Tänäkin vuonna on aika toivottaa hauskaa Vappua kukkatervehdyksen muodossa! Kuva on otettu eilen Hämeenlinnan keskustassa kävelykatu "Reskalla". Kuvassa on orvokkeja (Viola sp.), jotka ovat tyypillisiä kevään kausikasveja. Hallanarkoja kasveja ei voi vielä toukokuussa istuttaa, joten orvokit ovat niille hyviä vaihtoehtoja tänä aikana. Viime vuonna tässä samassa altaassa orvokit olivat tämän näköisiä.
Tänä vuonna juhlallisuuksia vietetään viime vuoden melko lämpimistä olosuhteista poiketen erittäin kylmässä säässä. Kylmää ilmamassaa on päässyt koko Suomeen jopa pohjoisnavalta saakka ja tämän päivän melko selkeästä säästä huolimatta päivälämpötila kohoaa vain n. +5 asteen tienoille tai vähän yli maan eteläosissa. Yöksi voimakas pohjoistuuli tyyntyy ja näyttää siltä, että eteläisimmässäkin Suomessa on useita asteita pakkasta etenkin sisämaassa. Kasvukausihan on jo ollut melko pitkällä, mutta parin viime päivän aikana se on ollut keskeytynyt. Ensi yön pakkanen saattaa olla alkaneelle kasvulle tämän kevään ankarin koettelemus. Pakkasvaurioita saattaa siis tulla. Esim. katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) on jo ehtinyt hiirenkorvalle koivujen tapaan ja melko varmasti ko. lehdet (ei koivujen lehdet) tuhoutuvat ensi yönä...
Toisaalta aikaisemminkin olen sanonut kasvien olevan myös yllättävän pakkasenkestäviä kasvun jo alettua, mutta tämä riippuu lajista, kasvupaikasta, kasvin alkuperästä jne. Onneksi moni hallanarkoja lehtiä kasvattava puu ja pensas on edelleen vasta nuppuasteella. Tätä kylmää jaksoa voi kestää koko tämän viikon (tänään on kylmin päivä), mutta esim. Weatheronlinen sivuilla ennustekartoissa on merkkejä mahtavasta lämpöaallosta tätä seuraavalla viikolla...
Mainitsen vielä lopuksi, että laitan vasta Vapun jälkeen kuvia itäneistä tämän kevään kylvöksistäni. Viime viikolla ottamani kuvat epäonnistuivat, koska kamerani macrokuvausominaisuudet ovat heikot enkä ole viitsinyt kuvailla vielä uudestaan. Osa lajeista on itänyt hyvin, mutta pettymyksiäkin ilmeni taas tuttuun tapaan. Nyt seuraa parin päivän nettipimento. Hauskaa Vappua!
It is time to wish merry "Vappu" ("The First of May" - a celebration of workers and students in Finland, at least originally) with a flower greeting also this year! The picture is taken yesterday in the center of Hämeenlinna in the promenade called "Reska". In the picture there's violets (Viola sp.), which are typical seasonal plants of spring (in Finland). The frost sensitive plants cannot be planted yet during May, so therefore violets are good alternatives to them at this time. Last year on this same pool the violets were looking like this.
This year the festivities are happening in a very cold weather as opposed to the rather warm circumstances of last year. A cold air mass have arrived to whole Finland even all the way from the North Pole and despite today's rather clear weather the daytime temperature will be only around +5 C or just little more in the southern parts of the country. The strong northerly wind will calm down until the night and it looks like there will be several degrees of frost even in the southernmost Finland especially in inland areas. We know that the growing season has allready proceeded rather far, but during couple of last days it has been interrupted. The frost of the next night might be the severest affliction to the beginned growth this spring. So there might be frost damages. For example Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) has reached allready a stage of unfolded leaves in the way of the Birches and rather certainly the leaves in question (not the Birch leaves) will be damaged during the next night...
On the other hand i have said before as well, that plants are also surprisingly frost tolerant as the growth has allready started, but this depends on the species, on the locality, on the origin of the plant and so on. Fortunately many trees and shrubs growing frost sensitive leaves are further only in the bud stage. This cold period can last all this week (today is the coldest day), but for example in the forecast maps of Weatheronline pages there are signs of a massive wave of warm weather in the week following this...
I mention to the end, that i will put only after the "Vappu" pictures of my germinated sowings of this spring. The pictures i took last week failed, because the marco photographing properties of my camera are weak and i haven't cared to photograph again yet. A part of the species have been germinated well, but there have been disappointments again as well in a usual way. Now it is time for a couple of days long net darkness. I wish merry "Vappu" to all of those, who know the celebration and will celebrate!
