Kentuckynkahvipuu - Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioica).


Yllä on kuvasarja siemenistä, jotka kylvin eilen. Osa niistä tosin odottaa vielä tämän päivän kylvämistä. Aikaisemmin mainitsemistani kylvettävistä lajeista päätin jättää kylvämättä tänä vuonna keisaripuun (Paulownia tomentosa) ja molemmat trumpettipuut (Catalpa ovata) ja (Catalpa bignonioides). Syynä siihen on se, että halusin siirtää työtaakkaa ensi vuodelle yhä enemmän ja nuo lajit ovat nopeakasvuisia, jolloin niiden kylvön voi hyvin siirtää. Yllä olevien lisäksi eilen kylvin isolehtikatsuran (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), mutta unohdin ottaa kuvan sen siemenistä. Tässä on kuitenkin kuva vuodelta 2005 toisen katsuralajin (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) siemenistä, jotka ovat käytännössä aivan saman näköisiä kuin ko. lajin. Nämä kuvat on otettu n. 50 cm:n etäisyydeltä. Tieto auttaa mittakaavan hahmottamisessa; alimmat siemenet ovat n. 2 sentin paksuisia.

Yllä olevien lajien siemenet olivat liotuksessa, koska siemenkuorten täytyy pehmetä ennen itämistä. Liotuksen myötä siemenet turpoavat huomattavasti veden päästessä siementen sisään. Tämä turpoaminen ei tosin koske jumaltenpuiden siemeniä. Osa siemenistä vaati eilen vielä siemenkuorten vioittamista, koska vesi ei muuten päässyt vaikuttamaan. Vioittamisen tein viilaamalla pienellä sahalaitaisella veitsellä ja pienten siementen kohdalla lohkaisemalla siemenestä palan mattoveitsellä. Ensin mainitussa tapauksessa siemen otetaan sormien väliin ja viilataan pieni viilto siemenkuoreen niin, että kuoren alta paljastuu siemenen sisus. Jälkimmäisessä tapauksessa siementä pidetään paikallaan kovaa alustaa vasten ja painetaan mattoveitsen kärjellä siemenen sivusta alas, jolloin pieni pala lohkeaa. Nämä ovat hieman kärsivällisyyttä vaativia ja hitaita toimenpiteitä, mutta varmempia ja turvallisempia verrattuna esim. rikkihappokäsittelyyn. Huomenna laitan näkyviin kuvat niistä siemenistä, jotka turposivat eniten liotuksessa. Näin pääsette vertaamaan, kuinka paljon siemenet voivat muuttua veden vaikutuksen myötä.

Tänä viikonloppuna Etelä-Suomeen on siis tiedossa lämmintä säätä ja kasvukausi etenee jo melko pitkin askelin kohti kesää; jo parin viime päivän aikana lämpösummaa on kertynyt lisää. Viimeistään sunnuntaina tai maanantaina käyn taimikasvatuspaikallani aloittamassa taimistotyöt. Kyseessä on silloin taimien vaihtoa isompiin purkkeihin, paikan siistimistä yms. toimintaa. Palaan ensi viikolla kuvien kanssa siihen asiaan. Ensi viikolla viimeistelen myös arboretumalueeni lannoituksen ja pyrin ottamaan alueelta samalla lisää kuvia.

Muuten, edellisessä merkinnässä mainittu sade jäi niin vähäiseksi, että lannoiterakeet eivät ole vieläkään alkaneet liueta. Ko. sade tuli keskisessä ja pohjoisessa Suomessa lumena ja lunta tuli paikoin jopa yli 10 cm. Etelä-Suomi ja kaikki blogeissani esiintyvät paikat kuitenkin säästyivät tältä takatalvelta. Mutta nyt kevät ottaa suuren vallan koko Suomessa.



Above there is a photoseries of the seeds i sowed yesterday. A part of them are yet waiting for today's sowing though. From the to be sowed species i mentioned earlier i decided not to sow this year seeds of Foxglove Tree / Empress Tree (Paulownia tomentosa) and both Catalpas (Catalpa ovata) and (Catalpa bignonioides). The reason for this is the fact, that i wanted to move workload to the next year further more and those species are fast growing, so the sowing of them can be postponed finely. In addition to the species above i sowed yesterday Broad-leafed Katsuratree (Cercidiphyllum magnificum), but i forgot to take a picture of its seeds. However here is a picture from the year 2005 of the seeds of an other Katsuratree species (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), which are just the same looking in practise as the seeds of the species in question. These photos are taken from the distance of about 50 centimetres. The information helps with the picturing of the scale; the lowest seeds are about 2 centimetres thick.

The seeds of the species above were in soaking, because the seed coats of them must be softened before germination. Due to the soaking the seeds swell significantly as the water enters the seeds. This swelling doesn't aply to seeds of Tree-of-heaven though. A part of the seeds required yet yesterday a damaging of the seed coats, because otherwise the water didn't have a change to affect. I made the damaging as filing with a small serrate knife and in the case of small seeds as breaking a piece off the seed with a carpet knife. In the firstly mentioned case one takes the seed within one's fingers and one files a small cut onto the seed coat in such a way, that the seed's inner matter is exposed under the coat. In the latter case one holds the seed in place against a hard platform and one presses down the side of the seed with the tip of the carpet knife, where a small fracture will split. These are measures requiring a bit of patience and they are a bit slow, but more secure and certain as compared for example to a sulphuric / an acid treatment. Tomorrow i will put pictures on display of those seeds, which were swollen the most in the soaking. In this way you'll have a chance to compare, how much seeds can alter due to an influence of the water.

So during this weekend there will be warm weather in southern Finland and the growing season takes rather big steps towards the summer allready; during last couple of days allready the effective temperature sum has been added more. At the latest in sunday or in monday i will visit my nursery to start tasks there. The tasks in question will be then changing plants into bigger containers, tiding up the place and tasks as such. I will return to that matter with pictures during the next week. During the next week i will also finish the fertilizing in my arboretum area and i'll aim to take more pictures from the area at the same time.

By the way, the precipitation mentioned in the previous post remained so small, that the fertilizer grains haven't been started to dissolve even now. The precipitation in question came in the form of snow in central and northern Finland and there came snow locally even more than 10 centimetres. However southern Finland and all places appearing in my blogs were escaped from this late wintry weather. But now the spring takes over in a big way in whole Finland.
