinut vielä ostaa lisää kapasiteettia jopa tuhansille valokuvilleni...
Now came a suitable occasion to tell you things about my arboretum. One big inspiration came from the fact, that we have been living now really historical times considering the weather and i decided to create a post relating to that also.
For even about a month there haven't been snow in southern Finland and the soil has been also completely unfrozen for several weeks, because the warmth of the weather has been record breaking during the end of november and especially now in december. For example in Salo (in the southwestern corner of Finland) a new all time record of a high temperature of december was made in the Independence Day of Finland at 6th of december; the reading was +10,8 C! Further more the temperatures have commonly been more than +5 C allmost all the time around the clock for several days in a row in southern Finland (so the growing season is continuing in a way) and by the southern coast there haven't been frost since early november.
This has resulted many herbacious plants to start growing again (like seen in the picture as well) and for example lawns have been growing for a couple of centimetres and they are commonly green. In the fields in rural areas weedy plants have been growing again so much, that those fields are locally looking like green pastures. Some trees and shrubs have been awaking also like it's spring, because in early november there was a short wintry period; for example male catkins of European Aspen (Populus tremula) have been exposing themselves from the buds in a furry way. When thinking about all this, it feels like the climate of winter has changed into british version of it over here. Or in fact the winter has now disappeared completely and there is only autumn.
This has made possible the fact, that i started planting tasks of this year associated to my arboretum and funny it was working with those tasks in december. However in the actual arboretum area in the Independence Day (6th of december) i planted only couple of sprouts; Amur Chokecherry (Prunus maackii). In the future as the weather stays further very mild according to forecasts it is yet my intention to continue planting. In the picture we see young trees brought from the old nursery place in Mäntsälä (about 60 kilometres to the north-northeast from Helsinki) to the new nursery place as pictured in the same day. These trees had been remained in the old place for a some time, but now without other hurries and due to the unusual weather i decided to make it done. For the winter time i placed those trees in such pit in flocks to wait putting them in containers in the spring. I filled the pit with compost. The species are Common Horsechesnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and Amur Corktree (Phellodendron amurense) on the left. This is a handy way to store sprouts of trees and shrubs for the winter, when nothing else is done to them for the reason or the other after getting them out from the ground.
So in here is a example of the fact, that now garden related works can be done like in the autumn in early october. All kinds of container plants can be planted, herbacious plants can be divided and bulbous plants can be planted. Don't let the time of the season to blur your minds; go out and make things happen, if some task wasn't finished or started earlier in the autumn. Nature has granted now funnily deviant chance and extra time for the garden and park works. The lawn can also be cut now well enough, if it remained too long after "the last" cutting time. Especially so, when the lawns have been continuing to grow now.
