Muutoksen tuulia 3 - Winds of change 3

During yesterday and today i removed all posts in the "Viikon kasvi" (Plant of the week) series not counted for couple of exceptions. This is a part of the transformation in my blogging as i mentioned in the previous post. These mentioned posts are yet stored in the draft forms and matters and pictures in them will appear at some point in an other environment and also translated in english... This blog will contain mostly posts associated with my arboretum project, so the removing of posts will continue soon further.

As i removed the posts i discovered, that there had been added comments in some old posts long time ago without me knowing; i hadn't been checked them in several months. I thank you for them though and you can comment on any of my blogs in the future as well! I don't check regularly comments associated with old posts, so therefore those who want an answer quickly it's better to refer to the old in question in the newest post. You can also send mail.

Muutoksen tuulia 2 - Winds of change 2

I have now transformed all my blogs into new Google -versions. As made possible by that i will add labels into my posts at some point, but there are a lot of other things to be done before that. I'm thinking about a publishing strategy within this blog world concerning the plant photos i captured last year. I have stopped publishing plant photos in my Flickr pages for now, but i have added continuously pictures there; allready more than 2000 pieces. Propably during the coming growing season i will serial publish these pictures in some degree.

In addition to that i'm thinking about a possibility to divide this blog into my arboretum theme only and publish all other plant presentations and matters associated with them in their own blog and / or Flickr pages (?), what (which) would be like a photo book of plants. Unfortunately you are forced to be patient with me. However the subject matter is naturally slow and sustained and there are tasks to be done in amounts worth of many years :) Many of my pictures are in any case timeless in nature, so in that case what difference there is then in a way with the time of the publishing..? Due to the mentioned i might remove some old posts from this blog in the near future, because i will move them into a new environment and i can transform them (at the same time i will also translate them in english) at the same time.

To the end i mention about the frosts of the last week, that fortunately in many areas in southern Finland the coldest forecasts didn't come true. For example in Helsinki there was only -20 C and a couple of degrees under at the coldest. On the other hand there was locally very cold in inland areas, like in Hämeenlinna where there was from -30 C to even about -35 C depending of the place. Due to this during the coming spring and summer there will be visible in some plants damage differences between southern coast and some inland areas in southern Finland. Fortunately plants of my arboretum weren't in the coldest areas...

Talven viilto kasvihuoneilmiöön - Cut of winter into the greenhouse effect

At the latest today one must protect winter sensitive plants (in Finland), if that have been remained undone during the snowless period. Namely now starts even near record breaking frosty period! Temperatures will drop in southern Finland between coming tuesday - thursday during nights even clearly colder than -30 C and also by the southern coast including Helsinki around -30 C locally (these readings are usually rather rare in southern Finland, but they happen every winter many times in Lapland).

On the root areas of winter sensitive plants one can spread several centimetres of snow, which is almost the only proper way to protect plants at this stage. Unfortunately the frozen melted snow of this moment is rather bad for that purpose. Airy freshly fallen frosty snow would be much better. Due to this i leave plants unprotected in my nursery place, but now the frost tolerance of different species will be tested. Interesting... I will report damages then during spring both in this place and in my arboretum in Sipoo (a town rather near Helsinki).

In addition it must be noted, that many plants in general are now in danger zone in southern Finland, because the record breaking warmth during december and january woke some plants into spring in some degree. There cannot be done any estimates yet of the amount and vastness of coming damages, because this situation is never experienced before in such a way.

So, despite the strenghtening of the greenhouse effect i'm not surprised of these kinds of cold periods. The matter can include the fact, that among lengthening warm periods there can be short periods of the other extreme. Average weather situations will decrease and the extremes will increase; further more warm and less cold, but the warmth will be very warm and the cold very cold... Will this be happening...?

Muutoksen tuulia - Winds of change

On olemassa erilaisia strategioita tämän ongelman edessä.
Yksi tärkeä strategia on kuitenkin sopeutuminen muutokseen.

Viime syksynä perustamani blogitrilogia Maisema - Landscape, Maan Povi - The Bosom Of The Earth ja Taivaankansi - Firmament (käsittäen ne alueet, joilla elämäni pääasiassa tapahtuu, siellä missä asun) on osaltaan tämän sopeutumisstrategian toteuttamista.

That demonstration of the 1st of February remained a very torso in Finland. One reason might have been, that the information was available so late and it didn't spread for example within blogs at all (?). I personally acted according to the information, but according to my observation there was plenty of lights on all the time in neighbour's apartments. Well, it was "only" a symbolic gesture, which would have had only little effect to the consumption of energy in any case. Worse still i guess, if the demonstration remained a torso would tell about a very big indifference of people...

However winds of change and in other words the strengthening of the greenhouse effect propably will progress greatly during the next 100 years. I believe so, because my scepticism towards mankind is large concerning this; restraining that big phenomenon let alone stopping it completely from proceeding requires so large efforts in such a short period of time (10 to 30 years at the most) among all cultures internationally, that mankind doesn't have enough resources to do so. Not mental nor practical, because according to the evidence seen up to here culturally and basicly a very dispersed group of several billions of people with their leaders cannot be sufficiently on the same project together.

An adaptation and a preparation to extreme weather conditions and to their influences are of course matters, which the change in question will force all of us and it'll cause unfortuned experiences, trouble at getting through with them and it requires a strength to accept them. It means for example an adaptation of these into city planning, landscape architecture, habits of outdoor activities (for example possibilities for winter sports will decrease), choosing one's place for living and so on. And we know here, that the required changes of lifestyles will take time and effort in variable ways according to different cultures and people.

So, there would be things to be done in very large amounts. It's like one would have to do during the previous evening and night before the deadline of the morning a task left in the last moment, which amount of work is worth to the working amount of two weeks. Those who want to do things properly in a conscientious way could break down under pressure and those who's attitude towards making things is superficial could let things fall apart so to speak. This kind of matter can aply to whole nations and not only to single groups of people or individuals. A part of the people cannot take part of a project also even under compulsion or just because of that.

So, the mentioned above doesn't leave room for such a sustained work anymore in the way, that it would produce the wanted result (the prevention of the climate change). Of course in a very long run (hundreds of years) even a minor effort at preventing the change from progressing can appear greatly for example after 150 - 300 years and be then important and crucial for some people and nature living at that time. So one musn't give up completely, allthough the result of the made work could only be 20 % of the wanted amount / quality after 50 years.

Of course this change has been "advertized" easily as a bad thing only, which will only lead into horrible things, which must only be prevented all the time. This can of course be reality in some corners of the world. However also here one must remember, that there are possibilities and positive tones in every change. In this case they are just mostly difficult to find yet and in hiding from minds and eyes in a forming stage only. The possibilities are here just the fact, that we should find positive things from the change in the way we are able to anticipate them with our imagination, observe them with our sense for esthetic and beauty values and take them into our life and activities with our depths of souls.

So all energy musn't be wasted into preventing actions or whining only. There are different strategies at the face of this problem. The dilemma might be, that which strategy would be the best and how one can place them in the order according to importance, where one can direct resources and how. However one important strategy is the adaptation to the change. I have noticed in me, that i have taken this strategy further more as a part of me during last years. To my mind the adaptation to the change doesn't mean at all in here giving up or delving into whining. It doesn't also mean only an adding of consciousness and understanding towards this phenomenon's essence, properties and influence, but also ability, vision and will to act for the environment and human cummunities according to the received material as fusing things together in practise concerning both the matters forced by the change and the matters made possible by the change in a new and changing situation.

The adaptation will also mean, that one will choose hers / his own life area, where one can give something from her- /himself into the taking up of the strategy's
possibilities and good things. The change is now a chance to dig up human's ability to maintain and produce beauty, generally the positive substance of life both in interactions between humans and between humans and environment even in every aspects of life. This will create partly of its own better platforms at experiencing and dealing with dreadfull things caused by the phenomenon. The adaptation to the change is therefore a somekind of preventing in itself towards negative manifestations of the phenomenon. On my account that will appear of course among my profession (landscape architecture) and interests; at the 3rd of January i allready wrote in this blog something about the use of plants in landscape architecture and in planning of environment in general.

The blog trilogy i created last autumn Maisema - Landscape, Maan Povi - The Bosom Of The Earth ja Taivaankansi - Firmament (consisting those areas, where i live and where my life mostly happens) is partly carrying out this strategy of adaptation. As documenting for example just the properties and phenomenons of that environment, where matters caused by the strengthening of the greenhouse effect will firstly appear, will these blogs reveal both a practical view to the problem in question (how will the matters forced by the change appear) and mental emotions via this human at living with the phenomenon (how will the matters made possible by the change appear). Hopefully i'll be able to maintain this trilogy yet for many years to come...

Merely during the last year i was able to capture very much for example peculiar weather conditions for those blogs, which are revealing some hints of this precarious future. At the same time these blogs are trying to reveal just that beauty, what is included in the change and even in unnaturally peculiar circumstances. By that way i want to remind, that in one hand we should be able to enjoy of what we yet have. On the other hand the adaptation to the change is in here just the fact, that we must learn to enjoy new kinds of things as well; like for example how the autumnlike and snowless winter (in Finland) can also be a huge esthetic horn of plenty and not just whine about what can be missing or can be a so called fault. Those will adapt the best, who will accept and take part in to his / hers life a new situation and the fact, that there'll always be a change happening in any case.

Kuvia julki Flickr sivuilla - Pictures released in Flickr pages

Now i publish my own Flickr pages! The link can also be found on the right side of this page; Mikan valokuvia - Mika's photos. I have uploaded allready about 950 pictures into these pages, but only less than 200 of them are public at this moment. The public photos are named and as the naming of the photos proceeds i will publish new photos every week. The pictures aren't yet in batches or organized, but as the amount increases that will also happen in time. The pictures are published in chronological order in such a way, that pictures taken last year (2006) will appear only in several weeks time; sometime during spring... In the future i will use these photos for example in my blogging and also professionally. I wish interesting and delicious moments at watching my pictures!

Ennätyslämpimyys innoittajana - Record breaking warmth as an inspirer

Toiveikkaita näkymiä tarjoaa puolestaan joidenkin aikaisemmin arkoina pidettyjen lajien parantuvat elinmahdollisuudet.

So, December became the warmest on record in southern Finland. The Finnish Meteorological Institute confirmed this yesterday and at the same time came evident, that the temperature of +10,8 C recorded at 6th of december in Salo remained the highest ever daily maximum temperature of the month. So it wasn't topped again, as i mentioned earlier; one tv meteorologist (in Finland) became agitated about it too soon...

In any case the warmth of this "winter" have been unique here in Finland and most of Europe. There aren't end to be seen for this mild weather in southern Finland even as i'm writing this according to forecasts. All this have caused increasing debate over strengthening of the greenhouse effect and this warmth is yet clearer proof of the fact, that it's allready happening in a fast rate.

In my profession (landscape architecture) this brings out both threatening and in a good way challenging prospects. As this phenmenon will roll ahead unavoidably my opinion is, that both prospects must be accounted for when planning and designing environment's green areas. One threatening fact is for example increasing of plant diseases among some plants, which are yet thriving well. Hopefull prospects are arising on the other hand from improving living conditions of the plants considered earlier as not hardy (in Finland).

In the plant selections of green areas this means partly in my opinion, that plentyfull use of species in an arboretum styled way must be counted for, when making planting designs for park and other green area projects. Plant selections including both allready hardy plants and plants considered earlier as not hardy must be favoured. Among a same species multiplicity must be counted for as well; one must use many different propagation sources. In this way thriving and versatility of the plant species in green areas are secured in the future perhaps during very radically changing circumstances. Plant producers in nurseries must take allready now in action yet more strongly for their own part.

From a purely landscape architectural and garden art point of view this kind of plentyfull use of plant species makes possible more delicious, innovative and versatile artistic and for example cityscape / townscape related starting points to plan and design plants into green areas. This plant freak will willingly be a part in that kind of development in using plants now and in the future. This blogging of mine is one part of that as well, where i'll bring foward in different ways properties and appearances of the plants yet more better in the future. In the case here there will also be showing of unknown plant species (in Finland) and daring unfamiliar opinions and views. One must be able to squeeze also idealism from a threatening and challenging future.
