Talvisen myrskyn vuoro - The turn of a wintry storm

Tänään on mielenkiintoinen sääpäivä sekä sään itsensä suhteen että sen valokuvaamisen suhteen. Tämä kaikki alkoi äsken ehkä kaikkien aikojen parhaalla aamuruskotilanteella, jonka olen kokenut ja saanut valokuvattua. Se enteili tämän päivän hurjaa lumimyrskyä. Täällä Espoon Tapiolassa sade voi muuttua iltapäivän aikana enemmän rännän ja veden suuntaan ja yöksi sää lauhtuu plusasteille, mutta lunta saattaa tulla yli 10 senttiä täälläkin. Joka tapauksessa nyt käytännössä koko Etelä-Suomessa on käynnistynyt talven ensimmäinen kunnon lumimyrsky.

Tuulet ovat tänään myös merkittäviä, sillä on odotettavissa viime lauantain kaltaista myrskyä. Tuulituhot ovat tänään siis mahdollisia tässä okluusiorintaman ylityksessä. Maa on nyt jäätynyt muutamia senttejä (viime yönä oli pakkasta noin -5 astetta), mutta niin vähäinen jää hyvin märässä maassa ei ole vielä kunnollinen hidaste puiden kaatumisille. Päivitys klo. 14:20: Tällä hetkellä lumisade on Espoon Tapiolassa voimakkaimmillaan. Muutama sentti on jo tullut ja lumi on hieman nuoskaista tyypiltään, koska lämpötila on nollassa. Sen takia tämä lumi ei kovin pahasti kinostu kovasta tuulesta huolimatta. Tämä lumityyppi tarttuu puiden oksiin melko hyvin, vaikka tuuli on kovaa. Niinpä lumen kertyminen puihin voi pahentaa paikoin tuulituhojen riskiä lähituntien aikana nollakelien alueilla.

Päivitys klo. 18:45: Lumimyrsky on jo pari tuntia sitten loppunut ja nyt täällä Espoon Tapiolassa lämpötila on noussut +1,5 asteeseen. Liikenteessä on koittanut hyvin vetinen loskakeli ja puissa oleva lumi sulaa pisarasateena maahan. Tuuli on heikentynyt ja kääntynyt länteen. Helsingin Sanomien mukaan myrsky aiheutti mm. Lounais-Suomessa muutamille tuhansille talouksille sähkökatkoja. Eli tämä myrsky on ollut samanlainen kuin se viime lauantain myrsky. Nyt tosin lunta on maassa 5 - 10 cm ja se ei sula kokonaan pois ennen sunnuntain - maanantain uutta lyhyttä pakkasjaksoa.

Päivitys klo. 23:15: Etelärannikon lämpötila on kohonnut illan mittaan jopa lähelle +5 astetta (sisämaassakin selvästi suojaa) ja sen myötä täällä Espoon Tapiolassakin lumet ovat alkaneet sulaa nopeasti. Näinköhän nämäkin lumet ehtivät sulaa ennen tuota uutta pakkasjaksoa... No, aavistin näin käyvän, sillä merivesi Suomen ympärillä on erittäin lämmintä ja jäätöntä ajankohtaan nähden. Näistä kartoista voitte verrata tämän hetken jäätilanteen huikeaa eroa normaaliin; meren lämmittävä vaikutus moniin säätilanteisiin on edelleen olemassa. Tässä kaikki tämän kerran säästä.



Today is an interesting weather day regarding both the weather and photographing it. This all started just a moment ago with perhaps the best sunrise colours situation of all time, which I have experienced and have been able to photograph. It foresaw this day's severe blizzard. Here at the district of Tapiola in Espoo the precipitation may turn more into direction of sleet and rain during the afternoon and until the night temperatures will reach above zero C readings, but there might be coming snow even more than 10 centimetres here as well. In any case now in whole southern Finland in practice there has been started the first proper blizzard of the winter.

Winds are today significant as well, because there will be expected a same kind of storm like it was last saturday. So, wind damages are possible today in this crossing of an occluded front. The soil has now freezed for few centimetres deep (last night's temperatures were about -5 C), but so little amount of ice in the very wet ground isn't yet a proper slowing down factor against trees falling down. Update at 2:20 PM: At this moment the snowing is at its heaviest in the district of Tapiola in Espoo. A few centimetres have already fallen and the snow is a bit thawlike in nature, because the temperature is at zero C. Due to that this snow doesn't pile up that badly despite the strong wind. This snowtype grabs rather well onto the tree branches, allthough the wind is hard. Therefore the accumulation of snow onto the trees can worsen the risk of wind damages locally during near hours at the places of zero C temperatures.

Update at 6:45 PM: The blizzard has ended already couple of hours ago and now here at the district of Tapiola in Espoo the temperature has risen to +1,5 C. Conditions have become very wet and slushy in traffic and the snow on the trees is melting as a rain to the ground. The wind has calmed down and turned to the west. According to Helsingin Sanomat paper the storm caused for example power-failures to few thousands of household in southwestern Finland. In other words this storm has been a same kind of storm as that saturday's storm. Now, though, there is snow on the ground 5 - 10 centimetres and it won't melt away completely before the new short frosty period around sunday - monday.

Update at 11:15 PM: The temperature by the southern coast has risen during the evening even near +5 C (in inland areas clearly thaw as well) and due to that the snow has started to melt fast here in the district of Tapiola in Espoo as well. It seems that these snow covers as well will have time to melt before that new frosty period... Well, I suspected it to happen this way, because the sea water around Finland is very warm and iceless considering the time of the year. From these maps you can compare present ice condition's astonishing difference with the normal (normaali); the warming effect of the sea to many weather situations is further existing.
