Hallaraportti - A ground frost report

Viime yö oli Etelä-Suomessa jälleen kylmä. Eilen pohjoisesta virtasi matalapaineen jälkeen sen verran viileää ilmamassaa, että päivälämpötilat jäivät ensimmäistä kertaa alle +15 asteen melko selkeässäkin säässä. Illalla sää alkoi seljetä ja tyyntyä siihen malliin, että jännitin hallatuhojen viimeinkin iskevän taimistollani.

Olen nyt katsonut Ilmatieteenlaitoksen sivuilta paikkakuntakohtaisia säähavaintoja (tässä esimerkkinä Helsinki), joissa on mm. lämpötilakäyrät viimeisiltä 24 tunnilta reaaliajassa; sisältävät myös ennusteen 5 lähipäivälle. Näyttää siltä, että lämpötilat eivät laskeneetkaan sen kylmemmiksi (vaikka sääennusteissa niin peloteltiin) kuin aikaisemmin tässä kuussa lievinä hallaöinä. Tampereen seudulla oli paikoin yöpakkasta, mutta esim. Helsingin seudulla ilman lämpötila pysyi nollan yläpuolella; hallaa oli silti Espoon Tapiolassakin alavilla avoimilla paikoilla. On siis toiveita, että arat kasvini olisivat edelleen selvinneet hyvin täpärästi ja niiden valmistautuminen talveen saisi vielä lisäaikaa. Tämä täytyy kuitenkin vielä käydä tarkistamassa...

Nyt viikonloppuna Suomeen saapuu voimakas matalapaine lännestä tuulineen ja sateineen, joten hallanvaara väistyy toistaiseksi. Ilmamassa ei kuitenkaan lämpene merkittävästi; päivälämpötilat jäävät alle +15 asteen, mutta yölämpötilat kohoavat yli +5 asteen. Melko runsaat sateet saavat aikaan nyt sen, että monilla kasveilla ruska viivästynee edelleen.



The last night was again cold in southern Finland. Yesterday there flowed such a cool air mass from the north after a low pressure, that the afternoon temperatures remained for the first time under +15 C even during a rather clear weather. In the evening the weather started to clear and calm down in such a way, that I was nervous about frost damages finally to hit at my nursery.

I have now checked out local weather observations (here is for example Helsinki's report) from the pages of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, where there are temperature graphs from the last 24 hours in real time amongst others; includes forecasts for the next 5 days as well. It looks like the temperatures didn't drop any colder (allthough it was intimidated so in the forecasts) than during the nights of weak ground frost earlier this month. There was locally frost in the air around the city of Tampere, but for example around Helsinki area the air temperature remained above zero C; there was ground frost though at the Tapiola district of Espoo as well in open low ground areas. So there are hopes, that my sensitive plants would have been gone through further very narrowly and their prepairing for the winter would have yet more time. However this must be checked out yet...

Now during the weekend there will come a rather strong low pressure from the west into Finland with its winds and rains, so therefore the risk of ground frost will disappear for now. However the air mass won't warm up significantly; the afternoon temperatures will remain under +15 C, but the night temperatures will rise above +5 C. The rather profuse rains will cause now the fact, that fall colours may delay further on many plants.
