Eiliset lumisateet jäivät ennustettua selvästi vähäisemmiksi; Etelä-Suomen alueella pääasiassa vain 1 - 3 cm ja rannikolla ei sitäkään; idässä ei edes satanut. Kuvassa nähdään Hämeenlinnassa sataneen lumen määrä. Kuva on otettu launantaina sateen jälkeen ja siinä on tyypillisesti kesäkukkien tilalle talveksi istutettuja syyskellokanervia (Erica gracilis). Tänään selkeässä säässä lumet ovat sulaneet aurinkoisilta paikoilta, mutta maa on ollut edelleen jo ohuesti roudassa. Ensi yö on hyvin kylmä (lämpötilat etelärannikolla -5 ja -10 asteen välillä ja sisämaassa paikoin jopa -10 ja -15 asteen välillä - lännessä pakkanen on heikkoa) ja sen myötä maa jäätyy entistä enemmän. Pienet vesistöt (lähinnä lammet ja pienet järvet) saavat myös ensimmäisen ohuen jääpeitteensä. Tyyni ja selkeä sää aiheuttaa yöllä myös sen, että lämpötilaerot muodostuvat paikallisesti erittäin vaihteleviksi; laaksoissa ja painanteissa on kylmintä.
Viimeisimmät säätiedot (saan tiedot sivun oikean laidan säälinkeistä) kertovat matalapaineiden pysyvän pääasiassa Suomen länsipuolella alkavalla viikolla, mutta niiden myötä sää muuttuu huomisesta alkaen epävakaiseksi. Maanantaista lähtien lämpötilat pysyvät yötä päivää nollan tienoilla ja ajoittain vähän sen yläpuolella, selvimmin rannikolla. Sateet eivät olisi kovin runsaita ja ne tulisivat rannikolla lähinnä vetenä ja vain sisämaassa olisi mahdollisuutta kunnon lumipeitteen muodostumiselle. Sulamistakin tapahtuu ajoittain, joten lumipeitteen muodostuminen ei ole varmaa... Jos runsasta suojalunta on tiedossa, niin onneksi tulevan yön pakkanen auttaa viimeisiä lehtiä varisemaan tehokkaasti pois ennen sitä, kun tiistaina näyttää olevan myös erittäin tuulista. Ensi yön pakkanen jäädyttää maan niin paljon, että alkavan viikon vain vähän nollan yläpuolella olevat lämpötilat eivät jaksa sulattaa kaikkea routaa pois; vaikuttaa edelleen siltä, että talvitauko olisi alkamassa lopullisesti puutarha- ja puistotöissä (koskee etenkin istutustöitä) ainakin sisämaassa...
Yesterday's snowing remained much weaker than forecasted; in the area of southern Finland only 1 - 3 centimetres and by the southern coast not even that; it didn't even snow in the east. In the photo we see the amount of snow fallen in Hämeenlinna. The photo is taken in saturday after the snowfall and there is typically Heathers (Erica gracilis) planted to replace the seasonal summer flowers (it's a common tradition in Finland) for the winter. Today in the clear weather snow has been melted on sunny places, but the soil has been further thinly freezed up allready. The next night is very cold (temperatures by the southern coast between -5 C and -10 C and in inland areas locally even -10 C to -15 C - in the west the frost will be weak) and due to that the soil will freez up even more. Small water areas (mainly ponds and small lakes) will get their first thin layers of ice as well. The calm and clear weather will cause at night also the fact, that differences in temperatures will be locally very variable; it will be the coldest in valleys and in depressions.
The latest weather information (I get the information from the weather links on the page's right side) tells that, low pressures will remain mainly in the western side of Finland during the starting week, but due to them the weather will turn unstable from tomorrow onwards. From monday onwards temperatures will be night and day around zero C and occasionally a bit over that, the most clearly by the coast. The precipitation wouldn't be especially profuse and it would be coming mainly as rain by the coast and only in inland areas there would be a chance for a proper snow cover to form. There will happen melting as well occasionally, so the forming of a snow cover won't be certain... If there will be coming a lot of wet thaw snow, fortunately the next night's frost will then help the last leaves to fall effectively away before that, as there seems to be very windy as well during tuesday. The next night's frost will freeze the soil so much, that the starting week's temperatures only little over zero C won't be able to melt all of the soil frost away; it seems like the winter pause would be starting now for good in garden and park tasks (concerns especially planting tasks) at least in inland areas...
