Kukkaan ja lehteen puhkeamassa (vasen puu oli jo osittain tehnyt niin) olevat rauduskoivut (Betula pendula) sunnuntaina 15.4.2007 Espoon Tapiolassa. - Silver Birches (Betula pendula) starting to leaf out and bloom (the left tree had allready done so partly) in sunday the 15th of April 2007 in the district of Tapiola in Espoo.
Tänään on viikon lämpimin päivä ja lämpötila on eteläisen Suomen sisämaassa taas +20 asteen tienoilla. Viime viikon puolelta eiliseen asti oli sen verran viileää ilmamassan ja runsaan pilvisyyden takia, että kasvukausi on edennyt aiemmin arvelemaani hitaammin. Niinpä kasvukauden etumatka tavanomaiseen aikatauluun on kaventunut vain 1 - 2 viikkoon.
Tässä vaiheessa etumatka näkyy kuitenkin selvästi tavanomaista vihreämpänä huhtikuun loppuna laajoilla alueilla Etelä-Suomessa. Siten vieläkin ihmetyttää Turun yliopiston Aerobiologian yksikön toteamus tämän päiväisessä siitepölytiedotteessaan; "Koivun siitepölyä on kaukokulkeutunut maahan Pohjois-Suomen eteläosia myöten. Paikallinen kukinta alkaa maan eteläosissa". Siis senhän me tiedämme, että tämä paikallinen koivun kukinta alkoi jo viime viikon tiistain tienoilla viimeistään Etelä-Suomessa. Mistä mahtaa johtua tämä ilmennyt vääristymä; onko ko. yksikkö laskenut koivun kukinnan alun teoreettisesti lämpösumman mukaan, mutta jättänyt väärin huomioimatta maaliskuussa kertyneen lämpösumman?... Tai seurantapuut on valittu kylmimmistä mahdollisista kasvupaikoista seurantapisteiden maastossa?... Olen pahoillani. Minua vain hieman häiritsee tällainen selvä leväperäisyys näinkin suuren auktoriteetin taholta, kun itse olen harrastanut pikkutarkkaa kasviseurantaa jo lapsuudesta asti; yli 25 vuotta.
Huomisesta lähtien sää viilenee niin paljon, että kasvukauden eteneminen uhkaa taas keskeytyä kuun vaihteessa ja viileys saattaa jatkua jopa useita päiviä toukokuun alussa... Joka tapauksessa tämäkään viileneminen ei ole erityisen uhkaava alkaneelle kasvien kasvulle. Puisto- ja puutarhatyöt voivat siis jatkua viilenemisestä ja halloista huolimatta. Itse olen ollut kuitenkin edelleen laiska arboretumprojektissani. Lähinnä kyse on ollut aikataulullisista seikoista. Kuitenkin viime vuoden katastrofaalisen huonojen olosuhteiden jälkeen olen päättänyt ottaa tänä vuonna projektin melko rennosti, mutta hyvän inspiraation sattuessa hyvien olosuhteiden kanssa yhteen toimintani voi olla hyvin reipasta. Tällä tavalla arvaamatonta tämä on.
Päivitys: 27.4.2007; tuo siitepölytiedote odottaa edelleen tänäänkin Etelä-Suomen koivujen kukinnan alkamista. Tiedotteen symbolit ilmaisevat runsasta siitepölymäärää, mutta se muka ei ole kotoperäistä alkuperää. Heidän sivuiltaan käy ilmi, että siitepölytiedote laaditaan ilman siitepölyanalyysin ja kaukokulkeumamallien pohjalta. Fenologiset havainnot itse kasveista jätetään siis sivuseikaksi ja se näkyy. Mielestäni fenologiset havainnot ovat merkittäviä myös tässä ja jos ei muuten niin ainakin uskottavan informaation takia. Eilen ja tänään koivut ovat olleet Etelä-Suomessa jo yleisesti täydessä kukassa ja kukkaan vasta puhkeavat puut ovat vähemmistössä. Ai niin, olen muuten itsekin koivuallergikko :)
Today is the warmest day of the week and the temperature is around +20 C in inland areas of southern Finland. From the last week through to yesterday it was so much cool due to the air mass and plentyfull cloudyness, that the growing season have been proceeding slower than i expected earlier. Therefore the growing season's lead as compared to an average schedule have decreased only into 1 to 2 weeks.
However at this phase the lead is showing as much more green looking end of April as compared to an usual situation in large areas of southern Finland. Therefore it is further odd, what the unit of Aerobiology of the University of Turku mentioned today in its pollen report; "Long-distance transported birch pollen has occurred up till southern N Finland. Local birch flowering is about to start in Souther Finland". Well, we do know, that this local birch flowering allready started around last week's tuesday at the latest in southern Finland. From what reason might this distortion be appeared from; has this unit in question been calculating the birch flowering theoretically from the effective temperature sum, but has left wrongly uncounted for the March accumulation of the effective temperature sum?... Or the observed trees are selected from the coldest possible localitys at the terrains of the observing posts?... I'm sorry. I am just a bit hampered by this kind of clear negligence from the direction of such a big authority, because i myself have been taken interest in a meticulous plant observing since childhood; more than 25 years.
From tomorrow onwards the weather will cool down in such a way, that the growing season is threathened to be interrupted again at the turn of the month and the coolness may be lasting even several days at the beginning of May... In any case, this cooling as well isn't especially threathening to the beginned growing of the plants. So the park and garden tasks can be continued despite the coolness and ground frosts. However i myself have been further lazy on my arboretum project. It has been mainly a question of schedules. However since the catastrophically bad circumstances of the last year i have decided to take the project in a rather easy way this year, but as a good inspiration will coincide with good circumstances my activity may be very brisk. It is in this way unpredictable.
Update: the 27th of April; that pollen report is further waiting even today for the Birches of southern Finland to start blooming. The symbols of the report are demonstrating abundant amounts of pollen, but supposedly that isn't native origin. There is revealed from their web pages, that the pollen report is made on the basis of a pollen analysis of the air and long-distance transportation models. So the phenological observations of the actual plants are left as an unessential matter and it shows. To my mind the phenological observations are important here as well and if not in anything else then at least for the sake of a credible information. Yesterday and today Birches have been in southern Finland allready commonly in full bloom and the trees only starting to bloom are in minority. Oh, by the way i am myself as well allergic to Birches :)
