Tänäkin vuonna on aika toivottaa hauskaa Vappua kukkatervehdyksen muodossa! Kuva on otettu eilen Hämeenlinnan keskustassa kävelykatu "Reskalla".
Hauskaa Vappua!
It is time to wish merry "Vappu" ("The First of May" - a celebration of workers and students in Finland, at least originally) with a flower greeting also this year! The picture is taken yesterday in the center of Hämeenlinna in the promenade called "Reska". In the picture there's violets (Viola sp.), which are typical seasonal plants of spring (in Finland). The frost sensitive plants cannot be planted yet during May, so therefore violets are good alternatives to them at this time. Last year on this same pool the violets were looking like this.
This year the festivities are happening in a very cold weather as opposed to the rather warm circumstances of last year. A cold air mass have arrived to whole Finland even all the way from the North Pole and despite today's rather clear weather the daytime temperature will be only around +5 C or just little more in the southern parts of the country. The strong northerly wind will calm down until the night and it looks like there will be several degrees of frost even in the southernmost Finland especially in inland areas. We know that the growing season has allready proceeded rather far, but during couple of last days it has been interrupted. The frost of the next night might be the severest affliction to the beginned growth this spring. So there might be frost damages. For example Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) has reached allready a stage of unfolded leaves in the way of the Birches and rather certainly the leaves in question (not the Birch leaves) will be damaged during the next night...
On the other hand i have said before as well, that plants are also surprisingly frost tolerant as the growth has allready started, but this depends on the species, on the locality, on the origin of the plant and so on. Fortunately many trees and shrubs growing frost sensitive leaves are further only in the bud stage. This cold period can last all this week (today is the coldest day), but for example in the forecast maps of Weatheronline pages there are signs of a massive wave of warm weather in the week following this...
I mention to the end, that i will put only after the "Vappu" pictures of my germinated sowings of this spring. The pictures i took last week failed, because the marco photographing properties of my camera are weak and i haven't cared to photograph again yet. A part of the species have been germinated well, but there have been disappointments again as well in a usual way. Now it is time for a couple of days long net darkness. I wish merry "Vappu" to all of those, who know the celebration and will celebrate!
- Silver Birches (Betula pendula) starting to leaf out and bloom (the left tree had allready done so partly) in sunday the 15th of April 2007 in the district of Tapiola in Espoo.Tänään on viikon lämpimin päivä ja lämpötila on eteläisen Suomen sisämaassa taas +20 asteen tienoilla. Siten vieläkin ihmetyttää Turun yliopiston Aerobiologian yksikön toteamus tämän päiväisessä siitepölytiedotteessaan; "Koivun siitepölyä on kaukokulkeutunut maahan Pohjois-Suomen eteläosia myöten. Paikallinen kukinta alkaa maan eteläosissa". Siis senhän me tiedämme, että tämä paikallinen koivun kukinta alkoi jo viime viikon tiistain tienoilla viimeistään Etelä-Suomessa. Mistä mahtaa johtua tämä ilmennyt vääristymä; onko ko. yksikkö laskenut koivun kukinnan alun teoreettisesti lämpösumman mukaan, mutta jättänyt väärin huomioimatta maaliskuussa kertyneen lämpösumman?... Tai seurantapuut on valittu kylmimmistä mahdollisista kasvupaikoista seurantapisteiden maastossa?... Olen pahoillani.
Today is the warmest day of the week and the temperature is around +20 C in inland areas of southern Finland. From the last week through to yesterday it was so much cool due to the air mass and plentyfull cloudyness, that the growing season have been proceeding slower than i expected earlier. Therefore the growing season's lead as compared to an average schedule have decreased only into 1 to 2 weeks. However at this phase the lead is showing as much more green looking end of April as compared to an usual situation in large areas of southern Finland. Therefore it is further odd, what the unit of Aerobiology of the University of Turku mentioned today in its pollen report; "Long-distance transported birch pollen has occurred up till southern N Finland. Local birch flowering is about to start in Souther Finland". Well, we do know, that this local birch flowering allready started around last week's tuesday at the latest in southern Finland. From what reason might this distortion be appeared from; has this unit in question been calculating the birch flowering theoretically from the effective temperature sum, but has left wrongly uncounted for the March accumulation of the effective temperature sum?... Or the observed trees are selected from the coldest possible localitys at the terrains of the observing posts?... I'm sorry. I am just a bit hampered by this kind of clear negligence from the direction of such a big authority, because i myself have been taken interest in a meticulous plant observing since childhood; more than 25 years. From tomorrow onwards the weather will cool down in such a way, that the growing season is threathened to be interrupted again at the turn of the month and the coolness may be lasting even several days at the beginning of May... In any case, this cooling as well isn't especially threathening to the beginned growing of the plants. So the park and garden tasks can be continued despite the coolness and ground frosts. However i myself have been further lazy on my arboretum project. It has been mainly a question of schedules. However since the catastrophically bad circumstances of the last year i have decided to take the project in a rather easy way this year, but as a good inspiration will coincide with good circumstances my activity may be very brisk. It is in this way unpredictable.Update: the 27th of April; that pollen report is further waiting even today for the Birches of southern Finland to start blooming. The symbols of the report are demonstrating abundant amounts of pollen, but supposedly that isn't native origin. There is revealed from their web pages, that the pollen report is made on the basis of a pollen analysis of the air and long-distance transportation models. So the phenological observations of the actual plants are left as an unessential matter and it shows. To my mind the phenological observations are important here as well and if not in anything else then at least for the sake of a credible information. Yesterday and today Birches have been in southern Finland allready commonly in full bloom and the trees only starting to bloom are in minority. Oh, by the way i am myself as well allergic to Birches :)
Kuvat: blogi 1, blogi 2 ja blogi 3.Here are the Flickr sets of February 2007! This month was very cold and a wintry spot among otherwise warm circumstances of recent times. The pictures: the blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3.
Now i tell you, what i have been thinking regarding my plant photographing project. I have done a decision on the matter. Originally my intention was to start publishing my plant photos in my Flickr pages allready during this year according to the proceeding of the growing season, but due to the large size of the project, due to my other hurries and due to slowness / changeful ways of computers (for example the uploading of the photos onto Flickr pages is sometimes slow in a jerky way) i decided to postpone the publishing of the photos to the next year and from there onwards. The clear reason for the delay is the fact, that i want to do the project properly, because its nature and size will be so fundamental and large. In addition i want to continue at least during this year photographing in a rather intensive way. I want to keep the project entact as dividing it into different phases. Now it is yet important to gather material and only later comes the time to introduce it, organize it, analyze it and refine it. That phase can take several years of time.
However, i want to reveal some of the project's nature allready at this point (i have told you allready earlier as well things associating with this). So i have been photographing since the year 2005 every kinds of growing stages of allmost every kinds of plants in southern Finland. There have been cumulating photos allready several thousands and i have gone through several hundreds of species. The obtained material will be performing in many ways in the future; in one hand it will be as an inspiration to me in several ways in my profession both in working life and in my "hobbies". On the other hand i want to spread new kind information as well of the plants from the perspective of a landscape architect and an artistic soul. This new kind of information means presenting the plants in an alternative way as compared to previous and traditional ways. The alternative is based on the shortcoming, which i have been knowing for several years both in garden and other plant books and also in modern flora of the net; the plants have been presented previously mainly just in a rather dry botanical way and focusing allmost entirely only on their basic growing stages (blooming, fruiting, fall colouring and winter stages in their most typical ways).
My new way of photographing plants will show also those growing stages of the plants, which are between the basic growing stages; leafings out in various degrees, bud stages, fall colour phases and so on. I will aim to present also these growing stages artistically altering from a conventional way, which means many kinds of angular fields and compositions. This happens also by underlining less obvious features of the every plant in question. Photographing of variable plant groupings is part of the matter according to obtainable possibilities. The purpose of this artistic way is to underline the esthetic properties of the plants in the most expressive and variable way possible; so my activity is also a bio-esthetic propaganda. However the propaganda in this case isn't based on lies :) I will write at some point later an analysis, where i'll tell you what i mean with this bio-esthetic propaganda.
I will avoid too much arty features in this photographing project though, because i want informative features to remain of the characteristics of the every plant in question. My method is therefore a hybrid of botanical and artistic views. So it's also important, that unfamiliar growing stages as well of the plants will be finely on display, because for example just in spring it is many times hard to identify even familiar plants due to their so called unfinished growing stages. Couple of years ago a certain student of even the same profession where i am as well was wondering hard of the identification of a tree with unfolding leaves, allthough she knew the species otherwise very well; it was plain English Oak (Quercus robur).
This new plant photographing method of mine means also a botanical improvement, because i want to bring out the dependence of plant growing stages on the amount of warmth (the effective temperature sum) on the cases of as many plants and growing stages as possible. This phenology (a field of science, which among others studies rhythms of plant growing during the year's cycle) is yet rather little studied on the cases of ornamental plants as compared to what i have been aiming to do now. At least it hasn't been brought out well enough before. On the cases of perennials and useful plants it has been rather well known and studied allready in days of yore, but there as well there have been taken into account mainly just a typically average blooming and ripening of fruits; the plants have also other delicious growing stages besides only blooming and in addition to useful plants knowing of growing stages of ornamental plants as well are for the benefit in the horticulture of parks and gardens.
Therefore it's time to bring out phenological features of the plants much more precisely and widely than before. That will improve the use of plants in all kinds of green area planning / designing, because there will be revealed a lot of properties hiding in the year's cycle regarding colours, textures and characters to serve all kinds of composition and planning / designing methods. Also introductions and possibilities of uses of so called new plant species (at least to finns) will be finely on display at the same time. In the climate of four seasons this will create a better palette than before to take advantage of circumstances and it is important due to the climate change as well.
I took up all this, because allready several years ago as read several native and foreign garden and plant books i observed, that i wasn't able to find enough information anywhere about the esthetic properties of the plants, which are many times presented in such a slack way at least regarding phenological properties (timing of blooming amongst others) and along the way i have observed also clear faults in that information in some publications. Therefore i decided to find out and do the matter better foward myself at first mainly for my own purposes, but in these times of the net i soon noticed one excellent way of spreading the information to others as well; blogs and photo services. At some point in the future i wish, that the information i have gathered will be showing in other ways as well; for example in a concrete way in environment in some public park designed by me. At this phase i don't have yet any design projects in addition to my own arboretum project.
So unfortunately i have to disappoint yet this year the people liking plants, since i don't publish these plant photos. However the patience will be rewarded at some point and there might be single plant photos occasionally for example in this blog associating with the matters in question, as recently regarding the blooming of European Aspen (Populus tremula).
Kylvöksistäni voin kertoa, että moni laji on jo alkanut itää hyvin sisäkasvatuksessaan; ensi viikolla laitan tänne kuvallisen raportin itämisestä. Ensin palaan huomenna kertomaan kasvivalokuvausprojektiini liittyvistä asioista.
Paikoin on kuitenkin satanut räntää Länsi-Suomessa.
+20 astetta... Niinpä kaikki luonto pääsee tämän sateisen jakson jälkeen jatkamaan kasvuaan erinomaisesti ja edelleen 2 - 3 viikkoa etuajassa tavanomaisesta aikataulusta. Huolimatta edelleen jatkuvasta hallan vaarasta alavilla mailla tiedossa on siis hyviä hetkiä puutarha- ja puistotöihin, joita kannattaa hyödyntää.
During this week my arboretum project hasn't been proceeding according to plans, because i have been thinking about the fate of my plant photographing project considering the publishing of the photos. So i haven't been finishing the fertilizing task in the arboretum area and i haven't been working in my nursery. Therefore there's nothing to report about them now. I can tell you about my sowings, that many species have allready been started to germinate well in their indoors cultivation; during the next week i'll put here a report with pictures about the germination. Firstly i'll return here tomorrow to tell about the matters associating with my plant photographing project.
I mention yet about the weather at this time, that the forecasted late wintry weather didn't come to the areas in southern Finland appearing in my blogs. I write this in Hämeenlinna and here as well the precipitation comes only in the form of rain in practise; may be it's also a sign of the climate change, that forecasted cold weather periods will become true warmer than they were forecasted... There have been coming sleet locally in western Finland though. The rather profuse rain have done good for the started growth during the last two days and now also the fertilizer grains have been started to dissolve well in my arboretum area. The weather have been cool in such a way yesterday and today, that the growing season have been interrupted temporarily, as the daily mean temperature have been staying a bit below +5 C during at least today. However the clouds and the wind have been keeping nightfrosts away.
The weather will warm up again starting tomorrow and during the next week there might be again even summery temperatures; about +20 C... Therefore after this rainy period all nature will have a chance to continue growing in an excellent way and further 2 to 3 weeks ahead of an average schedule. So despite a continuing risk of ground frost on low terrains there'll be fine moments for garden and park works, which are worth to take advantage of (in Finland).
Edellinen ennätyskevät on vuodelta 1921. Etsin tovin tietoa Google:sta tuon kevään lehtien puhkeamisesta, mutta tätä linkkiä parempaa en löytynyt tähän tarkoitukseen. Joka tapauksessa mieleeni on jäänyt jostain artikkelista päivämäärä; 21.4., jolloin tuona keväänä 1921 koivut olivat puhjenneet hiirenkorvalle Helsingissä. Nyt siis sitäkin aikaisemmin! Tuon linkin tarjoamista tiedoista käy ilmi mm. rauduskoivun (Betula pendula) lehteentulo vuodesta 1846 lähtien (taulukko oikeassa yläkulmassa) keskimäärin Napapiirin eteläpuoleisilla alueilla. Taulukosta nähdään hyvin mm. tuon vuoden 1921 kevään varhainen kasvu ja se, kuinka ilmastonmuutos näkyy kasvun keskimääräisenä varhentumisena viime vuosikymmeninä. Kasvit todellakin ovat erittäin hyviä ilmaston lämpenemisen mittareita, koska niiden kasvu on suoraan ja orjallisesti riippuvainen lämmön määrästä. Kasveilla on siis lämmöstä riippuvainen rytmi ja fenologiaksi kutsuttu tieteen ala tutkii tätä kasvien vuodenaikojen rytmiikkaa. Tässä linkissä on esim. rauduskoivun fenologisia kasvutilanteita eri vuosina Metlan tarjoamana. Olen aikaisemmin tosin kritisoinut ko. tietoja liian suurpiirteisiksi. Ilmastonmuutos on jo karannut ihmiskunnan käsistä?! Tässä linkissä on uudestaan viime talvena kirjoittamani visio aiheeseen sopivasti liittyen. As i mentioned last week, the wave of warm weather during last weekend and monday made Birch trees open their buds into leaf in many places in southern Finland until yesterday. At the same time the blooming of Birches started as well unlike the Aerobilogical Unit of the University of Turku announced today in its pollen report; "Birch pollen is (only) long-distance transported into southern parts of the country". For example around the capital city area (Helsinki) i observed yesterday allready several Birches both opened their buds and in bloom. At the same time also flower recemes peeped out from the buds of Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) on many trees. It should be noted again also, that the growing season have been ongoing since the end of March not counted for the small interruption and therefore the term halla "ground frost" have been in use for the corresponding time. These growing stages are new records of the known history in their early times. The previous record breaking spring happened in the year of 1921. For awhile i looked for an information from Google about that spring's unfolding leaves, but i didn't find any better link than this for this purpose (unfortunately only in finnish). In any case from some article there have been remained a date in my mind; the 21nd of April, when in that spring of 1921 Birches had been opened their buds into leaf in Helsinki. So now even earlier than that! From the information provided by that link there are revealed for example the approximately times of opened buds of Silver Birch (Betula pendula) since the year 1846 (a graf on the upper right corner) in the areas south from the Polar Zone in Finland. From that graf it is easily observed for example that early growth of the spring 1921 and the fact, how the warming climate is showing as times of started growth getting approximately earlier during last decades. The plants really are very good indicators of the warming climate, because their growth is directly and slavishly depending on the amount of warmth. So the plants have a rhythm depending on the amount of warmth and a field of science called phenology is observing / examining these rhythms of the seasons. In this link there are for example phenological growing situations of Silver Birch in different years as provided by Metla. I have previously critizised the information in question as too slack though. In addition those picture series are started only at the 29th of April, which is really way too late this spring, as it was last time in 2002; again one example of the fact, that the climate change requires ability to be flexible in here as well. I will tell you a lot more about this phenology of plants in the future, because it belongs as an essential feature in my hobby based research; for example my plant photographing project is based partly on that. These growing records as well are telling really finely about the climate change and suitably there was yesterday on finnish TV a debate about the climate change and how one should react to the prevention of it. The debate was furious and many opinions were cast about the measures; for example shifting to use bio based fuel, favouring nuclear power and reducing the use of cars. However there was left an image of the debate, that the focus was only on the near future and on insufficient measures considering a long reaching future. Therefore there is further in my mind the fact, that there should be drawn attention also to the facing of the inevitable and to the adaptation. The climate change has allready gotten away from the hands of humankind?! In this link there is again the vision i wrote last winter suitably associating with the matter.
Taas on vuorossa blogitrilogian kuvien julkaisu Flickr -sivuillani. Kyseessä oleva tammikuu 2007 oli erittäin mielenkiintoinen ja vaihteleva, koska kuun alun ennätyslämmin sää muuttui hyvin kylmäksi ja lyhyt varsinainen talvi alkoi. Tämän takia otin kuvia poikkeuksellisen paljon etenkin blogiin Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth. It's time again for the blog trilogy pictures to be published on my Flickr pages. January 2007 in question was very interesting and variable, because the record warm weather at the beginning of the month turned into a very cold weather after the mid month and the short actual winter started. Due to this i took unusually large amount of photos especially for the blog Maan povi - The Bosom Of The Earth. It remains to be seen, if i'll really put that amount (151) also into the blog as well, or will i leave something away... In any case here are the pictures (remember that the photos of the month in question are on several Set -pages in the case of a large amount): the blog 1, the blog 2 and the blog 3.
