Viime yö oli vaihteeksi melko kylmä, mutta edelleen suuressa osassa Etelä-Suomea jäätiin -10 asteen lämpimämmälle puolelle. Esim. Hämeenlinnassa alin lukema oli -8 asteen paikkeilla. Helsingissä lämpötila oli noin -5 asteessa. Tämä oli viikon kylmin hetki, sillä leudot länsi - lounaistuulet pitävät tästä iltapäivästä lähtien lämpötilat etenkin rannikolla enimmäkseen nollan yläpuolella useita päiviä. Viime torstain - perjantain leuto sää ei sulattanut pääkaupunkiseudulta aivan kaikkia lumia, mutta parin lähimmän päivän aikana se vaara on olemassa, vaikka matalapaineiden sadealueista voi veden lisäksi tulla ajoittain luntakin; sisämaassa sateiden lumisempi muoto saattaa varmistaa ainakin vähäisen lumipeitteen siellä vielä tälläkin viikolla leudosta säästä huolimatta...
Viime lauantaina myrsky jäi selvästi Suomen eteläpuolelle, mutta ensi perjantain aikana Etelä-Suomea saattaa uhata ankara myrsky; mahdollisesti jopa voimakkaampi kuin tämän kuun 19. päivänä ollut. Tuhot voisivat olla siinä tapauksessa rankimmasta päästä Suomen myrskyhistoriassa. Tilannetta täytyy seurata tarkkaan tulevina päivinä! Myrskymatalapaineen reitti näyttää sateiden olomuodon suhteen sellaiselta, että leudot lounaistuulet olisivat vaikuttamassa Etelä-Suomessa. Niinpä mahdolliset runsaat sateet tulisivat rannikolla enimmäkseen vetenä ja lähinnä vain sisämaassa sateet tulisivat ainakin aluksi lumena ja paikallisesti kertyisi siten paljonkin märkää lunta. Palaan asiaan ja kannattaa seurata tätä blogia.
Tuossa mainitussa blogissa on pohdittu hyvin tämän talven jopa ennätyksellistä leutoutta, kun se oikea suomalainen vanhan ajan talvi näyttäisi jättävän ainutlaatuisella tavalla Etelä-Suomen kokonaan väliin. Tuossa blogissa otetaan vertailuun vuoden 1987 tammikuun ennätyspakkaset tämän talven leudon sään kanssa ja ko. karttakuvista näyhdään hyvin tilanteiden erilaisuus. Itse muistan hyvin tuon tammikuun 1987. Ne ajat olivat todella erikoisia senkin takia, kun vastaava äärimmäisen kylmä pakkastalvi oli ollut vain kaksi vuotta aikaisemmin. Silloin 1985 alkuvuonna puhuttiin siitä, että menee ainakin 100 vuotta, ennen kuin yhtä kylmä talvi tulee. No, meni kaksi vuotta ja tuli vieläkin kylmempi talvi (tammikuu), jolloin esim. Helsingissä mitattiin kaikkien aikojen kylmimmäksi lukemaksi -34,3 astetta!
Asuin silloin Mäntsälässä ja kävin paikallista yläasteen koulua. Muistan, kuinka esim. eräässä koulurakennuksessa (vanha puutalo tosin) luokkahuoneiden lämpötilat laskivat +10 asteeseen tehokkaasta lämmityksestä huolimatta ja oppitunnilla sai käyttää ulkotakkeja, pipoja ja hanskoja. Mäntsälässä pakkasta oli monta päivää (n. 5) -30 ja -37 asteen välillä koko ajan. Se pakkanen aiheutti paljon kasvituhoja ja mm. omenapuita kuoli paikoin kokonaan puutarhoista. Se on nykyisten säiden valossa todella uskomatonta; tänä talvena pakkanen ei ole näillä seuduilla laskenut kertaakaan -10 asteen kylmemmälle puolelle ja muutenkin pakkanen on ollut harvinaista. Totaalisesti toinen ääripää siis vallitsee. Tämä lienee ensimmäinen kerta Etelä-Suomen tunnetussa historiassa, kun helmikuuhun mennessä ei ole ollut tämän kylmempää ja "talvi" alkaa kohta olla ohi...
Tässä kaikki näistä sääasioista, mutta palaan varmasti pian asiaan ja peilaan tilanteita oman alani suhteen. Sää sattuu olemaan näinä aikoina erittäin tärkeä puheenaihe, kun elämme siinä historiallisia aikoja. Niitä aikoja, jolloin ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutukset alkoivat ensimmäistä kertaa olla todella tuntuvia ja havaittavia. Monet yrittävät edelleen panna tätä vain "normaalien vaihtelujen" piikkiin, mutta viimeiset kaksi vuotta ovat olleet erittäin tärkeä esimerkki vääjäämättömän kehityksen tuomista vaikutuksista. Jossakin vaiheessa niiden oli pakko alkaa näkyä ja nyt sen aika on tullut!
The last night was rather cold for a change, but further in a large area of southern Finland temperatures remained on the warmer side of -10 C. For example in Hämeenlinna the lowest reading was around -8 C. In Helsinki the temperature was about -5 C. This was the coldest moment of the week, because mild westerly - southwesterly winds will keep from this afternoon onwards temperatures above zero C for the most part especially by the coast for several days. The mild weather at last thursday - friday didn't melt quite all snow at the capital city district (Helsinki), but during next couple of days that risk will be exiting, allthough there might be coming occasionally snow as well from low pressure's precipitation areas in addition to rain; in inland areas a more snowy form of precipitation might be securing at least a minor snow cover over there during this week as well despite the mild weather...
Last saturday the storm remained clearly to the southernside of Finland, but during next friday southern Finland might be threatened by a severe storm; possibly even stronger than the one at this month's 19th day. In that case damages would be on the roughest side of Finland's storm history. The situation must be observed carefully during coming days! Regarding the form of precipitation the path of the storm low pressure appears to be such, that mild southwesterly winds would be affecting. Therefore the possible profuse precipitation would be coming mostly as rain and mainly just in inland areas the precipitation would be coming at least at the beginning as snow and therefore there would be accumulating locally a lot of wet snow. I will return to the matter and it is worth to observe this blog (unfortunatelly only in finnish, but a lot of pictures).
In that mentioned blog there is pondered well this winter's even record breaking mild conditions, as that real finnish winter of good old times appears to leave southern Finland behind completely in an unique way. In that blog there is compared the record breaking frosts of January 1987 with this winter's mild weather and in the map pictures in question the difference of the situations are well seen. I remember myself well that January 1987. Those times were really peculiar also for the fact, that a corresponding extremely cold frosty winter had been only two years earlier. Then at early 1985 there were talks about the fact, that how there will pass at least 100 years, before equally cold winter will arrive. Well, there went two years and there came even colder winter (January), when for example the coldest reading of all time in Helsinki became -34,3 C!
I lived then in Mäntsälä (60 kilometres north from Helsinki) and I went to local basic high school. I remember, how for example in one school building (an old wooden house, though) temperatures of school rooms dropped to +10 C despite an effective heating and during lessons we were allowed to use coats, caps and gloves. In Mäntsälä there was frost between -30 C and -37 C all the time for several days (about 5). That frost caused a lot of plant damages and for example appletrees were killed locally completely from gardens. That is unbelievable in the light of the present weather conditions; during this winter temperatures haven't been dropped a single time below -10 C in these regions and otherwise as well frosts have been rare. So, totally another extremity prevails. This is perhaps the first time in the known history of southern Finland, that until February there haven't been colder than this and "winter" is starting to be over in a moment...
That was all about these weather matters, but I will surely return to the matter soon and I will reflect situations according to my profession. The weather happens to be in these times a very important discussion subject, as we are living historical times in there. Those times, when the influence of the climate change started to be really felt and observed for the first time. Many are further trying to put that into the case of only "normal variations", but the last two years have been a very important example of the undeniable development's influences. At some point they were forced to become visible and now that time has come!
