Myrsky on nyt alkanut ja tässä on sen seuraamiseen mielenkiintoiset linkit; sadetutka ja kelikamerat. Pahimmat tuulet ovat Etelä-Ruotsissa ja Baltian maissa matalapaineen eteläpuolella, joten Etelä-Suomi säästyy pahimmalta. Tuuli tulee aiheuttamaan silti tuhoa paikoin täälläkin ja kova tuuli jatkuu vielä huomennakin länsi - luoteistuulena.
Tuhot ovat tyypillisesti kaatuvia puita ja rikkoutuvia kattoja. Kaatuvat puut voivat aiheuttaa sähkökatkoja kaatuessaan sähkölinjoille. Erittäin leuto sää on helpottanut tilannetta tuulituhojen syntymiselle, koska maa on sulanut ja se on erittäin märkää. Puiden juuret ovat siis varsin löyhässä verrattuna kuivaan tai jäätyneeseen maahan. Havupuut ovat ymmärrettävästi suuremmassa vaarassa kaatua kuin alastomat lehtipuut.
Kelikameroista näemme parhaillaan vesi- ja lumisateen rajan Etelä- ja Keski-Suomessa. Sateet ovat paikoin runsaita, joten vesisadealueella on tulvien riski ja lumisadealueella puihin uhkaa kertyä tuulituhoja täydentävästi raskasta märkää lunta (lämpötilat ovat sen verran lähellä nollaa tai aavistuksen sen yläpuolella). Tuulen ei tarvitse olla edes kovin voimakasta, kun toispuoleisesti lumiset puut alkavat taipua tuulen suuntaan ja olla vaarassa katketa tai kaatua.
Hyvin leuto sää sulatti joista kaikki vähäiset jäät ja jo ennen tätä vesisadetta esim. Vantaan- ja Keravanjoet pääkaupunkiseudulla olivat huomattavan paljon yli tavanomaisen tason. Koska sää ei kylmene pakkaselle vielä sunnuntaina ja koska sulassa maassa vesi pääsee liikkumaan hyvin (siis pinnalta myös maan sisään ja maan sisässä), on tulvavaara ilmeinen parin seuraavan päivän aikana näiden sateiden takia.
Suomenlahden rannalla on ollut vain siellä täällä vähän ohutta jäätä, jonka tämä voimakas tuuli hajottaa nyt helposti kasoihin rannoille monin paikoin. Sama koskee sellaisia Etelä-Suomen järviä, joissa leuto sää on pitänyt jäästä avoimia ulapoita, joihin pystyy muodostumaan jäätä hajottavaa aallokkoa. Niissä pienissä järvissä, joissa leutoudesta huolimatta on säilynyt yhtenäinen (vaikkakin ohut) jääkerros, jäät pysyvät tuulesta huolimatta ehjinä. Joka tapauksessa myrsky pienentää jäätilannetta huomattavasti lisää ja vesistöt muuttuvat yhä erikoisemman jäättömiksi ajankohtaan nähden.
Lopuksi vielä uutta tietoa sään tulevasta kehityksestä ja sen vaikutuksista. Tässä vaiheessa jokaiset leutoa säätä edelleen ilmentävät tiedot alkavat olla äärimmäisen painavaa historiankirjoitusta ja siksi niitä pitää kirjata ahkerasti ylös. Eli: matalapaine jää Suomen ylle huomenna ja se siirtyy alkuviikolla Suomen itäpuolelle. Sen takia sää alkaa pakastua ja saadaan lumisadetta ensi viikon alussa. Heikko pakkanen (noin -5 asteen tienoilla etelässä) joutuu kuitenkin väistymään laajasti jo torstaina lämpöasteiden tieltä, kun voimakkaat lounais - länsituulet valtaavat alaa pohjoisella Atlantilla jatkuvan hyvin aktiivisen matalapainetoiminnan takia.
Edelleen säilyy siis tilanne, jossa suuressa osassa eteläistä Suomea vain tammikuun alussa ollut pakkasjakso voidaan määritellä talveksi. Olemme hyvää vauhtia lähestymässä lyhyimmäksi jäävän termisen talven tilannetta tunnetussa säähistoriassa... Riippuen tulevan leudon jakson voimakkuudesta ja pituudesta (en ihmettele, vaikka se kestäisi koko helmikuunkin), mahdollisuudet sulan maan puisto- ja puutarhatöihin voivat historiallisella tavalla tulla taas esiin jo n. viikon kuluttua. Se merkitsee sitä, että esim. lepotilaisia astiataimia voi istuttaa aivan hyvin. Sipulikasvien kanssa on kuitenkin niin ja näin, sillä varhaisimpien lajien kohdalla kasvu on jo alkamassa. Jopa sieniä on jo nähty!
Päivitys klo. 21:15: Kova tuuli on nyt laantunut ja kääntynyt etelästä lounaaseen täällä Espoon Tapiolassa, kun matalapaineen keskus on saapunut lähelle. Samalla paikalle ehti tulla lämpimämpää ilmaa; iltapäivällä oli vain +2 astetta ja sade tuli ajoittain räntänä (maahan ei jäänyt lunta ollenkaan), mutta nyt illalla lämpötila kävi jopa +4 asteessa. Sadekuurot jatkuvat ja matalapaineen keskuksen siirryttyä, on yöstä lähtien odotettavissa toinen kovan tuulen (lännestä - luoteesta) vaihe ja mahdollisesti lisää tuhoja Etelä-Suomessa. Eniten lunta on satanut Kaakkois-Suomen sisämaassa, mutta lännempänä sisämaan tuoreet lumet ehtivät taas sulaa monin paikoin.
Päivitys 20.1.2008 klo. 9:15: Tuuli on jälleen voimistunut, mutta se on nyt selvästi heikompaa kuin eilen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa. Tuulituhoja ei siis ole enää odotettavissa. Lämpötila on täällä Espoon Tapiolassa vielä +2 astetta, mutta tästä sää alkaa hitaasti kylmenemään ja huomenna saadaan vähän lumisadetta. Uusimmat tiedot torstain lauhtumisesta kertovat sitä, että leutous jää heikommaksi ja lyhyemmäksi kuin miltä aikaisemmin näytti. Nyt lännen matalapaineet näyttävät ottavan eteläisemmän reitin suoraan kohti Etelä-Suomea. Tämä tarkoittaa mahdollisesti hurjia sääoloja alkavan viikon lopulla; noin kaksi ankaraa myrskyä näyttää saapuvan (suurin vaara jälleen Suomen eteläpuolella...) ja runsaita sateita saatetaan saada etelärannikollakin lumena. Mahdollisesti tulisi siis paksu lumikerros Etelä-Suomeen. Matalapaineiden sarjan jälkeen sunnuntaista alkaen tulisi kylmä pohjoistuuli joksikin aikaa... Näin saattaisi sittenkin alkaa tähän mennessä talvisin jakso. Tilanteiden kehittyminen on kuitenkin vielä epäselvä.
Päivitys 20.1.2008 klo. 12:15: Saavuin Hämeenlinnaan ja matkalla havaitsin Vantaanjoen olevan tulvakorkeudessa, kun eräälle pellolle oli muodostunut pieni järvi joen viereen. Myrsky toi tämän lisäksi vain paikoin kaatuneita puita ja muutamalle tuhannelle taloudelle lyhyitä sähkökatkoja. Lumisadealueella oli muutamia liikenneonnettomuuksia. The storm has now started and here are interesting links to observing it; weather radar and weather cameras. The worst winds are in southern Sweden and in Baltic states in the southern side of the low pressure and therefore southern Finland will be spared from the worst. Though, the wind will cause local damage here as well and the hard wind will continue also tomorrow as in the form of a westerly - northwesterly wind.
Damages are typically falling trees and breaking roofs. Falling trees can cause power-failures, when fallen onto power lines. The very mild weather has helped the situation for wind damages to appear, because the soil is melted and it is very wet. So, roots of the trees are rather loosely entact as compared to a dry or a frozen ground. Conifer trees are understandible in a greater danger to fall than the naked broadleave trees.
From the weather cameras we see at the moment the limit of rain and snowing in southern and central Finland. The precipitation is locally profuse and therefore there is a risk for floods in the area of rain and in the area of snowing there is a risk for heavy and wet snow gathering on the trees (temperatures are that much near zero C or a hint above it) as an adding feature to wind damages. Winds doesn't have to be even especially strong, when the trees othersidedly snowy will be bending along the direction of the wind and will be at risk for breaking down or fall.
The very mild weather melted all minor ice from rivers and already before this rain for example waters in Vantaanjoki and Keravanjoki rivers in the capital city region were significantly over usual levels. Because the weather doesn't cool down frosty yet on sunday and because water can be able to run well in the unfrozen soil (so, from the surface also into the ground and inside the ground), therefore the risk of floods is evident during couple of next days due to these rains.
On the shores of The Gulf Of Finland there have been only a bit of ice here and there, which this strong wind will break up now into piles onto the shores in many places. The same concerns such southern Finland's lakes, where the mild weather has been keeping ice free areas in the open, where there can form waves breaking the ice. On those small lakes, where there have been remaing an even layer of ice (allthough a thin one), the ice will remain entact despite the wind. In any case the strom will decrease the ice situation significantly more and the water areas will become furthermore iceless in a peculiar way considering the time of the year.
To the end new information about the coming developments of the weather and its influences. At this phase every information illustrating further the mild weather are starting to be extremely heavy history writing and therefore they must be written down busily. So: the low pressure will remain across Finland tomorrow and it will move to the eastern side of Finland during the early week. Due to that the weather starts to freeze and there will be snowing early next week. However, the weak frost (about -5 C in the south) will have to move away widely already at thursday from the way of above zero C temperatures, as strong southwesterly - westerly winds will conquer grounds due to a very active low pressure activity across the northern Atlantic.
So, there will further be remaing the situation, where in a large part of southern Finland only the early January's frosty period can be defined as winter. We are approaching with a good speed the situation of a thermal winter remaining the shortest in the known weather history... Depending of the strength and length of the coming mild period (I won't be wondering, allthough it would last for all February as well), possibilities for park and garden tasks of unfrozen soil may be coming present again in a historical way already in about a week's time. That will mean the fact, that for example dormancy staged container plants can be planted entirely well. However, with bulbous plants it is so and so, because in the cases of the earliest species the growth is already starting. Even mushrooms have already been seen!
Update at 9:15 PM: The hard wind has now calmed down and turned from the south to the southwest here in the district of Tapiola in Espoo, as the center of the low pressure has arrived near. At the same time a warmer air had time to come to the scene; in the afternoon there was only +2 C and the precipitation came occasionally as sleet (there remained no snow on the ground at all), but now in the evening the temperature peaked even at +4 C. Showers continue and as the low pressure center has been moved, there is expected the second phase of hard winds (from the west - northwest) from the night onwards and possibly more damages in southern Finland. The biggest amounts of snow has fallen in southeastern Finland's inland areas, but in the more westerly areas the inland's fresh snow had time to melt again in many places.
Update at the 20th of January 2008 at 9:15 AM: The wind has picked up again, but it is now clearly weaker than yesterday in the first phase. So, wind damages aren't expected anymore. The temperature is yet +2 C here in the district of Tapiola in Espoo, but from here the weather starts to slowly get colder and tomorrow will come a bit of snowing. The newest information about the thursday's weather getting milder tells the fact, that the mildness will remain weaker and shorter than what it appeared to be earlier. Now the westerly low pressures appear to take more southerly path straight towards southern Finland. This will mean perhaps severe weather conditions during the latter part of the starting week; about two severe storms appear to arrive (the most dangerous conditions again in the southern side of Finland...) and profuse precipitation might be coming as snow even by the southern coast. So there would be coming perhaps a thick layer of snow to southern Finland. After the series of low pressures there would be coming a cold northerly wind for a time starting from sunday... In this way there appears to be starting after all the most wintry period so far. However, developments of the situations are yet unclear.
Update at the 20th of January 2008 at 12:15 PM: I arrived to Hämeenlinna and on my way I noticed the Vantaanjoki river to be in a flood height, as there was formed a small lake onto a field beside the river. The storm brought in addition to this only local fallen trees and short power-failures to few thousands of households. There were few traffic accidents in the area of snowing. Here is yet a news of Iltasanomat paper about the storm with a video (the text is only in finnish). That's all about this matter.
